The food was amazing because it was fresh and tasted like it was home made. I got the lamb wrap and you could tell that they cooked the lamb to perfection because of how soft it was. The service was kind but they were understaffed at lunch and it took 30 mins for the food to be ready , but when you're having a great chat with friends and a beautiful upstairs view of the city (yes thats right they have seating upstairs!) it wasn't bad. I know absolutely nothing about kombucha. I know it's one of those fermented drinks that attracts its share of obsessives. I only found out after the fact that the Karabiyik brothers, who own this compact cafe, started a kombucha brewery and discovered the value of food pairings in selling their product. Their Harrison Street location is definitely off any path I follow in SoMa, but I thought it would be worth the detour to try some enticing comfort food. Gratefully I was right. The menu is full of Turkish temptations starting with appetizers like an eggless shakshuka and a meze plate as well as various burgers and wraps including a vegan version with lentil miso. My palate was drawn to the $26 Lamb Kebab Plate (Photo 9). A bit pricey but a definite winner with a generous serving of tandoori-style pulled lamb mixed with tomato sauce and roasted red pepper and layered over finely diced pita. Bulgur pilaf, yogurt, and seasoned chickpeas were served on the side. The flavor combinations really worked well together, and there was plenty for a second meal takeout. Even though I only noticed later in my photo that they offer their own kombucha, I just went with a refreshing $3 can of Strawberry Sparkling Water (Photo 8). As it was my first time visiting, I thought seating was limited, but I noticed diners coming out of the back. Good to know for the next visit. What a truly special place! As soon as I began to plan a trip to the Bay Area, I knew I had to check out Boochmania, which seems to be the only kombucha taproom in the entire region. This place is doing a lot in a small space! They brew their own kombucha and have a fairly extensive menu of Levantine cuisine with an emphasis on fermented foods such as a fermented hummus. They also have other fascinating ferments such as chicha morada (a fermented purple corn beverage). They are a family-run business that moved from Berkeley to San Francisco after the pandemic. Due to limited time in the area, I didn't have the chance to have a meal here but needed to try their kombucha. They are generous with the samples, so my friends and I tried everything and then sat down for some flights of kombucha. The flights are served in enormous glasses which we appreciated! We also really enjoyed the complimentary mixed nuts. What hospitality. Overall, the kombucha skews very mild in flavor. The boldest one was the currant clove, which was sweet and tasty. The rose and lavender and rose ones also had pleasant flavor. A lot of others such as the ginger sage were extremely mild. They are all very low in sugar and calories. This is the cutest little cafe and lunch spot. The location is a bit random but trust me it's worth visiting. Excellent quality and flavor with attention to detail. The ambiance is warm and charming and timeless. I got a whole milk latte that was served with little cookies. I also got a quinoa bowl and added chicken. The name comes from their specialty making kombucha. I tried the unicorn tail which was light and refreshing and a beautiful luminous blue color from the Spirulina in it. I have some mixed feelings about writing this review because, on the one hand, I think Boochmania deserves all the hype, attention, love, and support but, on the other hand, the more popular it is, the more people I have to compete with for the delicious food and amazing service. But, alas, I would hate to see this place close earlier than it should and the un-Boochmania'ed, if you will, need the enlightenment, so I'm here to share my glowing review. Firstly, the ambiance of Boochmania is not something you'd expect to find in SF, let alone this rather sparse area of Yerba Buena. It's cozy and warm and charming. It feels almost like an escape from everything that's going on outside, a little oasis in the city. Secondly, the food. The food. It's like eating a mother's cooking but with a fun, fermented twist. Mezze Plate ($12): delicious medley of dips with several pieces of puffy pita bread! This was so delicious and nourishing. I loved every single dip but the fermented hummus and yogurt take my top spots for sure. Let me also say that I love it when a restaurant gives an EVEN number of bread. Like what the heck is a party of two going to do with an odd number of bread, fight to the death before the entrees come out??!? Bulgur Bowl ($16): a really good portion of bulgur and beautiful pan-fried vegetables. I personally prefer other grains over bulgur, but I still enjoyed this, and the vegetables really shined here. Quite literally, because it was golden hour and the sun was streaming in through the front window and the vegetables were vibrant and glimmering in a thin layer of oil. They were cooked just enough so that they still had a bit of snap and were perfectly salted. The blueberry dressing was beautiful and paired really well with the rest of the dish! No picture because we dug in without snapping a pic first :) Sliders + veggie side ($18 + $4): bomb dot com! Love that they have this on the menu so that you can try the vegan and meat burger option! Overall, I prefered the lamb slider a bit more. I really enjoyed the flavor of the lentil miso one, but the patty was a bit soft which didn't make for a ton of structural integrity. I'd still order the lentil one again, though! As for the lamb.. it was definitely some of the best I've had! Perfectly tender and rich. Slap on some onions, sauce and put it between a beautiful brioche bun and you're in for a great time. Again, the vegetables were amazing. But the pickles!!! Best pickles I've ever had!!! Mosaic Cake ($3.50): visually stunning but not my personal favorite dessert. It's like a really chewy and dense brownie with mix-ins. If that's your jam, this will be your jam. Kombucha ($5): delicious, light and refreshing. And fun flavors! I've gotten to sample them all -- shout out to the kind and generous staff -- and my standouts are Ginger Sage, Unicorn Tail and Persimmon Rose. Finally, let's talk about the service. This is Tokyo-level service y'all. They were so kind and patient while my friend and I tried all of their kombucha flavors. They surprised me at the beginning of the meal with complimentary fermented hummus and pita bread. They surpised me at the end of the meal with turkish coffee and the best turkish delights I've ever had (lots of bests here folks). Each one of the staff just gives off good vibes all around. It's like eating a mother's cooking in her family's inviting home. --- Well. This has been quite the lengthy review, so let me sum up some action items. Go support and enjoy Boochmania. Try the fermented hummus, yogurt, puffy pita bread, vegetables, burger of your choice/sliders if you can't choose, pickles, and kombucha. Ok, so basically anything on the menu. Lentil Miso Burger Slider: A little mushy as far as burgers go. Like when you bite into the sandwich, the patty kinda splats to the sides. Pasty, but tasty. Might be better in a wrap form where it has fewer options to escape. Pulled Meat Burger Slider: Delicious lamb. Slow cooked tender, but also firm from maybe a quick sear. If I had known it'd be this good, I would have got the full sandwich. Smashed Potatoes: Not smashed really, more like quartered small potatoes that are baked with lots of herbs. Tasty, especially dipped in the yogurt sauce. Homemade Dip: This was fermented fennel that reminded me a lot of muhammara since it was red and I saw little walnut bits. Tasted great spooned on to the fresh baked crescent roll. Definitely motivation to try more of their dips. Pickles: A little sweet, which I don't usually like, but it was fine here since it tasted a little fermented too. Great to cleanse the palate between lamb bites. Currant Clove Kombucha: I'm not normally a kombucha fan, but I liked this. Had a subtle sweetness that was enhanced by the spices. Didn't taste too funky nor too sour. A hidden and nice little tiny cafe tucked in Soma SF near harrison and 3rd. I liked that they have so many vegetarian food options. We had lentil miso wrap and a platter. I tried it on a lunch date with a girl friend so those 2 dishes were enough for us. Their latte was also good. During lunch hours it wasnt crowded for a sit down meal. Many working professionals people came in for to go lunch. The cafe is very much suitable for a lazy afternoon reading with books and music. Made us feel at home, super welcoming environment and an amazing sunny little space :) We had the complimentary bread, the Shakshuka, Bulgur Bowl, and Lentil Miso Burger with a 12 oz of the Unicorn Tail kombucha. Everything was delicious -- I especially loved the combo of the shakshuka veggies with the bulgur and veggies in that bowl, flavor explosion. Unicorn Tail kombucha was also amazing. I've had Boochman Kombucha at the farmers market and have tried many flavors (the lavender and currant ones are also favorites of mine), but the Unicorn Tail flavor really takes the cake. They both took time to talk to us about the food and tell us how it was made and cooked! Their menu is brand new and we were the first to order the Lamb bowl. It was INCREDIBLE. Every bite felt nourishing and tasted delicious. The lamb was perfectly tender, and the bulgur was so flavorful. They serve it with an in-house cultured yogurt that was so thick and creamy, unlike anything I've ever had (you don't know what you're missing until you try it!). We also ordered the Mezze Plate which was a must try! Every appetizer on it was so extraordinary.
