I have been coming to this restaurant ever since I was a little kid and I still continue to visit it frequently even as an adult. The food here is seriously always so good and the service is extremely quick. The small shop only has limited seating but the food gets prepared in a blink of the eye. My go to here is always the pad Thai. My only complaint is that the dried tofu use to be a lot better and use to soak up the delicious sauces making every bite of tofu super flavorful. They did change their tofu a few years ago but the flavor of the pad Thai is still one of my favorite around so I have learned to accept it and move past it. Definitely one of my favorite Thai places and I could just be biased from my childhood memories but the pad Thai will definitely never disappoint! read more

Authentic Thai spot with interesting menu items. I ordered Pad Prik (but apparently not the same as Pad Prik King, which is the dried red curry I was anticipating) which was tasty but heavily seasoned with soy sauce. The inside is small with only around 6 tables. My friend ordered a different menu, maybe it was due to the snowy weather but some of the veggies on the plate came out frozen, with ice coated. This is our first time here, and I know my friend adores this place for their authenticity and spice level. If you are not into spicy food, just make sure you order things that steer away from spice (ie: curry dish). My wife ordered Pad Thai Voon with shrimp, which essentially is clear glass noodles. The shrimps were amazingly large and for $15, that is an amazing deal. I ordered the Pad Thai just with vegetable as protein for $12. This dish is a home run and very authentic in terms of taste and texture. My son ordered the Pad See Ew with chicken for $11, and finished it all up. We also shared the mango sticky rice for $10 which honestly the mangos were extremely fresh and the texture of the sticky rice and the sauce all sang in unison. This place is really a hole in the wall with no decorations. Just a small room filled with benches, tables, and a cashier section. But every time you pass this place, there are always people eating inside. There are a few things that aren't great about this place, such as no bathrooms, and the portion sizes are small depending on what you order. There's only one server who managed everything by herself, which was amazing. But she didn't seem frazzled or anything and took everything in stride. I noticed a slight difference after splitting the check, and the tip averaged out differently. Just be sure to do the math. For the table, we got Som Tum, which ended up being spicy, but still good to eat. For myself, I ordered Tom Yum Koong soup, which has shrimp inside. It wasn't spicy at all, and very small. As someone who grew up around Elmhurst, this hole in the wall seems to be a staple in the community. I made sure to stop by with my dad after a morning of running errands in the area. It's been a few years since I've visited because of college, but not too much has changed except some minor tweaks to the menu. To start, we got two Thai Iced Teas ($4.25 x2) and two appetizers: the Chicken Bite ($8.95) and Fried Calamari ($13.95). For the main meal, we split the Shrimp Fried Rice ($11) and a Chicken Pad Si Lew ($10.95). Boon Chu's Thai Iced Tea never misses! I loved it all the previous years coming here and I still love it now. I think the Chicken Bite is a new add to the menu. It was alright but I think it would be more worth it to get popcorn chicken elsewhere and for cheaper. The Fried Calamari was also great and lightly seasoned, though I wish some pieces could've been a bit smaller, since some of the larger pieces felt somewhat batter-heavy when it came to the small crevices. The sweet chili sauce was delicious though at times overpowered the natural flavor of the appetizers so make sure to find a good balance when dipping. The Shrimp Fried Rice was delicious! But it would have benefited to have more shrimp. The Pad Si Lew was also great, though I would've preferred the noodles be softer. The Pad Su Lew also had a slight fishy taste compared to what I'm used to - from what I'd guess was Oyster Sauce. I personally didn't mind but it's something to keep in mind. As far as food goes, it might be worth skipping over the appetizers since the were roughly about (and sometimes more expensive) than the main dishes we got. The food was very flavorful and we were able to finish everything between two people for a decent price ($58.08) The restaurant itself is very quaint and small. I was surprised how quiet it was on a Saturday afternoon, but the ambiance was very cozy. Another thing I really liked was the design of the menu. All the items have an associated image which is great for someone like my dad who can't read English and likes to choose items at a new restaurant based on what looks good. Plus the menu is extensive! Seems like the perfect place to try something new each time. Service was great as well. There was one server who was very attentive. She brought over sharing plates and moved over an extra table when our dishes couldn't fit on ours. I'm a little biased since this restaurant holds a special place in my heart. I had lunch here with a friend. It's a hole in the wall place. There are small tables and bench chairs to save space. They kindly seated us and handed us a menu with many choices. We decided on the clam basil, yum seafood, pad kaprow, and seafood pancake. The food came out all at once. The flavor was good but there wasn't a lot of clams. The yum seafood also had good flavor but there wasn't a variety of seafood, mostly squid. The crabmeat was imitation and it tasted more like paste. The pad kaprow was a little too salty but it was meant to pair with the rice. Finally the seafood pancake had big chunk a of seafood but again it wasn't the a big variety, a sprinkle of shrimp, imitation crab meat, and some clams. Nothing was terrible. We were both surprised at how cheap this place was with rice or noodle dishes only around $10 and appetizers are less than $10. Portion size is on the smaller end but is perfectly filling for me. The space is a bit small but they managed to squeeze 4-5 tables in. The tables are pretty small so when we ordered 4 dishes (again we're hungry) we had to move another table to fit all the plates. Always love their food in this tiny restaurant. It's always good and fresh. My go-to is the pad kee Mao with shrimp. I tried their crispy noodles with chicken and shrimp and it's not my favorite, prefer the Chinese version noodles, but there are so many options. I also love their chives pancake. I always take my food to-go, but noticed the diners wanted to use the restroom. Notice, this is a small restaurant, the front of the door says "No Restroom". Boon Chu has been in this spot for years but I never stopped in. After what had to be 10 plus years, finally took the plunge. Maybe it's because it had such a good reputation that I had high expectations which sadly weren't met. The place has OG charm - small dining area with a large menu. IMO, the food here is below average for Thai food in Elmhurst. The grilled pork was too lean and dry, massaman curry was watery, and the Chinese broccoli with crispy pork was a bit bland. Pork balls and fish cake were good. Service here is decent but the prices for the portion sizes are high. There's no value eating here and honestly there are better spots that serve the same dishes. After a couple of takeout orders, I am now giving Boon Chu a stamp of approval. Its prices are affordable, dishes consistently cooked, and decors impressive. It's now my go-to place in Elmhurst, unless I have specific craving for other cuisines. Thai Fried Rice $8.95. Rice was perfectly cooked. Pork not hard nor dry. And the scallions and the sauce that came on the side really gave it a nice kick on each bite. Pad Thai $9.95. The signature Thai dish is a safe choice any time.  Everything was on point, except I wasn't too crazy about the raw bean sprouts. I'd rather them well cooked. Pad Woon Sen $10.95. This is the glass noodle version of pad Thai.  Nice variation but I still prefer the traditional rice noodle texture. Pad Sa Eew $8.95.  This is the non-spicy version of drunken noodle, my wife's go-to Thai dish.  The wide rice noodle was cooked perfectly and springy to the chew. Pad Khi Mao $8.95. This is spicy drunken noodle. I didn't realize I ordered it twice in a row for myself. The crunchy cabbage was fun to chow, and the spiciness begged for one bite after another. I love my meal. I ordered the beef soup which came with rice. It was tasty to me. Rich broth and had tons of bean sprouts! There were about 4 or 5 beef balls and some slices of beef. Yummy! Longstanding hole in the wall spot that I finally got to try after having grown up here. Great prices, good flavors, and LOVE the menu which has pictures of each of their items. 5 stars only because it's really good Thai food (like actually good and flavorful), for a great price, and no frills. I came on 2 separate occasions and ordered pad Khi mao, spicy beef noodle soup, fried chicken dish and Thai iced coffee. The noodle soup was flavorful, vinegary, and spicy. I love the fried chicken as it's super crispy but still tender and goes well with the sweet and sour sauce but also boon chu's special spicy sauce that they give every table with an order. Thai iced coffee and iced tea are both refreshing and not too sweet. Having been to Thailand twice, I don't necessarily consider myself a Thai food expert, but I have a distaste for Americanized Thai that is often lack luster and light on the spice. Not this place! I have been there only twice and both times have been amazing! First time, my partner and I were walking by and decided to go in. We tried so many different things and all of it was so good! From the steamed dumplings, the hoy jor & the chive pancakes, to the mouth watering thai fried chicken, spicy fried rice, and pad khi mao. The portions are great and the flavor for everything is amazing. We also got the thai iced tea and thai iced coffee to try and they were so good we took another to go! Forgot to take pictures of the food as soon as we got some items in the table. With a dark broth, not a rich broth flavor, but bec it had strong taste of soy sauce. Reminded me of sauteed sprouts in garlic and soy sauce, not for a soup though. The restaurant is small. Some small tables for 2 but can be moved for 4 or more. Wooden stools with no seat back. No restroom. Street parking. Service is great. Update: We returned to try our usual go-to thai dish - crispy pork with chinese broccoli. We liked the thinly-sliced, very crunchy pieces of pork. The squid salad was mildly spicy as I requested. i have been going to boonchu for like 7 years and I love the food there. I ordered a Tom yum soup with rice and found a cockroach in my rice and found a hair in my soup. I didn't find the cockroach until I put half of the rice in my soup. I didn't want to make a big fuss and went back and they said they will make a new one for me but they just put the same soup in another container cause there is rice in my soup. Ordered through grubhub for take out and because I was on the subway I accidentally submitted my order twice. Luckily the store called me to confirm that I really wanted double the order. I told them it was a mistake and they said they would be ok with exchanging equivalent items (appetizer for similar priced appetizer and entree for similar price entree). The take out process was relatively fast. There is only like 3 tables available right now currently for in-door dining. I got the Pad Khi Mao with tofu(3/5) The noodles were a bit tough and wasn't super flavorful. I did like that they used tofu puffs. Pad Prik with beef(3/5) This dish was also just ok. Nothing too special. Ground beef with vegetable over rice topped with some fermented? fish sauce. Fish Cakes(3/5) These weren't necessarily crispy and didn't really have a memorable taste or flavor. They did come paired with some peanut chilli sauce that aided the overall flavor a little. Som Tum(papaya salad) (3/5) I always enjoy trying the papaya salads at thai resturants and it wasn't really that spicy and it was just average. Overall the dishes were just ok. It's pretty inexpensive when you actually just go to the store to order for pick up rather than using the app. I may give this place another chance again in the future. Boon Chu is a neighborhood staple, serving reliably delicious Thai food and often open on holidays. Service is always fast and friendly.
