Typical Chinese take out restaurant. Food was not bad, but nothing stood out. Nice variety of vegetables in my chicken with garlic sauce lunch special, although it was more like garlic syrup! No real taste of garlic or spice, more sweet than anything else. Hot and sour soup was neither, but it was tasty! Both the chicken and the rice were oily. I have lived in Montclair all of my life, and I've had every Chinese restaurant in Montclair and most in the surrounding Essex County area. I promise you golden Chinese gourmet is the best one! We have been looking for good Chinese in Montclair for years. And we still haven't found it. Skip this. The crab Rangoon was really bad. The scallion pancakes were awful and tasted stale. The pork fried rice wasn't bad but not great. The general Tsos chicken was too saucy and not spicy. We also had the chicken with broccoli. Overall, the chicken tasted, I don't know, fake. Overall, our favorite part of the meal were the fortune cookies. They gave us a bunch of those. But even the fortunes were sub-par. read more

There's parking both on and off-street so the place is incredibly accessible. (Street parking has meters.) I got food poisoning from their "fresh" pork fried rice. I had to be sent to the hospital. We called them the next day to let them know that their food got me sick and they weren't being safe with their food and there was no apology. They claimed it wasn't their food. Trash!! Must be new owners cause this new lady working there doesn't practice good customer service. The food is made to order, hot, fresh, delicious, very straightforward. The owners are there every day and they are so nice. It's takeout only but right now DoorDash offers delivery. I grew up in Singapore and I can tell you that the food is really great. Don't hesitate. read more

While visiting my daughter( actually pet-sitting) who lives very close by to this take-out, I decided to try GCG...and I was satisfied to find that the food was solidly good and reasonable. Had the chicken and broccoli, with the hot and sour soup on the lunch special menu and it was delicious. And they give you a lot, too! Soup, like some other reviewer said, was excellent. Not overly spicy, but had loads of veggies and mushrooms in there...great consistency. The chicken and broccoli was nicely made, the chicken sliced thin and very tender and the "gravy" was good and not laden with sodium. This is the best place I've found in Montclair so far and I order Chinese a lot. I'm basically addicted to it. My idea of a perfect day is to order around noon, then sit around slowly grazing for the next 12 hours while playing video games and watching movies. Anyways, the highlights here are the fried chicken wings(a must have item for me), and the spare ribs, which are the best I've had yet. Still haven't gotten used to the yellow fried rice they have here in Jersey but I'll deal with it as long as they keep sticking that delicious BBQ pork in it. I've gotten food from here about ten times, and no bad outings yet. Doesn't blow you away, but definitely solid Chinese food. They do all the standards pretty well, and there's not much unique about the place. I'm confused by these reviews. And let me say that I'm not a picky Chinese food guy. Just give me the basics. But I just had lunch here and it was pretty bad. The chicken and garlic sauce was nasty. The chicken was like rubber...I spit it out since I have things I have to do later today and I'm not in the mood to roll the dice. This is the best Chinese take-out in Montclair, with the possible exception of TS Ma which has slightly different food. There are certain menu items which I judge by, including the hot and sour soup which is excellent and the cold sesame noodles which are delicious. I also like the double cooked pork (sometimes known as double sauteed pork) and the sauteed string beans with beef or pork. My son likes the General Tso's chicken. Who was that guy, anyway. The only drawback is that if you go to pick up your food, keep your eyes closed because the front waiting area (in front of the counter) is filthy. I can't speak for the kitchen which looks ok past the counter, and they have a "Satisfactory" certificate on the wall, but I wish they'd clean and fix up the front. Actually I've been ordering and getting really very good food from Golden. One thing I've recently noticed was that the food tasted even better than usual. This is my "go-to" Chinese take out. The BEST non-gourment chinese food in Montclair. Started ordering from there with my boyfriend's family and have never come across another take out place this good. The pork fried dumplings are incredible, from the inside out, and the dipping sauce is perfection. The shrimp with mixed vegetables is always delicious, as is the fried rice. i often eat food from here its good but i had my credit card information compromised here so i don't use it here luckily the credit card company spotted the funny charge and called me up, i like when the lady waits on me as she is fast and i get my fortune cookie with my order when the guy waits on me hes slow and i believe he was the on whotried to steal my info.so people beware watch when you use your debit /credit as the guy is sneaky.plus i don't want tyo pay a $1.00 for something ive bought for $5.00 i wish they had a table so you can eat there other than that its an ok place read more
