Came here when my cat wouldn't eat for two days straight and was puking nonstop. Met with Dr. Johnson and she was welcoming and super nice. She explained that bloodwork and x-ray could be an option but my cat was feeling better on the third day so she just prescribed my cat some GI food to help relive his digestion and told me to come in for x-rays if things got worse. Really appreciate her honesty and not doing extra/unnecessary work that would've broke the bank. You get a free office visit if you're a new client as well which i didn't know about. The bill was under $100 for food and fluids which is great. Would definitely recommend and will be coming back! read more

I first started using Boston Veterinary Care in June, 2017, on recommendation of my Northeastern Univ. professor who takes his dog there, and after I adopted a senior rescue dog from a Long Island NY rescue league. In the intervening months, both Patches and myself love the staff at BVC who are very caring, attentive and highly professional. BVC is an outstanding facility and I love their mission of any profits supporting their affiliate rescue mission. Patches has had some on-going issues due to her age, and we have made several visits, and she always goes in the door and out the door with her tail wagging. I highly recommend BVC and take note of the very few negative views as being more of a nature of you cannot please everybody 100% of the time. read more

Communication is the main issue here. The take away from this review is be careful with communication because they don't read your intake form/notes and go beyond the scope of your given authorization. Specifics: - wait is around 20 minutes Issues: I went in to get my kitten neutered because this was the only place that fit into my schedule. Basically, my authorization form said: 1) I wanted a feline neuter, and nothing else. (Lady in front of me specifically asks for no microchipping and is told that as long as we don't check it off on the authorization form, it won't happen. Seems normal.) 2) I also checked that I wanted to be contacted before any procedures and assumed that other procedures would be something supplemental to the reason I'm there, ie- procedures related to neutering him. 3) Spoke with the front desk tech? and specifically stated I wanted a collar/neck thing in case he starts to lick the area. Listened to how it wasn't normal procedure- agreed to pay extra. I get a call an hour later that I missed because I'm driving. They call again around 20 min later. My cat's surgery is done. He looks great. Oh by the way, we microchipped him. What?! Without asking me? Without talking to me about the risks and the concerns I may have about inserting a foreign object into my baby?! Yes, I know the risks are small. But, he is my cat and if that small risk happens to him, it will affect my life much more than one of the many kittens you see. AT the very LEAST, I feel like I needed to be asked about this unnecessary procedure that isn't even related to his neutering! I think she heard the concern in my voice when I asked her to repeat what had happened since I had specifically left the microchip option unchecked. Rather than address the risks or why I would be concerned, I'm told my cat is about to wake up from anathesia and if I can't produce proof of his vaccinations, they will also give me extra shots. At this point, I am lost for words. I pull over to call my local vet to fax them the proof since I don't need my cat getting any extra stress. ---- End result- - Basically when I arrive, they don't bring me my cat. Rather, I find out 30 min later, the girls at the front desk were playing with him. That's fine, although, it might have calmed me down to see him during our discussion. To see the area where the injection was made. To see that he is indeed looking healthy, etc. - I am also told that no I can't get a collar because it's not procedure. Explain to them that I had already been told and had agreed to pay. She says she will need to check the intake. - I ask why they didn't ask or wait for my authorization for the microchipping. They say they called and just did it because they couldn't reach me. But no it is not related to the neutering. - I am visibly concerned and rather than address the risks, the nurse is like, it's better for you if he get's lost. I'm thinking... INDOOR CAT. NEVER OUTSIDE. Why? - At this point, I still don't have my cat and I'm quite miffed at her attitude and the fact that no one seemed to have read the intake notes. Rather, she's like - microchipping was on the estimate. (Why yes, on the low there was no microchipping and the high estimate included it. Was it my fault for believing your front desk that not checking it was enough? There was no place on the form to ask specifically for no chipping) - At this point, she states that while the chip is there and they can't do anything. If I don't want to pay, I can not pay and it won't be a problem. I just won't get the benefit of the chip. So? My cat has been chipped without my authorization. Has a foreign body in his body. No one is explaining to me logically the cost and benefit analysis of having this body in him. Rather, it seems it's there. There is a SMALL (which is quite big to me) risk and there is NO BENEFIT if I don't pay. Right. I escalated it. The manager came and apologized. She didn't address the lack of communication issues. Why none of the staff seemed to have read the intake form we were supposed to fill out before conducting surgery and procedures that would otherwise need our authorization... But at least she explained the higher risks of taking out the chip. The low risks of keeping it in. And the small benefit I can get because the hospital will pay for my registration for the first year. After an hour and a half? A lot of it waiting. I am out and will not return. I will happily go back to my local vet that not only cares about my babies but that listens to my concerns, keeps procedures within the scope of authority given, and explains to me the risks of anything before they do it! read more

Simply put, the entire staff is phenomenal! Right from the call to set up an appointment, I could feel that these were true animal lovers and they were genuinely concerned with my dog's health & well-being. Aside from emergency situations, they prefer for you to see the same doctor - LOVE!!! Dr. Davis introduced himself to me and promptly planted himself on the floor with Lukie for his exam... right then, I knew we made the right choice! When it was time for shots, Lukie moved up to the exam table... the vet tech gently but securely held him while the Dr. effortlessly administered the necessary shots - Lukie didn't peep! The treatment that we received that first visit has been replicated with every one following. The doctor always is always happy to answer the barrage of questions I have for him and has never rushed me out; his diagnosis always make sense and are explained thoroughly. Different treatment options are always presented, along with printed estimates. I find the prices to be reasonable, actually less expensive than what I had anticipated. Other pluses include the online Pet Portal, allowing you to access your pet's records 24/7... vaccinations, appt requests, questions, general pet health info. Wonderful place. I read all of these reviews before hand, skeptical that they were all 5 stars, but they are all true. My pup has fear aggression and they addressed it flawlessly all while giving her 4 shots. Dr. Mekler was fantastic as was the vet tech who sat on the floor with Abby during the entire visit. The Pet Portal is a wonderful tool too. Love this place and I will continue to recommend it to everyone! Not to mention the price; we got 3 shots, had a mysterious lump tested for cancer and an annual exam, all for $260.00. Can't beat that. read more

All of my three cats (two adopted from Animal Rescue League of Boston) go to Boston Veterinary Care. The oldest one is turning 13 this August and has been a loyal customer since he was 4 (when I got him). We went through a lot together. He got a cancereous lump on his rear thigh in 2006. The vets there were good with the diagnosis. They analyzed risks and laid out options for me and the cat. They were honest and didn't suggest anything unnecessary to rip me off. My old cat became a tripod due to the cancer, but he is happy and healthy. All my cats got teeth cleaning every other year. They always give me itemized estimate in advance. read more

I recently started going to Boston Veterinary Care at Animal Rescue League. My vet had moved and I was looking for new care for my 5 year old Labrador Elvis. I met Dr Breda at an outside clinic and asked her a few questions and I was very impressed and made the appointment. Elvis had several issues going on including an ear infection that had been treated, but would not not resolve, frequent urination and several episodes of hyper-salivation. It was a very good experience start to finish. First off they have parking in the city which is very convenient. Second the staff was very pleasant and my dog took to them. Third, the appointment ran on time. Fourth, Dr. Breda explained everything very clearly, let me see the ear infection through the ear scope compared to the healthy ear. She gave me treatment options in case price was a factor. Fifth, she followed up via phone and email to let me know results. This has been a very positive experience and I highly recommend. read more

I would never recommend this vet to ANYONE, not even my worst enemy. My experience there has been a complete nightmare from start to finish. I called BVC because I heard good things about the clinic and the veterinarians and I was pleased to learn online that all proceeds go to the ARL. I was not happy with my previous vet so making the switch seemed like a no brainer! I adore my dog so going somewhere where I feel comfortable is really important to me. I spoke with a girl (Kaylie, i believe) first who was super helpful and scheduled my first appointment, offering me the first free wellness exam. Everything was going great. I called a few days before my scheduled appointment because I needed to reschedule due to a work related event. I then spoke with Cory who helped move my appointment to a better day. The day of the appointment, I showed up, I was completely ignored when I walked in because the guy at the desk was typing an email (he blatantly ignored me as I stood in front of the desk just waiting to be acknowledged) THEN I was told that there was no appointment scheduled for me at all.. I asked the receptionist his name? Which was Cory.. I continued to tell him that I had spoken WITH HIM to reschedule the appointment.. not once did I get an apology, offer to be squeezed in, nothing. I was told to reschedule again, which I did. When I went back for my first visit, I waited for 25-30 minutes.. finally, I was taken into an exam room that was covered in dog hair and spoke briefly with the technician, Stephanie about a few concerns I was having with my sweet girl. Dr. Breda did a really quick exam on my dog and it felt so rushed.. which was disappointing because she was so uncomfortable and I hate seeing her in any pain or discomfort! Just when I thought it couldn't get worse, I heard Dr. Breda AND the staff talking badly about me and laughing while i was waiting in the exam room for meds to be filled. (ex. my outfit/hair and how 'annoying' I was when I arrived) and saying that my dog was ugly. FYI - I have a scruffy, senior, rescue and I saved her from awful living conditions. She might not be cute to everyone but she's perfect to me. I was shocked and really upset by what I heard. So unprofessional. I will continue to donate to ARL because I have a rescue and I truly care about the animals in the shelter but I will NEVER step foot in Boston Veterinary Care again. A friend recommended the veterinarians at ARL after I expressed some concerns about our previous vet. My girlfriend and I are first time pet owners with a 4 month old puppy, so we weren't sure if our original vet was truly not very good or we were just being paranoid new parents. ARL confirmed our concerns without us ever needing to voice them. The Vet who treated our puppy at ARL (Dr. Shipet-Ratner) looked at our pup's medical history from the other vet and immediately pointed out that two of the vaccines she was given were not advisable and certainly not necessary for such a small puppy. Then she told us that the antibiotics and cough suppressant the old vet prescribed was really not the best treatment for an upper respiratory infection. She switched the antibiotic, took her off the cough suppressant, and gave her a decongestant instead. In two days, our little puppy was feeling much better than she was after more than week on the other medicines. Dr. Shipet-Ratner did not make us feel rushed at all despite the fact that we were there during a busy time for them (5:30pm Monday). She answered all of our questions on everything from food recommendations to skin scratching to potty training. She didn't push any products, medicines, or other services on us. Also, both the vet and her assistant were extremely gentle and patient with our puppy. Then two days after our appointment the Doctor called me herself to check on our puppy. It is obvious that she and the rest of the staff at ARL really care about the pets they treat. This will definitely be our vet from now on. read more

Initially, I brought my dog to MSPCA Angell and was not pleased with them at all. They tried to use scare tactics to get more money out of me by stating that my dog had an issue that I didn't think she had. Just as a second opinion I brought her to Boston Veterinary Care and I was blown away by the personal touch that they have in comparison to the ASPCA. The doctors there are so much more on their game. They are a smaller, more intimate facility, and they really remember and care about you and your dog. The doctors genuinely care about the wellbeing of your pet and you can tell that the vet techs know their stuff, they are incredible. I cannot recommend them enough, especially for first time pet owners, they are so patient if you are a worried first time mom and have lots of questions. Fantastic place. They offer compassionate, loving care and have a top notch staff. I wrote a review of the ARL a while ago which included some of my thoughts on Boston Veterinary Care not realizing they had separate Yelp entries. My dog was adopted from ARL nearly six years ago and has had his veterinary care through BVC ever since. Prices are very reasonable for Boston and I feel like they honestly care about my dog and not my dollars. My dog *loves* the staff here, he's not afraid of them at all and actually pulls to get in the door. The staff know him by name and there's always a familiar face in the office for him to lick. Crazy huh? Who'd have thought a dog would like the vet's office?!?! The vet techs are great, as are the vets themselves, everyone is very gentle and sweet with the animals and their owners. The phone staff are very conscientious and good about faxing records promptly to kennels and following up on my questions about lab results/post anesthesia nausea concerns etc. A few months ago we were in for a check-up and while waiting a family came in to pick up their dog's ashes after he'd been put to sleep. The way the little kids were treated was one of the kindest things I've seen ever. Everyone was in tears, but the staff handled a difficult situation unbelievably well. I would like to say that years later I am still very happy with this office. My cat recently passed from terminal cancer. The doctors here showed my cat and me true kindness and support, answering all of my questions, responding to emails, helping with medications, etc. And when my little sweetie passed away, I printed up some memorial cards and sent one to the office as my way of letting them know what had happened. I immediately received a card in the mail with personal notes written from all of the staff. It was such a kind gesture. Wonderful veterinary clinic. I had 2 dogs that were patients here, one is still a patient and receiving great care. My other dog at age 14, started showing symptoms that something was wrong with his hearing and perception of things around him, and was getting worse each week. Dr. Newlin was wonderful with my dog and was open to trying a number of things to help him out. When it came time to put him down due to a probable brain tumor, Dr. Newton and the staff were very supportive and empathetic and made me feel I was truly making the best decision for my pal. I've taken my cats here 3 times now, and I couldn't be happier with the service. I recently brought in my cat for a skin condition, and the vet herself personally called me twice in the following week to see how it was clearing up and to make sure I didn't have any questions. Dr Mekler, my dog's primary vet, is both an outstanding diagnostician and compassionate friend to animals and their well-meaning (occasionally neurotic) owners. When she happens to have a day off, I've had good luck with the covering vets. Having a dog with an immune-mediated condition is not for the faint of heart, but BVC has made things much easier. read more

BVC did not disappoint! I decided to give them a try after reading all the great reviews and I couldn't be any happier with my decision. They have a "free first visit for new clients" if you show them the promo flier, which is great! I'm a first time pet owner and was super nervous for Nala's, my kitten, checkup last month. I was seen by Dr. Shophet-Ratner and she was great. She was very attentive and thorough with Nala. She answered all of my questions and gave me advice on some things to look for as Nala grows up. She even gave me specific websites and hotlines to use in case I had any other questions. The vet techs and front desk people were super nice and inviting! That helped ease the nerves tremendously. I wasn't sure how much each visit was going to cost me but the front desk person gave me a few information packets as well as a pricing sheet which is super helpful. Nala came back for a second checkup three weeks later to get a follow up shot and the vet and Dr. Shophet-Ratner handled her just fine! Dr. SR remembered Nala and saw how much longer and bigger she got (1 measley pound more lol). What's great about this location is that there is FREE parking! Thats super helpful especially with the location being right in Boston - south end. I'm so glad I picked BVC and will continue to go to them! Keep up the great work and attitude! My poor kitty cat needed to have five teeth extracted. He had some inflammation and it looked like two teeth might need to go (one we had been watching since his last cleaning..) but once the x-rays were in, it turned out more needed to come out. Dr. Shophet and Victor are a dream team! They were so caring when I brought in my cat (who really freaks out at the vet.) Dr. Shophet actually got down on the floor to show me the inflammation while letting my cat stay in his travel box (just opened the lid)! She didn't want to cause him any additional anxiety by making him get out of his box sooner than he had to. She is so caring. Victor went over every detail of what would be done before the procedure. And when I picked my cat up after the procedure was done, both Dr. Shophet and Victor met with me to review everything and make sure I understood the care my cat would need for the next few days. My cat is so much happier now that these teeth are out(!) and it's only day five after the procedure... he's definitely still healing and has several sutures that probably won't melt away for another few days...but he is perkier than ever!
