This place has an Incredible view and upscale vibe but the food does not live up to all this unfortunately. The view is great and the setting with glass walls make you feel as if you are in the water but I suggest getting coffee or drinks unless you are ok with food that is just palatable. Dishes need improved seasoning all around. The Margherita Pizza is average at best. The fish soup was very good as it was hearty and had good consistency as far as broth to other items including fish. Things became less impressive once the entrees started rolling. The presentation for all of them was very appealing but the food needed more flavor and seasoning The Gnocchi is large size pasta and the white sauce needs more flavor. The fried cod fish and fries looks great. The fried fish had a nice very crispy batter and you can tell it is a good quality fish but it has no taste. I ask for salt and pepper and smothered it with lemon juice. The fries are crispy and good. The Falafel Salad Plate looks amazing as a presentation and combination of items but missing more flavor. My wife asked for more vinegar and also asked waiter to bring salt and pepper. The waitress was nice and informative and helpful. So, service was good although the main dishes where slow to come out. I would like to return in the future for coffee and dessert as I like the view but will hope the food flavors combinations get a lift up as far as seasoning and flavoring read more

I'm SO glad we were able to try this place out again. It was FANTASTIC! After our last dinner (almost a year ago) we were left unhappy with our meal but management reached out to us to invite us back and they were very grateful for our honest feedback which I super appreciated. Anyway, Covid hit and we weren't going out so that's why it took us until now to go back, and I'm so glad we did! I had the tenderloin this time and my hubby had the sable fish. My steak was PERFECT It was cooked beautifully, the jus was tasty, the veggies and mashed potatoes were delicious. It was exactly what I was hoping for. My hubby enjoyed his dish as well, he said it was also cooked perfectly. We also had the cauliflower starter which was super yummy! The service was good and the ambiance was as well. We will definitely be back! Last night was my 3rd visit since moving back to Victoria from Seattle in Sept '20 and by far on the low end of the scale. I'm Gluten Free by necessity of being Celiac and our server, though otherwise present and attentive, really showed zero concern to my safely dining at the restaurant. I'm sure all this gets 'old' with so many making requests on 'whimsy' ... but for those of us with health issues... it's a different matter. All dietary restrictions aside, the food just wasn't great, actually sub par. We were a party of 4, two friends visiting from Van and two locals. We started with cocktails, which were good! I requested a Hibiscus Margarita (which wasn't on the drink list) and was delivered a beautiful and tasty cocktail. Negroni & Whisky Sour also great reviews from the others. Appetizers were the Grilled Octopus and Olives. Olives were lovely and warm... the Octopus was mind boggling. We've all worked in the service industry for years and understand the basics of food... Octopus is tough... and when you marinade it, it can become quite tender and take on the lovely flavors it is prepared with. This sadly, was not the case. The Octopus was very tough and the flavor of the dish was an overwhelming feeling of breathing in a 'disinfectant'. My actual first thought was, this tastes like old mop water smells. There was sliced CELERY and canned chick peas in the mix along with what I assumed to be a good deal of liquid smoke along for the ride, for what amounted to something that I was pretty shocked to have been served. With 4 of us sharing a couple of starters with drinks, it's not surprising that there wasn't much left on the plate... and we did let the server know that it was not a good dish. Response... Oh, it's usually a hit, did you want something else. Not a question about what we found unpleasant. Mains... 2 x Steak Frits, 1 Risotto & 1 Black Cod = 1 x OK + 3 x Meh... I can only really speak for my own dish which was the Risotto. I'd had the dish on a previous visit and it was lovely. Last night... not so much. The server warned that I shouldn't touch the hot plate, I obliged as we waited for the 4th plate of Sablefish to be delivered... just a short time later. When we were all served and tucked in, I found the Risotto to not only be not hot but barely warm and extremely acidic but more of a consistency of Grits than Risotto and like someone had juiced a lemon across it prior to serving. All in all, I'm super happy that the company was great because we laughed and had a great time together. Good thing we treasure the wee bits of time we get to spend together... because otherwise the evening may have seemed a sorry disappointment. Next time the 4 of us get together in Victoria, we'll be sure to take this experience into consideration, when deciding where we'll dine. read more

It's good to see that, after such a long wait for the restaurant to open, the meal reviews have been positive thus far. As nearby residents, we walk by the location often yet have only managed to stop by for coffee and desert. Both were very good and the unlimited refillable coffee policy is much appreciated. In the two weeks or so that the restaurant's now been open, we had hoped to return for lunch or dinner yet have put this occasion off. The reason ... since day one, a very large yacht has docked immediately adjacent to the restaurant, blocking both the afternoon sun and beautiful southern view of the harbour and its activities including the cruise ship arrivals. Also, forget about viewing thsnow-capped Olympia Mountains while dining. We've passed on trying out this place for two special occasions (a birthday and now Father's Day) in the hope that one day, the yacht will finally set sail. It's a pity, so far, that diners are unable to fully enjoy the view that the restaurant has to offer. Perhaps the restaurant owner should talk to the marina management about the possibility of relocating the yacht elsewhere within the marina, especially if it is to be docked there regularly. read more

I am a Seattelite, but come to Victoria quite often to visit my boyfriend's mothers. We have been eyeing this beautifully structured facility along the water for some time now as it is very close to his parents' home. This visit, we were stoked to find out the restaurant had finally opened (about 2 weeks ago according to our host)! Naturally, we had to immediately try it out. My boyfriend and I walked in and were pleasantly surprised by how lively the place was, with tasteful decor and even a cafe inside! The restaurant was buzzing with customers, bartenders, and attentive hosts/servers. We ordered evening cocktails (the blackberry bourbon iced tea is a MUST try) and a couple of Basil Hayden bourbon on the rocks. Waiting to be seated as the table is not ready was the first red flag that organization was not up to snuff. Secondly only having 2/3's of our order arrive and them apologizing but not totally taking responsibility for the mess up. The poor third person had to wait for their food 5-10 min after the other 2 people got theirs. The whole meal should have been complimentary as the other two people waited for the 3 part to arrive. The front desk told us the restaurant and cafe was child free. She said it was their policy and then backpeddled, realizing she blurted it out. Can you believe that? We live in the area and we are a family. It is absolutely NOT OK to restrict people with children from coming to your restaurant. Nevermind that my child is well behaved, are they going to restrict people with disabilities next? We would have been weekly customers for this restaurant, spending upwards of $100 for their breakfasts. They not only lost good paying customers, who happen to have a child, but they will be hearing more complaints from me. They will be sorry they have this policy. read more

This was one of the weirdest nights I've had in terms of service. The food was great and the executive chef lived up to his reputation as one of Victoria's top chefs. He came to our table and ensured everything was going well which was much appreciated. We give him 9.5/10. Things got weird when Marco came up to our table and offered us "shafts" and special pricing on bottles of wine. These "shafts" were unsolicited and we were surprised where they ended up on our bill. Furthermore, after being offered these "shafts" and buying an additional bottle of wine (which we only ordered after the insisting of Marco) we were asked how much longer we were going to stay as they wanted to close down the restaurant. We thought it was odd that they would solicit us to buy more alcohol and then promptly tell us to leave after we had bought the bottle and the "shafts". In summary, the food was good but the service was quite strange. We hope they figured this weirdness out. read more

This was my first time trying boom and batten as they are fairly new in town. I was very pleased with my meal which was the duck, my uncle had the crab pasta and both were amazing, can't recommend them enough. My aunt however got the halibut and it was over cooked and dry. Perhaps a sauce or something could have saved it, but for $40 I would expect perfectly cooked tastier halibut. We ended up getting treats from the coffee shop attached to take home for dessert. We got the bee sting cake, jam bombs and almond croissant all very very good. I would recommend giving boom and batten a try, even despite the disappointing halibut, hopefully that dish improves over time. read more

I've now been twice for lunch and both times was impressed by the location (gorgeous view over the inner harbour and the plane and boat traffic going by), service, and food. It's a bit spendy, but worth it. Both times there were minor hiccups, I.e. today the kitchen ran out of pork jowls for the scallops entree, and the staff/kitchen dealt with it in ways that left us very happy (today an additional scallop on the plate, and the addition of bacon to the dish). The seafood entrees and pastas have been standout, and today we really enjoyed a vegan avocado & beet salad that had a lot of interesting components that really sang together. Helpful notes: there are menu options for a variety of dietary needs; the cocktail menu has thoughtful and well garnished drinks; when the restaurant has a wait, the onsite counter-service cafe is a good choice; parking is on the street. read more

My partner invited me to this place. They have all the tables outside because of the Covid-19 protocols. The tables are neatly spaced minimum 2m apart. We were greeted by three lovely hosts and one of them lead us to a table for two. The view is fantastic by the water. I ordered the Ahi tuna and it's the best! The flavour is perfectly balanced. I just wish they put more tuna on it. I was still hungry after I down it with dry Merridale cider. Our waitress Sarah S. was very lovely and friendly. She came to us just enough to make sure we have everything we need. At the end of my meal, I always make it a point of checking their washroom facilities to determine the cleanliness of their food handling. I totally was impressed. The toilets are superbly clean with a touch free faucet and soap dispenser. I would go back to that place again with a birdseeds in my pocket to feed the lovely song sparrows by our feet. My husband and I have been there twice and both times were very disappointing. The first visit was for happy hour and the food was tasty but the service was horrible. They completely ignored us. Never checked to see how our meal was or if we wanted another drink. Our server was MIA for about 20 minutes so I walked over to the bar to get our bill. Never saw our server again. The second time we were seated promptly and we had a server take our order immediately. The meat and cheese plate was mediocre. We were anticipating on ordering mains but just like last time nobody came around to check in so we hailed down our server through another server, paid and left dissatisfied. The lettuce was soggy, dressing flavorless and the chicken breast I ordered with it was what one gets from the frozen section at Superstore (preseasoned boxed type.) My $25 glass of wine was again nothing to swoon over and dessert beautifully presented but bland...again tasted like prepackaged. The price point here is outrageous for what you get. Recently had the opportunity to give it a whirl after hearing many positive recommendations. The location and view are fantastic! Had a table on the patio for lunch. Was in late October so outdoor heaters came in handy. Lots of decent looking offerings on the menu. Ordered the Humboldt Squid and a cup of the seafood chowder. The chowder was excellent and chock full of fish. The squid was a little different than expected as it is not battered like a typical calimari. It was extremely tender and tasty, but portion size was a little on the small side for the price. I probably would not order it again. Looking forward to trying some other items at next visit. Draft beer was great and service was friendly, efficient and prompt. Prices were a little on the high side, but to be expected given the waterfront location. The architecture and design of the building is very similar to the Cactus Club Canada Place location, but at about 1/10 the size. I look forward to returning and dining indoors soon given that we are now in the rainy winter season. read more

Being a group of adventurers that enjoy the restaurant scene in Victoria, we decided to paddle to Boom & Batten. On arriving to the "nautical place" we found that is not water accessible, and as they told us, they designed it that way. Since they seem to place themselves with the marina that caters only to the rich and boring, we decided that they probably have the same philosophy in their cuisine - expensive and boring. We decided to give this place a pass, even if we wanted to drive there by car. There are other great spots to eat in Victoria for these adventurers to check out. read more

No one would answer our emails or texts as we were instructed. I actually went in and the hostess said "no problem" and that the reservations manager would contact me. Two days later...still nothing. I called again and they said all tables are booked and that I should have emailed to make a reservation I know they don't need me or my family. They are busy. They have a great location. But honestly I'd rather give my money to somewhere in town that appreciates their customers...Boom is not it. read more

A great location, but poor management makes Boom & Batten a poor choice. Sunday at 4:00 pm, 5 of us were put on waitlist and told wait would be 15 min to 1 hr. We waited nearly an hour, I asked for status, hostess carelessly told me the wait was now 1 1/2 hr! No explanation, no concern for us as customers, she ignored us and let many other people in! After 1 hr and 20 min (!!!), the 5 of us left, went to another restaurant up the Walkway, were welcomed, immediately seated, and had excellent food promptly and cheerfully brought to us! Boom & Batten waitlist system is awful, and they need to train their staff, and management needs to reconsider basic customer service. At the very least, we could have been offered water or coffee as we waited! Great location, good food (a friend & I had dined here 2 months ago). But the 5 of us will now not be coming back and we are not recommending this place to others. read more

Got a recommendation from a waiter at a pub that this place was the best in all of Victoria, and although a bit pricey it was well worth it he said. Pricey does not bother us and I will say the ambiance was excellent being right on the water and our table and waiting staff were also very good. What was awful, was their steak, we each ordered the 10oz ribeye. My wife and I love steak and enjoy all cuts. One of our favorite is a juicy ribeye thanks to it's great marbling. I ordered mine just between rare and med-rare and she got med rare. The presentation was nice, but there was zero flavoring and nothing juicy about them. Hers was thick enough but mine was really thin. Mine was riddled with tendons and tough going the whole way. Hers was also tough as two dollar shoe leather. We are quite certain they were not even ribeye's. It's hailed as great cuts of beef here, but I'll take a $10 steak off the home BBQ before that any day. Not a $50 steak by any stretch. As everyone else is we are happy that Boom is finally open. The ambiance is lovely, location amazing. Our first try was dinner which was mixed reviews, my husband's salad and hangar steak was amazing, my fire-oven pizza was soggy and blah - however, the service made up for the shortcomings. There is some work that needs to be done in organizing the café. We were there on Canada Day (granted a busy time) and it took at least 12 minutes to get coffee and a scone to go - they were disorganized behind the counter. Three staff standing there seemingly not knowing what to do. Hopefully with some time and more training they will improve the service I also agree - the restaurant manager needs to ask the Marina to move that Yacht - what's the point of the location when the view is completely blocked? There is ample dock space on the other side... read more
