I got the family meal: - Bulgogi fried rice - Wings (Soy Garlic & Spicy) - Two sides (Cole slaw, pickled raddish, or fries) It was TASTY! The spicy was a bit too spicy to me so probably won't get it next time. The soy garlic was really good though. The double-fried wings make it different from other places. I also liked the Bulgogi fried rice, although the Bulgogi meat pieces are so small, you can't really taste it. I'm not sure if I'd order this again. I also got the seasoned fries which was great! I wish they would open a location in North OC, but honestly I would be willing to drive the 20ish min to Costa Mesa for some solid KFC (Korean Fried Chicken). Especially since the Kyochon in BP has been falling flat for me constantly... We ordered the medium combo half & half and it was every bit delicious as I remembered. Our order only took about 10 min because we came at an odd time so our order was the only one at the time. The chicken pieces are huge!!! The drums are literally so big, but still super moist and crunchy and saucy. I'm more of a wings girl, so I would order only wings to eat by myself the next time I come. The wings are smaller so they have more batter to meat ratio which I LOVE. Their spicy sauce is actually spicy and has a good kick. I always get a side of the pickled radish because it's such a staple when eating KFC and cuts the grease of the chicken soooo well. I got the spicy sauce and it was so-so; it didn't taste like the traditional spicy sauce. I ended up taking my leftovers to go. The pickled radish tasted better the day after so I feel like the radish might've been too fresh. The server was nice. There was only one but it makes sense because it was lunchtime. However I tried to dine in two weeks before and I think they're understaffed because dine-in was closed for half the day. The wings are quite expensive at over $1 per wing. Got take out for a work lunch, satisfied with the portion size, flavor, and price. Would consider ordering again and trying more of the menu. I had recently had Japanese chicken elsewhere (Tenkatori is delicious) so I was craving something else and settled on the Bonchon Wrap with Bulgogi protein. I added on sides of Edamame and Kimchi. The bulgogi was juicy and flavorful, and paired well with the ranch dressing and spicy mayo sauces also included. Between all three of these, it was too saucy and a bit of oil had leaked from inside the wrap and pooled on the bottom of the to-go container. The avocado, lettuce, and onions were also fine in this burrito. It's a hybrid of Korean-Latino cuisine, leaning towards Latino with the bulgogi almost seeming like an afterthought. Perhaps some kimchi inside (replacing the onions and lettuce and spicy mayo) could go well, maybe some corn too. I point to the Korean BBQ Burrito at Toast in Costa Mesa, which leans more korean with cheese corn, kimchi, and pork belly. Overall the Bonchon wrap was good, I'd get it again and ask for a bit less spicy mayo. The side of kimchi was solid, medium spiciness (I prefer more mild), though rich flavor. Bonchon's batter is known to be thicker than other Korean fried chicken spots, but what I got at this location was RIDICULOUS. I ordered the original wings and drumsticks (without sauce). The batter was so thick that I had to take two bites before I got any meat, not to mention the only flavor I tasted from the batter was oil. The meat also tasted like they forgot to season it. I've been here several times and love their KFC what I don't love is their service. But I deal with it because it's the only place close to where I live that serves good KFC and fried rice. Every time we go, we always order 20 piece wings, half soy garlic (classic) and half spicy. Their flavor is really good, but there's a lot of breading. Probably about 50 percent of the wing is covered in breading and air and the other 50 percent is chicken. But like I said, the flavors are really good. The spicy flavor is also really good. Their wings come with a side of pickle raffish, kimchi, kimchi cabbage, or few few other things that have a small upcharge. I recently tried their new flavor the sweet crunch, which I think is just ok. It's a bit too sweet for my taste. Their fried rice is super good. I love the flavors and the texture is just right. I usually get the chicken friend rice, but it comes vegetarian too I believe. The crappy thing about the place is that every time I come, the restaurant is usually full and there are only two people working the front and 2 or 3 people in the back. Several times that I come, there are empty tables that have not been cleaned and bussed. So there's a line, but it's because the tables are not cleaned. The wait for the food is also pretty long, which I guess is fine because it's fried chicken. The last time we came, the waitress dropped a couple of our chicken pieces and it took them 20 minutes to replace the two pieces! This place is good, but probably only to buy food to go. On July 2 I ordered $77 worth of food online and my Venmo account was instantly charged. I noticed I didn't get an order confirmation as is customary. My daughter went in to pick up and there was no record of my order. She walked away without food. The next day I started a dispute via Venmo and heard nothing. It seems Venmo made an inquiry but Bonchons hasn't responded and its been over a month. The Bonchon order history says "send failure" whatever that means. So besides taking your money and not providing food, they stonewall the debit card company. Not a good look. They were spicy too but I couldn't stop eating it. 45 minutes later and I still feel the heat. No complaints here with the level of spiciness. First time trying the Costa Mesa location, came for Sunday dinner and place was about half full. Located in a pretty crowded plaza, they also have a bar area (beer and soju) where you can wait if you're ordering to-go. For my 100th review for the 2018 Yelp Challenge, I'd like to share with you an international KFC chain. BTW, if you know how to add reviews to a "collection", please let me know. Because these dumb fuks at Yelp made it so hard to navigate collections vs lists, I can't figure out how to do it. I've been meaning to go to Bonchon, next to Kicking Crab in Costa Mesa. However, a rellie grabbed takeout, so I was able to experience the food w/o driving to CM. We had wangs (more than $1 each), strips (more like patties), kimchee bacon fried rice, japchae, bulgogi, and pork belly baos (not all items pictured). I don't know the prices of all the items. However, I remember the prices being high. First of all, the wangs were very good. We chose spicy & garlic soy sauces. The wings were meaty, and had good flavor. The only downsides were the spicy ones could have had more kick, and the price was high: 4 Stars. Secondarily, the fried rice was pretty tasty and it was filling. However, it too had a more mild taste vs what I've had in KTown: 4 Stars. Thirdly, the japchae was OK. The noodles were too thin for my liking. The japchae at Arirang market is better and it is refrigerated: 3 Stars. Lastly, the pork belly baos were disappointing. The pork belly seemed overcooked, and the baos were dry: 2 Stars. The service seemed good. My rellie placed a phone order and the food was ready on time. In addition, there were no items missing: 4 Stars. All in all, a much better experience vs Koko's in GG. We got the Soy Garlic wings and the Spicy wings, and both were well-seasoned but not very crispy. I was also a little disappointed by the small amount of meat on the wings!! We asked for the Cole Slaw side but they gave us Radish instead. The Radish was also quite dry. As for the Bul Ddak order, it was overall just okay. Nothing special and the cheese pull was a little on the disappointing end of cheese puls I've tried haha. It is quite spicy though so I'd only recommend this to those who love spicy food. It comes with a side of rice, but I still don't think it's worth the price point. Oh my god. I am so happy. Fried zucchini is my childhood indulgence and when Ruby's removed it from their menu I almost cried. Bonchon has the best fried zucchini (or zucchini fries, as they call it) anywhere. So glad to discover a new place serving this favorite treat! The fried chicken is also excellent. **Service was about 3 stars and quality of food 4 stars** Heard good things about this place up North but had never eaten here until earlier this week. We came in for dinner with the family and my inlaws. My FIL walked in ahead of us and had our server put together a large table for all of us and we were seated immediately. After taking a look at the menu, we all agreed on the Soy Garlic 30 piece wings ($33.95) an order of the Soy Garlic potstickers, the House Fried Rice and an order of the Bulgogi. My husband and I noticed they had Hite beer on tap ($4) and that made my night. Lol Hite beer is such a great light beer and not easy to find. I've only seen it at one other Korean restaurant near where we live in the East Bay. Anyhow, the Soy Garlic Potstickers came out first, they were hot, crispy and super delicious we ended up getting another order. ($10.95) x 2 The House Fried Rice came out next and that was also tasty. The rice was light, fluffy and didn't come out in a sticky clump as some rice tends to. We ended up ordering a second bowl ($10.95) x 2 The Bulgogi came out after that and that was okay. It wasn't marinated enough and had more bits of onions and mushrooms in it than actual meat. Somehow we ended up ordering an extra of this dish as well. The second order had a little more of the Bulgogi, but it was still lacking in marinade/sauce ($16.95) x 2 Funnily enough, as everything came out staggered the second orders of the potstickers, House Fried rice and Bulgogi still came out before the chicken. And by the time the chicken did come out, everything was already destroyed by our party of 10 and all that was left to wait for was the KFC. We inquired twice about the status of the chicken and were blown off by our server both times, when it finally made its appearance it came out all drumsticks and maybe 3 or 4 wings. When it was mentioned we had ordered the 30 piece wings the server nonchalantly said "No, you ordered the combo", which we didn't. Okay... It turned out fine though, turned out the drumsticks were gigantic and had a lot of meat on them. The chicken was hot and had a really nice crunch which KFC: Korean fried chicken is known for. However, there wasn't much sauce or flavor to them. The service was definitely lacking as well as the timing in the kitchen. The food had a few bumps but I could tell the ingredients were quality and the KFC had that great crunch and was just missing the flavors.
