Great new thai place! I can't comment on the poor service that the previous reviewer experienced -- we got takeout. But the food itself was amazing. The pad thai was really unusual -- flavorful yet light. Spicy, tangy, peanutty- yum! Spicy basil tofu was just as good, as was the red curry. None of the dishes seemed very heavy or greasy at all. Veggies were fresh! We will definitely be ordering from this place again, and will likely make it our go-to Thai takeout place. read more

The crispy watercress salad (#19, if I remember correctly) is excellent. This is perhaps the best rendition of this dish I've ever had outside of Thailand, and better than some of the ones I ate *IN* Thailand too. It's better than it's been at the famed Sripraphai in Queens for years, or maybe ever. They also have some very good curries here. I don't remember which other dishes we tried, but they were good, but not excellent. I'd give the crispy watercress salad (it's called "yum pak BOONG klob" in Thai) five stars. The curry we tried was four stars, and the other dishes were three stars. Overall, that averages out to four stars. The people running this restaurant are extremely friendly. And unlike some other Thai restaurants, these people are actually Thai, not other Asian people pretending that they know how to make Thai food. Not that you have to be Thai to make good Thai food but it probably helps to have grown up there -- there is a strong cultural culinary tradition in Thailand. Some of the people at Boonsong are from Isaan (northeastern Thailand) so I bet the laab/larb "salads" are really good there too, and maybe som tam (papaya salad) if they can get good enough papaya. I hope to go back soon and try those dishes. I also like Brookside Thai down the street, but this place is strong new competition. I hear that both restaurants also have special secret Thai dishes made for local Thai people on Saturday mornings/afternoons, take-out only. You have to ask about these on Friday nights and order ahead, apparently. I hope to do this soon. I bet those "secret" tastes might be a little wild and heavy on fish paste and shrimp paste for people who used to the "real thing," though. Mmmmm! read more

Came here for a family dinner with family friends who have never had Thai food before and they loved it! I got the chuu chee tofu tod which is a red curry and pad kee Mao. We got the curry a medium spice level and the pad kee Mao medium-hot ( it was the perfect amount of spice, mind you I love spicy). Everything was delicious and the service was great too! A go-to spontaneous spot that my husband and I have been to quite a bit. The food tastes like there's a Thai grandma in the kitchen (actually, I believe the chef is female) and the food is nicely priced and very good if at times inconsistent. We had the whole fish once and it was wonderful. Next time we ordered it it was dry and somewhat overcooked. But still, they have good specials, which we tend to order, and the price for dinner for the two of us is always surprisingly low. Pleasant service and it's nice that the owner recognizes us now. Update: last time we went (a few weeks ago) the place had a mildewy smell. The food was not up to par at all, portions seem skimpier. This is a standard "go-to" restaurant for me and my friend, who lives just down the street. We get a lot of take-out from Boonsong, and I can honestly say we've never been disappointed. Obviously, Thai food is a mecca for vegans, but my omni friend loves their meat and seafood dishes, too! I love the Vegetarian Curry Puffs, they are by far my favorite appetizer, thought the Steamed Chives Dumplings are also wonderful. I usually get a curry for my appetizer, because the portion sizes are perfect for leftovers and the flavor is amazing. Very satisfied with our visit here. I am gluten free and vegetarian, which is often a challenge when dining out, but here, they had a whole vegetarian menu, and the server was completely knowledgeable about what items could be made celiac safe (and even asked if I was celiac or not). Plus, a gluten free fryer! The Tom Kha soup was good (but I should have ordered it spicier), and I loved the papaya salad. Fried tofu was ok (and nice to have fried tofu!) but not special. I loved my Laad Na noddle dish; the sauce was great for being veggie and GF, although I wish it had included tofu instead of just noodles and broccoli. The food tastes authentic and is filled with flavor that'll make your taste buds go wild. My favorite dish is the Pad See Ew, it comes with noodles, chicken, and some veggies, highly recommend! This was my first time eating at Boonsong Thai, and I was surprised by how many people left negative reviews for this place. I stopped in for lunch randomly because I was running an errand in the area. It was a little later in the afternoon and there was a table of five finishing up their lunch. The menu had plenty of options for both lunch and dinner. I ordered the tom yum soup with chicken and the massaman curry chicken. Both were really good and above all, super fresh. Everything is made in-house and a family run operation. Since I was dining alone, I was on my phone and started reviewing the comments people left this restaurant on Yelp and Google Reviews. This is a family run restaurant that relies on repeat business and more importantly, new business. Not to preach but take the time before posting a poor review. I'm starting to think that maybe I don't like Thai food. I feel like everything I have had in the last year is so sweet, where is the spice, the sour, the complexity? Another overly sweet noodle dish. When I ordered the pad kee mau they told me they didn't have the thick rice noodle and would I take the thin ones? I got em, they were ok, but not the same. The second time I called for pickup and they said the same thing, so I ordered something else. This place is weird, that dish is a staple, and what's the big deal about stocking a traditional ingredient? It's cheap and a shortcut, but I'm not spending my money there anymore. I've been coming here for several years now, and I've gotta say that this is the best Thai place I've ever been to. It's nice and quiet, and has that "home" feeling that very few places has the ability to dish out. The food has this "je ne sais quoi" that gives this food a big edge over all the others. It also helps that everyone in here is friendly, and are ready to address any problems that might arise, and simply check in on patrons every so often. My husband and I have been back to this place more than a handful of times. It has become our new favorite Thai places. They don't have much going on in the decor or ambiance department, but it is comfortable in a homey sort of way. It's a family run business, or at least it feels that way. We get that 'Cheers' type experience here now, but nobody actually knows our names. We exchange pleasantries and are promptly seated every time. So far, we have yet to have to wait for a table but we might have to wait a long time for the food. We don't mind that though because their food is always fantastic. It is well worth the wait. We have had some of the best Pad Thai here among other things. The only reason I don't give this place 5 stars is because I don't think they have any emphasis on local produce or avoiding hormones and antibiotics in the meat, etc. It's possible they do have standards like this....as the food is very very fresh all the time. I just don't know what their standards are exactly and that is always a factor for me. Having said that, they are very knowledgeable on Gluten Intolerance and make many more gluten free dishes than other Thai restaurants. For that, I am most grateful and am sold on bookmarking this restaurant as a favorite of mine. read more

Tried Boonsong for the first time Saturday night. We had two couples and 3 kids total. The food was excellent. The fried calamari appetizer was very tender and didn't taste greasy; and we had another appetizer from the daily specials menu (some sort of shrimp toast, but much less greasy). The chicken satay (ordered for some of the kids) was nicely seasoned. Chicken in red curry was nicely spiced, as was the duck in red curry. The duck with honey, tamarind, cashews and pineapple was excellent, as was the chicken with cashew and pineapple. We also had an entree from the daily specials consisting of scallops, shrimp and chicken; all of which were excellent (large and tender scallops, large shrimp, nice sauce). Pad Thai for the table was also excellent, with large shrimp rather than the tiny shrimp a lot of restaurants use. Getting the spicy dishes medium still provided a fair amount of heat (unlike many asian restaurants which tone things down for Americans) and the more mild dishes still had a ton of flavor. The decor is pretty sparse, but the service was very pleasant and given how good the meal was, I can't wait to return. While I haven't tried every thai restaurant in the area, it was hands down the best of the bunch that I have been to. read more

I come here every time I'm in Bloomfield! The staff is so friendly and kind. I love their Pad See Ew and I always end up ordering it, along with Thai iced tea. I've tried Pad See Ew at other Thai restaurants, but this is definitely my favorite. The sweet sauce is so delicious! The portions looked very small to me when I first visited, but it was surprisingly filling! I can always finish the whole plate, but I end up so incredibly full afterwards.
