Because I'm four years old at heart, we had to stay in the boxcar on our recent Katy Trail bike ride. Location wise? Perfection. You can see the trail, you're right next to the best stop along the trail (Meriwether Cafe & Bike Shop), and right by the famous Rocheport tunnel. It's wonderful. The outside is cool too because there's a hammock and a small porch, but inside is really cool as well. Old wood floors, two loft beds and a standard queen bed. Water is potable, there's a bathroom and a shower and it's what you need. The A/C runs nice and cold and that was perfect for us on our return trip over the 4th of July. The other thing of note is that bikes aren't allowed inside, and they offer a little shed for them. Traveling by bike means that it's the most important piece of our trip and while Rocheport is a super calm, idyllic, safe place, it's still hard to just trust leaving our bikes in a shed... or at least for me to shake my city mindset of leaving a bike out. *UPDATE* We re-booked this to come as a family and it was a stellar experience. The A/C worked so well on a hot day, the hammock was relaxing and we had fireworks going off nearby. We left our bikes out, including our bike trailer and everything was fine. Love this unique spot right on the Katy, and highly recommend booking it and relaxing with the easy-going flow in Rocheport.

Located at the Visitors Center is a museum, gift shop and theater where you can watch a 20-minute film about the history of one of Missouri's oldest settlements. The parking lot is huge so that parking should be a no-worry. Be sure to get a map of the village as there lots of historic sites noted. Many of the buildings are still standing after a century and a half, including the legendary J. Huston Tavern. Speaking of which: at this time, the tavern is temporarily closed until the State (which partly owns it) finds new ownership. I was very bummed that I did not get to eat there recently, but here's to hoping. But be sure to check out some of the old buildings like the printing press museum and the old jail. Plan on spending at least a day here.

Kitchenette with all the essentials (pots, pans, dishes, measuring cups, coffe filters, etc.). Be aware that you will have to do the dishes as there are no dishwashers. Each room has a different lounging set-up. I prefer the recliners or sofa. The bathroom is really nice. New tile on the floor and shower. New vanities. New everything! Management is extremely helpful. You can reach them by text anytime. They respond to your needs quickly. And the rooms are cleaned once a week. There are only a few cons. The walls are VERY thin (at night I recommend turning the vent on the microwave on to drown out sound). The AC unit runs constantly in the spring/summer (this causes the pipes in the walls to pop at certain times which can be loud). And I think, stress think, these rooms used to be smoking before the renovation (bring some type of room freshener if this slight odor might bug you). I would definitely stay here again. It's a great value, great management and cute cozy rooms.

We had got into town early and just popped our heads in to check it out knowing we was early for check in. She checked and the room was ready so she took care of us right then and there! Beautiful space!! Bring a good book or play a game of tic tac toe that they have there! We look forward to coming back sometime!!

We were taken back at first by the sleepy town and old hotel and my imagination went wild in all the best ways. But once you get to know the people and history, you find the heart of a town that is so warm, kind and real. We love the vibe of this Iron Horse Hotel. It's so charming, unique, historic and is a one-of-a-kind find. Nichole was so friendly and helpful and puts a lot of love and care into this hotel. It's not your typical hotel--it's truly a unique old-town experience. The ceilings are high, the furniture is antique and the details are divine. Other than an occasional train (which is part of the history) it's so quiet and peaceful. We enjoyed our stay and if we are ever in the area again, we'd definitely stay here! After having dinner with friends in Columbia, we came back expecting to just chill at the Iron Horse but stumbled across a fun group at Dapper Daq. We had so much fun with them! In the morning when we checked out, we visited Christina's for breakfast and she made a wonderful spread. We left Blackwater feeling like we escaped the rush of highways, business chains and everyday life. Disclosure: there is no tv or shower--only a claw-foot bathtub. There are no dinner restaurants or gas stations. None of this bothered us. It added to the whole experience! I treated myself to a long bath and enjoyed the quiet (no tv, no car traffic, etc).
