Marcus and his crew rebuilt a century old brick wall with a new foundation and reused the old bricks, after cleaning the old grout off them. They maintained the original look of the wall while re-enforcing the grouts in-between with rebar. And they did it all within two days! With the crazy rains earlier this year, we had water leaking down into our house. The firebox bricks were also black. We consulted some general chimney sweeps and they were going to charge a lot for a temporary fix (as they are not masons). Marcus was very communicative and he was able to come out within a week of when I contacted him. They finished the work in 2.5 days. They kept everything clean by taping up plastic sheets and had all the dust filtering outside. The work is truly exceptional and the price was fair. I came across M&R Masonry online and appreciated their specialization in chimneys as that is what I needed help with the most. My chimney's spark arrestor had blown off into a neighbor's yard during some very strong Santa Ana wind events. The crown on my 1960s chimney had completely deteriorated and it was crumbling away. My chimney was vulnerable and exposed to even more damage. Marcus was able to install a brand-new concrete crown that was 4" thick with 2" overhang from the brick face. It looks GREAT! We've used our fireplace extensively over the last 25 years, burning large quantities of wood, so no wonder it began to show signs of wear and tear in the brickwork and lining. I knew that the renovation would be a big job, noisy, messy and easy to defer to next year. However, when I met Marcus to discuss it, I was impressed by his straightforward honesty and obvious expertise. The bid was fair and I felt very reassured by dealing with a well-established family-owned company as opposed to some here-today-gone-tomorrow individual; jobs like this are invasive and stressful; you want to feel you can trust the people involved and know that they will be around to take responsibility for any subsequent problems or issues. It was really impressive that Marcus showed up at 07:00 with his crew and supervised the work when he could easily have delegated it. He and his brother worked as hard as anyone on their crew and it took them all day to demo, lay brick, re-line the chimney, and put in a new damper. I've waited 6 months to post this review only because we wanted to really use the fireplace before recommending M&R. I can now say with certainty that our fireplace burns beautifully. Thank you Marcus you did a great job. We had a fireplace that was originally built in 1937. The dimensions and angles were all wrong to get a good draft. We were planing on having Marcus install a wood burning insert but he convinced us he could solve the problem by rebuilding the firebox. We held our breath and hoped for the best. Not only did he save us money, we were able to keep the wide opening and still get a great burn. We wanted a more midcentury modern feel so he raised the hearth and poured a beautiful black concrete hearth that looks like stone. We got exactly what we were looking for. We already had someone to do the decorative plaster work on the facade but Marcus had lots of good ideas and his workers were great. They got the job done quickly, always cleaned up at the end of the day. It was obvious when we met Marcus that he knew his stuff but there are so many ways things can go wrong. Marcus did a great job relining our 100 year old chimney and fireplace. He came by to meet me and see the job, took a look, asked a few questions, and gave me a reasonable price for the job. They came by at 6:30am, built a scaffold around the chimney and a platform on the roof next to it, and began to hand line the chimney with a long trowel. Marcus and his team did a fantastic job repairing and improving our brick patio. We needed a number of areas adjusted after we had the retaining wall below the patio replaced. Some of the pilasters along the edges needed to be rebuilt and others had to be made taller to meet city code. There were also a number of places where mortar had cracked that needed repointing. M&R gave us a fair price for doing the work, and they did a beautiful job. Their attention to detail was amazing. Marcus and his team are great. They repointed and rebuilt my brick front patio and it looks brand new. It was built in 1930 and hadn't been touched since then. When he first came to the house he unlike the other masons I met with he told me the right way to fix it rather than just patch it.
