Oh my goodness--I am so glad we tried Botanico. We went for happy hour, and by the end of the night, every single one of us agreed: we're absolutely coming back. This place first caught my eye while walking through Waikīkī--the interior and exterior are both so charming and thoughtfully designed. It has that effortlessly cute, inviting feel. I also love that there's a lanai, so you can bring your furry friend, which makes it feel even more special. The staff were incredibly friendly and attentive, checking in throughout the night without ever feeling overbearing--just the right balance. For drinks, we tried the red and white sangria and the Ulu Ulu. Everything was delicious. The sangrias were perfectly balanced--not overly sweet--and we all preferred the red. The Ulu Ulu was light, refreshing, and super easy to sip (I'd definitely swap the vodka for tequila again). Next time, I already have my eye on the limoncello spritz. We ordered entirely from the happy hour menu, and it did not disappoint. The truffle fries were so good--honestly delicious with or without the truffle. The focaccia with ricotta was also great; the bread leaned more toward a sourdough texture, and while the ricotta could have used a touch more salt, it was still very enjoyable. The chicken liver mousse ended up being a total sleeper hit. We weren't sure what to expect, but it was light, smooth, and incredibly flavorful--you'd never guess it was chicken liver. We also tried the quattro formaggi pizza with local honey, which was such a fun combination. The honey was especially memorable--so fruity and flavorful, it really elevated the dish. The prosciutto zeppole wasn't everyone's favorite--the seaweed element threw a few of us off--but the texture itself was beautifully light and airy. And the star of the night: the moussaka. Wow. Perfectly cooked, rich without being heavy, and the béchamel was absolutely incredible. I genuinely wish we had ordered more--I would come back for this alone. Went here for my birthday dinner. The ambiance was on point. This restaurant was all about the vibes and aesthetic. Liset was our waitress. Great service. Very nice and attentive. Great menu selection. Lots of options. Got the White Wine Steamed Mussels $20. The mussels and sauce were delicious. I didn't understand the French fires with served with it. I thought bread would've been better with it to soak up the sauce. Your meal does come work free complementary bread that you could use. Got Vongole Bianco as my main dish. Very good. Spaghetti cooked perfectly. Thought it wasn't going to be enough food by it was perfect. The Braised Beef Cheek was good but the portion size was on the smaller size. Came in here for the Happy Hour and was pleasantly surprised. I love the interior design of this restaurant. I will say sometimes the downstairs food court can bring up a smell so we decided to sit at the bar instead of by the window (not their fault) but if you're sensitive to smells it can affect you some what. Pricing is pretty good for drinks & food. Also found out they will be updating their menu within a week or two so it's worth to check it out again. Botanico is such a vibe. The ambiance alone makes you want to linger -- gorgeous decor, warm lighting, and that dreamy Mediterranean energy. The food absolutely delivers too. Fresh, perfectly cooked pasta, beautiful seafood, and flavors that feel bright and balanced. The Ocean Grill Plate was a standout, and the beet + cauliflower hummus was so good we were scraping the plate. Sangria? Dangerous in the best way. I think we've found a new favorite restaurant! The five of us just loved everything about our meal last night. I had the beet and cauliflower hummus appetizer (refreshing, tasty, just lovely), Vongole (clam) pasta with broccoli and garlic white wine sauce (I love clam pasta, and there's is one of the best - the pasta tasted freshly made, so soft), limoncello spritz (refreshing, nice balance to my meal) and some of the Basque cheesecake (so good, wonderfully subtly sweet - loved it). My friends got seafood pasta, carbonara, and tagliata (rare beef with greens) - everything looked so good and we were all happily impressed. The restaurant is located at the Waikiki Shopping Plaza ground floor with validated parking. We visited Uramon, the speakeasy area, in the back with our friends. The area is laid back, intimate with Vinyl music playing. There is a wide range of cocktails and wine available. You can also order food from the restaurant. The service was attentive and the manager stopped by to check on us a few times. Our party ordered a range of dishes but our favorite was the vongole pasta. Moussaka was also delicious. We went there for happy hour (2-6 pm at the bar or lanai), and it was already pretty busy. There was only one bartender working while the rest of the staff seemed occupied elsewhere in the restaurant, so we ended up waiting a while for menus, drinks, and even the check at the end. They also messed up my check by charging my friend's order to my credit card, but thankfully it was voided right away--whew! The pricing was reasonable, especially the $6 house wine, which was surprisingly good. For food, I ordered the Caramelized Chicken Liver Mousse and the Prosciutto Zeppole. The liver mousse tasted good, but it was a bit too fluffy and heavy for my liking. The zeppole, unfortunately, was bland and greasy. I did enjoy the Funghi & Pancetta Pinsa that my friend ordered--it had a flavorful tomato sauce and was the standout dish for me. She also tried the Prosecco Flight, which was fun in concept, but having three glasses of bubbles served all at once felt like too much too soon, especially since they started to warm up. Overall, it was an interesting experience, but I'm not sure I'd come back for dinner. The inside is stunning! Absolutely beautiful. We had a party of 7, and not one of us said we would be back. And that's a bummer. The service was just above being a problem. We seemed like an inconvenience, and I hate that. Drinks were refilled by someone else, and our server came by the bare minimum. She was mildly rude when we asked if appetizers on the other side of the menu could be ordered. The food wasn't good. Started with plantation tea that was so weak it tasted like flavored water. I got the side fruits salad, which was odd, but mostly enjoyable. It had cucumbers, olives, watermelon, blueberries and grapes. And candies nuts that were so bitter, like the sugar had been burnt. Botanico Waikiki is officially opening on 10/30. We went to a special preview. Executive Chef Yuta "Tama" Tamano masterfully weaves together Italian and Mediterranean flavors in this latest of the Zetton Hawaii Group restaurants (I believe it is the 12th!). The concept they are going for is bringing urban Italy into the heart of Waikiki. It's elegant but not stuck up kine elegant. I can see it working for casual dining, as well as special occasions. APPETIZERS: Lava Funghi & Salsiccia (Charcoal battered portobello mushrooms stuffed with jet black fritto and Italian herb sausage over arrabiata sauce). I really enjoyed this dish and would order it again. Moussaka with Pinsa Bread (Greek style eggplant and potato gratin with creamy meat sauce and pinsa). I can't think of any other places that serve up moussaka so this is a welcome addition to the local food scene! I loved the homestyle warmth of this dish. Manoa Vegetable Terrine (Layered green veggie terrine with Potato Vichyssoise sauce). I loved this! It's wrapped with cabbage and was a symphony of green flavors. Would definitely order this again. PASTA: Spaghetti Pescatore (Seafood spaghetti with shrimp, clams, scallops in a rich tomato anchovy fennel sauce). Chef Tama highly recommended this dish. Pasta was al dente, sauce was flavorful and the seafood cooked perfectly. Get this. Fettuccine Carbonara with housemade Pancetta (Carbonara, pancetta, egg yolk, pecorino romano cheese and black pepper). Anything bacon and I'm there! This was a sinfully rich dish. Only criticism was the sauce seemed a bit too thick. ENTREE: Chef's Steak of the Day. My friend ordered this but steak was delicious. I was intrigued by the aligot potatoes. A traditional French mashed potato blended with cheese, cream, butter and garlic. It's supposed to be a cross between mashed potatoes and fondue! DESSERT: Basque Cheesecake. A little different take on basque cheesecake cos they brulee the top. This is definitely not like dense NY cheesecake, so considered yourself warned. This cheesecake is very fluffy and light. DRINKS: Luke the bartender said he is going to be making his own Limoncello, hopefully by the first week of December. I am super looking forward to that! OVERALL: I am so excited to have another Italian/Mediterranean food option, especially with Chef Tama at the helm. Go check it out! I'm excited about the lunch offerings (pasta and pinsa). PARKING: 3-hour validated parking in the Waikiki Parking Plaza. Note: Lunch service and Happy Hour offerings will be available sometime in mid-November. Walked by this new place a while back and finally came in today for happy hour. Great food at really good prices. The focaccia and ricotta was next-level delicious, and the staff were super cool. One small suggestion would be to make the happy hour draft offerings a little clearer, as I was hoping the draft IPA might be included. Highly recommend stopping by this Italian Mediterranean fusion restaurant. This restaurant had fine dining presentations, without the insane fine dining prices. For appetizers, we tried the Manoa vegetable terrine (stunning presentation, and a great way to get in more fiber on your vacation), Lava fungi & salsiccia (absolutely delicious), beet and cauliflower hummus. I was very excited to try this place, as I love Italian and this place just opened in October. The atmosphere inside is super cute and I like the decor. The bartender was friendly as well. I liked the house red wine, and my friends liked their cocktails (except the martinis come in a glass where they are only filled a quarter of the way so they're pretty small). However, food wise, this is probably my least favorite Italian that I've tried in Honolulu. The noodles in my carbonara were kind of mushy and the flavor was pretty average. First off, they do validated parking for 3 hours in the Waikiki Shopping plaza which is great, but minimum spend of $30 to get the validation. Made reservations for lunch just in case it was busy, but didn't really need a res, saw a lot of walk-ins. Sat down and got water and menus right away. Service is great, met the manager/owner (not sure) as well and he explained a lot of the ingredients and items on the menu. Was really bummed out that they couldn't service pizza this day because they ran out of their special dough to make the pizza, said it would come in 2 days later. We wanted to try some items on the dinner menu for lunch, asked if we could order from dinner menu and they said no because they didn't finish prepping the ingredients yet. so we came for lunch, no pizza, so that's half of the lunch menu we couldn't order on. ended up just with focaccia bread and Ricotta cream cheese and a pasta. All in all, food is great when they are in stock.. service is great! and validated Parking! big win. Botanico is located in Waikiki and is fairly easy to get to, though parking does require a longer walk than expected. From parking, you need to take escalators and elevators, then exit the building and walk along the sidewalk to enter the restaurant. Not a huge issue, but something to be aware of. On our first visit for dinner, we were greeted promptly and seated quickly. The host and staff were friendly and professional. Our server was knowledgeable about the menu and made recommendations. As expected for Waikiki, there is a noticeable push toward alcohol, which is understandable. We ordered two drinks, an espresso martini and a Grey Goose vodka martini. Both were made competently. Nothing wrong with them, but nothing memorable either. The best part of the meal was the appetizers. The whole wheat focaccia with ricotta was excellent and easily the standout item of the night. We also ordered a mushroom stuffed appetizer, which was very good as well. The Prosciutto Zeppole were where things became confusing. While the dough itself was fine, they include seaweed as part of the preparation, which was an unexpected flavor choice and did not work for us. It felt out of place for what is traditionally a very straightforward Italian item. For my main, I ordered a pizza topped with arugula and prosciutto. The flavor was okay, but the execution was poor. It was overloaded with toppings to the point that it could not be picked up or eaten properly. Everything slid off, forcing it to be eaten in pieces. The crust was also soft and somewhat soggy. My wife ordered a pasta dish and commented that it was just okay. Overall, dinner was not a complete disappointment, but it did not live up to the marketing and hype. Botanico presents itself as Italian, but in reality it is Italian inspired rather than Italian. I am Italian, grew up with Italian food, and am very particular about it. None of the dishes we had would be considered traditional Italian. This does not mean the food is bad, but it is clearly aimed at a specific clientele. The restaurant group is Japan based, the chef is Japanese, and the flavors are clearly designed for a Waikiki tourist audience, particularly Japanese tourists familiar with this style of fusion. Japanese influenced Italian fusion simply does not work for those accustomed to traditional Italian flavors. The pastas leaned noticeably sweet, and items like zeppole with seaweed do not align with Italian or even standard American Italian expectations. That is fine if that is the intent, but the presentation and marketing should be more transparent. We gave Botanico a second chance at lunch, and unfortunately that experience was worse. We were seated immediately and both ordered pasta. My wife ordered the Carbonara, and I ordered the Amatriciana. Both dishes were overloaded with sauce, noticeably sweet, and the noodles were stuck together. My wife's carbonara had the same issue, far too saucy and poorly executed. We ordered the focaccia again, but it arrived with nothing. No ricotta, no butter, nothing. After waiting, we flagged down our server. She acknowledged that ricotta normally comes with it but did not bring it out initially. She returned with butter only, still missing the ricotta. After more time, she brought the ricotta separately and said she had to look for it. The server seemed unfamiliar with the menu and inattentive overall. When leaving, the server asked about my untouched pasta. I explained politely that it was not to my liking due to the sweetness and preparation style, not because anything was wrong. She acknowledged that. Bottom line: The staff are generally polite, and the focaccia is genuinely very good. However, Botanico is essentially a Japanese restaurant presenting itself as Italian, aimed at a tourist clientele. Prices are high for what you get, and execution was inconsistent, especially at lunch. If you are there for drinks, happy hour, or enjoy Italian Japanese fusion, you may like it. If you are expecting traditional Italian food, this is not the place. We will not be returning. read more

I got a 4 cheese pizza and it came without any sauce and the server told me "that's how it comes" which insane if you want to call that pizza. Well, I should have known not to come to a new restaurant even if the same owners have my favorite restaurant Zigu. We were greeted well by the manager I assume, waitress was nice and prompt, but the menu only had half the items available. Literally half on an already minimal lunch menu. Nothing really looked great to be honest but we had reservations here and didn't want to just walk out when we found out they only had 50% of their menu. Ordered the focaccia and ricotta as the starter and it was ok. Could have used more flavor or crunchy salt. I ordered the cream pasta which was basically clam chowder with shell pasta. It was ok but the pasta was as mushy as the potatoes. Not even Al dente in the American version and definitely not as an Italian. Flavor was ok but even if they cooked the pasta perfectly, it didn't have much depth and I would not order it again. My husband got the genovese pesto and it was a beautiful looking dish but tasted quite odd with the green beans being so forward tasting. I didn't even taste any pine nuts or garlic. I was really glad I didn't order it. My husband said it was ok but as the ingredients are so cheap, not worth $24. The two lunch plates also came out 5 minutes in between so I just sat looking at my plate while waiting for my husbands food to come out. The restaurant was definitely not busy at all. Wow, my only regret is that we didn't find this earlier so we could have done it again. Best meal we have had during our 10 day stay. Ambiance was about as good as you can get. We ate just inside, off the patio and felt like it was the best seat in the house. To be honest tho - they all look like the best seat in the house. Just relax, order a bottle of wine and settle in. They have a pretty good wine list and you don't have to go spendy. They have a house carafe, but we had the $45 merlot and it did the job just fine. We ordered the margharita pizza as an appetizer and thought it was one of the best bites we've had this trip. Crust was great. Sauce was great. The basil is served whole leaf which looks great and avoids that charing, but a chiffonade would have spread the love a little for every bite. Who cares, I'd order it again in a second. We then decided to split a couple pastas. We had the bolognese and the carbonara. They were both two of the best expressions of those I've had. Crazy good. My only nit would have been to leave off what may have been shallots in the sauce which isn't on the menu and worked fine (we ate every scrap) but confused the palate a bit because it looked just like the guanciale or whatever they use. The carbonara was outstanding and we ate every bite. Finally, the service was outstanding. They really worked as a team. Attentive but not pushy or hovering. Our server was Beighlee and she was perfect. Always had water, food came out at the right times, checked in throughout the meal (as did about 4 others) but in just the right way ... which was the icing on the experience. This is a solid 5 out of 5 and I hope they have the rating they deserve when I come back this spring. read more
