I love Indian food - especially northern Indian. Bombay Sweets is now at the top of my list because the food is AMAZING and they have a great variety of Indian foods. The atmosphere and staff were also great! For the food - everything we tried was excellent: kachori, bhel poori, mixed veg utappam, thali platter with vegetable korma and paneer burji. Most were recommended by the person who took our order (we asked her opinion on things repeatedly and she was so kind and thoughtful!). Our favorite was the kachori. The lentil filling was delicious and the fried pastry shell was TO DIE FOR. The tamarind chutney was the best tamarind chutney I've ever had. The utappam was also great! It came with a coconut chutney that became my favorite chutney ever! And my partner loved the sambhar. If we had to do it over again, we would have ordered the onion utappam because the cooked bell peppers in the mixed veg uttapam weren't our fave - but it didn't take away from the deliciousness of the crispy, flavorful utappam. I really liked the bhel poori too! When I looked at it, I thought it would be dry and lack flavor ... but I was definitely wrong about that! It was sweet and savory not at all dry. We did add the raita sauce from the thali platter on the top of the bhel poori for a little extra sauce / flavor and were pleased with the addition. The thali platter was great because we got to pick whichever two curries we wanted. As we had for most of our food choices, we asked the lovely lady who worked there about her recommendations. She was spot on with her recommendations of vegetable korma and paneer burji. Both were excellent. I also got the chai tea - it was warm and yummy. My partner got the Indian lemonade. He liked it a lot, but it wasn't my fave. It was worth trying though. And finally, the desserts. The thali platter came with a gulab jamun - and it was the best one my partner and I ever had! Then after finishing our meal, we went to check out the other desserts. We had no idea what to get so the same lady who helped us figure out what to order for dinner also helped us with the desserts. She even let us sample a lot of them! We got a lot of different things and all had great flavor and just the right amount of sweetness. I expected the bill to be quite high because we ordered so much. But it was just over $50 which seemed very reasonable to me. I'd recommend this place to anyone! Bombay Sweets used to be my jam; I ate there quite often and it was fantastic without exception. I loved the food, the owners, and the deli-type atmosphere. It's one of the places I missed most while living out of state. I returned to find the restaurant had expanded, different atmosphere, and the food quality greatly diminished. A cute Indian restaurant on the south side of Milwaukee. We ordered a large amount of takeout with coworkers and when I went to pick it up the employee was very kind and updated me on where they were at with the order. Nothing was missing from our order, which is impressive with an order that size. They only serve vegetarian food, but even as a meat eater I was definitely not disappointed by the vegetarian option. NOT GOOD FOR DINE-IN! You will starve to death before getting served at a table here. This is a shop to buy Desi sweets (Indian desserts) for takeout, but it is impossible to get service if you sit in the dining area. I've been here several times over the past few years. Only successfully received food as a dine-in customer once (it took almost an hour, food was only so-so). They are still pretty slow for takeaway, but most of the people who mistake this for a sit-down restaurant leave after 30+ minutes of waiting for a menu. I've only seen two people eating actual hot food here (besides myself, that one time I had hours to kill), and they were probably family of the workers. You may be able to get takeout, but plan on a long wait. Getting assistance with the sweets case takes at least 10-20 minutes, so make sure that you're not too hungry, not in ANY rush, and very patient. The sweets are standard the only good ones in town, but less expensive than driving to Chicago for exceptional desserts. read more

Go there and eat the fabulous food. Mention the substandard, inaccessible women's restroom. The food is very good and priced sensibly. As good as it has always been. However, it has not got an accessible restroom. I refer to the women's restrooms. There is no way to get a wheelchair near the door. Even if you could move built-in furniture, you could not get into the restroom. There are grab bars for those who can get into the room. But the toilet rocks! It is clearly not the quality that the dining room is. Almost forgot the hot water. Be careful! The hot water flows with steam! There is a cold tap and a hot one. Use the cold one first. I tried their platter, almond milk dessert, and Mango Lassi and they were delish! I would recommend this to everyone. You don't have to be a vegetarian to love their food. They have a massive selection of food, drinks, and dessert, and have been around for almost two decades. Best of all they are affordable and cheaper than all the Indian restaurants I have been to. I will only make a comment about their platewear, utensils, straws, and cups, they all came in disposables which are not environmentally sustainable. Styrofoams and no. Recyclable plastics are. I absolutely LOVE Bombay Sweets. Hands down, this is one of my favorite go-to spots in the area and I've been coming here for years. I'd like to think of this place as a real "no frills, all flavor" sort of place. It's chill, hella down-to-earth, and totally lunch or diner-esque. It's great. The food here is wonderful. When we first walked in I wasn't really sure what to do. Maybe I was just having a slow day, but eventually we realized we should order first and then sit where ever we wanted. When the food is ready the woman at the counter calls you up to get it. Like the other reviewers mentioned, the food is served on all styrofoam stuff and you get napkins, plastic cutlery, and water from a side area. Despite the lackluster styrofoam presentation, the food is phenomenal and spicy! I got the cheese parotha (parotha stuffed with spiced minced cheese) and dahi vada (deep fried lentil patties in yogurt topped with sweet and hot sauce). I'm not the toughest when it comes to spice and if you're like me, I recommend getting lassi to drink (mango is delicious) because it tames the heat from taking over. Infuriatingly, every single item we bought 4/17/2024 (both the sweets and the salty snacks) tasted OVERWHELMINGLY of SOAP (likely dishwashing detergent). This was a hidden gem. Right when I walked in this place, I was impressed with their selection of sweets. We tasted a few and loved them all. It had the true home made Punjabi sweet taste. Bombay Sweets features not just sweets, but an extensive array of meals at a reasonable price (less than $10). I would've taken more photos of my food, but it was so good that my camera was not going to eat first. I ordered for pickup: a samosa and a masala dosa. From the outside, I liked that it has its own parking lot. Inside was unassuming; decor isn't anything special but rows of jalebi among other desserts filled the glass cases, and I felt like a kid in a candy shop. Upon arrival around lunchtime, it was relatively empty. Service was fine, and I wasn't expecting anything hypercordial. I thought my samosa was going to be miniature, but when I unraveled the foil, it was a full fledged samosa accompanied by a tamarind sauce and mint chutney mixed together. Both were spicy and contributed to how quickly I heartily inhaled the samosa. The dosa came with creamy coconut chutney that had more of a sour cream-like taste, and a lentil soup, known as sambhar. The soup was a nice complement to the meal. The dosa was piping hot, and I wish I had ordered it in so I could've enjoyed the crunchy dough. Nonetheless, it was filling and comforting; the curried potatoes inside mixed with sauce was this multidimensional, savory flavor that I can't get over. The moral of the story is: don't expect any frills when it comes to service or ambiance, but do expect a hearty, flavorful, and home cooked meal that won't break the bank. read more

I guess I'm a sucker for the hidden gem. $14 bought two huge entrees with sides, two mango lassis and a satisfied pair of diners. The food was full of rich flavors and a bit of spice without being heavy or greasy, and Bombay Sweets has to be one of the best bangs for your buck in Milwaukee. I don't even feel bad about the gas I used driving all the way from the north side of the city. Highlights were the mango lassis, naan/paratha, anything with chickpeas and samosas. Not a big fan of the yogurt as a [huge] side, but that's honestly just personal preference. I haven't yet tried any of the countless confections that line the deli fridges. This place is no-frills (lunch trays!), but the sweet ladies working the counter and the Indian knicknacks fill it up with character. The place: almost reads like a bakery, and there are a lot of baked goods (gulab jamin and the like) in a front display case when you walk in. The entirely vegetarian menu is on the wall. It's a little overwhelming, but everything looks good. You order at the counter, grab a seat in a booth and wait for them to give you a nod or a wave to tell you that your food is ready. The taste: I really splurged with the $5.50 platter (#31) - we shared the mix pakora appetizer (fried veggies.. Yum) and I got some potato stuffed bread (parotha) and some chick pea mixture and some yogurt (raita). Everything tasted great. Authentic. Flavorful. Vegetarian. This place is a best kept secret for inexpensive authentic Indian food on the south side. This is where the local Indian immigrants go, not where the tourists go. It's very clean, well lit, comfortable, and the delicious smell hits you like a wall when you walk in. It's not fancy, styrofoam plates and plastic forks are used, but that's not why you come here. The all vegetarian menu is extensive, and has English descriptions for those of us not familiar with Indian food terminology. The food is made the way it would be made in an Indian home kitchen. This is definitely the type of place that A. I would never have ever stumbled upon on my own without a recommendation from a friend and B. would have taken one look at and walked out. I didn't have room after my yummy meal for any but I will be back to try these interesting sounding treats. (They can box them up and sell them to-go). The big menu is hanging on the wall by the front counter where you order and it is hard to decide. There are so many options and they are SO CHEAP. This place was recommended to me by someone who owned another Indian restaurant! Everything I ate there was delicious, with the quality of home cooking that exceeds any idea of value, because you can't put a price on love. But on top of that, it's the least expensive restaurant in town! Bombay Sweets has the best value to quality ratio of anyplace within a 7000 mile radius. The lighting used to be a little strange, but they recently remodeled, and it now it looks like a beautiful magical wonderland. There's no TV and there IS a community bulletin board. If they ever decided to install a dishwasher and used non-disposable plates, glasses, and silverware, this place would be the Eighth Wonder of the World. The woman who runs the counter is the nicest person anywhere, but not in a fake way, more like family. This is a place you could sit for hours with friends and talk, if you were so inclined.
