We bought a house a few years ago with some issues, and it's been one problem after another. Recently, our chimney started leaking whenever we had heavy rain. I did my due diligence and called three contractors--not only to compare pricing, but also to gauge experience and get a sense of trust and assurance. Hiring a contractor for a big job can be nerve-wracking, especially in construction where there can be so much ambiguity. Out of the three, Arthur, the project manager at Universal Builder, was the most professional and made me feel the most at ease. Hired this company for new roof on our home. Rate quoted doubled after original roof was removed even after the they thorough checked my roof during consult. What should've been a $20k job turned into a $40+k job. Even the hired hands that came out and actually worked on the roof, asked us why are they replacing all the wood when the wood we had was still good. They completed the tile work in a day (project took about a week in total) but we didn't see the actual tile until they were done. When we saw what they put on it was a totally different color than what we asked for. We didn't see the tile when it was brought in because they took it straight to the roof. [[HIGHLIGHT]]We notified the company and they tried to downplay the color error and say that is the color we asked for, even though it wasn't.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] To save themselves money for their error, they just said that they will lay another layer of tiles over the top of what was already applied. Funny, because during the consultation they adamantly said that laying a second layer is too heavy for a roof and it's best that we remove all the original tile and put new tile, single layer. Then because of their error, they are now doing what they said was too heavy. I recorded the whole consultation and replayed for my family their exact words. I would not recommend this company to anyone I care about. If I would have checked their reviews before hiring them, I would have gone with someone else. We hired Universal Builders for a home renovation (paint, kitchen, bathrooms, flooring), and the experience was pretty bad. The project timeline nearly doubled, often with only one worker present. We ultimately paid the final invoice with some pieces still unfinished, and--predictably--it was never completed. It turns out that much the electrical work was unsafe and not to code, requiring thousands of dollars in corrective repairs by a licensed electrician. We have photos, documentation, and dated materials proving responsibility. Paint quality was sloppy, concrete steps were poured unevenly, hardwood floors were damaged, and crews routinely left trash across the property. Items went missing and promised reimbursement was never provided. Poor supervision, zero quality control, and disorganized materials management. Lost original antique door hardware. I hired Universal Builders for a full roof replacement and honestly this whole thing turned into a nightmare. When I first met with their salesman Nick (superintendent), he told me straight up they wouldn't be the cheapest, but they'd give me the best quality, send their "A team," and that all the workers were Universal employees, not subcontractors. [[HIGHLIGHT]]He promised me a professional job with good communication.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] That's what I thought I was paying around $30,000 for. Unfortunately, that's not at all how it went. On day one, right after demo, I got hit with a massive change order for plywood decking. Nick had even promised there'd be a bathroom on site, but there wasn't. I had to negotiate the change order down, and then the next day I found out they were installing the wrong plywood thickness -- half-inch instead of the 5/8 I was supposed to get. Half the deck was already laid before I climbed up and caught it myself. They fixed it because I caught it, not because they were paying attention. That set the tone for the whole job. I kept finding sloppy, unacceptable work. Flashing around the AC curb, chimney, and skylight was missing or cut short and filled in with caulk. The cricket behind the AC curb was too short, with a big gap just smeared over with caulking. Vents were caulked with pinholes left. Brand new shingles were scuffed and scratched because nobody bothered to use foam pads. I found razor cuts in the underlayment about to be covered up with shingles. Decking boards not nailed into rafters properly. Bent nails left in rafters, overdriven nails in new shingles. Pee bottles in my attic. Trash left around my property. And nails all through my gravel driveway because nonexistent or poor magnet sweeps until I demanded it. I've had to pull nails out myself just to avoid flat tires. The "A team" Nick promised turned out to be day laborers paid cash by the day, not actual Universal employees. [[HIGHLIGHT]]Every time I checked, I found something wrong. Instead of owning it, Nick and his supervisor Tony turned hostile.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] [[HIGHLIGHT]]Tony even called me an "entitled homeowner" who didn't want to pay, and told me "this isn't our first rodeo" and that they had "tools at their disposal." Basically trying to intimidate me instead of fixing the roof.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] That was it for me, I refused to deal with them anymore. Thank God I have cameras all around my house because every conversation and interaction got recorded. At a certain point I basically had to act like my own lawyer, building a case in case this ended up in court. That's how bad it got. [[HIGHLIGHT]]Eventually I escalated things to Lily in their office and Armon, the CEO. Once Lily got involved, things did improve, she was professional and actually seemed to care but by then it was already the end of the project, and all that was left was chasing corrections just to get the roof to pass inspection.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] In Riverside county roofing contractors can self certify their permit, it's a county policy not something universal made up. But because of the problems not being remediated I wasn't comfortable with this and called the County myself to send out an inspector. Inspector Manuel Leal came out and wrote a correction notice with the same problems I had been pointing out: missing proper flashing around the HVAC curb, chimney flashing that had to go under stucco flashing, a cricket required at the garage to house valley, and vents that had to be properly caulked instead of smeared with caulk and pinholes left. He even noted "more corrections may follow." Without that inspection, Universal would've declared the job done and walked away. In the end, the roof is finally complete, but only because I caught mistake after mistake, documented everything with photos, emails and got the County involved. Without that, this roof would've been signed off unfinished and below standard. For 30K, I shouldn't have to climb my own roof and basically act as superintendent to make sure things are done to code. Even with all that, I still had to let some things slide just to get it over with, brand new shingles that are scratched or missing asphalt, broken pieces of shiplap that weren't damaged before this project started. I've got pictures and video of everything. At this point I just accepted it so I could move on, but it's a reminder of how sloppy this job was. Universal charges premium prices but what I got was poor workmanship, broken promises, bad communication, and misrepresentation of who was even doing the work. If you hire them, make sure everything promised is in writing, document absolutely everything, demand County inspections, and don't sign off until it's verified. [[HIGHLIGHT]]The one positive in all of this was Lily, she was professional and helpful but she's not the one out running projects in the field.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] By the time she got involved, the damage was done. He was pressured, misled, and spoken to with zero respect or care for his age or vulnerability. The contractor presented him with a $22,000 contract for 18 sheets of plywood and there's more. 10/2025 was the month the work was done. We were in desperate need of a new roof, because the company we use to service our heater and a/c, had noticed the issue of the wood problematic. We paid the average going price out there, not inflated like some other places out there. We also needed insulation so it was great to get both jobs done at once. Subsequent to the maintenance job that was done on our roof, I noticed some peeling on our bathroom ceiling; not sure if this was due to possible new leak or something else. I called Universal, asked them to check the roof to see if they could do some additional maintenance work in that area above. They came over right away ..... even in the rain .checked the area and said the roof was too wet that time to determine what was going on, with the implication that they would return once the rain stopped. They subsequently indicated that they would come out with their manager/ supervisor. This never happened! I want to be clear that we've never had any leaking of our roof.,, nor do we have one now . The only reason I wanted maintenance to be done was to PREVENT any possibility of a leakage. I understood that we have a dead flat roof and that it is old and eventually it will need to be replaced. I was under the impression, however, that with this maintenance project that we had done that we would have a few more years with our existing roof . I asked for Universal to come out again and see if they could provide additional maintenance to that small area . They refused.. only offered to apply what I paid for the maintenance towards the cost of a new roof. Clearly they are in the business of building new roofs .. not providing corrective maintenance service .. which is what they advertise on their web page . A disappointment! read more

Thankfully, they managed to not only live up to their word but also sent a Warranty certificate and came out during a rainy day to help fix whatever needed additional fixing. I would rate 0 or below stars if that would be possible! This roofer is the worst business I have ever encountered, hands down in 71 years! They installed our new roof along with ceiling insulation. First, they don't know how to tarp a roof for rainy weather. Second, to install our insulation in vaulted ceilings, they cut the plywood and then reinstalled the same 16 sheets they cut! Of course, the roof leaked and sagged where the sheets came together! We had to hire both a roofer and an insulator to fix what they had done! Don't let their endearing ways fool you because they simply don't know what they are doing! We made the mistake for paying for the entire roof and part of the insulation before we fired them. Unfortunately, they first put a Mechanics Lien on our property, then a lawsuit! Now they lie about everything using their viscous attorney. I could go on for days, why no one shouldn't use them! A few hours later I get email reports about a hard credit inquiry on my report. This company redid my roof, deck and scraped and painted my house. The roof job was adequate but they were sloppy when placing the metal finishes and left debris. When painting, there was overspray and the scraping was inadequate. No scraping debris was cleaned up. They cleaned the brushes and buckets against one of my trees and left my hose reel and barbeque splattered in paint. As far as the deck goes, it is a complete disaster. They used framing quality wood, did a horrible job of sanding. Not one of the corners were matched and, to repair it, water putty was shoved in the gaps and started washing away with the first rain. The deck had collapsed during the 2023 winter storm, was demolished and rebuilt. FEMA waved the fees for permits, but they never obtained a permit! Initially, the back deck, which is 6 ft above the ground, had gaps large enough for small children and animals to fall through. I had to tell Paco, who was supervising the job that he couldn't leave it that way and he consistently argued with me. his two nephews were working with him and PACO would leave them alone to go to other projects. Vick T, the project manager, rarely appeared, and at 24 is too young and inexperienced. When I told Vick T about the rude and condescending treatment from Paco, he replied, "He has a mind of his own." It has taken months to have an architect and engineer get a set of plans to the company, but now winter has set in and the required fixes are not done. Don't have Paco do a deck. I have read some of the glowing reviews. They are pretty hard to believe. read more
