I stopped in recently for a few packets of Pokémon cards and while I enjoyed my experience at the store over all , I found the pushy sales pitch to join the membership progrum to be off putting . When I declined , I was questioned in an almost hostile tone as to why I would not be joining . I will likely shop elsewhere . read more

I don't know....... I really had a hard time giving it 4 stars so I decided on 3. If there was a 3 1/2 stars button that's what I would give it. I went in to sell them a couple perfect condition hard back car books that list for 39.99 each at the big book stores. When I got there at 11am the "buy back" area didn't open until noon. Ok, so I took that time to really look around and see what they offer. They offer a little bit of everything so it's worth going in to take a look. And from what I could tell most of the books are new (there are used books, dvd's and stuff here and there). When noon came I went up to the buy back counter, showed my drivers license and gave them my cell phone number and was told they would send me a message when my offer was ready. I was the only one there so my text message came in just minutes. Sadly it was only about 70 cents per book. The guy was nice and explained that they only give 60-90 cents per hard back book in perfect condition. Hmmmmmmm, I declined and will give these books away to some car buddies who will enjoy them! The store was nice and clean with 3 workers walking around organizing shelfs but not once did any of them ask if I need help. Plus there was one peson working the coffee shop. I didn't get anything from the coffee shop so I can't comment about that part. However there were no seats in the store to look at books (other then the coffee shop seats). read more

This was my first time at a Books A Million. I expected something along the lines of Joseph Beth's but it was more like a Hastings. At first glance the store appears organized however it was hard to find the books I was looking for. They were separated by categories but that's really the only organization I noticed. They did not seem to be in alphabetical order. I noticed a lot of the books appeared used (they do buy and sell used) yet the stores price tag reflected the original price on the book itself. They did not have anywhere to sit and relax other than the coffee shop (Joe Muggs) area. I did get a frappe and it was delicious. read more

I don't like to write reviews of places where I don't have good things to say. I feel like I'm bashing hard working people. However, today my experience at Books A Million should be noted. It's time to unpack my adjectives. I have never had good customer service at Books A Million; they often have a magazine or book that I couldn't find somewhere else so I'll stop in there from time to time and frequently go there when I'm between dinner and a movie at the Village 8 nearby. I'd use the German word, "fremdschämen" which means to feel shame for someone else that doesn't even realize they've embarrassed themselves. And yes, I've worked retail (and still do) and in all the jobs I've had making $6 an hour to six figures a year I've learned the simple truth that no one wants to hear someone complain about their job (or clients!) while you're discharging your duties or representing your company. There was an employee telling a story, at the top of lungs, about how the people who shop at Books A Million are rude and stupid, how the management who promoted him are also stupid, and gave some specific examples of his lack of professionalism while using an impressive collection of obscene words. I spent my formative years with a sailor; I have heard a great deal. This guy was impressive in his ability to be crude. I actually needed help finding what I was looking for but didn't ask because after hearing his description of the people who shop there - including that someone shopping in the store at the moment looked like Charles Manson - that I didn't need to add myself to his repertoire. I have been looking for, and found, the magazine I bought for weeks and I only bought it so I could send in the survey. I was horrified at what was going on. One person was working, the rest were standing around being regaled with tales of retail badassery. You can buy books online. You can go to a local shop. You can even go to the other corporate chain. I've never had an experience like this in my life. I don't want to post a negative review but they don't think highly of you at this story. Go somewhere else. read more

A few weeks ago my friend Christopher told me BAM has a Marauders Map scarf that he thought I might like. I hadn't been there in years since my son used to play on Pokemon game nights. I purchased the scarf as well as a membership. The membership includes: 10% off your total purchase, a coupon for $5 off you're next purchase, and an emailing with 10 ish coupons. The membership cane in handy as I've recently become obsessed with collecting Funko Pops. It turns out, BAM has a huge selection. I bought an embarrassing amount of these little guys and saved quite a bit with the 10% membership and coupons combined. I noticed they had a large collection of manga as well. Books a million is conveniently located off of Breckenridge lane, and is easily accessible. That being said, the books in this store sometimes are not easy to find. Although it is a mostly well stocked store, you do have to really search for specific books. The children's section and toy sections are usually very clean and maintained. I find this section, as well as the front of the store that features new releases- to be the easiest to find things. In my opinion, this is a good bookstore, but with a few minor problems. I prefer smaller bookstores, but this one definitely has everything. read more

"Picture pages, picture pages, lots of fun with picture pages!" Oh, Mortimer Marker, look at what destruction you have wrought. Because of years of watching Bill Cosby, Levar Burton and Reading Rainbow, and all those kid's programs promoting reading, I now have an addiction to books with actual pages. The feel of paper at my fingertips, the scritch as the pages rub together as I flip them.The smell of soy ink. I will forever be attached to pulped wood. Books upon books, newspapers, magazines and lots of them, keep 'em coming. There's nothing special about Books-A-Million in this regard. BAM's a bookstore, and the closest one to my current address. But since the neighborhood crackhouse isn't selling books, this is where I go. And I go as often as I can, with the kids along sometimes too. Because that's what I do, and when my boys pop open a book when they're in their teens, I want them to be able to say their habit started because of their dad. This plain, big box book store has enough going for it to give it positive review. Good: Volume--it is a large store and maximizes its space well to pack in a lot of wordy merchandise. It is clean, neat, and well organized. And, of course, a coffee shop is built right in. Bad: Plain Jane--it's a boring place... feels like a library. Yeah, I know... it's a bunch of books and it should feel like a library. But there are many other competitors, both chains and local joints, that provide a cozy atmosphere that is lacking a B-A-M. This place is full of nothing but 90 degree angles and drab colors. While I am glad they have a coffee shop, it is awkwardly crammed in a space by the front door that I suspect could be drafty in the winter. Looking for something specific? Stop here. Sign outside says coverings required...after entering the store I counted 6 people not wearing coverings, which is fine it's a personal choice, but don't require it on your door and then not enforce it. Four employees were working while I was there but no one asked their customers in regards to wearing a mask. My wife and I visited the local Barnes and Noble before going to BAM and they also are requiring face coverings. As a matter of fact an older gentleman was not wearing his and an employee enforced their policy and the gentleman complied. I will shop where I feel safe. read more

The selection is pretty decent and the prices are reasonable. It takes a bit of scouring to find what you're looking for sometimes and I don't think I have ever seen a salesperson wandering the floor. However, the staff is friendly and helpful at the check out counter. read more

I want so badly to not give books-a-million a bad review but my experiences there have never been great. Let me start with this, book-a-million offers an extremely wide variety of books. I especially like that they have a ton of used books so it can help save you some money if you not picky about it being used. Also the store is very clean and organized. So the not so good, although I didn't need assistance I walked by several associates and not one greeted me or asked me if I needed help. I got to the register and the girl was nice until I declined her request to sign up for a membership. She was super pushy about it. After that there was an item that I wanted to take off before completing my transaction and my goodness you would have thought the world was ending. She was so dramatic about it and tapped the counter as the slow system processed the cancelation. I was so uncomfortable. After that she gave me some pitch about getting free magazines for coming in. Once again I declined the request and she was not happy about that either. I honestly do not think I will come back which is a shame because I love books, but I do not want to be scrutinized by the checkout crew. read more

After reading the complaints about "nowhere to sit and relax" and that the drink bar isn't consistent with quality. Hello Folks, this is a store where you purchase books and go home to read and relax. I think people who sit around and read the books, making them used with bent pages, etc. are the very ones who cause lovely book stores to close their doors. If you aren't happy with the atmosphere there is always the library where you can read what you want and sit all day if you so choose. Anyway, this store is ok on a scale of 1-10 I'd give it a 6, it has books - check, it has pre-owned books for sale - check it is large - check. I do agree that it can be difficult to find authors or sections, but for what it is, a book store, it is ok. Hopefully, like the resurgence of vinyl records, real books will flourish once again. read more

Decent selection for fiction and magazines. They have a large kids section with books and games. On a Tuesday afternoon it was not busy, so there was no getting in people's way, which is always pleasant. My complaint with this bookstore is its lack of poetry selection. It's not uncommon to find a meager amount of poetry books on a store shelf, however when there's almost nothing contemporary, and the bulk of it is Homer, Dickinson, and Eliot, it begs for help. Another disappointment I encountered was the lack of diversity in the philosophy and religion section. Several rows of Christian books and Bibles, maybe one shelf of other religions. I did not find anything on humanism, atheism, or speculative religion. It makes me wonder if the owners are a Christian-affiliated. Fine, but still, offer a healthy variety. The store was a bit disorganized as well. Books stacked on tables just made my head feel overwhelmed. Left without buying anything, and I will shop at Carmichael's from now on. Maybe B&N too--I even like them better than this Books-a-Million. read more

Book stores always make me happy, and I have yet to go into a bookstore that has disappointed me. Books-A-Million (or as I called, Books-A-Plenty), operates the way you think a bookstore would. There is a small coffee shop right inside the door, there's the gifty section over to one side, Funko Pop figures, puzzles and games in the back and books, books, books. I was able to easily navigate their layout to look for the specific sections I wanted and could easily ignore the romance novels. Their displays in the middle of the rows contained a lot of Beauty and the Beast stuff as the movie was being released the next week. Went in the other day, it had been quite a while since I visited. Decided to pick up a used book for 6 bucks. Stood in line behind three others to check out. They have about a four minute sales pitch at the register. Would you like to join the club, would you like to donate to the charity we support. How about a free magazine subscription. I had to listen to the same pitch over the next 15 mins in line. Books a million, just focus on selling your books. Takes too long to get out of there with all the stuff they push at the register. The group working that day wasn't particularly friendly or helpful. Not sure how they are still around. Barnes and Nobel on Hurstbourne lane is far superior and if you have time to go there, you'll be happier you did. read more

I want to like this store. After all the "million" in their name is accurate--they have lots of books to choose from. I'll grant them that--great selection! However, I hate going there. Today's experience sent me over the edge and led me to write a review. Before we entered the store, we noticed some odd-looking people in maroon shirts hanging outside, right by one of the two entrance doors. I detoured and entered the other door. The whole store was filled with the maroon people. I told myself that a tour bus group decided to buy books, and I headed to the YA section. Some guy came really close to me, forcing me to move three feet to my left. So I browsed the books there, on the next shelf. Then he repeated the procedure, mumbling "excuse me" while reaching all the way past me for a sticker on the shelf. This time, I did not budge, which forced him to be really up in my space. He was all smiley and unconcerned about the fact that he was still violating my personal space. After that, I made a beeline for my dad and told him we had to leave. On the ride home, he shared his theory that BAM had hired an outside group to come in and do inventory. That made sense. Of course, they should have done it over night, when the store is closed. How flaky can you be to not consider how upsetting that will be to your loyal customers? In a general sense, today's incident aside, I still hate shopping there. Every time I go through the checkout, they ask me if I'm a member. I'm not a member. They give me the same spiel about the perks of membership while I stand there silently, waiting for them to finish. "...And you'll be elected Pope if the current pontiff dies, while also saving 10% on almost everything. Are you interested?" "No," I always say, and the transaction finally progresses. Heaven help me, though; I usually get stuck behind someone that is interested, and then there's no momentum in the line for ten or fifteen minutes. Then they try the magazine scam with me. Other times, there's no one working at the cash registers. So I stand there like an idiot until someone sees me and instructs me to check out at the cafe. At that point, I abandon my merchandise and leave. Further, the ladies' room has some issues. When the door is opened because someone is entering or leaving the area, you can see right into the stalls. No privacy whatsoever, unless no one comes or goes while you're in there. No paper towels for your hands, either. read more

Stopped in to Books-A-Million recently looking for a workbook to use in a class. It is actually a rare treat to go into a real bookstore as they are rapidly disappearing off the face of the earth!!! BAM is not like it used to be when they were fully stocked with people who knew where every volume of every publication could be found but hey, it is the best option we have left. Take your small children there because in the future real bookstores just might not exist! Books are expensive especially hardback books with shiny covers. I know e-readers have taken over but nothing quite replaces the feel and smell of real pages. OK I digress! The store is understaffed as are most retail stores of our day but the staff does try to be all things to all people. Not an easy job. You pretty much have to hunt and search for what you want but a bookstore can be a really nice place to loose yourself and explore. I wish BAM was like it was in its prime but alas those days are past. read more

Given the current state of brick and mortar sales, this store does a darn good job. Best stock of manga in town, with a few odd holes, huge graphic novel selection for all ages, big general selection, and a policy of hiring clerks with general knowledge of books, rather than warm bodies. The home office idea of getting into used seems doomed to me, but that's not under local control. read more

I love big bookstores and I am happy that we still have options in Louisville. My favorite bookstore was Borders and I still miss it. While I am a frequent visitor to both Carmichael's locations, and their book selection is excellent, they are not the places I go when I want to spend several hours relaxing because the stores are so small and there is no place to sit. I am at Books a Million at least once a week, sometimes more, depending on my schedule. While I prefer Barnes & Noble, especially the Hurstbourne location, Books a Million is closer to my home and is easier to leave without having to worry about getting stuck in traffic. They have a decent book selection, although it's not as expansive as Barnes and Noble's. The travel section, in particular, is pretty lean on the domestic side, unless you are interested in Florida and Disney. However, they will order whatever you like. The cafe is nice, although the quality of your drink will depend on the worker. The drinks at Barnes & Noble are very consistent, but not so much at BAM. In the summer I usually order a frappucino, and it seems to be different every time I order: sometimes runny, sometimes not enough liquid, etc. The employees are very friendly, which is nice, but they often gather in the cafe and get quite loud, especially when things are slow. It is easy to study or work at Barnes & Noble, because the cafe is usually quiet and relaxing, but BAM is much more noisy. The cafe worker usually greets every single person that comes in the door, often offering a sample of a cookie or whatever is being highlighted that day, so it can get quite noisy when you are sitting at one of the tables there. And unfortunately, except for a few uncomfortable benches in the back by the magazines, there is no longer anywhere else to sit. They used to have some chairs scattered throughout the store, but they are no longer there. My biggest complaint with this store is the restroom. It is dirty and ugly. I have been complaining about it for years, even wrote a letter to corporate, but nothing was ever done. At Barnes & Noble, the bathrooms are clean, they smell good, they are always stocked, and there are covers for the toilets. Not so much at BAM. There is little privacy, as the setup allows for viewing into the stalls, there is green mold on the backs of the toilets, the walls of the stalls themselves are filthy, as are the areas around the toilets, under the toilet rims, and the floors. There are no paper towels, and the room is just as drab as can be. I only use it when I absolutely have to. I often walk down to Hobby Lobby to use the restroom when it is open. BAM's bathroom is in desperate need of a deep cleaning. As I said, I frequent this store often, because it is the closest big bookstore to my house, and the book selection is decent, and the staff is friendly, but improvements could definitely be made. read more

This place provided me with the worst customer service experience I have ever had. I went to buy a book and the lady at checkout said that she signed me up for some magazine subscriptions without my consent. I did not want these at all and immediately called after getting home to cancel this subscription that I never wanted. I was told by the manager that "sorry it's too early to cancel, maybe call in on Monday and if not then try Tuesday". I will never shop at this store again and urge everyone to double check that they aren't signing you up for any other extra services at checkout. Just unreal, not surprised that these places are going out of business everywhere. read more
