Love this place. The food is amazing (I recommend the garlic fries and chicken wings for sure) and I love the atmosphere.

I stopped here for lunch with a friend on a Friday afternoon. The chicken wings were freakin awesome. Crispy and hot with the right amount of sauce. We got some of both the sweet and spicy wings. I will say I'm kind of a spice wimp, they were a bit too hot for me but I had like three anyway, because the beets that came with them are sweet and cooling. I got the bip and bap, it was hot and satisfying. We even got an ice cream trio that was really good, the green tea flavor was my favorite. We got there kind of early so we beat any kind of crowd. When we left they were filling up. I could imagine it gets pretty full for happy hour and what not. Also, they had some craft beer options and CT specific which always makes me happy. read more

I just don't see what all the fanfare is all about. To me, this place comes across as being an Applebee's (or Chili's) of fried chicken. Bonchon is a chain restaurant scattered throughout the country. The chicken is alright. It's not as mind blowing or a religious food experience like some Yelpers are alluding. The interior is nice, but perhaps it is a little too plastic-y for me. It looks fake. It looks manufactured. It's got that typical chain restaurant appearance. Like I said, Bon Chon comes across as an Applebee's of fried chicken. Service is OK, albeit a little chaotic. It was hard for me to distinguish who was a worker and who was a patron, because the workers don't dress any differently than the patrons. Yes the garlic sauce is good, but the spicy soy sauce has no "flavor" IMO. Sure the spicy soy sauce is hot, there's no denying that, but being hot by itself is necessarily a flavor. I wish it were a little more sosphisticated, rather than just setting my tongue on fire. read more

Spicy is VERY spicy... good flavor but it's HOT by my (Caribbean descent) standard. I don't know how they make it so crispy, but it's the crispiest chicken I've ever tasted in my life. Popeyes WHO?!?? I also love the Potstickers and Salads. 5 stars because of the quality, quantity, and portion size at Bonchon. You get a lot of food for the cost ! Just a quick stop for a drink. We got a quick friendly welcome as soon as we stepped in. We were directed to a few seat options in the bar. Three big TVs in the bar area. Very friendly bartender, Jenny. She gave us an overview of some liquor we were not familiar with. We asked several questions while she made drinks in front of us and she was very engaging. She asked what we were up to for the night and asked about the band we were going to see. Great asset to the staff!! The high ceilings and brick made it a little loud but not unbearable. My first experience during their opening week was far less than stellar, when the chicken tasted more like oil than soy garlic. However, I'm glad I decided to come back because my more recent experiences here are far better! +SOY GARLIC WINGS: I love the soy garlic sauce! (On top of that, the spicy is just too spicy for me.) The wings are tasty and perfectly crispy. The pickled radish also cut through the oiliness pretty well. +SEASONED FRENCH FRIES: Whatever seasoning on this makes it super tasty! It has parmesan and parsley, and I don't need ketchup. Honestly, this together with the garlic wings make a great lunch. I definitely preferred this over the regular french fries. The staff are really friendly and there hasn't been a wait since their first opening week (when I've been there). If you're worried about that, I've had it via takeout and after getting home, both the fries and fried chicken are crispy. Granted, I do live within a 10-minute walk. To be honest, some of their options seem out of place for a Korean fried chicken restaurant. For example, they offer takoyaki and popcorn shrimp. This is also the first Korean restaurant where I've had to pay for the kimchi separately. Food 5/5: The food came out within 5 minutes of ordering. We ordered the TTeokbokki, Korean Tacos, and medium wings with soy garlic and spicy. The TTeokbokki was really good and spicy. You would think they would drop the spice level down to cater to New Haven, but they kept it traditionally spicy. The rice cakes were soft and the fish cakes had lots of flavor. It also comes with fried japchae noodles on top of it.The Korean Tacos were decent. The bulgogi was tender and the flavors were great. The tortilla was the bad thing about it. "These wings are tasty. And scary," my friend mused. That's a perfect way to put it. Yelp reviews kept us away during prime time, so we ventured here on a Saturday at 4pm. There were a handful of other parties here, but by the time we left, the restaurant was more than half full. It took a surprising amount of time to order, and you could tell the manager of was picking up some slack from people who were possibly on a quick break during this slower time. After ordering, though, the food came out quickly. The strips and drumsticks are heavily breaded, more than other Korean fried chicken I've had in the past - even from other Bonchons. The chicken was tasty, but you couldn't help but think that their size was a little too unusually large. The pork buns were good but not as amazing at Mecha's down the road. I stopped by Bonchon with 2 friends on a Thursday evening around 6 PM. We thought we'd have to wait, as there were several people waiting outside and in the inner entrance. But happily, we were seated right away! The ambiance and vibe inside is super chill -- red and black decor with great rap music playing at a decent volume (but not so loud that you're screaming across the table thankfully...looking at you Mecha...) We ordered a bunch of food and ate family style -- the fried chicken wings, bulgogi sliders, truffle fries, and Korean tacos with spicy chicken for appetizers and the house fried rice and japchae for entrees. Per my meat-eating friends, the fried chicken wings and Korean tacos were amazing (many sounds were made while eating them). There were mixed reviews on the bulgogi sliders however. The seasoned fries were literally perfect. Cooked to a crispy perfection on the outside, soft and warm on the inside with just the right amount of Parmesan and parsley flakes sprinkled on top. They came with ketchup but we also ordered the spicy Japanese mayo, which just added a whole other level of amazingness. Our waitress described the mayo as "extremely extremely spicy." Not sure how much I agree as I consider myself an amateur in terms of spiciness tolerability, and I didn't find it that hot at all... The house fried rice was delicious -- you can really taste the soy garlic sauce. I also liked the japchae, but slightly less so as I found it a bit too oily. Finally the service: our waitress was...meh... we were brought plain fries at first instead of the truffle fries. The guys who brought our food out were super apologetic and sweet, but the waitress seemed busy, rushed and tried to blame us (we know what we said lady...) Get the wings with the spicy sauce. Skip the drums and tteokbokki. The chicken is sauced here very lightly, which I appreciate. The spicy is less sweet than the soy but barely spicy. The coating on the chicken is right between crisp and crunchy - it has an eggshell like coating but it's got a substantial crunch to it. It's a thicker, crunchier shell than some other korean fried chicken I've had but far less thick and substantial than KFC (the colonel). Chicken may have been a bit over fried. Recommend the wings, not huge drums. Probably due to a longer fry time to cook through to the center, drums are a little dry. The pickled radish wasn't very fresh and it was cut into all sorts of random shapes. Mostly sweet, lacked acidity so it wasn't very effective for that cleanse. Takeout will start next week, whether they do delivery (ubereats) is primarily dependent on kitchen capacity and throughout. As they're getting slammed already, I can't realistically expect them to have the capacity to do delivery. Service was passable - hopefully will improve. Perhaps the servers are a little green. Udon was good - decent depth to the dashi, more than I expected to be honest. Solid shiitake hit. Udon noodles were a little too soft from soaking around for so long, but that's almost to be expected Tteokbokki was bad - not chewy enough which speaks to either undercooking or old tteok, sauce wasn't sweet enough (by korean authentic standards), perfect amount of heat though. The cheese was especially bad, somewhat weird tasting and just by looking at how it melted on top but you could still identify the shreds, suggests that it was preshredded cheese that comes in a bag with a starch coating to prevent sticking. Didn't bring the fresh milky richness that it's there for. read more

This place finally opened its doors after the signs have been up for what seemed like an eternity and then some. The problem with surging anticipation is that the product often ends up failing to deliver, and the New Haven Bonchon experience was no exception. A group of us went on a Friday afternoon around 3 pm. The spot was empty, and even so, the food took a good while to come out. About a good 45 minutes had passed, and we were finally eating. My Korean fried chicken was pretty tasty. The waiter had warned me during ordering about how the spice level of the chicken was almost too much for him, and I smirked at that time. I had no regrets since the chicken was not spicy at all. The tteokbokki, on the other hand, was not spicy either and was actually kind of gross in flavoring. It was too salty, too sweet, and dare I say it, too cheesy! If I had to do it all over again, I would have just suck with the wings. We should have probably also just ordered take out because the place filled up to max capacity from completely empty in the hour and a half we dined. It became so noisy and crowded. read more

Not sure what to say about Bonchon. At first, they were quite good - the chicken drumsticks were good, the batter was well-cooked, the radishes were fresh. Now that they've experienced their popularity, their serving sizes are getting smaller, the radishes are less crisp, and worst of all, the last time that I went our chicken was not fully cooked, and each person in our group came out with an upset stomach. Aside from the chicken: Ddeokbokki (the spicy rice cakes): one liner: just spicy, not authentic. There's not any depth to the dish, it seems like they used low-quality pepper flakes to season the dish, and cover up the B-quality taste with cheese. Would never order again. Honestly you can get better tasting instant ddeokbokki from a Korean grocery store or even from Amazon these days. Bulgogi: Pretty good, but very expensive ($17 I think, and that would make it comparable to prices in NYC, which is ridiculous). Just sweet enough, good seasoning, comes with a side of vegetables, which I was happy about. However, I remember getting this just around when they opened, and I'm not sure if the quality of this has gone down along with the quality of the chicken. I'd been waiting for Bonchon to open for monthsssss and finally it has. I got the chance to go there a few days ago with my friends and it was pretty enjoyable. The physical lay-out is quite small but it fits right into downtown New Haven. We sat at the bar and ordered our food. I got the fried rice and my friends got the infamous wings. The rice was decent but I have better at other places. We inquired about a happy hour menu and the bartender told us that would begin this coming week which will be worth making another trip for. Love me some bonchon. My best friend and I order from here frequently! We get the tenders half and half, so half spicy half soy garlic. Delicious. But what's interesting is you basically play Russian roulette with the spice level on the spicy sauce. There have been times when my spicy food loving $ss cannot handle the heat and other times it's not as spicy. Not sure why it's not consistent, but guess it makes the experience more fun! I walked in at 10 pm tonight, 11/19/19, looking for a quick bite to eat on a tired evening. The woman at the register by the entrance gave me a very negative look. When I asked how late they were open she answered in a very discouraging way, 11 PM. When I asked her what time it was now, she said in even more discouraging tone that it was already 10 PM. Look, I could be wrong, but it seem pretty obvious they did not want me to eat there tonight. I have no idea why. A big guy with a T-shirt, who looked like the bouncer, even turned around to give me a dirty look when he heard her tone. I've never set foot in this restaurant before in my life. I was extremely well-dressed and well groomed. There were about six people in the restaurant, and it seem to me that at least three of the six were staff of the restaurant. It's not a lot of customers. Everyone's eyes were glued on the TV screen sports channels. Everyone in the restaurant was watching TV. With no good reason to discourage a customer, it makes you wonder a little bit how interested this late-night stuff is an encouraging customers to eat there. Is the staff's focus on not being bothered so they can watch sports late at night? That was my impression tonight. I would have to be very hard-pressed to return to this restaurant. read more

I have embarked on a quest for amazing food in CT and the surrounding area. My sister and I found full flavor at Bonchon. I did my research, read reviews, and studied the menu before our dinner. I opted to order the Bibmpap and Japache, which was highly recommended on many sites. The goal was to have a little bit of both and have leftovers. The Japache was so darn good, after I boxed it up for home, I continued to eat it. I ended up ordering another whole entree to bring home! The Bibmpap offers lots of flavors and veggie options. As much as I like the versatility, I like bulgogi so much, I think next time, I'll order straight bulgogi and a side of kimchi or pickled radish. To be entirely truthful, I did not have high expectations of Bonchon heading into dinner. My previous experience with Bonchon (in Storrs, CT) left much to be desired. However, tonight I spotted Bonchon's student discount through Snackpass and decided to give Bonchon a second shot. I ordered the udon noodle soup and my boyfriend ordered the Bibimbap with spicy chicken and a fried egg. The interior and decor, as other reviewers have mentioned, are far from authentic, and not exactly inviting or cozy, resembling more of a Buffalo Wild Wings than a Korean restaurant. Yet because I was carrying out my order, I cannot speak too much about the in-store dining experience. The staff members who handed me my order were courteous and friendly, double-checking to make sure everything I ordered was in the bag. Even though the food had been sitting in the bag for about 20 minutes at this point, it was still piping hot and very fresh. I was most impressed by the udon noodle soup - the noodles were probably the most tender but bouncy noodles I've ever head. Biting into the noodles was like biting into a gummy cloud pillow - difficult to explain but hopefully you get the idea! Bonchon separated the dry udon noodles from the soup, so that probably contributed to its al-dente texture. Piled on top of the udon noodles was a generous serving of shiitake mushrooms and fragrant spring onions. The broth itself was incredible - even though I ordered the udon noodle soup without any meats, the broth was hearty and wonderfully savory. My boyfriend also really enjoyed his spicy chicken bibimbap - while they couldn't replicate the true "clay pot" experience, the rice was well-crisped and all the ingredients were packed to the brim of his container. Especially paired with the bibimbap sauce, the dish was bursting with flavor and a diversity of textures. Suffice to say, we will be coming back for more! read more
