2 years ago I paid them a hefty price to do creosote encapsulation on the joists under my house. It helped with the odor somewhat but was not gone as much as I thought it should be. Have been trying to sell my house recently and had another company come by to discuss a second coating. They looked at the job done by Boston brick and stone and immediately said it was too thin. Don't know if they were trying to save of supplies, on work, or just did not know how to correctly do the work. I do not believe they do creosote encapsulation anymore but I would not recommend based on my experience and new info. I was expecting a professionally done job and did not receive it. read more

Need a chimney inspector? I needed one to check out the chimney of my potential first home, scoured the web and stumbled onto Boston Brick & Stone. Since it was an early Sun. weekend I emailed them to get an appointment ASAP. Followed up today, Monday morning and to my surprise they had my information and were actually working on accommodating my inspection request. Fast forward to 12:30pm. Mark knocks on the door of the subject property (my appt. was scheduled for 1pm). Did a thorough exterior inspection inside, outside and on the roof with camera in hand. Brought out the video scope and explained what he was doing and what we were looking at. Finished up and kept everything clean. I was told on the phone that my official inspection report probably would be available in 1-2 days. I explained to Mark of the time constraints I was in and he said he would do his best to get it done today. Five hours later, my inspection report lands in my email with a description of the issues he found and per code, what they should be. Also included in the report was an estimate with a detailed breakdown of what would be done to get the chimney back up to par. Mark exceeded all my expectations in promptness, professionalism and knowledge. I definitely recommend Boston Brick & Stone and will continue to do so in the future. If you are a potential homebuyer, get your chimney inspected as it is probably one of the most neglected things in a house. Why take the risk and possibly burn your "new' home down? J read more

My fireplace needed quite a bit of work, both inside and out, and I was not looking forward to it, but I didn't want to go another winter without - so... I finally committed to getting the repairs Boston Brick and Stone recommended when they cleaned and inspected it last year. I was amazed at how clean a process it was with their system of tenting inside the living room. The workers were terrific and I am 100% satisfied with the work. The only caveat I would add, is to ask to see the bricks available for the firebox inside. Colors can vary quite a bit, and even though my choice was 30% more expensive, I was very happy with the result - and it was worth every extra dollar. This is the third job they have done for me, and by far the largest. They are definitely the fireplace and hardscape go-to firm. I feel very secure knowing these professionals have made my fireplace safe once again. You may find contractors who will quote a cheaper price, but no one who will do a better job, and that makes all the difference to me. read more

Used them on tricky chimney repair. The price was not the cheapest bid (nor was it the highest) we got but the work was top notch, they have insurance and use full-time polite and skilled masons. They left our house cleaner than when the job started. Their customer service is above-average for a contractor, specifically keeping in touch with me through every phase all the way to billing, you get the idea that they want to ensure you are happy with the work you bought and will do whatever it takes to ensure that result. First day of work they took an hour longer to get to my house which initially pissed me off (I only wanted to be there for the start of work, needed to get to my own office), but I checked sigalerts and what the foreman said was true, there was a massive freeway snafu and they had to take streets. The foreman apologized and they efficiently got to work. I did get a couple other bids, chose Boston Brick because theirs was more detailed plus I was there during all of the estimates and Boston's inspection was more thorough and included pictures (well, I asked to see them and they were happy to e-mail me the ones I wanted to see). I admit I was nervous initially with their price being above average (from what little I knew) but I ended up being very satisfied with my choice. Note on people saying they disagree with Boston saying their chimney is unsafe, I work in another construction field and this is common: an ethical contractor will tell you what you NEED to hear, a careless one will tell you what you want to hear so he can get you to write him a check. Contractors often have to bid what they feel is going to truly solve the problem and be in your best interests and I suspect that's what you ran into, whereas other contractors will under-sell if it means coming in lower than the other guy. Doesn't make it the smart thing to do (but I am guessing here, obviously I don't know what your chimney scene is and I am not qualified to judge since my field has virtually nothing to do with brick and stone). read more

GREAT FOR FIREPLACE CLEANING, BUT DON'T TRUST THE INSPECTION I called Boston Brick and Stone to clean the fireplace in my townhouse in California and have it inspected prior to putting it on the market. On the plus side, the company was quick to schedule the work and the guys did a terrific job of cleaning the fireplace and cleaning up afterward. I couldn't have been happier. Then Mark C. performed an inspection, took pictures and told me the fireplace was old, broken and absolutely dangerous, not suitable for any use whatsoever. He said the company who made the original fireplace was no longer in business and the fireplace couldn't be repaired, that it had to be completely ripped out and replaced. He said the cost would be somewhere between $15K and $20K. Mark was very to email links to the new fireplaces, mantles, plus a construction contract. I didn't trust his information. No one in my 80-unit complex has ever had to rip out a fireplace and the framed chimney. I called another fireplace company in the area, one with a stellar reputation. The owner stopped by and inspected the fireplace. He agreed that it was old but said it was in perfect working condition. I showed him the inspection report from Boston Brick and Stone and he said there were red flags and incorrect information throughout the report. (BTW- this man did not charge me anything for his time.) Now, very confused, I called a licensed inspector. He agreed there was nothing wrong with the fireplace and some months later, it passed the city inspection as well. I can't help but wonder how many perfectly good fireplaces have been needlessly replaced by Boston Brick and Stone based on their "inspection." As I said, their team did a wonderful job cleaning the fireplace (the other vendor, fireplace inspector and later, the city inspector, all commented on how clean it was). However, I wouldn't trust them to do anything else. read more

We recently purchased a home and during the routine inspections we found out that the whole chimney system (two fireplaces) needed an overhaul to bring it up to code and make it safe for use. We contacted BB&S (an independent inspector recommended them) and found them professional and on it from the first call to when the job was completed. Dealing with Keivin and his team was a breeze. He reviewed the inspection report, outlined the work needed (and recommended) and took me through costings. The job, a rather large one, was booked and true to their word the team arrived each day on time, worked diligently and finished a day ahead of schedule. Knowing nothing about chimneys myself, you have to take a lot on faith and in this instance my faith in Keivin and the team was well placed. On completion Keivin took me through each precise point of the repairs and checked off the work list. A truely professional company and will be calling them back to maintain and upgrade screens when the time comes. read more

These are bad guys. I have done significant work on my house and have used close to 15 contractors. Some have been great and some average. This is the only one I have taken time out to write a bad review. Dave will try to be your friend while at the same time inflating the price and sticking it to you. These guys didn't even finish the job and wanted another $9,000 to finish the work they started (This was already after I paid them in excess of $20,000 - money that I paid in good faith thinking they would finish the work). I eventually got the work done for less than $1,000! My last conversation with him was when he told me to F___ off and hung up on me after I told him that I would hold him responsible for his work. Burten and his team at Boston Brick & Stone did a phenomenal job for us! We operate a nonprofit music school out of an 1890s Victorian style house. Our chimney was collapsing and pulling the Parlor floor down with it. At the same time, the foundation of our house was deteriorating and we needed to shore it up via a Sister Wall. Initially, both our structural company and BB&S said that the foundation work should be done first, then the chimney demo or repair could occur. Burten also let me know that his crews were booked on jobs until February. Our foundation work was beginning on December 19. Burten did a personal inspection the week before the foundation work was to begin. When he saw the state of our chimney, he knew it would be a hazard for the construction team to work under the house. The chimney could collapse at any moment. Burten pulled strings and performed a scheduling miracle for us! He was able to schedule two crews to work on the demo the week of December 26. They even worked on the holiday to make sure that it got done quickly and everyone stayed safe. At one point we had four crews working under the house. BB&S and the foundation company worked so well together. They communicated clearly and frequently to make sure they weren't in each others' way. By Wednesday of that week, the chimney had been demoed. Burten's master mason rebuilt the façade of our fireplace in the Parlor so that it still remained beautiful. Most importantly, Burten's team was able to save our marble fireplace hearth. His team was friendly, professional, and super clean. They laid down paper and cloths to make sure they didn't track dirt in the house. At the end of the job, Burten told me that we were one of their most pleasant clients. I even got a call from Dave, the owner, who'd heard how wonderful the job had gone. He called just to express his gratitude and share the compliments his team had given me and my staff. It was such a special touch and really made my day! I would absolutely refer Boston Brick & Stone to friends, colleagues, and even strangers! They are truly as good as it gets! read more

We did some remodeling on our fireplace and needed to bring it up to code. Someone recommend Boston Brick. After a very high inspection fee they said we needed between $8,000 - $10,000 worth of work. I almost had a heart attach. We got a second quote from A Fiddler On the Roof Chimney Service for a much lower inspection fee. Their inspection report consisted of the same work for $1,000 which we had them complete. We passed the city inspection and were very happy with their work. read more

If you're looking for a professional contractor who flawlessly completes your project and leaves you wowed in the end, don't hire BB&S. We were certainly wowed...by how long the project took and their lack of craftmanship. In fact, we shortened their name to the more appropriate 'BS.' We hired BS to do hardscape and softscape on our backyard. While we were skeptical about a chimney/hardscape company doing softscape, they assured us it was one of their specialties that they did all the time. They even advertise it in their on-hold telephone messages. According to BS's contract, the project would take no longer than seven weeks to complete. The project started on 7/1/10, plant installation took another four months and the final walk-through didn't occur until month nine. Despite the project moving extremely slowly, we were asked to pay the final invoice three months into this nightmare. Per the contract, this invoice was not due until the project was completed so we, of course, refused. Our project was never officially completed. After eight months without the backyard being finished, it was obvious we needed to get rid of BS. There were clearly problems with the irrigation and they still hadn't delivered all plants. We hired another landscaping company to finish the project. It cost us $7,300 to get the missing/dead plants installed, the irrigation fixed and the rest of incomplete/sloppy work repaired. That's in addition to accepting subpar concrete work where the finish was uneven, large aggregate was left exposed and chunks of aggregate have already dislodged from the matrix. The original woodwork was of extremely low quality to the point where the gate BS replaced was not plumb or level and was sticking after only two days. The plant installation was abysmal and it took four months for BS to come out and attempt to complete the irrigation and plant installation. At that point, a significant number of plants had already died due to insufficient water and poor installation. On top of this eight-month ordeal, we also had many substitutions of plants and materials made without our consent. Over half of the plants were downsized with zero attempt on BS's part to notify us or compensate us in any way. Significant changes were made to the irrigation and lighting as well. Again, all without notification and no attempt to make it right. The money we paid to have the backyard repaired and completed and the cost of all plant and materials omitted amounted to $18,400. It was an awful experience, and the only reason they're getting two rather than one star is there are actually contractors who take your money and do no work. We used Boston Brick and Stone to inspect our chimney in Silver Lake. The price was right - $79, plus they offered a 'free video inspection'. Not surprisingly, the inspection turned up $2000 worth of work that needed to be done if we were to safely use the chimney. I had my doubts so hired another firm to inspect the chimney. They said everything was fine. Watch out for these guys. They're on time and do the work they say they'll do, but they'll try to upsell the bejesus out of you. Get a second opinion for any work they recommend. read more

First class, full service masonry contractor here! I hired Boston Brick and Stone (BB&S) this past summer 2007 for two jobs: replacement of a old failing retaining wall, and a demolition/replacement of an old stone chimney. I'll go into detail about the retaining wall job: I got several bids from different construction firms for this job. Some were cheap bids, but they skimped on quality and details. BB&S's bid was very detailed and thorough... several pages long. Bottom line price was not cheap, but I got a good feeling about BB&S. I ultimately decided to go with them. Work commenced almost immediately. The retaining wall job was fairly complex, as the wall divides two properties that are on different slope levels. The old existing wall was slowly leaning over to the side of a building... not much physical space to work in. Nonetheless, BB&S did an amazing job. Their expert foreman supervised the job, and the owner of the company, Dave, would come by often to check out the work. They removed brush and heavy bushes, demoed the old wall, laid a concrete foundation for the new wall, constructed the new wall, and finished off with a drainage system for the wall. BB&S got an engineer to look at the old wall, and to design a new one that would not fail as the old one did. They pulled the permits from the City, and when the City inspector would come by to inspect the progress, he would say that these guys really know what they're doing. I would have to agree with him. Their work crews really know what they are doing, and they have an extremely strong work ethic. The job got done in about a month, in less time than originally expected, despite some delays and hot temperatures. The end product will not be falling over or failing in any way during my lifetime. As Dave told me: That wall is solid - it's not going anywhere! Very professional, very clean, very organized, very honest, courteous staff and crews, quality work, foremen are memorable and true masters of their trades. A little pricey, but in construction, you get what you pay for. I especially appreciated the daily call from their scheduling manager, Holly, informing me about whether the crew was going to be out at the jobsite the next day or not, upcoming City inspections, materials delivery logistics, etc... This excellent communication with me, the homeowner, definitely helped to alleviate some of the stress that comes with home renovation. I would hire them again or refer people to them in a heartbeat. This kind of construction company is a rarity in our day of cookie-cutter construction and quick, cheap work. read more

I was taken to their shop and got to meet everyone. I had changed my mind several times on trying to decide somethings during the processes and they were more that willing to adjust to suit my needs. I recently had a fireplace inspection in our home on two fireplaces by Boston; one 30 year old rebuilt brick, and another 7 year old prefab unit. The inspector, who was very professional, and very cautious, was in my home for less than 10 minutes before he recommended that we needed to entirely dismantle the newer fireplace ($7,100 their cost to repair) and replace it, as it had not "been installed properly". I should add this fireplace has been working perfectly for 8 years, and our house has not burnt to the ground yet. The written report, submitted via email later, also recommended complete demolition of our other fireplace and replacement with a new fireplace! Wow! Who knew we had a massive fireplace dilemma on our hands! I sought a second opinion from our contractor, who had installed this fireplace, and whom we have known for 8 years. He has impeccable credentials for quality and excellence. He had one of his men come by and look at our fireplace that had not "been installed properly", and they made a simple repair with sheet metal. Total cost: $500. The final piece that caused me caution was a follow up call I received today....fishing for work. The woman on the phone wanted to know if we wanted Boston to do the work. I said I had sought a second opinion from a general contractor - at which point she made a disparaging comment about how general contractors don't know what they are doing with fireplaces.... Just be very careful. This feels like a racket to me.... read more

This company is only interested in projects that cost a lot of money. The man who came to my home was clearly disappointed that I wasn't interested in tearing up my driveway completely and only wanted a repair. He kept talking about how much money his company was going to make on the project. He promised he would send me a quote, which never came. I called him and asked him if he was going to be sending the quote, and he called me back and said yes, it would be sent in a day. That was over a week ago. I do not recommend this company, even if your project is a large one. They have very poor customer relationship skills. read more

A tree fell on my front yard and destroyed the masonry work in front of my house. I needed an estimate for the work and needed to work with my insurance company on the repairs. I found the team at Boston to be highly responsive, courteous and very professional. The inspection and subsequent estimate was not only completed with extreme attention to detail but was also completed in timely manner. While I have not completed the work yet I can tell just by their professionalism and willingness to provide all the details and facts about city codes tells me this team has their stuff together and will do an amazing job. I have seen some of their work at other places in the region and was very impressed. They are probably not the cheapest around but you get what you pay for and in this case it's quality workmanship. read more

I was very impressed with Boston Brick and Stone. I called to make an appointment, and the company was very efficient and responsive--they managed to get me an appointment for the very next day to inspect the chimney. Burton and John came out to try and identify where rain water was getting into my fireplace area. They arrived early, and really took the time to properly identify the problem. Burton quickly identified the problem as being in the roof area near the chimney, and they reconfirmed this when checking in the attic, on the roof near the chimney(exact spot) , and also checking in the fireplace. They said the problem had nothing to do with the chimney or fireplace itself , which was great news. They sent me a very detailed and thorough report with pictures within 2 days (as promised) after their inspection. I utilized their report to have the roofer know exactly where he needed to look to fix the problem. The roofer believes he fixed the problem that he saw in the report, and all I can say is so far ( after last weeks rain storm), so good. Hope this info helps. read more

They obtained the permit, completed the work on budget and on schedule and with minimal interuption to our lives. There was some confusion over when they needed access to the inside of the house, but this was a minor inconvenience. At the end of the job I was very happy with the final produce. read more

DO NOT USE. Absolutely terrible company. Our home was built in 1986; and they recommended both chimneys be rebuilt/replaced at a cost of $20,000-$30,000. Another reputable company did their own inspection and found only minor repairs needed for $2500. The only conclusion I can reach is that Boston Brick was trying to SCAM me out of $30,000 by providing bogus recommendations. Boston Brick and Stone is a pretty expensive company to hire. I thought they would be extremely top of the line when it comes to customer satisfaction but that is not really the case. There was so much waiting for the job to be done; this of course was not their fault. I live in a historic neighborhood. When they began the work the workers were very good at setting up and not making a mess inside the house. As soon as they began the work I was charged for the work. They were pretty good at charging on time for every little thing that was done or being finished. The person who I spoke to who gave me the final price on how much I would be spending on the job was a joke. I was quoted $22,000.00 for the whole job including a mantle. This is for a demolition and rebuilt. Later on they add little things like, dry wall and framing which should have been included since I had discussed "the whole job". The person only gave me a verbal agreement on the mantle and although he kept his word he had no knowledge of what a mantle job entailed. I ended up paying and extra $100.00 for the mantle because HE went over his budget. The works were not so clean outside the house. They did scratch and leave marks on my sidings on the side of the wall. They left all the equipment on my property and would leave. I would cover things up and worry about the neighborhood cats coming over and using the cement and mixings as a litter. They didn't care or worry about that. I later on get a late billing because they forgot to bill me. This happened after I believed I had finished paying the company what I owed. I wasn't very happy about this. Over all be careful about the "extras" they charge up. I would discuss all the painting, dry wall, and framing before agreeing on anything. They do not know anything about mantles so I do not recommend them on mantle jobs. I'm sure I could have had this job done for cheaper but went with them thinking they would not have any issues what so ever. Yes, they can be sneaky and if you're not careful. Things will be added on to your bill. The work inside the house for framing and drywall was not good at all. They send all kinds of worker they hire, workers who are specifically hired to do just one thing. The fire place is o.k. and I like the job but I sure did go through a lot of waiting and extra charges which didn't make me happy. read more

After contacting a few contractors for bids on my fireplace I selected BBS. They were not the least expensive but their work ethics are far above any I have encountered. Very methodical workmanship, from detailed bid to fireplace completion. I was some what anxious about my choice of materials. I did not what a new look, I wanted a stone facing that would reflect the local environment. I wanted the fireplace to look like it was part of the house since the day it was built. The staff at BBS understood better than I did of what I wanted because the end result is better than I imagined. My fireplace is a true work of art. read more

This review is 10 years late because today I learned what a misleading, gouging company Boston Brick & Stone is. First off I will say by all reports that the work they do is first rate and professional. The trouble is they recommend and generate work that is much of the time unwarranted and very expensive. 12 years ago when I bought my home, I had them come out and professionally inspect the chimney/fireplace to my 1938 home. They came out with scopes and video and their findings seemed impressive and legit. The diagnosis was "my box was too big for my flue" and in order to correct that it would require $15,000+ worth of major repair. There was no way I had that kind of $ so for 12 years I never enjoyed a fire in the fireplace. Today thanks to a strong recommendation from a friend, I had a very experienced (40 years), very knowledgeable chimney sweep come out and inspect and clean. He told me that while my flue was a bit on the small side, it was all in good working order and there was no reason not to use it. 12 years without being able to enjoy a little fire on holidays or special occasions. I should be furious with BB&S but I'm not. I'm just a little sad for all the missed opportunity. I will NEVER EVER call them again for anything. From their own advertising I read they had gone thru some business reversals but that the owner was not committed to getting back to what they loved doing, working with their customers and doing the job right. We recently purchased a 1910 craftsman in a historic neighborhood of Orange County (there is one - really!). During the inspection it was uncovered that the chimney was falling in on itself and needed a full replacement. We were referred to Boston Brick and Stone by many people because of their deep experience working with historic homes and the cities and boards that protect them. Burton and his crew were absolutely fantastic. They went above and beyond in working with our local historic society to get the needed changes approved which was no small task. The crew was incredibly clean when working in the living room of our house, they were professional, kind, and so clear on what they were going to work on each day. Even though I was here with the crew each day, I received a call every single night from the foreman recapping what had been completed and what the plan was for the next day. Fantastic work and the best work crew I have ever worked with. I would recommend Boston Brick in a heart beat. read more

Boston Brick and Stone recently completed a 1200 sq. ft. driveway replacement and constructed a walkway alongside my home from the front to the back yard. I was completely satisfied with the work and business relationship. I had originally intended to replace the severely cracked (by roots) driveway with concrete and originally asked them for a bid for the concrete job. After some discussion about options with the very knowledge estimator, I decided on using paving stones, which I think give the home a much more elegant look than concrete, at essentially the same price. After receiving other bids, and some negotiating, I selected Boston Brick and Stone job at a middle of the field price. I felt much better about selecting them, rather than the low bidder, based upon the professionalism of the estimator, the details of the written bid, and the very favorable recommendation of one of my neighbors who had used them for a chimney project. It was an excellent selection. They did everything specified in the contract and more. The offending roots were all removed as well as an adjacent Yucca plant that other bidders didn't want to touch. The work started on time; the job site was tidy; the Project Manager was on-site for much of the time; the company owner visited several times; the work crew was friendly; and the cleanup was complete. I was particularly pleased about the Company's careful supervision of the job because I wasn't able to be on-site myself during much of the work. The job turned out perfectly. I was concerned about the slope of the driveway so as to prevent water running into the garage, and they paid good attention to the issue. The workmanship on the setting of the pavers and the borders was excellent. I am very pleased with Boston Brick and Stone's total performance and would use them again, and recommend them to anyone for a paving stone project. read more

BB&S review Our chimney (two story house) had slowly separated from the house and had also cracked inside the firebox. We knew it had to be demolished and rebuilt but put it off because we dreaded dealing with a contractor. (based on experiences with other contractors") We expected a nightmare of delays, mess, added "unexpected" expenses and spotty communication. Lucky for us, my husband found Boston Brick and Stone in Pasadena, California. This company truly understands Customer Service and provides quality workmanship. Mark (showed up on time!) conducted the inspection/estimate and was very thorough. He took photographs inside the chimney and inspected the outside and from the roof and inside the attic explaining as he went along, That evening we had the detailed estimate including the photos. From the estimate to the final clean up, every single person, including every member of the work crew was prompt, courteous, professional, conscientious, and thorough. They quickly addressed the questions we had and even broke down our estimate into three smaller jobs so it was more workable with our budget. When we decided to hire them for the job, they immediately sent us a start date and schedule of dates for completion. They left a courtesy voicemail each evening informing us what time their crew would be out the next day. They were like clockwork. At the end of each day, they left our yard clean and orderly. I would NOT recommend this company. They do mediocre work and they have terrible communication skills with each other and with the client. The left hand doesn't seem to know what the right hand is doing. They call themselves a "Premiere builder " but I did not see any evidence of that. They are far from a premiere construction company but their prices are DEFINITELY premiere. I don't mind paying high prices for excellent work but their work is FAR from excellent. Their prices are way out of sync with the quality of work that they do. In closing I will have to say that everyone I dealt with on this job was very nice, but honestly for what I spent on this job I would rather have had them be less nice and have done a higher quality job. read more

The work they did was good and the workers were very nice. WARNING. watch out for the management, they play it very shady. I my case I ended up having the electrical done but Boston Brick wanted to be paid as if they had done the work. They tried to bully me and threatened me into paying for the work they did not do. they even had a good cop bad cop routine worked out. Get everything in writing before hand do not trust that they will be honest, they will NOT be. read more

Boston Brick and Stone fixed my fireplace (replaced brick in the back wall) and installed a top damper. After they came out the first time I tried the fireplace and the house filled up with smoke. I contacted them about the problem and they sent someone (Alex) out right away. He diagnosed the problem and got me an appointment for the following day to fix it. They put in a smoke guard and changed the angle on the top layer of bricks and now the fireplace works wonderfully. I gave four stars instead of five because the job wasn't done perfectly the first time, but I was very impressed with how quickly they fixed the problem! read more

Not the masonry experts they present themselves to be. A few years ago I had Boston Brick & Stone come out to quote for restoring the brick foundation of my hundred-year-old house. The original foundation was going to be retrofitted and reinforced from the inside and I needed the exterior to be repointed to era-correct standards. First of all, the guys didn't know anything about mortar analysis, let alone understand that they needed to match the original material for it to be correct. They said they only use portland cement (which could have destroyed the fragile antique bricks). I'm like, huh? You ostensibly restore old chimneys all day and don't know anything about repointing historic masonry? Clearly they need to read some preservation briefs. I said thanks for your time and brought in real experts who perfectly preserved the original brick and matched the hundred-year-old mortar in texture, color, and tooling. After reading these reviews I believe the core of their business is running an inspection racket, so please think twice before hiring them to do any sort of restoration work on your historic masonry. read more

Kudos to Boston Bricks and Stone for repairing my gas fireplace. Alex came earlier than scheduled which was awesome, and not only did he inspected the fireplace well but was well-mannered and cleaned up the mess. The inspection caused $25. I agreed for him to return to make the repair for $165, and the fireplace is up and working again. Alex is someone that I would highly recommend for gas problem. He is knowledgeable and does a thorough job. He was nice to come early for the inspection, and courteous to call when he was running late for the repair. read more

Our house, built in 1927, had seen it's share of earthquakes, rainstorms, and toasty Valley temperatures. While we'd re-stucco'd the exterior the previous year, we'd completely avoiding rebuilding the chimney, fearing the expense. From the outside it looked fine, but there were definitely issues internally. The BBS inspector ran a camera all the way through the chimney, looked things over, and came up with a great solution involving a special process that re-coats the inside walls of the chimney. Fantastic, and way less money than we thought it would be. It's summer and we've only lit a couple fires in the fireplace so far, but it's been at least 20 years since that fireplace was safe to use. Absolutely wonderful to find a company that does such great work, and so quickly. read more

Do not hire a Chimney and Fireplace cleaner whose primary busines is Chimney & Fireplace builder....you will wind up with a broken chimney and fireplace. I received flyers from Boston Brick & Stone for Chimney & Fireplace sweep for $120. I called them to clean two Chimney & Fireplace, my rental house before I rent it out, and home. This is how they broke them and their proposal to rebuild what they broke one for $20,000 and the other for $9,000. I do not want to rewrite the story, so here is the copy of my email reply to their proposal: " We hired you just to clean our Fireplace and Chimney, we did not ask you to evaluate the condition of our Chimney & Fireplace. We knew from our observation that your main purpose of coming here is to find problem or create a problem on our Fireplace and Chimney to get more bigger job than just cleaning the chimney & fireplace. At 115 S. Roosevelt Ave., we observed that you spent more time in measuring the entire Fireplace, taking pictures and evaluating the condition of the Fireplace by touching & pushing parts of the structures. You were up the roof for a long time....I do not know how long you were pushing that Chimney to break the bonding of the brick from the cement. You know, by shaking that Chimney that you weaken the structure of that Chimney. And after I paid you for the cleaning, you called me and you went up the roof again to demonstrate to me the shaking of the Chimney . We do not have the $20,000 you want to fix the problem that you created, so if that Chimney collapsed you & your Company will be liable for it. Regarding the $120 cleaning job, this how you did it....you moved all furniture that is on your way....put paper from front door to the fireplace...You did not cover the fireplace....the other guy swept the chimney for less that 10 minutes while you were catching the dust with vacuum cleaner (how stupid!!!!!).... the dust came flying all over the living room (I almost yelled at you to stop)...the sweeper came down, and I overheard you said "It's useless this fireplace is not usable"....so the sweeper started removing the paper & plastic on the floor & furniture...and you collected the check. You did not even put the furniture back in placed. I found out later that you did not put back the chimney screen wire that you removed, so I have to go up the roof to put it back. We also dusted and vacuum the whole living room. At 147 S. Roosevelt Ave., you did more detailed measurement here ready to reconstruct as I noticed from your proposal & you even wanted to enter the attic to see the part of the chimney there. When I denied your request and asked you why you have to go there , when I just hired you to clean the fireplace....you said nothing and proceeded with your camera inspection. This is my observation of how broke this fireplace....first you took several pictures inside the fireplace and I saw you touching and pushing the tile that you later showed me moving....then you inserted a camera with metal extensions and took several pictures with it....when you are pulling the camera out you said it got stock, and you shaking it by pushing and pulling repeatedly. I noticed later several chip on the tiles....after you got the camera out, I noticed that you touched that tile again....then you cover the fireplace with paper and told the other guy to start sweeping the chimney....when the sweeping started, you inserted your hand with the vacuum cleaner inside the fireplace and started swinging back and forth to catch the falling dust, but I also noticed that you extended your arm further as if you were trying to reach something....after the sweep you finish up the vacuuming....then you showed me the back tile section was moving detached from the grout of the side sections. When you were doing this, I was curious why you were doing this, specially why you were caching the dust with vacuum cleaner after you cover the fireplace, that is why I knew your hand was doing something there inside the fireplace. This Fireplace was solidly built...I know you causes this problem to justify your $9,000 proposal to fix it . This teaches me a lesson of "Not to hire a Chimney Sweeper whose primary business is construction of Fireplace & Chimney"". In conclusion I wind up paying BB&S $240 to break my Chimneys & Fireplaces. read more

Mark Peters went the whole nine yards and then some in completing waterproofing of two existing brick planters and removing 160 square feet of used bricks in back yard to comply with instructions of my arborist. He taped out this area of herringbone bricks to be removed to be completely aesthetic and feng shui with design of yard; and the folks doing the work were competent and very nice. read more
