I love western MA! We have amazing people, music, art and nature. But I have to admit, it's not easy for me to find restaurants that I really like. Bombay Royale is a place that i look forward to visiting. The interior is clean and bright. I always feel relaxed and happy when I arrive. As a vegan who is also gluten free, my options in restaurants are often limited. Even though I manage to find things to eat in most places, it often feels like an afterthought. Bombay Royale is a rare exception. There's a whole section of their menu for vegan dishes. Everything is clearly labeled and the staff is always happy to answer any questions. It's a great feeling to know that the people making and serving my food understand and put care into making delicious things that are made vegan, rather than just leaving out an ingredient or two from a standard dish. They have the best Dosa's in New England, served with incredible chutneys and sambar. There's a fun lunch buffet that always has plenty of vegan options. They label everything clearly, even noting if there are nuts, GF, etc. I live about an hour away but it's still my go-to spot for special occasions or meeting a friend for lunch if I'm in the noho/amherst area. The vegetarian dishes here are always great. Service is consistently good and the dishes are all very affordable for being of such great quality. I've been here a few times now, and I find that they're very good about specifics such as "no cilantro." And they compensate well too. If I ask for no mint sauce on the side, they give me a different condiment instead. I recently got takeout from them and found they'd forgotten the rice, and when I went back to ask for some, they gave me two servings of rice. I appreciate that! read more

Ordered 1. Lamb Kebab - Very dry, and mediocre. 2. Goat Vidaloo - Comes with loads of sauce and is tasty. Tastes very much like lamb.. 3. Vegetable Biryani - Save your $15! It is the exact same white tasteless and plain rice you get for free with your vidaloo. Some tasteless vegetables were buried under the rice and then topped with some colorful sauce to mimic biryani. (Very cheap shortcut). I think if you're gonna sell biryani on the menu then serve biryani, don't cheat and mimic to make your work easier. I nicely brought it to server/manager's? attention whether it is the biryani dish.. He replies by saying "umm well it's rice with vegetable, in Hindi Biryabi means rice with vegetables.. Humm interesting.. I was in town for a concert and looking for a spot for dinner before the show. This restaurant came on my radar. We walked in around 6:30 pm for a table of six without reservation and got super lucky, we were seated right away, and took the last available table in the restaurant before the dinner rush came in. the place does have a bar right where i saw some couples eating. Food ordered: an app sampler, my goat curry, a veggie curry, biryani, regular naan, garlic naan, and a few more that i'm forgetting. app sampler: pretty standard in terms of most indian fried foods. biryani: delicious and above par. naan: my personal preference is the garlic over the regular naan, both were done well. warm throughout, not overly oily, and had a nice consistency. goat curry: this was my dish. the flavor was there, all that was missing was the tenderizing of the goat meat, had the goat been cooked much much longer i would have given my overall review a star more. the meat was on bones and i had to gnaw at it like a meat popsicle. if i'm ever in town and craving for indian food, i would definitely stop back in. read more

Omg best Indian food I've had on a trip like ever!! We ordered the lunch box special, one vegan for me and one chicken for my mom. She was a bit wary of not knowing what dishes came in the box, but at $8 for rice, 2 dishes, and bread it was worth the risk. And the risk payed off! I got a delicious mushroom masala (with the perfect amount of heat) and a spiced Indian cabbage dish for the two vegan dishes, and she got what we think was chicken tikka masala and saag paneer. Both boxes also had fluffy basmati rice and a bunch of naan bread wrapped in foil. It was so much food!! When I picked the bag up I almost dropped it because I didn't expect it to be so heavy haha. We were stuffed and couldn't even finish all of it (as much as we wanted to) but it was so good. Insanely good overall! Great value and you really get a ton of bang for your buck. Also I love the many vegan options, which Indian food is always reliable for. I really can't wait to go back and try other dishes and combinations :) read more

What was even surprising was how they pulled off not just southern India ln dishes like Sambar and Briyani, but also the chicken tikka masala of north. What can I say? This restaurant is an institution. There is no Indian food like it in the United States. Truly authentic and delicious, extremely reasonable prices, perfect ambiance, and wonderfully hospitable. The staff are very kind, personal, and professional. Whether it be Kerala fish curry, puri bhaji from Mumbai, or tandoori chicken, the food covers a vast array of Indian dishes from many regions of the country, with the dinner and lunch buffet alike being plentifully tasty and fulfilling. The atmosphere of the restaurant itself is full of community, with many people, from college students to retirees, coming together to enjoy a feast under its roof. As someone who has a deep appreciation of Indian cuisine, I can honestly say that this is some of the best Indian food you will ever find. Sweet and sour cauliflowers were rich in flavors Goat 5/5: perfectly cooked, juicy and off the bones. Rasmalai 5/5: we were amazed by this unique dessert. My friend keeps talking about it since we left Chicken tikka masala 4/5: sauce was perfect. Chicken could be more tender Complimentary naan was great. Dosa was okay. Not recommended: saag, lamb mushroom, kheer. I like kheer but sadly their kheer is watery, over sweetened and too soft. Our server, Sid, was very attentive. We ordered chicken Ammwala, amazing, ordered another to go. No question it had sugar in it, but so many other flavors. And the mango pieces, so fruity, they call it "exotic mango cream sauce", it is. Also Palak (spinach) paneer. Excellent. Bhamia Koota, spiced lamb with tamarind, okra, great sauce. Goat curry, relatively tender, on the bone. Wonderful affordable experience. This is a review of the afternoon buffet. The spread was decent. The service was good as well. They even had a lamb dish in the spread which is quite a rare find these days. The only issue I had was the palak dish. Either an important ingredient was forgotten or something went wrong because it was completely bland and nowhere near what it had to be. If I want to make a reservation for up to 15 people this would be a good option. I had the chicken tikka masala and my date had the lamb. For $11they had a really impressive spread which had salad, pakoda,upma,shredded cabbage, spinach chole subzhi,aloo curry, gobhi mutter curry, avial, chicken tikka, tandoori chicken, chicken masala dry, lamb curry, rice and gulab jamun& rice pudding for dessert. They served hot tandoori rotis at your table. Was surprised to see so many items for a weekday buffet. And the food was really tasty too. Had never seen avial (a thick mixture of vegetables and coconut, seasoned with coconut oil and curry leaves) served at a Indian restuarant in MA and was really happy to see it in the buffet. Honestly, I really wanted to like this place. In fact, I tried very hard to do so. Note: I've never been to India, but some of the best and most authentic Indian food that I've had has been in London and 1 other place in the Northeast US. While my order was on time, nearly everything else about my meal was dissatisfying. Though I requested napkins and utensils, they were not included in my order. The rice was rather bland. The naan was nothing to write home about (although in their defense, I ate it about 10 minutes after picking it up...so take that with a grain of salt). The meat and seafood were "okay" at best (sure, it was a bit tender, but not adequate enough for this vindaloo dish). The vindaloo itself (and I got 3 different kinds in my order) was not very good: it was SWEET??? Also the complexity and layering of the flavors was just not as developed as I'm used to in Indian dishes. The ONE thing that I would absolutely give them a gold star for (hence a 2 star review, rather than 1), is their heat! Oh my goodness! I am used to Goan food, so I prefer it EXTREMELY spicy, which is how I requested my meal. They delivered!!! I was pleasantly surprised, impressed, and pleased that they were able to meet my heat standards (I think most places are afraid the customer can't handle it even if they request it...but I basically begged on my order note). The heat was EXCELLENT! Keep in mind that most people can't handle that level of heat, so DO NOT request that if you don't regularly eat ghost peppers and California reapers for fun! Really, the 2 stars are solely coming from the wonderful spiciness (just heat, not the layers of spices, as that was lacking) and the fact that the food was mostly edible.... although I only ate enough to quiet my hunger long enough to go home and eat something else. I would have saved the spicy vindaloo sauce if it wasn't also sweet. Never in my life have I had sweet vindaloo. I did not at all enjoy the sweetness. read more
