Oh my god. I am so happy. Fried zucchini is my childhood indulgence and when Ruby's removed it from their menu I almost cried. Bonchon has the best fried zucchini (or zucchini fries, as they call it) anywhere. So glad to discover a new place serving this favorite treat! The fried chicken is also excellent. Bonchon is not bad, but it misses the mark when compared Bonchon's gold standard... It's New York location at Boka on St. Marks. I have had opportunity to try Bonchon at three of its locations, each a different iteration of its growth in America. A major positive is that this Bonchon location is a massive improvement over the K-Town LA bomb that closed shortly after its opening a few years ago. The LA location served chicken that wasn't crisp enough, didn't have enough sauce and was matched with lackluster customer service. There was just no way it could compete with Kyochon at that time. Fast forward to now... Bonchon in Costa Mesa is all grown up. It has a full menu and it's not just fried chicken. They have sliders, takoyaki, ddeokbokki, fried calamari, potstickers, Korean tacos, fried rice, japchae, pork buns, chicken katsu, bulgolgi and bibimbap. If you are coming here, make the fried chicken the centerpiece and only augment with other dishes if needed. You can get only wings, drumsticks, or chicken strips by themselves in small, medium and large sizes or you can go with one of their combo deals which has all three cuts. If you are getting the drumsticks just know that they are large as they are the drumstick size, not the small wing drumstick. Pickled Radish - Can you call it pickled radish if it doesn't taste pickled? How does a Korean restaurant mess up pickled goods, especially something as simple as radish? I don't know, but this was almost the same as biting into raw, unseasoned radish. Normally pickled radishes provide a welcome relief to the burn of the hot wings, but these did not. Sliders - We opted for soy garlic chicken sliders and it tasted the same as the regular soy garlic chicken, just put between two doughy buns. You receive three sliders with generous servings of meat topped with pickled slaw. Soy Garlic Wings - These were nice and crisp but it was missing a little something in the sauce. First and foremost, there wasn't enough sauce on the chicken. Secondly, it didn't have enough garlic flavor in the sauce. It was soy sweet, with subtle hint of garlic. Really subtle. These are not spicy at all. Spicy Wings - Of the two wing flavors, the spicy ones have a lot more flavor. It's sweet and has a nice kick to it, but it's not Elon Musk Flamethrower hot. Your mouth may experience a burn for 10 minutes, but it's not going to burn for a couple of hours like Kyochon's does (which I love). If I had to choose, I would go with the spicy first over the soy garlic. If you are eating with people that have spiciness issues, then ask your server to make your chicken order half and half... Half soy garlic and half spicy. I usually avoid the full drumsticks not because I don't like drumsticks, but more because I don't feel there is enough sauce and flavor to match the bigger pieces of meat. The service here is good. Food arrived in a timely matter and they regularly came around with drink refills. If I had never had Korean fried chicken before I would think Bon Chon Costa Mesa was really good. But unfortunately I've spoiled myself trying other places and I know better. The good thing is that most of this location's shortcomings are remediable, we'll just have to see if they make some adjustments (more sauce on their chicken, better quality pickled radishes) over the coming months. read more

6/1/20 - I get it. Covid and protests etc. That doesn't mean that businesses have to give less service or quality. Many recent reviews are saying service and attention to orders is lacking. I can confirm. Placed an order for lunch and they messed it up. Aside from that - the quality is subpar to what they had pre-Covid times. The chicken strips are now chicken thins - almost like they have been slicing the tenders in half. Sauce is very skimpy and they won't sell any extra so you get dry chicken thins. Very disappointed they didn't include my side of white rice which means I got someone's squid balls - which is absolutely stinky. The comparison of chicken is in the pictures Bonchon for the win ! After a horrific bloody chicken disaster I still wanted chicken so I decided to try this spot since it's been open for a while and always busy. It's nestled between Bad Coffee (amaZing) and Kickin Crab. The chicken strips are lightly crispy - kinda like a tempura with a super delicious glaze. The spicy is hot and so good, the soy is salty and perfect with the slaw. The pork belly buns needed a vinegar splash to offset the fat but good. I wish there was a location in Los Angeles, their chicken is soooo darn good! This is the only kind of korean chicken that I like eating. Always go half spicy and half soy, they both taste so good! The spice level is tolerable compared to other spicy korean chicken wings I've tried. Their bibimbap was good, but was lacking some flavor. Why have I not been here sooner?! I've seriously been missing out! As of late, I've been on a fried chicken binge -- exclusively for Korean fried chicken and Nashville hot chicken. I have heard of this restaurant many times, but it wasn't put on my radar until Covid. I'm so happy that I finally gave this place a visit because this establishment completely exceeded my expectations for both flavor profile and texture! It really is one of the best Korean fried chicken I've ever eaten, to date! The chicken is so tender, juicy, crispy, and saucy! There is a precise balance to crispiness and sauciness in every bite which makes this place such a top contender in my book! Every single bite is absolute perfection and finger lickin' gooood! They got their technique down to a science with their double-frying that keeps the chicken magically crunchy even with takeout. I've tried both the soy garlic and spicy flavor and both are excellent. But because I'm more of a spice head, the spicy flavor is more suited for my palette. While the spicy flavor packs some heat, it's more of a sweet Asian chili heat. The seasoned fries were also fire! It is seasoned and dusted so perfectly with grated Parmesan that I could not stop eating it. Mm-Mm! And a quick shoutout to the free side of pickled daikon -- so good! The radish has a little bite to it as it's slightly sweet and tangy, with a crisp and crunchy texture. This Bonchon is pretty consistent with the Bonchon I go to in San Diego and the one I visited in NYC. I would give the place 4 stars or the wings but the service is always a sh**show. Same as in San Diego and in NYC, so at least I don't have to take it personally! My sister-in-law tried to get me to bring back some on the plane ride back from NYC. First off, they would end up in my belly and secondly, I did not want my carry on to reek of chicken. But I digress. The way I look at it is that I am there for the food and the food alone, and until I am able to replicate these wings, I will be forced to come back for my KFC fix. Onto the positive points: their wings are served up piping hot, nice and crispy with plenty of juicy flavor. I am a fan of their signature spicy soy garlic. It never fails me. My first experience at Bonchon was in North Carolina with my parents. The food was great, the atmosphere was pleasant, and they had fantastic weekly lunch specials. (Plus the NC one had K-Pop music I recognized playing softly in the background.) When I learned there was a location in Costa Mesa, I made a point to visit with my dad when he was out here helping me car shop post-accident. We came on a Friday night, around 9 PM and found parking in the shared lot with Kicking Crab. We were seated right away but it was packed that night and there were not that many waiters working that evening. I was surprised that there were so many families with young children there at the hour, but they were big parties so I wondered if they had to wait longer for tables to pushed together. Service was slow that evening and the wait staff was constantly running back and forth to the window to ask about everyone's orders. I think the kitchen got backed up that night because the chicken came out a bit soggy and not as crisp as I remembered it. I nearly wrote this location off as a disaster, but my dad suggested I try another time when it wasn't as busy. I came back on a Sunday afternoon in between lunch and dinner. Much quieter and I was seated right away. Service was a bit slow - you did have to flag down the waiter to ask for more water or extra napkins. I ordered spicy rice cakes and the spicy chicken strips. This time the latter came out with a crispy outer - less people dining, less orders clogging up the fryers. The rice cakes have an excellent texture and sauce. I wish there were a few more rice cakes in there - one had to search around under the garnish and onion pieces to find them. Prices are high if you're dining at a time that isn't the lunch special. You do get a lot of food for leftovers. Staff here aren't rude per se, but I kept getting some that seem to be going through the motions. Ohh man was I craving fried chicken wings, saw that this place was 2nd on a YouTube video of top ten best chicken places and this was one of two I have yet to experience. I was a bit disappointed.. the wing skins were crispy but that's about it.. it was overcooked and a bit dry and I ordered the soy garlic which had no garlic flavor at all. Went here for lunch and took advantage of the lunch specials. I got the 8 piece soy garlic wings with French fries and the Bonchon wrap with bulgolgi and pickled radish. My chicken wings weren't even fully dressed with sauce. Could totally tell they don't really care about their quality and flavor as much as before. I was able to flag down a waiter and got my chicken dressed with more sauce which only took like a minute. I appreciated the swiftness of the service, but that just goes to show how the kitchen really didn't bother taking a few extra seconds to ensure quality food. The dressing was way more soy flavored than garlic so it just tasted salty. I'm not sure if they changed their recipe or just didn't bother to make a decent batch this time around. You can compare the pictures I uploaded. The chicken before was more brown and actually tasted like soy sauce and garlic while this time around it was way darker and just tasted like soy sauce. The pickled radish wasn't really pickled which made that pretty disappointing. It just tasted plain and unappetizing. I'm giving this place 2 stars this time because the service was just pretty bad. The Asian waiter with the slicked back hair obviously does not enjoy his job. I literally had to ask for a glass of water three times before getting it. It's like you tell him you need something and then a few seconds later he just walks by or starts doing something else. Then I asked for an extra plate and same story, except this time I never got my plate. He doesn't even ask how my table is doing or anything. At least pretend to smile to the customers. I'd be more understanding if the place was super busy, but that wasn't the case. The other waiter who I think is Hispanic was way more friendly and accommodating. He actually did what was requested in a timely manner. I don't think I'll be coming back here for a while because of this experience. I love my KFC (Korean Fried Chicken) and Bonchon does a great job of balancing crispy batter/skin with saucy flavors. The boyfriend really loves coming here, so it's not a bad choice to satiate some KFC cravings. The location is off of Adams and Harbor, right next to The Kickin Crab. The spot is huge with high ceilings, plenty of lighting, soju/beer/wine bar and a great happy hour deal for nearby schools and residences. Menu is simple and straightforward with only two options of flavors: Soy Garlic or Spicy. From there, you can choose wings, drums, strips or a combo of wings/drums. Boyfriend and I usually share a medium wings set, half/half order of spicy and soy garlic. You can totally dictate how many too, such as 5 spicy and 15 soy garlic to match your preferences. If you like em spicy, definitely give them a shot. They do pack a bit of a bite that hits you in the face, but the steam dissipates in a few minutes, so there's not a long burn after eating them. You might just sweat a little haha. If you like the crispy skin on wings, try them out! This is the main reason why bf loves Bonchon. It's crispy and the meat is still tender/juicy so you're not missing out on one for the other. The drumsticks are way bigger in comparison to the wings, but it's really up to you what you like better. We prefer wings over drumsticks, so usually stick with what we like. Aside from wings, they also have other options to fill you up like fries, salad, udon noodles and other appetizers. I have yet to try out their College Night specials on Thursdays from 5-9:30PM, but it's a nice discount if you make it in. Drink Specials are unbeatable with $2 HIte and $3 Sapporo! Sooooo good!! We ordered through Uber Eats and had our order ready within the hour. We got the 10 PC soy garlic and spicy along with 3 bulgogi tacos. They were both delicious!! Chicken was a bit salty but that's why they give you radish. The pickled radish balances it so well! The chicken was some of the crispiest we've had and each bite was perfectly coated. The soy garlic flavor chicken stripes tasted terrible even the batter on the chicken was soggy from so much sauce. I think if you're not getting spicy chicken here might as well not even try it. It's easy to make food look good from a photo then it doesn't always taste good Food wasn't cheap just for 2 items cost me over $20 with tip. They have the perfect Korean crispy fried chicken here! I know many people love Koko's chicken in Garden Grove, but I feel like these wings taste now flavorful and are much crunchier. I always order takeout for family parties and football nights with the friends - these wings are demolished within minutes. If you can handle spicy food then definitely try the spicy wings. Bonchon offers Korean-style fried chicken that is in a word, totally awesome. Yes that is two words, but both are well deserved. Whether you prefer the sweet crunchy soy sauce version, or the deceptively spicy crunchy version, you will be left wondering why you did not come here sooner. The thin shell is satisfyingly crunchy and light enough to allow you to enjoy several at one go. Though you might need a break between spicy ones because the heat really builds up! By the way, they have other items too that are incredibly tasty. I had the good fortune to come here with a friend who knew what to order beyond the chicken. We had some amazing off-menu kimchi fried rice (pictured), that struck just the right balance between savory and spicy, which blended nicely with the fried egg on top. We also had delicious pot stickers that showed me what real potstickers were supposed to be like, i.e. 100 times better than anything I've tried to make myself. They had both the sweet variety and the spicy variety. We also had some japchae noodles as part of the feast which was really great as well. On top of all this, they also have several beers on tap and different kinds of sake available. For happy hour you can get a good-sized pitcher for a pretty good price. However, I think they used 2-3 different batches of chicken to fulfill our order. I would eat one wing that would be hot and moist, another that was insanely dry, and another that was lukewarm. There was zero consistency. The radish I got was also not good at all. As a Korean American, I need my radish with my Korean fried chicken. This radish tasted like it was pickled 15 minutes prior. It was WARM and had no pickling. Very disappointing. Service - 8 Only have gotten takeout. We finally got seated and the chairs were sticky and had good bits on them. Wish they would've cleaned it up a bit more. They were out of radishes and out of fries. Some of the coating was done just right, but then there were some that didn't have any crunch at all... instead it is dark and greasy, suggesting it was just fried too long or in old oil. Spicy is better than the soy garlic flavor - not too spicy (a good medium). A few bites were good, moist and flavorful, but the rest didn't have much flavor beyond what's on the dry stiff coating. We arrived here for a late lunch around 1pm Saturday and there was no wait. We were starving and we ordered: Large combo - 15 wings and 8 drumsticks with a side of daikon radish. Half spicy and half garlic soy sauce glaze. Hite Korean beer on draft For 2 people, the large combo was way too much food for us! Note to self: Do not order while hangry! The drumsticks were large not small. We ordered half spicy and half garlic soy sauce. The spicy wings had a nice gochujang glaze that increments in heat as you eat it. The daikon radish really helped to counteract the spiciness of the chicken. The garlic soy sauce glaze was delicious and a great alternative if you don't enjoy spicy foods. We love how light and crisp the chicken is here and the glaze/seasoning is perfect. It's now our favorite spot for Korean chicken wings. When I was in the area, I was craving for some fried chicken. Thankfully Bonchon was nearby. We ordered the drumsticks with both the flavors. They were very crunchy and the flavor is just right. The radish with the chicken is always on point. I always love Bonchon and is probably my favorite fried chicken place. The service was nice. The two lady was very helpful and guided/helped us on what the best value for our group. I did not have a hard time finding parking because is located in a plaza with a bunch of parking spaces. Bonchon specializes in Korean Fried Chicken (KFC). I arrived at a few minutes past 12, ordered and didn't receive my meal till about 12:45. I ordered from their lunch specials ($10) which was 8 pieces of chicken strips with a side. I opted for the kimchi coleslaw. The 8 pieces of chicken strips were plentiful and had a light batter on the outside. The meat itself was dry. Half of my order was garlic and soy and the other half was spicy. I preferred the taste of the garlic and soy. By the time I finished my chicken I was a little bored with eating just chicken. Warning the chicken has a VERY high MSG count, as myself and coworkers found ourselves gulping glasses of water at the restaurant and afterwards. The kimchi coleslaw was ok, but couldn't salvage the chicken. I wish there were some additional sides, such as some banchan and rice to go with the chicken to make it a TRUE lunch special. Overall the wait time, the dry chicken, high MSG count, and the lack of accompaniments for the meal left me disappointed. read more

2 Stars - "Meh I've experienced better". Nominally, I would give this 3 stars for A-Ok, but the situation is that I have actually experienced better - I ate at Bonchon while I was in Bangkok. The one I had there was super fresh, wonderfully crispy outer layer with super juicy meat. Right amount of sauce and everything. The chicken I had hear left a lot to be desired; in fact, I would say I preferred the Japchae to the Chicken we received. Ordered a half/half of the Soy Garlic and Sweet Crunch. The flavors were not strong enough to really sense a strong difference between them, and they are totally on the opposite ends of flavor spectrum! The soy garlic needed much more soy and garlic. They both had a nice crisp crunch when biting into them, but where they lost major points is that they were quite overcooked; the underlying meat was dry. Where the meat was thin (towards the ends), they were overcooked to being crispy and unedible (the meat). In the middle, the chicken was still OK. Really wish they had consistent product across locations! The one in Bangkok was super nice and fancy and bumpin'; the location here was small (nothing wrong with that), but felt like there was nothing special or stand out. read more

The strength of this place isn't actually their chicken but everything else. Don't get me wrong, their chicken is good, but I have had better at other Korean fried chicken places. The bulgogi tacos, pork bun and popcorn chicken are great. Service is faster than other similar restaurants and the place is very clean with plenty of table space to spread out food and drinks. My one warning is to avoid the bull dak unless you have a stomach and tongue of steel because it is so hot I was literally crying. They warn you that it's spicy but it is insanely spicy compared to their spicy chicken. They should tone down this spice or offer an alternative or else they'll keep getting this sent back to the kitchen for being inedible for most people.
