We walked into Bonta as an after-dinner treat, but I didn't know how much we would be treated. It's not often that you're invited to sample one flavor after another without eye-rolling or exasperated expressions, but each of the friendly staff encouraged all 4 of us to try flavors until we found the right one. No pressure. The lemon was deliciously refreshing, the coconut lime was a subtle sweet-citrus blend, but I landed on the creamy coconut chocolate. The others in my family enjoyed lemon, salted caramel and rootbeer (the only non-vegan out of the ones we tried). The small size was plenty. If we weren't already full from dinner, we probably would have added some of the toppings. Sadly, we won't be able to come back since we aren't local, but I highly recommend Bonta to anyone who's got even a tiny bit of a sweet tooth. read more

One of the best gelato stores I have found! It's located in downtown Bend in the corner of the brick building. Parking is kind of hard, so we parked inside the next building where they had 3 hour free customer parking. You won't get disappointed!! Very creamy and delicious! You can taste the natural and high quality ingredients in them. This is a business which truly cares and have a pride for what they serve. I had roasted strawberry & honey and Oregon hazel nut, half and half in a kid size. Strawberry flavor was amazing. We also had salted chocolate and root beer. They were all superb. This is the only icecream store I experienced which offers sampling in a real stainless spoon rather than a disposable wooden one. On the wall, there are photos of the farmers who actually produce the hazelnut, strawberry and etc.. I thought that was cool. $4 for a kid size. You can have up to 2 flavors for a kid size. Bonta does a really nice job. Their gelato is of high quality, generally friendly service, and fun flavors. When you've been to Italy (and even in St Maarten - not sure how theirs was better, I mean, it was owned by Italians, but still - the Caribbean?) it's hard to beat that. Maybe in Europe their products just travel such shorter distances... and maybe they don't use as many chemicals on their soils. Whatever it is, the gelato in above stated places was better. Small, cute shop just off Bond Street in downtown. Nice selection of flavors, nothing too crazy original. Small cup goes for $4.50. A pint goes for $7.50. So Good! Each time we come, here the gelato is top notch, the service is quick and friendly, and the place is busy. We love their stands flavors and their seasonal flavors, too. Prices are fair and the gelato is clean, ingredient wise. Many vegan flavors, and when asked for a G/F come they wash their hands before changing to the G/F option, keeping everything separate. I tried the seasonal pumpkin, pistachio lemon, raspberry, chocolate I believe it was, oregon hazelnut, strawberry if I remember right, and another flavor I can't seem to remember... but all I want to say is every single flavor was just so damn good! Flavors aside, the texture of the gelato was delightful and sinful at the same time. It was decadent yet refreshing, something you really need to come and try when you are in town. When these incredibly beautifully balanced flavors hit your tongue, you will become a convert and, perhaps, an addict to having these gorgeous temptations dance as little angels on your tongue, again and again, as they linger long after you are done on your tastebuds. Personally, I am familiar with and used to a different gellato consistency--having experienced the real Italian ones which are a bit softer and less dense. We tried the vanilla bourbon pecan but opted for a small of the stracciatella & salted vanilla. We were in Bend for the night, and we were staying right next door at The Oxford Hotel. We spotted this little shop as we walked around downtown. It was a sunday evening, so mostly everything was closed. I was so glad to see Bonta was open until 9! All the employees were super friendly, helpful, and quick. My husband and I both picked 2 flavors in the smaller sized cups. I wish I would have seen the waffle cones sooner, next time I would for sure get my gelato in a cone. I had the peanut butter/chocolate and the dulce de leche sea salt. My husband had pistachio and stracciatella. We ate our weight in Gelato in Italy, and this stuff is just as legit. Bonta is great and I like that they always offer s few plant based options. They also have several great toppings available to such as gourmet nut butters and glazed nuts.
