The mother land of working machines. 16 Working Bottle Machines. That's right. Working Machines! Each machine is able to take all types of returnables, even those without a deposit. If it can read the label, it will take it. There are several places around Portlandia that are ........... less than great. (122nd/Powell) (39th/Powell) They are all an assault on all your senses! That fact is constant no matter which recycling center you go to. They are all gross on some level. I want it to be quick, so I can go home and wash my hands. "Bottle Drop" has a good handwashing sink area, with a hand air dryer. The bathroom was fairly clean as well. They have an attendant that will help you out and even count up to 50 returnables for you. There is also a Drop Off Box, If you set up an account, you can drop off your returnables and they will count your returnables for you and deposit the money onto a Debt Card account with "Bottle Drop". I did about 345 returnables in less than 15 minutes. It was awesome. As opposed to the half hour I spent the day before at 122nd. Ave. and only got about 30 cans through. I was on the only working machine. Problem was that you had to keep putting the same can through about two dozen times before it would accept it. (If I come across sounding bitter over my experience yesterday, @ 122nd. Ave. it's because I am!) Bottle Drop, you are an oasis!

Great first time experience. Sure, it's a few miles from home and not nearly as close as my local retailer like Fred Meyer but the machines here are super modern and efficient. I no longer have to deal with those Can't-do machines that are always giving me problems when I try to get my money back from the deposits. Everything is taken care of right there, two quick stops. The machines that count your returnables, then a machine to give you your cash or deposit it on your account. And, for a small fee, you can use the 24-hour drop off machine. The customer service was patient, friendly and helpful.

This place is absolutely unsavory. Outside is dirty and littered with homeless people not just depositing but "hanging out." There is also broken glass everywhere. The inside smells like a bum's armpit. Standing in line for an hour doesn't help with the smell. I'll just give away my deposits next time. Yuck.

I heard about Bottle Drop from my Dad in Eugene. A while back they took out all the bottle returns at a number of Eugene grocery stores and installed a Bottle Drop on the west side of town. My first experience there was awesome. We were in. We were out. We had our cash. Nice. So I thought I'd check out the local Bottle Drop on Glisan and 122nd. It's located all the way back in the far corner of the shopping center. I've been here twice now. The first time, there was quite a long line to use a machine, even with the many available. Although there was a wait, it worked very smoothly. The machines work by scanning the bottle/can and then sending it down a conveyor belt where it gets crushed somewhere else. So you don't have jammed machines or have to have someone come unlock the damn thing to shake it down a little bit. I went again this weekend and arrived shortly after they opened, about 9:15. I still had to wait, but not as long. It's in that part of town where people really value their cans and also use a lot of them, if you know what I mean. This review would easily be 5 stars if the place wasn't so crowded. What I really like is that they have an attendant there to hand count your cans and bottles that the machine won't take. The machines take 99% of them, but if you have specialty bottles or something, then you can still get them counted for in a short amount of time. Then you just head to the machine, scan your tickets, and it spits out your money. They have an account option, but I'm not fully sure how that works. I just take my money and run!

Depending on when you're there, it's ok. The guards are pretty nice, and keep everyone in line.

I arrive at the location and both gates are open and sign posted in front reads the same hours. So wouldn't a normal person believe the business was open ???? I wasn't the only one that thought this way yet I get there and I'm very rudely told they close at 4:30 and argued with me saying he had no control over what their business sign says or what their phone recording says because according to him both sign in front and phone recording are things the business doesn't control. I'm sorry but I don't think so, you hand painted homemade sign isn't controlled by your business....I call bullshit. I wish I could post a picture to show proof of what I'm saying. A homeless man had seen the same signs on separate visits to the business so he walked over 2 hours to get there in time only to be rudely turned away as well. Oh and it's very bad business to imply that a customer is an idiot because the 2 forms of contact said close at 5:30 but yet the one place not checked said 4:30. My point is 2 out of 3 say one thing and the other a different thing so what are you supposed to take is gospel? I figured the phone recording must be correct but then again I guess I'm just too stupid to think the information a business gives out could possibly be correct.......

I wanted to find someplace that wasn't going to just landfill the stuff. The number Yelp was originally showing was just a number which forwarded to Total Reclaim's Seattle facility but, Portland's Metro Recycling hot-line had the latest info. on Total Reclaim's Portland location. I dropped my Styrofoam at Total Reclaim's drop-off site at 5805 NE Columbia Blvd, two blocks west of NE 60th, and on the north side of Columbia Blvd. Their local phone number is 503-281-1899. Total Reclaim, Inc. accepts all sorts of stuff (computers, home and office electronics, TVs, stereo gear, even some appliances, you name it!) and it all gets 'reclaimed' so none of it ends up in any landfills. So, you can do-the-right-thing, and get rid of that garage full of electronics, appliances, plastics, styrofoam, and fluorescents, all with a short trip to NE Columbia Blvd.!

Enter Total Reclaim: The easy eco-friendly alternative to ditching your unconventional recyclables at the dump. I stuffed my trunk and back seat full of Styrofoam blocks, and made a quick trip over to Total Reclaim. For a mere $5 I was finally rid of a ridiculous amount Styrofoam. $5 is a clear bargain compared to the $10 minimum charge at the dump. And, in my book, recycling trumps wastefulness any day.

This last Monday we had our garbage out as per usual on the curb. That afternoon we realized our garbage bin had not been picked up. We called the customer service who told us they could come by in the next days but that they would have to charge us a fee. We refused this because we shouldn't have to pay an extra fee for something that they failed to do. We sent a detailed email about the matter to the customer service email address but again got a voicemail telling us we would have to pay extra for a new pickup and denying that they had failed to pick up our garbage in the first place. At this stage we sent an email with photographic proof that our garbage had not been picked up and we have not heard from them since. The lack of any desire to solve an issue that they are responsible for creating, the implication that we are somehow wrong about the issue at hand (I think I know a full container of garbage when I see one) and the rigidity in trying to make us pay more for a service we have already paid for is unacceptable.
