Appalling customer service. We have recently moved to a new address and have had to change to Arrow Sanitaryfor our garbage collection. This last Monday we had our garbage out as per usual on the curb. That afternoon we realized our garbage bin had not been picked up. We called the customer service who told us they could come by in the next days but that they would have to charge us a fee. We refused this because we shouldn't have to pay an extra fee for something that they failed to do. We sent a detailed email about the matter to the customer service email address but again got a voicemail telling us we would have to pay extra for a new pickup and denying that they had failed to pick up our garbage in the first place. At this stage we sent an email with photographic proof that our garbage had not been picked up and we have not heard from them since. The lack of any desire to solve an issue that they are responsible for creating, the implication that we are somehow wrong about the issue at hand (I think I know a full container of garbage when I see one) and the rigidity in trying to make us pay more for a service we have already paid for is unacceptable. read more

They have continued to miss picking up our recycling and sometimes trash. We have to call on a weekly basis. We place out the recycling and garbage the night before pickup. When we call, they say the driver says the bins are not out. This Friday they picked up the trash but not the recycling even though both were out. When we called, they said that we were lying that our bin was out. The customer service person Valerie Simmons admitted she is not good with customer service. I asked her if I was supposed to call the city and complain or leave trash on the street and she told me she wasn't going to talk to me if I was abusive toward her. I just want a solution so that we can reliably have our trash and recycling picked up every week. I have to agree with previous customers when they say the service is getting bad! Been using Arrow since 2008, no big issues. But last week didn't pick up my compost bin, along with others. They claimed route change, whatever that means. This week, now they are claiming recyclable paper bags can't go in the compost. I would use the paper bags so the food from making the bin nasty, done this for years, but now no paper bags. Only food and yard debris. Aren't paper bags made from the trees? Went to the website but no mention of paper bags. Never had issues before!!! read more

Edit: Update 2024: This company just keeps getting worse. Their incompetence borders on criminal abuse. They don't give a flying F about customer service or satisfaction since it's a monopoly and they're the only game in town. They refuse disability accommodations too. They keep raising their prices and they don't do their jobs right. ---------------------- OP from 2019: I hate mailers and junk mail, it's just wasteful tree-killing trash imo. Awhile back when they changed the pickup days I got confused about which week was which so I went online to suss out my neighborhood calendar. Couldn't find it. Called them to get the info and the person on the phone berated me: "We sent out a mailer about your calendar, you should have stuck it to your fridge". WTH. So this trash company sends me trash and expects me to display it prominently in my home? I asked why it wasn't listed online so they didn't even have to make more trash and kill more trees and waste more precious resources, manpower, and gas to get it to homes and they said: ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ !! And the person on the phone couldn't even tell me. They told me to keep putting out both recycling and trash every week and pay attention to which ones got picked up. Only problem with that is I live downtown and if the cans are outside too much they get overrun by people and rats. Then Arrow either won't pick up at all, or they charge me extra since the bags are outside the bins and open. If this company wasn't a monopoly their customer service would have bankrupted the business years ago. Total pain in the ass to deal with on any issue. It's a racket. Plus the guys who pick up regularly spew trash, compost, and glass all over from being careless with the bins, and they never pick it up. I don't even know how many times I've had to sweep broken glass out of the street and pick up crap they drop. I get it's a gross hard job but if you can't take pride in your work and do it right you shouldn't be doing it at all. I would quit my service if I could. These guys suck. read more

I called this company to open a service for my second own house. The woman on the phone demanded that I pay the bill for my first own house, although this bill was included in the automatic payment. I said that the bill will be calculated automatically at the end of the month. I objected and asked for a manager. They connected a manager and this woman also began to demand that I pay the bill now, although it was included in the automatic payment. In the end, they did not open the service for my second own house. And said that if you do not pay the bill, the service for the first house will be removed. I demand that they reconsider or change the people working on the phone. read more

Christina is who I usually try to only deal with for my sanitation needs since my experiences prior were so more down then up and as soon as I came across Christina, she was very helpful, very thorough and her communication efforts are amazing, and just a pleasant person over the phone in which I really appreciate the continuity from start to finish when it comes to the customer and the customer as a whole. In a typical monopoly situation where you have no other options, NO REFUND is given when they are unable, or choose not, to pick up green waste/yard debris/food scraps, but they WILL charge extra if you ever have more than you bin capacity - like when all the leaves start falling from the trees. I get that service was cancelled when there was snow. Now they are in 'make up' mode and will not pick up this week. It will be 3 weeks between pickups and the food scraps are now rotting in the can, and needless to say, STINK. When asked if they will credit the 2 pickups, or even 1 for this month - NO. read more

Their payment reminders and process are a joke. Emails go to spam in gmail without warning so make sure on a new account you are searching for emails from Oregon paper fiber (not Arrow Sanitary as that will not work), phone calls they claim happened did not go through, when their portal says you are paid up with no amount due, that is inaccurate, they acknowledge it happens, but is not their fault - you will have to pay for any issues and the portal will not reflect the reality. I wish they just didn't have a portal if the green $0.00 is inaccurate and a false sense of security. Imagine your credit card says no balance due then you get late fees and interest that is only communicated through the postal service - would you be frustrated especially if the company did not take responsibility and you still had to pay the fees? This is what we get when competition does not exist though. We should have 2 garbage company options - even internet has that...par for the course I guess. read more

In the City of Portlanda, garbage collecting is a monopoly designated by neighborhood. In da 'hood all your garbage, recycling and compost are belong to them. So theoretically there is no reason for Yelp reviewing because customers have no choice. This business also does offer commercial, drop box and specialty collecting stuff services across the city. This review is not about that. The employee at his own expense brings a supply of dog biscuits to befriend dogs on the route. Dogs hate mail carriers, package deliverers, door to door nonprofit slalespersons and trash pickerupers. They are protecting their companions and the companion land borders. Trash trucks make a lot of noise, smells, sometimes at off hours, all of which are an anathema to dog animals. This individual is out to reverse that pattern, one dog at a time. The individual is probably breaking every, every, every rule in every, every book. But if more businesses made breaking rules to provide world class customer service, even delight, a priority, the world would be a better place. So hey Arrow, be awesome, supply every pickeruper with dog treats! read more

A company with integrity, Arrow Sanitation Service. On Friday, Oct. 8, one of their trucks struck and pulled down our telephone/internet service line. The driver could have just driven on but he did not. He stayed on scene and helped me reattach the line to the house. The fiber optic line was damaged and we had no service so he called his office and a supervisor came out to take a report. The supervisor, Eric, called Century Link to report the problem and told them his company would pay for the repair. He checked back with me on Monday to check on the status of the repair. That is how a company with integrity operates. read more

after skipping our house on 4 ocassions, we had an incident with our tree in the front by the street. in the 3 years we have used this service not one of their drivers has ever damaged our tree. the 4x we had to call were because of the compost pick up guy not coming at all. we reported him to the courteous staff repeatedly. I suspect he was miffed that we called him out for crappy service. last week he came and in the process of lifting the compost bin, pulled his lever up and down several times to get the compost material into his truck. it seemed stuck. so rather than get out of the truck he kept at it until a 10' limb of our tree was on the ground, ripped off violently by his mechanical arms. I called. the staff was courteous. said they would have someone call. a supervisor called 1 week latrer. he said he was sorry but stuff happens and the tree would be just fine. I asked if he was an arborist and did he know for a fact that the tree would indeed be OK. rather than answer the question he said "I don't want to go there. is that what we're doing here? being condescending?"!! it seemed a legitimate question to me. I could tell him his car engine would last 500k miles....but I am not a mechanic and know nothing about car engines. just as he knows nothing about trees. and what can we do about it? not a damn thing. frustrating. no wonder these guys get only 2 stars. that seems generous. we got no compensation or any offer to have a professional look at our rare specimen tree to make sure it could be saved. if this weren't a monopoly these guys would surely be out of business. read more

Three times in a row, Arrow skipped my house. Since garbage is collected only every other week, that means six weeks with no service. Every time I call, they try to blame me for not setting things out. I set them out Monday afternoon for Tuesday morning pickup. Also, recycling and compost were picked up. Not happy w service or ease of contacting them. I know this is controlled by the city, but! Website is confusing & email notice w a web link--unlike w most co's where the link takes you right to the spot--theirs just takes you to web page which is not very user friendly or intuitive. W the 3 co names, that makes it confusing & I do not appreciate their lack of consideration for our time. They could fix their kinks in emails so it goes right to billing or service issues or whatever the email is about. I do not generate much track of any of the types. So I put cans out about 1x/ mo usually when my garbage pick up is scheduled. But the few times when I do put out the cans, sometimes they have not been picked up. They just changed our pick up date from Mon to Fri at beginning of mo. This time I have a full can of compost & wanted it emptied because I've got lots more weeds to pull & shrubs to trim. But for some reason they didn't collect the 2 compost cans on our lot (6 units on 1 deep lot). I didn't notice it until after hours. Had to hunt up # to call & left a message over the weekend which apparently was ignored. Finally called Wed & they were supposed to pick up today. But she couldn't order pick up for both cans--not sure which neighbor the other belongs to. & I was just out there @ 2:30 pm to check. Not picked up yet. So if they do come it will be a waste of time! Since regular pick up is tomorrow. But I wanted this emptied so I could put more it tomorrow! They need to be more user friendly. btw I spend 15 min on the phone yesterday to arrange for the pickup today that hasn't happened. They should have an easy automated system to report missed pickup & request make up pickup. When they mess up, we should not have to waste our time trying to correct it! I will say most people I have talked to have been courteous. But very frustrating their rigid rules that they couldn't just note to pick up both cans they missed. Their bins aren't big enough for our building and our management company won't to pay for additional pickup, so instead of having an adult conversation Arrow is trying to force the issue by utterly trashing our garbage room every time they do a pickup. This has been going on for a year. Twice they blocked the door with the bins so no one could take out the trash for a week. They dumped so much garbage all over the floor this week we still can't get in. They leave the bins askew in the middle of the room so we can't get by to put trash in. A while ago, they dumped our trash all over the street and left it, and someone 3 blocks away found all our old mail spread over her lawn by the same person who broke into her car. The joke's on Arrow, because our management company is just as irresponsible and childish as they are and doesn't care. This is Portland at its finest. read more

Been in the nghd they cover for over a year and the pick up guys are pretty friendly and the customer service folks are great to talk with. They do a good job, I never find spilled items or left overs that fall out of the buckets. I am knocking 1 star as today I watched the compost pick up guy come by and pick up the big bin but left the medium sized garbage can marked compost all over it. I've used this a dozen times over the past year with no issue but I know why he skipped...he was eating his breakfast. Just didn't want to get out and lift it up. I flagged him down to come back and we took care of it but felt I got a good amount of attitude from someone not doing his job. By the way I do find it ridiculous that someone 1 starred them for picking up trash every 2 weeks when it is a city wide ordinance that they have absolutely no control over. I'm super disappointed by the only option I have. Arrow actually went onto my private land into a semi secure area to reclaim their cans without letting me know; apparently the details of the home ownership change were not clear to them -- why not ask the city they have a fat contract with about property changes when in doubt?? I came back from a trip, and the cans were just gone from my side yard. I actually thought Reed College students were pulling a prank and/or the cans were stolen (why someone would do this, I have no idea). I thought of calling the Police but decided to wait through the weekend to investigate more; I ended up calling Arrow and listened to a half-asleep person explain without apology that they in fact did reclaim the canisters and didn't care if it was private property or a semi-secure area stating: it was their property and they had rights to trespass to get it. And not even a simple note on the door, at the very least. Note: even if it wasn't private land and wasn't semi-secure, don't you think they should have at least left a standard Arrow note explaining what they did? To everyone out there: it is PDX and so many of you want to be off-grid, self-sufficient, self-reliant. So I say: JUST DO IT. Don't use this monopoly. Load your stuff up once a week (remember they only do it every OTHER week -- huh?!) and go to recycling and the dump -- heck you'll meet your neighbors that way. Liars! It's too bad we're stuck with them in Multnomah County and have no other choice. Costs go up and service goes down. They used to pick up garbage every week. Now it's once every other week. That isn't always enough when things happen. I called in February because we had some illegal dumping (neighbor witnessed it and let me know) and an extra bin was left in front of our house and we were charged for it. They did reverse the charge and told me to put a "no extras" on our account. The way the woman explained it was that all the lids had to close completely or they wouldn't pick up the bin unless notified by 5pm the day before that the bin wasn't closing all the way. I was also told that I wouldn't be charged if the bin lid didn't close all the way if I did notify them on time and if I didn't notify them on time the bin wouldn't be picked up at all but I could call and the next pick up date they would pick up that bin and an extra at no charge to make up for not picking up the bins the time before. I called today because I have some bulky things in the garbage bin and the lid wasn't going to close completely. I also have an extra bag (which I was told in February I wouldn't be charged for) to go out that I would rather not have around here for another two or more weeks. Today the woman that answered the phone told me that if the bin didn't close I would be charged an extra $5.50 for overloading the bin (the extra items aren't heavy so it's no heavier than any other pick up and it's not like they actually lift the bins themselves anyway, there's a machine for that!). So I told her I would put them separately and she informed me that it would be an additional charge for that, too. The complete opposite of what I was told in February. So my bin is full, the lid is closed and I have to keep an extra bag here for another two, maybe four weeks, before it might fit in the bin to go. And the price just went up to boot. All the garbage people have to do it move the bin a bit so the arm catches it. It's not like they're lifting the bins like the "old" days but the price goes up and service goes down. And really tired of them just shoving the bins back in the general direction of where they started when they're empty, although we have guidelines we have to follow when putting the bins out, and not worrying if they stay upright or even out of the street. I don't need or want, at my age, to be picking up bins that have fallen over because the people shoving them back after being emptied can't take the time to at least make sure they stay upright. And no point in complaining because everyone you talk to in "customer service" (if you actually want to call it that although they aren't very customer oriented) has a different answer and basically you get a non-sincere apology but the problem isn't fixed, probably not even addressed. If there was another option in Multnomah County I would change in a heartbeat! read more

This is home video surveillance of how mandated trash service through City of Portland, Oregon Bureau of Planning and Sustainability Waste Connections/Arrow Sanitary manages their customer accounts! The video also shows the wind blowing open the bin which we get as customers charged $5 per open bin. We have called and spoken with them regarding people rummaging through the bins looking for cans and leaving the bin open as well as the wind and asked about strapping the lid shut.
