We have loved Matsukaze for 3 generations. As a single mom, I started taking my young son there. We both loved it so much we were going there multiple times a month as it was our favorite restaurant. My son always wanted to go there and so did I, so it worked out. Plus they used to have an early bird special on Tuesdays. A little less food for a small price. When my now husband of 30 years asked me out, he asked where I wanted to eat. Matsukaze of course. He had never been. It quickly turned into his favorite also. One and half years later he proposed there. Our grandson now claims it as his favorite restaurant also. Even though we live in Medford and my son has passed away, I go over (hubby gets to join us sometimes also) and take my teenage grandson out to Matsukaze. The food is always great no matter what you order. I have to say the combination dinner of Beef Teriyaki and Tempura is my favorite. For us Matsukazu is worth the drive to Grants Pass and no other restaurant in the Rogue Valley beats it. Their teriyaki sauce is the best. We buy a few bottles of it whenever we eat there. If we run out we grab some at Cartwrights. We do blind test tastes with multiple teriyaki sauces. Hands down Matsukaze teriyaki is the best. It isn't as salty, it is sweeter. This is great food. I don't like fatty meat or ribs. The meat was not overly fatty on the ribs. So good. We had salted cabbage a Hawaii treat and mahi mahi was made succulent and salted Hawaiian style. The kimchi was spiced well bit the heat was a moment and just added to the dining experience. Tea fresh with leaves and good flavor. Sat on floor table so do go and try the whole experience. Staff was attentive nice and helpful. I like the feel of this restaurant. Great servers, too! Food is good. My only complaint is they undercook some of their items. I think the beef teriyaki would be better cooked a bit more as it's a little chewy and the fat would be less noticeable if it was caramelized a bit. Just my preference though. Their miso soup is the best in town! Also the shrimp my partner had was so undercooked that it was oozy inside. I don't eat shrimp but he said it was not very good at all. Visiting Oregon the last month on the Rogue River and craving sushi/Japanese food. Driving through Grants Pass and fell across this restaurant and what a surprise. Not impressive on the outside but plenty of cars. Sign inside says in business 38 years. Two big rooms and before we left it was full with plenty of customers picking up to-go orders. We had a very attentive server along with the friendly manager-owner. My husband got the crispy fried Mahi-Mahi which was excellent and I got Tempura Vegetables (the best I've ever had) along with Ebi, a shrimp, avacado, cucumber roll that was delicious. Also their Miso soup is different from what I'm used to but so good. Being from Arizona we'll probably never make it back again but wish we could take it home with us. I'm sorry to say I was disappointed with my experience at Matsukaze, Aug 3. We went there for dinner. We asked when we arrived if we were arriving too close to closing (about an hour & 15 minutes later). They said it would be no problem. It didn't take too long to be seated, but they mentioned they were out of clean water glasses so water would be brought to the table when that was resolved. We decided on what we wanted, put in our order, and waited. And waited. Nearly 30 minutes after we placed our order the server came to tell us they were out of chicken katsu, and we would need to choose something else. Menus came out and we made other choices. Again we waited. Once the food arrived it was excellent, but by that time it was past closing, and frankly we were just tired. We finished our meal around 9PM. Quick summary: The food was good, but if you want chicken katsu go earlier in the day, and be sure to bring your patience. read more

Wow! Our entire family was blown away by the safe, fast and friendly service here. The food was hot and fresh and delivered to our table within the first 10 minutes we arrived. We ordered a variety of items; Inari and gyoza for starters (the inari was especially good!) and then miso soups, and chicken teriyaki dinners. We also ordered a California roll and fresh salad with the house vinaigrette. The sushi was fresh, the teriyaki (with their famous sauce) was the best we've ever had! This was the first restaurant that I ate Japanese food at back in 1984. Been hooked ever since. Even when I moved away a home visit wasn't complete until I had it. My go to used to be the spicy bbq chicken but lately it isn't as flavorful and it's kinda dry. Now the spicy bbq beef is my fave. Their miso soup is some of the best I've had. Theirs is the only one I've had that gives you cabbage to put in it, and it's soooo good. Chicken katsu is ordered often in our household. The tempura is nice and light. The snapper nitsuke style is also one of my faves if I want fish. Kalbi ribs can be a hit or miss; sometimes they are too chewy, although I've found that happens sometimes at other Japanese I frequent. Their rolls are tight and yummy. I can actually say I've never had anything bad here and that's over 30+ years of dining. Service is exceptional. You can tell everyone that works there cares about doing a good job. read more

Still a wonderful spot that I've been going to since 1999. Even over the many times I've moved away & visited, moved back, left & came back - the food is just the same as it was 2 decades ago. Of course, as with everything - the prices have sky-rocketed over the past 1-2 years, but you still get a large portion of the main protein, a side salad, a small bowl of miso soup & a cup of delicious Japanese rice. I tend to ask for extra rice or a larger salad because I'm not a fan of miso soup & they happily sub it out at no extra cost. Only a few times have I been disappointed in the quality or preparation of my food - but it's never been inedible or to the point where it deters me from craving it within a couple of weeks! The service is always on point & I always take leftovers home. If you consider what you pay for a diner burger & fries these days, this place is actually a steal. The owner is always so kind & reserved. They keep the seating & tables up to par - like they don't let the dining rooms & ambiance noticeably wear & tear. I've been coming to this restaurant whenever I'm in the area for the past 15+ years. This is not your average PNW teriyaki place with overly sweet sauce poured over huge quantities of meat. Quality is premium here and it's shown in the exquisite presentation of each dish. While the menu is Japanese, the flavors are an homage to the blend of cultures only found in Hawaii. Salads are made special by the house made dressings and tempura is light, not grease-laden. Bring a group so that you can try a few different dishes. This place caters to someone just not their dine in customers. We are on vacation in Grants Pass to visit family. We made the choice to go here because of all of your reviews and the praises from the hotel staff where we are staying. My Yelp community hasn't let me down so we didn't think we could go wrong... We arrive and for 30 minutes we watched many huge take out orders making their way out the door. We were seated quickly. They seemed nice enough. We got water, placed our order, and the wait began. The miso soup came which was almost warm at best and was overly salty, as were the very few shreds of cabbage they served on the side instead of the usual cucumber salad. The beer he ordered and the boba coconut drink I ordered never show up after 30 minutes nor did our salad or dinner. The waitress never passed our table again either. She was milling doing nothing around the cash register most of the time we waited. We got tired of waiting and being ignored. I asked the cashier if we owed them anything for just miso, she acted like a manager to the wait staff but couldn't answer me. She said something about how maybe she could comp our miso but she had to get the manager. I decided I wasn't going to wait any longer for a manager. Seriously, we really didn't eat/ drink the miso anyway so we walked out. In my opinion it was rude of them to make us wait any longer for any reason. After waiting 30 minutes for that beer we never got. Not how I would do thing but my husband wasn't feeling well and I wasn't in the mood to wait another 30 minutes for the answer to the miso question. I guess they only take care of locals. And don't believe in sales in house and making a in house customer happy. I go out to dinner with my 12-year old daughter and she writes the review. The miso soup was delightful, It had a pleasant amount of tofu that was cooked enough to be soft, but not soggy. The only complaint I have is that there was a bit to much green onion for my taste. Overall I quite enjoyed it. I had the combination steak teriyaki and tempura. The rice was good, it was slightly dryer then I like, but I suppose I like it a bit sticky-er then most. The beef was delectable, it was cooked well but not overdone. The tempura was good, the breading was a little bland, but still yummy. As a whole I enjoyed the meal. I did not notice the service so I guess it was good because they met my needs. Picture speaks for itself. $14.75 for diced up dry chicken with some rice, exactly like something you would find at your local teriyaki stop for $7.00. We were traveling down the I-5 corridor and made a stop in Grants Pass for the night. Yelp led us to this fine restaurant within walking distance from our hotel. We are both watching what we eat (always a challenge while traveling) and were pleased to see that in addition to undoubtedly wonderful crispy panko or tempura offerings, the also had grilled protien offerings. Even better they had a section on their menu with light dinners which come with slightly smaller sides. Great to see. My wife had the teriyaki beef and I had the spicy BBQ chicken. The teriyaki beef was thinly sliced and grilled perfectly and was served with a flavorful sauce. My spicy chicken was grilled and roughly chopped and served with a small dish of sauce. I can't say that it was really very spicy in terms of heat, but the sauce was very flavorful. Both of our meals came with an option for miso soup or a salad, and were served with a bowl of steamed rice. We were greeted by one of the owners who seated us instantly and were served by a very pleasant waitress. All-in-all a great place to eat if you are visiting Grants Pass as we were, or if you live there. read more
