Waited an hour on Friday afternoon for walk-in. I was excited to try the top Thai spots in NYC and on top of that a Michelin Bib Gourmand restaurant. Price-wise was excellent with most dishes around the $10-30 range. Portions were large and meant to be shared. As for the food itself, I honestly expected better. If it was ranking in the same leagues as Fish Cheeks, Pranakhon, and Bangkok Supper Club on Beli, I thought the taste would be phenomenal but it truly just tasted like any decent thai spot I could find in SoCal. The only difference is that in SoCal there would be little to no wait. I must clarify that my qualms is not with the restaurant but with NYC having an issue of overinflating certain places and establishing high expectations of otherwise normal restaurants just doing its thing. The pad see ew was my favorite, and I liked how wide and long the noodles were. Otherwise, their Michelin Yum Duk Pla Fu was just another mango salad to me, and I had wished that the catfish tasted more like fish than breadcrumbing. The green curry was decent, nothing special. Update (May 2026) -- 4 stars I went back to Saranrom Thai today and I'm glad I did. The food was just as good as I remembered -- if anything, it tasted even better. They've also updated the ambience, making it feel cozier. I spoke with Jacob, the assistant manager, about my previous experience and the complimentary meal that was promised regarding the cockroach incident. He said he needed to verify it with the manager or business owner, and after 10-15 minutes came back to let me know the owner approved 50% off the whole meal. While I appreciated the gesture, I did feel it fell a little short of what was originally promised as a full complimentary meal. What stood out most this visit was Jacob himself. He told me he vividly remembered my party from that night because he was the one who seated us -- and he sincerely apologized for what happened. That acknowledgment genuinely meant a lot. They also gifted me a free mug, which was a sweet touch. The food and atmosphere continue to impress, and the staff clearly cares. A fellow foodie Sally W. suggested we try this local Thai place in Elmhurst, not knowing it is rated a Michelin Bib-Gourmand. I was so excited to try! Pushing through the crowds waiting for a table at the door, we secured a spot just beyond the doorway. Inside, it was very cozy and tight as far as seating. The restaurant dining room is really meant for single diners or pairs of people, as the room is not wide. Any group 4+ will be difficult unless you have a reservation and they planned for it. The menu has a lot of seafood, pork and classic Thai curry dishes. Those all caught my eye. It was hard to decide. The waiter was super friendly and all smiles. We asked for his recommendations between the dishes we were thinking of and his choices were spot on. If you are a fan of spicy/dishes with heat, there are plenty on this menu. I wanted to order a few but I was afraid to given the spice level couldn't really be adjusted on some. Started with the curry puff appetizer. It was really tasty, potatoes and onion as well as the curry powder flavor really came through on this. Delicious. For entrees, we tried the: - clams with basil sauce - packed with a mild chili paste heat in the sauce but stir fried to perfect consistency. Of the whole plate, a few clams didn't open so I tossed those. - duck panang - nicely roasted with crispy textured skin, paired with basil in a coconut milk and curry paste. Very delicious. - stewed pork leg, could've been more tender so it was a tad on the tough side. The soy sauce soup and boiled egg was good though. This is the best Thai restaurant I've had in America! We went on Sunday around 230pm and waited about 20 minutes but right after us the line grew pretty long and was a 1 hour wait. The place is quite small. I've been chasing the raw shrimp ceviche flavors ever since I had it at a night market in Thailand and finally found a close 2nd here! It was a perfect balance of tangy and salty. They gave us a decent amount of shrimps. The tom yum soup had a kick (to the back of your throat to it even though we asked for mild. It was tasty. The basil minced pork was also delicious with the Thai omelette completing it really well! My partner got the intestine herbal soup and it was pretty good! I wasn't in the mood for it. I got their pad kee mao (one of their most popular dishes) with chicken as well as a Thai iced tea. The noodles were chewy and had the perfect bouncy texture. You will usually have to wait for seats to become available. My party decided we could not wait two hours to enjoy the marvels of this cuisine. They also have a problem with chockroaches and rodents. This problem is part of NYC life. The city should tighten up their monitoring of restaurants to minimize this plague. I grew up in the city. I don't like their presence. Saranrom gets five stars from me for a perfect blend of high quality food, delicious flavors, and fantastic service. Also of note is the warm and welcoming vibe of the decor, and the background music, which tonight was old school funk at a perfect volume. We started off with fried tofu (boring, but super light and fluffy), marinated pork skewers (Moo Ping), and perfect Thai fried spring rolls. Food hits the table as it's ready, so all of a sudden you're eating! I have no issue with getting my food served hot, so I'm all for it. I just celebrated my Birthday at Saranrom Thai and this was my first time here but definitely not my last. First thing I loved was the staff and how friendly and attentive and helpful they are. It is some of the best if not the best Thai food I've had in NYC. The Crab Fried Rice is so fresh and well seasoned but the crabmeat is the star. The Duck curry with pineapple had the most divine sauce. The Whole Ted Snapper with Mango Salad was so crispy and tangy and full of flavor. I also tried Lao beer for the first and it's good. It's amazing how busy this place always is! I was luckily able to grab a table with minimum wait New Year's Eve and I can definitely see why it is always crowded. Starting off, we had the Thai Spring Rolls, they weren't anything special but definitely good crispy spring rolls with a nice and tangy sauce. Then we got the crabmeat fried rice. I thought this was a little lacking in flavor but it was loaded with crabmeat and my friend really enjoyed it. After, we got the Chicken green curry which I really enjoyed, it was had the perfect amount of heat to it but I generally like things to be a little bit spicy. Finally, we finished off with the beef drunken noodles which were my favorite of the meal. It was nice and saucy and the flat noodles had a nice chew to it. I came on a weekday afternoon with a friend with no prior reservations. Since this is a Bib Gourmand rated spot, it is almost always packed. Although we did have to wait some time, we were able to snag some seats as walk-ins. Unfortunately for us, it was the day before a holiday, so they didn't offer lunch special. In turn, it opted for choices that I couldn't get on the lunch special menu. My friend and I decided to share the appetizer MIANG KHA NA. It is one of the famed appetizers, so we decided to give it a try. It comes with green vegetables - meant for you to wrap it all up and eat it that way. As soon as you take a bite, the lime flavor hits you right away. The appetizer is a blend of citrus tastes meets crunchy texture. The green vegetable really comes in to balance out the overall tangy-ness. It can be sour, but it's quite addictive. For some, it can be a bit spicy for some, but it's quite mild (in my opinion). I personally chose to get KEE MAO THAI as my entree. It stated that it's original thai style and I've never seen this dish anywhere else to my knowledge, so I was intrigued. On first impression, it's not too different from other thai noodle dishes. I personally like the texture of the wide noodles. This dish is savory because it uses oyster sauce as it's base. Most of the veggie toppings inside are of crunchy texture - cut up peppers, cucumbersm string beans & baby corn. Overall, I really enjoyed this restaurant. I was satisfied with my meal. I haven't tried their Michelin-recognized dishes yet, but you can taste the quality in any dish you get here. The quoted wait times here are always around 1-1.5 hours, and its pretty accurate given the number of parties & limited seating inside. This time, we managed to get in after an hour for a party of 2. This place is busy! It's been a while since I last had their food, so when I was in Elmhurst this weekend a couple dishes for takeout was on my list of things to pick up! Dropping by at around 8pm on Sunday, it was surprising to see that their online ordering platforms had ended orders for the evening, even though the restaurant is open until 10pm in person. Apparently they are that busy--while I was placing my order at the host stand (that doubles as the pick up spot), and when I came back 20 minutes later--a steady stream of customers flowed in and out. Ordering was easy, the host doubles as a cashier and you can pay via credit card directly at the door. I dimly recall the host stand originally being inside the restaurant at some point and not in the tiny foyer, though seems like they're trying to maximize the seating in the small space inside. Food wise their Drunken Noodles $15.95 are popular and delicious. It comes with wide rice noodles, a choice of protein (no surcharge for tofu, chicken and pork, extra $ for other choices like beef and shrimp), sautéed with onions, red bell peppers, tomatoes, basil and a coconut chili paste. I also picked up a Yen Ta Fo $17.95 which comes with an abundance of squid, fish balls, shrimp, mushrooms, Chinese watercress, tofu, over flat rice noodles and a tangy, sweet and savory, lightly spicy soup. One of my faves! For most items you can customize the spice level - this place meets true Thai spiciness standards so I'd advise to start safe and work your way up after your first visit. Each time I've come the staff is friendly and helpful, and prices are amazing for the quality and value. If you're dining in, I believe they don't take reservations so get there early!
