California poke bowl with ahi (tuna)
    Pam M.

I've been searching around for a good poke bowl since I was spoiled by abundant & well priced quality poke bowl options when I lived in Hawaii. I think I found it (through Yelp)! I live a few blocks away so I swung by one afternoon & ordered their California bowl over all greens. The bowl was super fresh & featured big, quality chunks of tuna, probably the largest tuna cubes that I've encountered in a poke bowl in recent months. The avocado & imitation crab went well with the ahi & the bowl filled up my stomach. I was a happy camper for the rest of the day. Very friendly guy running the food truck. Thank you fellow Yelpers for guiding me to Bonito Poke!

created my own bowl with salmon, which i was pleasantly surprised to discover was an option! generous portion of fish and crab salad and everything tasted fresh. food came out quick which was great for mid-workday pick up. the rice seemed like normal white rice rather than sushi rice, and I wish they had ponzu or a vinaigrette based dressing to choose, but overall solid meal.

The two or three days a week that this truck is here at howard and 1st street, Bonito is the best poke I have found in the city. I have tried several actual storefronts in the area and they pale in comparison. Unfortunately with that they are also easily the most expensive. They also have raised their price several times since I first started coming two years ago, and have come out with smaller packaging. Any much smaller, or more expensive, and I may have to say goodbye to my favorite truck...

Fresh fish at the Marina Greens! What a delight! The staff was incredibly friendly and helpful. The portions are HUGE! Definitely stop by this food truck and give it a try!

Cali Bowl with Tuna and Salmon (50/50) over Sushi Rice

As much as I love food trucks and how they bring needed variety to the Financial District and SoMa, there's no question that some charge a hefty price. The likes of Seoul of Taipei and Senor Sisig? So good, I'd even pay a few bucks more. Trucks like the now-shuttered Kung Fu Tacos, though? If I could still get a refund, I would. Unfortunately, for Bonito Poke, they're just another one of the many to fall into that awkward area in between... With its slate of poke bowls, Bonito Poke offers an otherwise fresh option that doesn't happen to be a salad (which is always appreciated). The menu (albeit simple) offers up some interesting and enticing choices - four signature combos with your choice of base and protein (see below), poke nachos, and a DIY option to customize your own bowl: -- Choose your BASE: Sushi Rice, Mixed Greens, Brown Rice (+$1), or Mixed Greens with White or Brown Rice (+$1) -- Choose your PROTEIN: Tuna, Scallops, Shrimp, Tako (Octopus), Half & Half, Salmon (Premium Protein +$.50) -- Pick up to five CONDIMENTS: Cilantro, Cucumber, Fresh Ginger, Jalapenos, Jicama, Mango, Red Onion, Roasted Edamame -- Pick one SAUCE: Wasabi Aioli, Bonito Aioli, Spicy Aioli, Roasted Sesame Dressing -- Pick your TOPPINGS: Green Onions, Tobiko, Fried Shallots, Nori Furikake Since their signature bowls looked better than their DIY offerings (side note: crab salad is in their combos, but not a DIY option?), I opted to go with their CALI BOWL (Cucumber, Crab Salad, Wasabi Aioli, Green Onions, Nori Furikake, and Tobiko...$12) with Salmon and Tuna over Sushi Rice. Overall, this was pretty solid, though hardly unique. On both counts, the fish was very fresh and delicious. What's more, the crab salad was pretty good (not too heavy on the mayo) and I really liked the wasabi aioli that they use. As tasty as the poke may be though, it was hard to get too excited about the experience given the price. I don't think it's fair to say the food is "overpriced" (there's no way to know the economics of a business from the consumer's side of the register), but I also don't think it's unfair to say that it's short on value for what you get. For the money, you can get more of the same or better for the same or less at other places and poke trucks (like Poke Delish). Not bad overall, just not worth the money for me.

Found them in front of the Salesforce building. Ended up being close to $13 but I wanted to splurge and the other poke places around were too far away. Great taste and lots of options. i got the Spicy tuna bonito classic. The portion was a good size. You get your choice of fish protein (Salmon tuna, etc.). This spot rotates every day so I am not sure what days they are there. If I did, I would likely put it in a rotation. Good trucks downtown are tough to keep track of given they are a spontaneous choice for lunch Never can turn down good poke though

It's been a while since I've eaten out and Bonito poke is always a treat. I'm glad to see they are now offering more than just poke. I ordered the bbq chicken. Its not your typical sweet bbq taste that you would get from L&L but more savory like adobo. The black sesame seeds are a nice touch. The Macaroni salad does not have any mayo, so it's definitely a more healthy choice. All that is over a bed of greens with sesame dressing. Complete meal. Def worth a try. Poke is always great too!

I'm honestly shocked I haven't updated this sooner because this is literally the ONLY poke I eat anymore (I am not exaggerating). The first time I had it was already pretty good but everytime after just got even BETTER! The key? Tuna, tuna, and MORE TUNA! I'm so glad my boyfriend got me to give tuna a chance because it is magical. Usually tuna is one of my least favorites - but the tuna here is just SO good! The chunks are massive and just have a wonderful texture to them. I've tried a few of the bowls and all have been tasty but my favorite would have to be the bonito bowl! I get all my bowls with salad greens as a base and I felt that the sauce for this one works best - nice and creamy! I also love the roasted edamame, it adds such a great flavor and the texture is different than regular edamame. It's pretty cheap to add toppings as well, with some as low as 25 cents so I tend to customize with each bowl. As for the size, I can definitely finish a bowl in one go, but I'm also always super full (and remember, this is with salad). I honestly find it to be a super great deal! Now for service, I wasn't able to comment the last time as a friend ordered and picked it up, but I ordered myself this time and was at awe by the amazing service! I called without realizing they weren't taking orders yet, but the person helping me on the phone was very kind and said they'd call me back at 1. I received a call literally on the dot for my order! Most places would have you call back on your own but I was really surprised that they took the extra step to call us back themselves! Bonito Poke is amazing and you 100% must give it a try!!

Cali bowl with salmon and tuna $16

Got the cali bowl with an extra scoop of fish making it tuna and salmon. The portion was enough to satisfy for sure. Everything was fresh with one exception, the Avocado was a bit on the super over ripe side. Overall the bowl was amazing with just the right portions of rice, fish, crab and sauce. The service was super fast, great for a lunch break. The other bowls look really good, I can't wait to try them all. I would come back to this truck anytime.

I'm lucky to have this as a food option that I can walk to given the circumstances the past few weeks. I enjoyed eating the Cali Bowl. Basically all the ingredients found in a California roll but layered in a poke bowl. I loved the sticky rice, imitation crab meat, avocado and the fresh, big pieces of tuna. The servings of Tuna was hella generous too.

I was really craving poke for lunch on a Friday and couldn't think of any place that I'd genuinely enjoyed thus far in SF. After doing some research, Bonito Poké seemed like a good prospect and it ended up being the beat decision I made that Friday. Coming from Hawaii, poke is something I critique especially hard. Is it previously marinated or is it unseasoned fish cubes? Luckily, bonito poke had incredibly fresh, tasty poke that caters to anyone searching for good authentic poke. I got the half shoyu-half spicy ahi traditional bowl without the cashews. I wasn't sure what to expect as first, but after receiving my bowl, I knew it would be a good eat. I could've gone with additional marination on the poke, but I asked for more shoyu and it was perfect!! Thanks bonito poke for giving me a great taste of home!!

Yet another poke outlet in San Francisco. We're seriously reaching bubble territory. Thankfully they differentiate themselves with delicious poke nachos in addition to the poke bowl permutations. Poké Nachos: I feel a bit inundated by all the rice-centric poke bowls in San Francisco, I'm glad to see some carb creativity! Crispy crunchy nachos are the perfect complement to squishy tuna cubes. The generous amount of sauces really helped add to that loaded nacho experience (albeit a bit messy on the hands, so grab a bunch of napkins). I liked the green onion and edamame toppings. Could have gone either way about the roe and apples though. Mango Pineapple Fresca: A little more juicy than an agua fresca, which is okay in my book since juice is superior to sugar water. Quite refreshing when paired with the nachos.
