We celebrated my husband's birthday at Perro Negro. It is a cool tapa bar located upstairs in Ferris Oyster Bar. The decor is charming and creates a cozy atmosphere. The service was great, with attentive and friendly staff! We tried the gambas without chorizo, papas bravas, broccolini with the romesco sauce, and the roasted carrots. Each dish was flavourful and cooked to perfection. The gambas were a personal favourite. If you're a fan of tapas and small plates, do yourself a favour and visit Perro Negro! When this restaurant is described as a hidden gem, they mean both that: 1). This restaurant is hidden; and 2). This restaurant is a gem. Hidden in that it took me forever to even find it. I went into the restaurant that it sits on top of and thought I was at Perro Negro, but they directed me outside, through a narrow door, upstairs, and to the bar, I went to sit. It is partially located in another restaurant. But make no mistake, it is a gem. The bar is located near the kitchen, so I had the treat of watching them make my food (and train kitchen staff). The wines here are great. They did have spanish wines including a great Tempranillo, and cocktails inspired by traditional latin and Spanish drinks. Had the oysters - and those were delicious. They were fresh, well presented, and just fantastically delicious. Great service (including talking to the chef), and a cute cozy but clean modern decor, and of course delicious food. I recommend it if you can find it. Consider the items on the menu your reward for doing so. read more

Great little spot, like others have stated, make sure you actually go to Perro Negro. If I remember correctly, we were directed on the first level and second level before we found the spot. The vibe in the restaurant was nice. Felt like we were teleported away for a few hours. Everyone was chatting away eating. It was an open space, but not hard to have a conversation. Our waitress was prompt and attentive. She made great recommendations on wine and food. We ended up taking advantage of their special shared tapas menu for two at $59.50 CAD. I ordered some wine by the glass to go with some of the dishes. We didn't have any preference in the order, so our waitress brought things out as we finished. The spread included bacon wrapped stuffed dates, chorizo puffs, salad, veggies, croquettas, patatas bravas, prawns, beef short ribs, and a chocolate mousse-like dessert. Everything was so tasty! It starts off so well with the bacon wrapped stuff dates and you think there will be a dip in taste at some point. I believe the only dish we didn't finish were the veggies, done ratatouille style, we were pretty full so we chose not to finish this one and make sure we could eat dessert. She did figure out I was american when I tried to give her my credit card. I always forget they bring those credit card devices to your table outside the US. The space is reached through the upstairs bar at Ferris', but it looks like a more direct entrance will be available sometime, given the door and name plate at 538 Yates. They've taken over space above one of the unused shop fronts, turning the brick and wood beamed interior into a smallish tapas bar, with a cosy, warm feel. It is good to see Victoria using space in the downtown core, and not letting the upstairs of shops go unused. There's a depressing amount of empty space downtown now, I hope a trend that gets reversed, else more people will head to the malls, leaving the vibrancy of Victoria's centre to fade. Which is not good for locals or tourists. So good on Ferris' to take on a new project, and add to the series of relaxed dining spaces it runs. Everything on the menu is on shareable plates. The drink menu is long on wine and cocktails, a little short on the beer but has a great non-alcoholic section. There's seating for about 30-40 people, with some bar seating and lots of decent sized tables for two or four, big enough to get the food spread around, small enough so you can lean in and talk. There's a surround sound system playing flamenco, loud enough to cover up the ambient noise from the other diners, but quiet enough to hear your friends. I started with a virgin caesar, sevred with a fresh shucked oyster, a single muscle, and a tasty green bean (the word 'shuck' is a wonderful one, after ;juggernaut', it might be my favourite). The fresh oyster was juicy and briny joy, spiced with some hot sauce and a bit of horse radish. The caesar itself was hot, which I liked though was a bit of a shock on the first slurp. This place is a hidden gem! My boyfriend and I visited Perro Negro (back in late June) per a local's recommendation. The food was delicious, the portions are decent, and the service was beyond excellent. Our waitress (I feel bad because I don't remember her name, but she was absolutely fantastic) was not only friendly and tentative, but also did a wonderful job at recommending my wine. There was ever only one other table besides us, but I didn't mind it. It was a romantic spot as it feels very rustic inside. They also had A/C (score because it was about 80 something that day). This place is located above Ferris, which is probably why people have trouble locating it. We just walked into Ferris and asked the host how to get to Perro Negro and he walked us up. Food: 5 stars Service: 4.5 stars Ambiance: 4.5 stars The food here is phenomenal. My girlfriend and I are visiting from Seattle and are pretty hard to please. We deliberated for about a half hour on where to go because honestly lots of places here looked pretty good but not truly special. We decided on Perro Negro based on their online menu. This place does Tapas so expect to order a variety of plates and be impressed by all of them for their uniqueness, bold flavors and execution. We ordered the scallops with leeks and prosciutto (unbelievably good), the braised pork cheek with dried cherries, hazelnuts and brandy (tender, well seasoned, good size portion), salt cod stuffed pepper (very good but simple), ensalade (refreshing but needed a bit more dressing), and veal carpaccio with pine nuts and quince paste (fresh and beautiful), and two drinks. We loved everything we had but the scallops stole the show. The other dishes were extremely good too and paired well together. The salad refreshed us and the drinks (sangria and champagne) were a perfect pair for the food. Two huge parties came in which drew the waitresses attention away from us so we did feel a bit neglected but then another gentlemen stepped in and made sure we were doing well. On top of all of this, everything was $8-$10 a plate so don't feel like you're going to break the bank here. You can get a few plates and try some variety while enjoying the gorgeous space and not spend too much in the end. One major question remains: Why is this place not reviewed yet? I feel like I rarely give out five stars for restaurants anymore- but this place absolutely deserved it! Perro Negro is a hidden gem, tucked away within another restaurant Ferris Oyster Bar. These Spanish style tapas are authentic in flavor with a friendly price tag (considering the area). We tried the roasted cauliflower with hazelnut vinaigrette and pistachios- so good and a great portion size. The croquettes were second, filled with chorizo and topped with a honey syrup. We also ordered the ham and bread- This. Is. A. Must. For $14 you're almost served with an entire pig. The bread is nice and soft with a great crunch on the outside. The ham, is well- amazing and salty of course. They had a few spanish wines that we sampled, a Rioja and another Spanish white (can't remember which). We skipped dessert this time because we were embarrassingly stuffed. This is a must- go-to stop! The waitstaff were relaxed and very helpful, for our first time in BC, they made our experience fantastic. read more

Knowing before hand that it was a small-plates/tapa wine bar, I understood completely going in that its target strengths would be 1) small, but flavourful dishes; 2) unique and tasty drinks/cocktails; and 3) ambiance. 1) The dishes Small? Understatement. Tiny is more accurate. $10 for two scallops seemed outrageous, even for a tapa/small-plates place. Granted, they were really tasty, sure. But the portion size was laughable for the four of us, since that meant we needed to order $20 of scallops in order for each of us to try one. Their bacon-wrapped dates were equally great, if not the favourite of the evening. However, they too came in pairs and required two orders that were over-priced. I've had fantastic bacon-wrapped dates in two of Victoria's other tapa/small-plates places, both were more reasonably priced. The pork cheek was very good, and probably the most reasonably priced of the dishes we got. It was the only dish that felt appropriate to its size/price ratio, and the added great taste was a plus. Finally, the "various grilled vegetables" dish turned out to be cauliflower.... just that. tl;dr Surprisingly small dishes, even expecting that the dishes would be small. Unreasonable prices. 2) One of our party wasn't drinking, but the other three of us did. I asked the server which of two drinks was best and went with her recommendation. My partner ordered her own, and the third individual ordered from their underwhelming beer menu. My drink was arguably quite good. I was satisfied with it, and it was unique enough that I enjoyed it without complaint. My partner's drink was startlingly bitter, either because it was supposed to be that way or it simply wasn't a good recipe. The beer menu, as mentioned, was not craft, local, or exciting. Very poor beer menu for a craft-brew, bread and butter town. He later ordered a glass of wine that he shrugged off without fanfare. I probably would have been ready for another drink if the service hadn't have been so slow.... tl;dr 1/2 cocktails were good, poor beer selection. Craft-brew lovers seek elsewhere 3) Wow. Five small dishes and three drinks took two full hours. I was actually surprised by how slow everything was. And even more surprising was that there were three different people checking in on us at odd times (The second person who asked us how everything tasted before we even got the food threw us for a loop. It was the same person who told us the last of our five dishes was coming as she was clearing the table of our napkins and table water...). As mentioned above, I would probably have ordered a second drink, but it took so long to get the first drink ordered and in my hands, plus the food, that I was put off and just wanted out. The second key thing for ambiance is music. First half of our time there seemed appropriate. Then they started playing reggaeton. No idea how Mexican/Puerto Rican night-club music fits into a lounge/wine-bar type atmosphere. Very strange choice. tl;dr Startlingly slow. Odd music choice. Unusual server behaviour. In the end, I will not be returning. The food had something going for it. But not in that portion size, and not in that price. Drinks were adequate, perhaps even good, but the poor ambiance and service didn't entice me to stay around to find out. This was a small intimate hipster restaurant. Being a family of 4 from out of town and poorly dressed Americans to boot, we were pleasantly surprised when the wait staff seated us without hesitation and treated us like visiting celebrities. Suspicious of the foreign-sounding menu at first, our kids gamely soldiered on through the scallops, bone marrow and spot prawns and actually enjoyed the experience by the end of the evening. The wait staff did great at explaining the dishes and managing the leisurely pace of your typical tapas experience. I can't think of a dish I disliked and we ordered many: the dishes above as well as patatas, chorizo puffs, pork belly, croquettes, cheese plate, pot de chocolat, roast dates in cream. My wife says it was not very spicy, more subtle which sounds like faint praise but it was superb food. I did have a half dozen oysters on the half shell that were pretty gritty and the horseradish was flavorless, but that was just one dish of many excellent selections so I was still very happy with this place. My only other quibble was the price. $245 and the wine felt expensive but I was fine with it when you consider the service, overall food quality, and number of people who were happy at the end of the lengthy meal. No one ever hinted that we might be staying too long or looking out of place, so again, I don't mind having to pay a little extra for that experience.
