As soon as we walked in everyone was friendly. We were offered to sit anywhere. The server who helped us gave recommendations as we asked about items. All dishes were good size portions. I had the Stone pot Bi bim bob. Large quality vegetables with shrimp a great recommendation. My wife truly enjoyed the Korean spicy beef soup, needing to take 3/4 of the order with us. I loved this place 7 years ago, so came back to visit. Food still tastes mostly good really. BUT... some really weird/bad things on this specific visit. some of it restaurant policies and some of it a server who seemed inexperienced. RESTAURANT OWNER: Please take the time to train your servers. I'm sure they're nice and mean well, but perhaps this review might point out some holes in the training? For diners: please read #3 and 4 especially if you want to have a better meal! 1. the waitress brought a hot plate of yakisoba noodles, but didn't warn anyone that the metal plate was searing hot. The waitress couldn't quite reach the back corner of the table, and basically, one of our adults who tried to help her by receiving the plate had his thumb burned. no broken skin, but a pretty bad blister. 2. as a result of the hot plate burning the adult guest, the plate hit the table and miso soup poured all over a six year old guest. the waitress seemed new-ish so she wasn't quite sure what to do. we had to ask the waitress for more napkins to get the soup off of the girl's shirt, pants. it was even pooled in her crocs. as one can imagine, children are not happy to have that amount of soup dumped on them. AND while we cleaned up, we actually had to call the waitress back to request a replacement miso soup. the waitress did seem flustered, but it really felt like no replacement soup would be offered otherwise. 3. the rice with every dish (except sushi) is purple pink with beans. maybe this is just me, but my personal feeling is the default bento rice should be white. this is something that should be made explicit in the menu and also by the server. when the food arrived, two of our faces fell-- as we were looking forward to white rice. i asked her if we could have had white rice, and she seemed to skirt around it and said "yep, it's that way here." i asked for white, but was told i would not get it. 4. four guests ordered a four rolls for their dinners. one for each guest. as someone else commented in an another review, each guest's order did not come in a separate plate (4 plates for 4 orders of rolls). they came randomly consolidated onto two plates. NOPE, not correct. we had to rearrange and separate the sushi onto side dishes--kinda messy and definitely awkward. i think it's reasonable to have one order per plate? big picture summary: it's kind of unbelievable that a guest can have his finger burned, soup can spill all over a young girl, and the restaurant come off as not caring. training could help here. read more

We stopped here on our way back to california but the food took long--- and on top of that, who serves 2 sushi rolls on one plate without request????? This was a negative for me as my mother in law and husband didnt sit at the same table and they are the ones who ordered the rolls. Ps. At least our server was generous. I'm a rare Door Dash customer but beware if using the service from this establishment. It appeared that they threw scraps of leftover meat--that defined gristly, sinewy--into the Bulgogi Beef order making it a nightmare of a dish. Thankfully, our dog was happy to accommodate. read more

I tried to come here for lunch by myself on a Saturday, very hungry. Don't make that mistake! I ordered a bento box because I figured it would be quickest. There's no miso soup or any kind of appetizer that comes with that order. I waited for 40 minutes and my food still wasn't ready. The Restaurant wasn't busy. I paid my bill in advance and tipped too much given what to transpire. There were people who came in after me, sat down, ordered, Got their food, ate, paid their bill and left before I was given my food. Finally, I asked for me food to go cause I couldn't stand being there anymore. The wait staff was mildly apologetic, but offered no reasonable explanation as to why I was forced to wait so long. I asked them if they were prioritizing called in orders or what, but the kitchen and the staff had nothing to say and didn't really even apologize. And it's overpriced. The food here was amazing! I came with my friend and we were seated and brought waters right away. They brought out appetizers, rolls and entrees out as they were ready, which I really like (I am a hungry gal all the time). Everyone from the waitresses to the sushi chefs were incredibly friendly (service is super important to me). We got an Alaskan roll, double double roll, and a sunset roll and they were all so pretty and delicious. We got edamame and cheese wontons for appetizers that were both really good and my friend got soup which I didn't ask about, but she devoured it so I'm assuming 10/10. (Sorry the picture is chaotic. This place is a pretty solid 2 or 3 stars. We are locals and live very close. We have given Bonsai a chance to be great a few times over the years and they just never hit the mark. Our kid was sick and just really wanted some miso soup and that's pretty hard to screw up so we just went over to Bonsai to get her some. My husband and I were hungry so we decided to go ahead and order a roll each. We waited for a bit and the nice girl at the register realized she made a mistake on our order and payment. She did fix it and she was apologetic. However there was pretty noticeable tension between the chefs and waitstaff. The sushi. Im convinced they PRE make most of the rolls and simply add the toppings and sauces to order. The roll and the toppings were two very different temps and we sat and watched them try to discreetly pull them pre-made rolls from giant fridges in the waiting area. 99% of the rolls have Kani Krab filler as it is cheap and yes filling but they're still charging nearly $20 a roll. We likely won't ever be back. There's far better options for sushi in Ashland. The girl at register was doing her best. The other staff looked like they wanted to be literally anywhere else. Driving through Ashland and stumbled on this . Pleasant servers . Ample parking. We ordered the lunch bento boxes and it was more then enough food . The chicken teriyaki was good but the beef was more like a Chinese stir fry. It was not teriyaki and the bill actually said we ordered bulgogi beef !!!. Enjoyed the two gyoso. Rice was a little dry . I've been here quite a few times for casual meals, which were satisfactory most times. However, I've gotten quite a few messed up orders. I enjoy this place enough to have taken my visiting family over the past weekend after a long drive, and needless to say, we are all so disappointed from the experience. Restaurant was packed initially, then everyone seemed to cash out at the same time. We were one of three tables left in the restaurant on a Friday night, and the only POC customers. We were told to choose a table, then a server [literally] dropped a stack of menus on our table without acknowledging any of us. She came back to take our orders: edamame, baked mussels, a chicken bento, the Mt. Ashland roll, the baked salmon roll, the TNT roll, and a steak. The steak came out long before the rest, even preceding the appetizers. It was wonderful, but the rest of the dining experience sadly outweighs the positive. Mussels were okay, a bit fishy. Chicken bento is a go-to. Nice as usual. The baked salmon roll came, but the two other rolls were nowhere to be found. These were all brought out by a different server. Our initial server asked if we were ready for boxes and the check, and we stated that we haven't even received our full order. The table next to us (seated after) received their sushi long before the two rolls we were awaiting, and we were told by another server, about 20 minutes later, that our rolls were given to them by mistake & that they're remaking the TNT roll. We did not receive the Mt. Ashland roll. The other person in our group just ended up nibbling off of everyone else's plates and we all left dissatisfied. We were not checked on at all, water was never refilled, no apology was given for the mistake. Servers were rude and unprofessional, but seemed to check on the other, whiter, tables kindly. Pretty good overall experience if you are looking for sushi that is both made in a timely manner while still being pretty tasty. They have a decent but not huge array of options to chose from when it comes to your meal, meal size, and drinks. The staff is usually pretty efficient and quite nice to interact with. There are a few downsides here though. Being a small restaurant they don't have much in the way of indoor seating and it can get rather cramped inside during the evening/early night time. I also found their spicier sushi options to be a bit underwhelming when it came to how spicy they were on their own. Good experience on the whole though. read more

Here area few bullet-points of my experience: Working in small, cramped workspace conditions, the lack of consideration for employees and their belongings, no preliminary discussion of pay, scheduling, etc., the assumption to exert oneself at a potentially exploitative pay rate while working in an already susceptible work environment at the behest of the owner--made that much worse by poor health and safety standards for employees. I was hoping this particular type of hiring practice didn't exist in such an obvious place, but it does. And it definitely hits a bit different considering the current circumstances. Delicious food, garden salad is the best salad in southern Oregon. Salmon bento is always perfectly cooked, the salmon is so good you can eat it without any teriyaki sauce. Since it has gluten you can still order and enjoy it without the sauce if you have celiac. Friendly staff. One star off because it is quite expensive for the location. The building is old, the booths are kinda gross and sitting outside is awkward with car's parking so close to your table that you get a cloud of exhaust. read more

If you say you're open 'til 9pm and I arrive at 8:45 to see the lights on and door open, I don't expect to be told you're closed. I had to drive in to town to place the order because you wouldn't answer your phone. If you have so much business you can turn customers away, good for you. It was ok. I had the miso ramen and the lava roll. The soup had a bit of a fishy taste to it so I didn't eat it and it went in the garbage disposal. (Had my order to go) The lava roll tasted fresh and had a decent flavor, but I have definitely had way better sushi and miso ramen. I just witnessed such rudeness by the younger of the 2 Asian chefs. A woman in her 50s came in with her at least 80 year old mother and she asked the chef a question and he told her, " Every time you come in you ask the same question. He said this 3 times! Then when she walked out they were talking about that customer for 5 minutes. I've been in 3 times in the last 2 weeks and it seems I witness an extreme lack of gratitude from the staff, no smiles, no hellos, no thank you's. As far as the quality to price goes this is the best place in Ashland. The food is good, the fish is pretty fresh and the portions are good. If I had anything negative to say it would be that I wish they would bump the quality of their sushi rice up a notch. But I'm a sushi connoisseur so most people probably don't notice. The atmosphere is friendly and fun. The sushi chefs throw candy to people as they enter and exit. Bring a sweater as it tends to be a little chilly inside. Update: A year later and I still think this is the best bang for your buck for sushi in Ashland! I keep coming back! Update: I keep coming back for more! I love the sushi here. That's the overwhelming positive that brings me back. The negatives are I find the inside dinning room cramped and the booths uncomfortable. In drastic need of a renovation with the "bar" seats unusable because they use that space for storage (making for a strange and cluttered ambiance). I also discourages single patrons. I do also find it frustrating that they stop taking orders 30 mins before closing. If the restaurant is open, they should serve you, if you want it to close 30 mins sooner, just post the new time instead of turning people away when they are clearly there well before closing. read more
