Knowing that, the price is perfect for wonderful sushi and great service. The staff are friendly, and although they're sometimes slow they make up for it with enthusiasm. The place is a little small but its quaint. Do yourself a favor and sit at the sushi bar if you can. Its an experience and the head chef is super friendly. It's really just around the corner from the performance venues and a great spot to have lunch before or after a performance. Way in the way is a more private setting for those looking for a more personal/romantic setting. Their sushi is great, if that's what you're craving. I do recommend that no matter what you get You start off with an avocado salad. It's thinly sliced haas avocado on a bed of field greens with a delicious miso dressing. Yes, they have teriyaki chicken, beef, or salmon. They also have a very good Mongolian beef dish, and they make a Mongolian Chicken version of it. Mongolian Chicken may not be as good, but it's probably healthier and it tasted great. The service is also worth mentioning. They're all smiles here. I recently visited this spot in Ashland, Oregon. The service was great, friendly and attentive throughout my meal. The restaurant was clean and spacious. The food, however, was a bit hit-or-miss. I started with the fried pot stickers, which were pretty good. I also tried the Crazy Tiger roll and the pork ramen; both were just okay and didn't really stand out. For dessert, I went with the banana tempura, which unfortunately was a disappointment. It lacked flavor and overall just didn't taste good. Tasty food but minimal portions and slightly expensive! I enjoyed my Spicy Tonkotsu ramen (it was $1 extra to make it spicy). The broth was creamy, savory, and delicious. I was able to clear the entire bowl, broth and all. I do feel like it was a bit expensive for what it was and I wasn't too full by the end. Tried a bite of the Japanese curry as well; tasty but nothing in particularly special. Again, not the biggest portion for the price. Our waiter was so so nice and enthusiastic while serving us. It was my last night in Ashland and I wanted to try something new. Some of my friends had eaten here last year, so I thought I'd give it a try. The place is larger than it looks, and I was given a nice table toward the back. I ordered an eel roll, the chicken katsu appetizer (no karaage), and a tonkatsu ramen. The eel roll was really good! The ramen had a really good broth, and I dunked my katsu in it which is what I do with karaage. I also ordered a nice cold Sapporo to wash everything down. The broth for the tenkatsu ramen is really good and the noodles were on point. I think the bowl could use some more pork-- I only had two small slices. The other toppings were fine. The egg and bamboo shoots are good. And although using corn and arugula isn't my favorite it did seem to work. We also had a katsu which was what I expect--good but a little dry. Sushi in Ashland? Some might pass based on location, however... don't. Aside from how wonderful this quaint town is, the sushi at Umami is unsurpassed. It was through Yelp that we stumbled onto this small and intimate sushi gem, though don't be fooled, it is much bigger than you would expect. It turns out that I had been here approximately 5 years ago, but due to change in name and ownership, I was unaware until we walked in and I was so happy to have returned. The stars were in alignment. Starting with the staff ~ amazing. 5 Stars in their own right. Our sushi chef Darmanto, assisted by Boon (owner) and Herman took amazing care of us. We were served by Rochana, who was attentive and delightful. Superb Service by all. Yes, roll selections are abundant and they are delicious. In particular we tried the Volcano Roll (fried) and the Kiss of Fire (a california roll topped with fresh mango and salmon w/ spicy mayo in foil and then lit on fire)... not on menu and I'm not certain that is the name... just ask and they will know. It is amazing. I'm more of a fresh sushi person, rolls are just a plus towards the end. If you are going out for sushi, do yourself a favor and pay a few more dollars and get the belly of EVERYTHING. This is also known as Toro. Salmon Belly.... lightly torched for an added flavor and depth... do not miss this. Blue Fin Tuna Belly... OMG. It is like a delicate slice of Kerrygold butter is simply sitting on your tongue, melting and full of delicate flavor. Boon convinced us to try the Wagyu Beef sushi... he gave us all the details and even showed us the certificate of authenticity for our assurance... if they have this... you must. It doesn't feel like you are eating meat. It is delicate, flavorful, and so buttery... perfection. Lets just say that this guy could have sold me a Tesla without a battery.. I would have bought it. His enthusiasm and knowledge are wonderful and right up my alley. Scallops... amazing. Downfall... no Uni. Perhaps it isn't popular enough in Ashland and therefor not worth it for the chef to purchase it, but in all honesty, this is how I end my sushi... every time... except this one. Over the last Year and a half i have come to find that a dozen dishes I used to enjoy here are different now, curry rice is the most whack shit ive ever seen. Did they fire all the Japanese people? I used to love the sushi, the curry rice, the pad Thai, the ramen, the katsu, and more but ive been ordering them all and haven't been able To finish a single meal here recently. They literally gave me no rice in a curry rice that was like brown mud water, definitely not the thickness that is supposed to be. Maybe they thought no one would know the difference cus they haven't spent time around japanese cuisine. The pad Thai tasted like it had more sugar than anything else on it. Where do we start?! We just moved here from the SF Bay Area which has amazing sushi and was looking for a great Southern Oregon sushi spot. We came here and won't need to go anywhere else. Sofia was super sweet and attentive to us throughout our entire meal. The sushi was phenomenal. The super white tuna was so buttery. We also had the agi-dashi tofu. Make sure you request the ponzu sauce cause it was so good we ate the cabbage that came with the tofu by dipping it in the sauce lol. We got the Mount Ashland which had the cutest presentation.
