Delicious fried chicken, but I think it's a bit pricey for what you're getting. Ordered some other sides like fried rice and tacos and they just wasn't cutting it. It has a casual and fun atmosphere which definitely makes it a downtown new haven spot. The staff was a bit aggressive or didn't really pay a whole lot of attention. Had to constantly ask for more napkins or more water. All in all, I would just come here if you're craving fried chicken. Things that are good: - wings - fries Things that were less good - the service - some servers are better than others, but sometimes it just feels like they don't really care or don't have time to care. - how consistent the "spicy" sauce heat is (variable between batches) - drumsticks (meat was not brined/marinated enough such that only the skin really had flavor) Things that were bothersome could easily be improved upon: - lack of a spicy sauce... some of our "spicy" wings were not spicy at all (again, batch variability) so we asked for an extra portion of spicy sauce and the server could only offer us spicy mayo. Not even sriracha? Not even the sauce that comes on the wings which you clearly have? (it felt like the staff didn't even try to accommodate us here) - the same amount of side is given for an order for 8 people as for 2 people - way too much for 2 but a tiny amount when dispersed among a party of 8. Should be based on the number of people eating rather than the number of platters ordered (because the largest combo will be feeding more people than the smallest combo...) Ultimately, the wings make it worth coming, and I hope they're just going through growing pains. But things need to be fixed for it to be somewhere I'd like to go back to in the future. read more

I went up to 2 stars because we finally did have a helpful server who tried to make things right but before that... We were seated right away at one of the high top tables. Our waitress was kind of friendly at first. She asked to take our drink orders: "Do you have any club soda that's not Pellegrino?" (I didn't see club soda or seltzer on their soft drinks list) "What's that? Is that like tonic water?" "No they're two different things." "I don't know if we have that...I don't drink either one of em." "Well (knowing they have a full bar) can you check?" "Do you want me to bring it out so you can taste and see?" "No...can you ask the bar if they have club soda and...bring me one?" "ok..." Believe it or not, their bar had club soda! An Easter miracle. After that we put in our order: I got bibimbap with tofu, my husband got the pork buns and the half and half (garlic/spicy wings mix) chicken strips to share, and my friend got a salad. Almost too quickly, some other servers came out with 3 orders of wings. We said half and half and they put one plate down in front of me and then they were trying to put another plate of one flavor in front of my husband. They weren't ours because we only ordered one plate and we ordered the strips. At this point the waitress attempted to argue with us that that's what we ordered, look at her notepad. Uh, nope. So then we hear the guys at the table behind us periodically complaining they're not getting what they ordered either. "This isn't even ours...we didn't even order these.." Etc. So they take the 3 plates away (since they weren't ours). The owner (?) comes over and tries to apologize and listen aganin to our order. My friend's salad eventually comes out first. Our waitress comes back and is trying to double check our order AGAIN. This time I got snippy because really, our order was not complicated. WHY DO YOU NEED TO CHECK 3 TIMES? And when I'd look at her sheet, it looked like she wrote everything down completely how we asked. By this point I think the management knew I was flipping out a little bit so they switched our waitress who was much nicer and placating. I appreciated that effort, anyway. As far as the food goes, the chicken strips were very breaded, the type that are a little hard to chew and impossible to cut without a knife (which are not on the tables). The spicy flavor was good but I'd prefer a softer texture. It was my first time having bibimbap so I have nothing to compare it to but I was kind of underwhelmed. The tofu was fried but 0 flavor (maybe it's supposed to be unflavored and only flavored by the sauce it's served with). The rice had a slight fishy flavor (again, I don't know if there's fish sauce or something similar added to the rice) but I wasn't expecting it. The other items in the dish were good - mushrooms, something yellow and crunchy, and sprouts. I didn't love the sauce either. I asked for sriracha to add which improved the flavor but made it a lot spicier. The portion was pretty big. Due to the service and clearly under-trained staff and the fact I was eh about my food, I honestly don't think I'd have a reason to come back any time soon. I will add the restaurant was not packed at this time (maybe 12-16 customers) so that was not a factor. So disappointed. read more

I've been to several BonChons in different cities. The chicken was pretty good - although was shocked at how big the chicken legs were. Also had the Tteokbokki, which is usually my favorite dish but found it to be so-so at this location. The cheese wasn't melted and the sauce was just a bit too spicy and not sweet enough. Great place to get authentic Korean fried chickens and more and I am approving this place as a Korean! The price is reasonable and they even have generous happy hours (almost all day on Sundays!) so it's a bargain. Food: Fried chickens are authentic and great. Both spicy and soy sauce have their own merits so I usually order half and half of them. Dishes other than chickens are also good. Their Takoyaki is really good and comparable to the real Japanese Takoyakis I had when I was in Japan. Teokbokki and rice and etc are all great as well. Ambience: Korean fried chicken should go with Kpop and indeed they do their job. I think the brick wall around the bar area is an overkill but the outer area is pretty decent. It is a bit dark for my taste for a chicken joint but perhaps they wanted to appeal more as a bar as well. Cleanliness and the table size are all on point. Service: Just the adequate amount of interaction and prompt serving/checking/billing etc. In fact, service used to be not as good as now when they first opened up but now I think they are on par with majority of competitive restaurants in town. Drinks: I think this is their weakness for now. They can expand their drink menu a bit with more selection of beer/wine etc. But draft Sapporo still goes very well with their chicken. Overall, this is a solid place to enjoy authentic Korean fried chicken with friends and have some beer as well. This is one of the best dinner options in town with reasonable price (especially so during happy hours which is quite long!). read more

Updated: have now been three times and have to say that their starters and main dishes are on par with their chicken. While I believe the food and service has still been 5 stars, one negative interaction with a staff member leaves me with a 4 star review. We were seated near the door and asked the nearby staff member if it would be possible for the door to the outside to be closed. It's March in New Haven so still quite chilly outside. He seemed to acknowledge our request but then proceeded to ignore it and not offer any explanation as to why the door needed to be open. While I understand it helps drum up business for the activity inside the restaurant to filter into the street, it made my dining experience subpar. Even a brief explanation would have been nice. That being said, all the other staff have been great and accommodating. Went to a Bonchon in NYC for the first time last year and I loved it. Couldn't wait for this one to open in New Haven. Although their opening had been delayed by months, it was well worth the wait. I went on opening day and shared the dumplings and medium combo with a friend. The chicken was just as good as I remembered from my time in NYC. Crispy, flavorful and spicy (they have non-spicy option as well). The dumplings were a nice surprise and had similar flavorings to their chicken. I enjoyed the radish on the side as well as a break from the spice. Given it was their first day, there were still some kinks to be worked out. Their kitchen was a bit backed up but they did a good job of maintaining restaurant flow and not overburdening the kitchen by seating everyone. Service was friendly and attentive. Enjoyed the high ceilings and overall decor was quite modern. This will be one of my go tos in new haven and I will be back to try the rest of it. After visiting more than three times here, I think that I can see that this place is developing more and more. Doing the all pretty weak the waiting line was too long, but it's not happening these days. The Korean style fried chicken was a little bit different from what I expected. However they tasted really good. Other side dishes and starters were absolutely fascinating. I recommend shumai, dumplings and Korean tacos. And also I would highly recommend Scorpion bowl, which is a huge drink in a bowl. I think this is good for group people. And I think it's really good for us to be able to take out! We don't need to wait to be seated. Well after that so many months, now we finally have this Korean fried chicken restaurant in New Haven. Why shall we not welcome them?! :-) read more

Been watching Kim's Convenience on Netflix and I knew I had to try some of the Korean food they're always talking about. Everything was absolutely great! Ordered the bulgog (which is the steak dish) very good! Ask for a side of soy sauce if you want to add more flavor to it, I did and it was much better for my taste. The bibimbap was good, vegetables were very fresh! Could've had more chicken however. The chicken tacos were amazing!! My kiddo loved the fried chicken there. Good place to try out!! read more

This wings are just as I remember in my college days. I was so excited to hear this place opening. I had a craving late at night and decided to take the drive to new haven at 9 pm to get these wings of deliciousness. I called to make sure they do takeout and yes they do now. So I got my half and half wings and they were glorious. I recommend eating there as your wings will not get condensation/wet from the takeout box being closed. But regardless, when I got home those wings were crispy enough and delicious. It's kind of hard to explain the taste of these. You just have to try it yourself and enjoy the crispiest wings you'll ever try. And quick tip like someone else said, skip the drumsticks. There's just something about the wings. read more

Bf and I love KFC. Having lived in NJ for a year and close to Pal park and Fort Lee, we've had plenty of late night Korean bites. Still on soft opening mode as they just opened yesterday. This place was the #1 reason why we chose our apartment to live in. With the opening delayed a little less than a year, I'm so happy the restaurant finally opened before our lease ended. Order - Tofu bibimbap: first time ordering this bc I always go go the main chicken and fries. Rice was cooked with too much water, so pretty mushy in the center. I love how the hot stone burns and crisps up the ricr, but this was a fail also. I waited a good five minutes before mixing it up. So either the bowl wasn't sesame oiled properly, soggy rice, or hot stone bowl not hot enough. Toppings and sauce was delish though. Only ate a couple bites and had it wrapped up to go so I could fix it up and turn it to fried rice later. I'll prolly wait while they fix the cooking kinks before ordering this again. - Small combo: choose either soy garlic or spicy and comes with either coleslaw or daikon radish. Bf opted for the spicy version and coleslaw. These did not disappoint at all. Whooo!! Perfectly crispy and had an awesome crunch. Since the fried chicken is what Bonchon specializes in, I'm super stoked that they got it right. - Seasoned fries: with parm cheese and parsley I think. It has a crispy exterior and soft interior. Two thumbs up! Not sure how I can ask for more ketchup though. Service is a bit slow, but I am certain they'll improve before the grand opening. No mess ups on our order. Told our waitress about the rice, so hopefully that gets fixed too. I think it'll be a great place for happy hour with friends because of the variety of pitcher beers to choose from. Food here is pretty good. Ordered 20 wings and the bulgogi tacos. Be prepared to wait, they cook their chicken to order meaning that it'll take between 15-20 minutes. Only reason why this place gets a 4 star instead of a 5 is because the service was exceptionally slow. My husband is a big fan of the chicken here, and I finally got to join him for a lunch date to try it myself. We ordered a split order of spicy and soy garlic boneless wings, a sesame ginger salad and fried rice. The spicy chicken was REALLY spicy (too hot for my limits) but did have some good flavor and not just heat. I much preferred the soy garlic. Both had a nice crispy coating but weren't especially meaty. The fried rice was decent, but the salad was actually my favorite part of the meal. The dressing was excellent! This was like going to the Korean McDonald's but paying restaurant prices. I went to the Bonchon in Fairfield twice and the food was fabulous. The chicken was amazing, as in, the chicken strips were huge, juicy white meat with a thin breading and delicious flavoring. So imagine my surprise when I ordered the ten piece chicken strips and saw something I didn't even recognize as the same dish. The pieces were tiny, the breading was thick and hard and the chicken was dry inside. A few pieces were okay, but I commented that it wasn't at all like what we had at the Fairfield Bonchon. The server overheard me and explained that just that very week, they had changed the chicken, totally. WHAAAAAT????? Changed the main thing they're famous for and changed it NOT for the better? WHY? So disappointing! Trying to save money, maybe? Not worth the price now, no way, no how. I was 10 minutes late for the "lunch special", so paid $5 extra dollars for absolutely inferior chicken. I wouldn't have minded if it was what I had gotten before, but now I am back to having no decent place to get Korean fried chicken. Bummer! Bad idea, Bonchon owner! Switch back right now and I'll bet many, many customers will be happy and come back and more often too. Please think it over! The bimbimbap came with shaved raw carrots and a sliced cooked omelette (as well as some wilted greens and mushrooms...all interesting in that they were all bland). The radish kimchi I ordered was oddly sweet. The rice wasn't crispy on the bottom of the bowl (maybe it wasn't cooked in the "stone" bowl?). I cannot say much about the authenticity of the Korean dishes, but I feel that most people come here for the fried chicken, anyway. I'll start off by saying that the Spicy option took me by surprise -- usually I don't expect much from "spicy" options at Americanized chains such as this one, but this one definitely packs a punch (and I consider myself to have a high spice tolerance)! The Soy Garlic flavor was my favorite of the two options, and actually reminded me of the fried chicken that I had in Korea. The sticky, salty yet sweet, sauce coated the crispy skin deliciously. My only criticism is that the chicken was a bit bland in the middle as it was not marinated, but I didn't mind too much. The chicken itself wasn't dry but not especially juicy. We also ordered a plate of dumplings, which were also coated half in the Spicy and half in the Soy Garlic, but they were pretty average as they come. So I ordered through UberEats and the food was fantastic. I got the small chicken combo where they give you wings and drums with two different sauces. I think they were soy garlic and garlic sauce. I've never had fried chicken so crispy in my life. I also ordered the kimchi and pickled radish. Both of those were delicious. I almost wanted to do an ASMR video the chicken was so crispy.
