Tried it for the first time with high hopes, but unfortunately it fell short of what I was expecting due to positive reviews from friends. I got the grilled pork banh mi with a cup of broth (~1/2 quart, $5) with a Vietnamese iced coffee. Sandwich was good, but it wasn't very big for $10. The meat, which was good I was expecting to be pieces of grilled meat, was very sparse and very thin, like bulgogi. The broth was pretty sweet instead of savory and likely already pre-seasoned with hoisin. In terms of service, I had placed my order first. Sandwich with the coffee. My partner said he'll have the same thing. I confirmed to make sure that was also including the ice coffee, and the person that took our order said yes. We waited for a while for our order (highly recommend ordering online, we just saw different prices on their website vs online ordering service, so we thought we'd just wait to order in person), then she forgot our iced coffees. We waited some more. She only brought out one. She said oh sorry, I only rang you up for one. So we waited some more. At that point I thought she would just let us have the coffee on the house, but she did indeed ring us up. We were probably in and out with our to-go order in about 40 minutes. All in all, I'd go back for the iced coffees if I was in the area because they were good, but I wouldn't go out of my way to go back. read more

Delicious, Casual, Affordable! I really enjoyed my meal with my boyfriend at Xankia. Went here for dinner after receiving a recommendation from a friend, who cited that this was her lunch spot of choice! If I worked in the city I would totally be here all the time. We were one of two parties having dinner and everything we got was great and served quick and the server was kind! We got 6 veggie egg rolls, the specialty pho, and a tofu bahn mi. A decent Vietnamese restaurant in downtown Milwaukee. I've been to much better places and so if this is the only option then go and get a decent meal. It's a much better meal than McDonalds but if you can get to a place with a much larger Vietnamese population you will see the difference in quality. This is the ONLY pho spot I have found in MKE so far that consistently has great pho. This was my second time here and the broth is so flavorful. They have to know it's amazing because they literally sell just the broth as a $5 add on to their meal. I had the pork vermicelli noodles and my fiancée had the beef and meatball pho. I was trying something different and while it was delicious, I kept wanting her pho but she made it so spicy I couldn't eat it. The vermicelli is great and both were more than enough portions. For the shrimp spring rolls, we loved the size and the dipping sauce. However, I almost wish the sauce was built into the rolls because it is really hard to dip them one they are open coz the noodles fall out. Did I mention their coffee (Vietnamese) is amazing? As I'm half Vietnamese, I always geek out when I see there's a Vietnamese restaurant. We were in Milwaukee for the weekend and decided to grab food here the first night we stayed. We ordered 2 banh mi, one house special and the other the grilled pork. We also ordered 2 Thai iced tea and an order of spring rolls. When we ordered, we ordered online, and for some reason it was pushed to the next day. But we called and the staff quickly rectified it and we were able to pick up our food the same night. As far as the foods, I think my favorite was the Thai iced tea and the spring rolls. Unfortunately, my husband and I found the banh mis to be a bit hard, and rather sour in flavor which is not what we're used to. Overall the staff was great, it was not for me, but when in the area I may come by and try their pho in person. Also note that on the weekend, they do ID at night. When you order online be cautious about the time, it usually takes a little longer than stated but it's always fresh and hot then. Inside is a nice place to sit and enjoy your meal. This restaurant is small but cute and clean! Came in on a Thursday night around 5pm, no wait and only customers. The banh mi was not anything special, too much bread and not enough fillings. The pho was decent, broth was pretty flavorful and good base, on the sweeter side. They definitely skimped out on the noodles and side veggies/toppings (was given approximately 3 individual leaves of basil). I do want to try their appetizers so I will be back but there is definitely better pho in the MKE area, but this does satisfy the initial craving. The pho itself was one of the better ones I've had around the area. However, they really lacked on all the veggies. Not sure if it was because it was a takeout order or if they usually don't give that much anyway, but definitely was a bit shocked when building my bowl of pho. I also couldn't help noticing all the spelling errors for "banh mi" spelled "bahn". I get typos on menus and when you mass print those it gets spendy to just fix a small error, but these were what seemed like handwritten signs throughout the restaurant. I wasn't a fan of the bun, but mostly due to personal preference, my boyfriend really enjoyed it. The beef pho was the real star of the show! I live in California and travel for work. I have an awesome pho place by my house and many others that are solid so i was disappointed when i came here. First, the location is by the Convention center but its in a real run down area. Second, the food lacked pretty bad. I ordered the BBQ Pork Spring rolls that had the smallest amount of pork. Not very flavorful unless you scooped a big portion of peanut sauce. The Pho was ok! You can only order one size and not many choices. The pho broth flavoring was very faint. Also ordered the Pork Bahn Mi which was ok at best. I was asked if i wanted jalapenos but mine didnt come with any even though i said yes. When you first come in there is a sign that says take a menu and have a seat. After about 10 mins i was told by an employee that was eating that when i was ready to go to the front register to order. Lunch time, I'm famished in my hotel room. So I ran the Yelp app to find me some place to chow down. After screening though some restaurants, this spot seem to speak to me the loudest. Plus it's only 3 blocks away from the hotel. I ordered the house special with combo #2. That'd be the Banh Mi and the Fresh Rolls. Fountain drink is extra with the combo 2. Fresh Rolls: Three fillings to choose from. Pork, Shrimp or Tofu. I did the shrimp. Came in a fancy looking bowl which made it super pretty looking. Taste was super on point. Only thing is that it needed a bit more cilantro. Banh Mi: OMG, this sandwich was totally winning. Perfect balance and taste combination with the meats and pickled veggies. Still needed a bit more cilantro imo. The baguette was light and crispy ok the outside and soft/chewy on the inside. This sandwich is super delightful. The place was sorta divey,, just you basic chairs and tables. Nothing ultra modern. But I dont care about all that. The employees were super nice and their food is pretty darn good. I have been calling this place for months now trying to get someone to pick up the phone to ask if they are open so I don't drive over for nothing and I keep getting the same recorded message saying that they are open Monday through Saturday 11 am to 7 pm and we can order through grub hub and another site. So a couple things. 1. The prices went up and there are no longer meal options. Everything is now a La carte 2. The quality of the food has gone down. I got spring rolls and a bahn mi sandwich. The spring rolls had a uncooked chunk of noodles in it and the bahn mi sandwich was dry. 3. The service has also declined. I was told 10-15 minutes. I left and came back and three other people got their orders before me. They said that the noodles were still cooking and it would only be a few more minutes. I got my order after a 25 minute wait. Overall, I miss the old Xankia before the renovation. It seemed like they cared more about the food and the customers. read more

I had been craving a banh mi since moving to the area and bookmarked this place well in advance. Today, I finally got to visit and wasn't disappointed! The house special and grilled pork banh mi were both excellent, though the baguette could have been crispier. Sandwiches were a bit pricier than what I am used to, but I was happy to pay. I was craving banh mi and this place hits the spot! I came here for a late lunch with a friend on Saturday. Street parking available. I ordered the the House Special Sandwich meal which came with spring rolls and a drink. My friend ordered the Xankia Special Pho. Tip: check in on Yelp to get a free soft drink! Orders came out as they were ready. Spring rolls were a standard good (recommend getting the pork over the shrimp), but the accompanying sauce was delicious and I used it to dip my banh mi in. The banh mi had a great crunch and fresh vegetables. The pho was fire. For those that like a spicy kick, there are trays of sauce spreads that you can pick up and bring to your table. I've been sick and in need of a pho fix. Pho is always one of my go-tos when I'm feeling lousy or run-down. I've been in Milwaukee for a little while but had been yet to nail down my pho spot. Winter is coming, and I think Xankia is it for the moment. The hours are a little strange and I don't always have another excuse to be in this part of town. But they do serve a good bowl of pho. I had been here once before to try a banh mi. Those might be more what sets Xankia apart from other similar places. It's not that you can't find them elsewhere, but not every Vietnamese restaurant has them. I had the one with fried tofu. It was good. I liked the way the flavors melded, especially those bright pickled vegetables. I remember I had spring rolls the time I came before. Today I saw that they're available with the banh mi as part of a combo. I got the pho, but I splurged and got the spring rolls anyway. They were good too but they only had shrimp, lettuce, and rice noodles inside. There's nothing wrong with that, but I like when they have some jalapeño and maybe cucumber too. Admittedly I'm comparing Xankia to my old pho spot, Mike's Cafe in Little Rock, AR, which I guess still holds a place in my heart. Of course I promptly spilled a little bit of the peanut sauce that comes with the spring rolls, mixed with Sriracha, on my sweater. And I had trouble keeping my hair out of my soup. All totally my fault--the hair will be fine, but I hope the stain comes out of the sweater. But this was about the pho. The broth was flavorful but still benefited from some lime and basil and chili sauce. Spice is part of the appeal when I have a cold. And my sinuses do feel a little clearer since I finished eating. I tend to order the "special" or "dac biet" when I get pho because I like to get the tendon and tripe in there along with everything else. I'm not squeamish about offal but my rule is that it has to be spicy. I don't know how I would feel about just eating a plate of tripe or whatever by itself, but in a soup with a lot of other things it's good. I wouldn't necessarily call this the best bowl of pho I ever had, but it hit all the right notes. It was steaming hot, it had the spices like star anise obviously present, the meat components were well-cooked. I've had the meatballs in pho be kind of gritty before, but these weren't. And most of all it made me feel better. Really. I don't know whether it's the actual food or more psychological, but I do feel kind of an increased sense of well-being.
