As far as dumps go this one is pretty deluxe. Really clean (I know that seems unlikely--and indeed this doesn't include smells), and the staff here are super friendly and helpful. You drive up on a scale and they weigh your vehicle, then you drive into a massive building and dump your junk. They reweigh your vehicle and charge you based on the weight of crap you threw out. This isn't a "landfill". It's a processing station. From what I've seen watching their videos, Portland's solid waste is trucked out into the high desert somewhere and buried in a landfill. This transfer station works to pull out all of the recyclables before that happens. Remember to cover your load. read more

As a remodeler I go here all the time and I appreciate just about everything this place has to offer - it's usually an efficient operation and my visits are painless. This review is really only to address the poor service of one employee - Charles (older, Black male) - who was working at my last visit. I pulled my vehicle and trailer quite far into the public entrance and waited a few minutes for someone to approach (there was no one visible). After a few minutes I looked around and to my left saw Charles sitting down in a chair - he looked to be texting on his phone. I yelled out "hello?" and he ever-so-slowly came over and proceeded to start the process (I had paperwork) so slowly without a greeting and in such a disinterested manner that I wondered if he had fallen asleep standing up. He turned a quick paperwork collection and inspection into a painfully long process where he barely moved. Felt like he was paying me back for disturbing his slumber. You got trash? They'll take it! I was unloading the storage unit from hell, and needed to dump about two full carloads of crap. As I filled up the back of my SUV, I came to the realization that I had no idea where I could actually take it. This wouldn't be the same as sneaking a coffee cup or fast food bag into a business's trashcan. I needed somebody who could deal with quantity. A quick Yelp search proved that I'd need to drive to Metro Central Transfer Station! Off Front Street and near the St John Bridge, this place is actually pretty cool, from a logistical standpoint. You go in and they weigh your vehicle. You dump your stuff, and when you leave they weigh you again for the difference. Then they swipe your credit card and you're on your way! It was much faster than I had anticipated, and considering it's literally a dump, it wasn't nearly as gross as I had expected. They have a minimum of like $30, which is what I paid on both of my trips. They do offer some recycling options, and if you sort your stuff, they give you a nominal discount. If you want to make your trip to the dump even more fun, I suggest playing a game where you try and throw your stuff over the top of the pile. It's like King of the Mountain for junk. Maybe I'm just easily entertained... One last thing. A super hot dude was staring me up and down and smiling as I was unloading my car. Yard debris? Do not mix your load because you will pay the rate for the highest priced material for the entire load. Just keep a yard debris load entirely yard debris and it is reasonable. read more

I feel a little silly reviewing a city dump, but... This place is just super convenient. Our dog has decided that sofas cannot live longer than a few months, so we went here yesterday with a huge truckload of ruined furniture. a.) they take cards b.) they are open till 5:00pm on Sundays c.) it was only $30 for the huge load we brought d.) you get to chuck things carelessly off a truck onto a giant pile, and it's pretty fun. e.) the people who work here are all really nice and helpful People go to the dump out of necessity, and they will go to this place whether I leave a good review, a bad review, or no review. I hadn't been back to the Metro Recycling center for a good many years in protest to their apparent disregard for equality, but I can happily report that on a recent trip to their depot I saw that they FINALLY replaced their "white" and "colored" paper recycling bins with a "combined" receptacle. finally, both whites and non-whites have a place to bring their paper for recycling without being subjected to the ugliness of racial intolerance...and it's about time! read more

I love this place! LOL - I have to make a haul almost every week for work, and going to the dump is one my favorite days. No muss, no fuss: -Roll up and tell them what you're throwing away -They direct you where to go -You back in and throw your stuff away -You drive out and pay and you're on your way! It's a dump essentially so it's not supposed to be meadows and rainbows. It normally doesn't smell the greatest, but it very rarely smells truly horrid. read more

This place is so useful! After 8 years, and being moved three times, our cheap-o Ikea wardrobes finally fell apart. I priced three different options for disposing of the wreckage: (1) a "Bagster" (fabric dumpster from Waste Management), a full-on dumpster from Flannery's, and taking the materials to the Metro Central Recycling Center. And the verdict is... Metro Centro Recycling Center for the win! We loaded up our small SUV with the wardrobe wreckage plus some old lumber scraps, and the total bill was $33. So great! (The Bagster, on the other hand, would have been $149; and the dumpster would have been $245.) Other things to note: as of this writing, they're open until 5pm on Sundays, and they take credit cards. read more

This is strange, but I love this place! It's very efficient, organized, easy, and the people are so friendly and helpful. We were a bit unsure on the way there, but no need. I have Metro recycling's phone number memorized, on speed dial on the office phone, and in my directory on my mobile. I can't be without it. This past summer, I caught one of my residents while moving out trying to leave her newer mattress and box springs out in our garbage/recycling area. I was able to call Metro Recycling right there and then and find a place who would take her newer mattress and box springs, and she was able to take it to the place right then. Nice end to the day, nice way to maintain a cordial relationship with the departing resident, and nice way to share something still in good shape! Salvation Army also takes mattresses and box springs (in good shape) as well if you need pick up. I found out that Goodwill takes old vacuum cleaners and TVs for free and recycles them. Who knew? I sure didn't until I called Metro Recycling. Getting rid of old computer parts found in our dumpster is a breeze from the info I've received. What a great resource available to us here in the Metro area. The folks who man the line are efficient, friendly, and super knowledgeable. Can't say enough nice/good things about them. 503-234-3000. Pro tip: do not use your GPS (Google Maps, or Apple Maps, at least) to get here. They will both take you to the wrong place. Either a nonexistent address, or a private industrial site. You actually have to take St. Helen's road to Kittredge (none of the GPSs tell you this). Just plug in the cross streets of Front & 61st, and you'll get there (just follow the signs after you turn onto Front). I made the trek because I had way too much trash, and it was actually cheaper to dump it here than to pay anything for excess trash (one can + too many people + biweekly collection = nightmare). There is around a $28 minimum (for anything under a ton, I think), and there is a $3 discount (approx) if you bring in recyclables (e.g. cardboard boxes). You actually pull your car into the facility and dump the trash yourself. It is a hell of a fun experience, and I hope to do it again someday. Credit cards accepted. Bring purell. read more

I didn't realize how awesome this place was until I went on a Sunday and I was able to witness the sorting and picking operation. These guys literately go through all of that garbarge to recycle wood, metal, plastic, glass, etc. Awesome industrial machines, compelling process. Yesterday, I took a load of random garbage (sofa left in the street, etc) to the waste transfer station. I've been there a number of times, and am familiar with the procedures. I've always wondered why it takes to many government employees when many seem to have redundant purposes. Example: You check in at the window ("Cash or card?") and then pull forward a few feet to a person in a small hut that tells you to pull forward to the entrance. There, you will have one to three people telling you to head down to the guy that will instruct you where to unload. After checking in with the cheery gal at the window, I pulled ahead to the next person, and noticed she was completely unresponsive; her head was tilted back and her mouth was wide open. I expected she had a medical emergency and yelled several times. Then she woke up and told me to pull ahead to the next person, who sent me to the next person, etc. I unloaded quickly, drove back out to the pay booth, and was greeted by another guy. Nice enough. I asked him how much us taxpayers spend on paying employees to sleep. He immediately knew who I was talking about, said I was the third person yesterday to mention this, and said "Oh, she's not an employee; she's a contractor. She works for Recology, who we contract with". To us taxpayers, that means she's costing even MORE, since Recology is taking a percentage for paying her to sleep. I guess this is to be expected of a government bureaucracy. If I was running the waste transfer station, I would terminate all "contractors", and FIRE all employees that stand around doing nothing or tasks that are redundant. Went to Metro today with some yard debris to dump and some plastic containers to recycle . Just before I entered the place to dump I was greeted by a total idiot . I had some potted clumps from plastic containers and he informed me that this was not yard debris it was dirt. It would have to go into garbage. I told him I would put these in my pickup and carry them out because I did not want to get an upcharge . This transfer clone , the idiot, told me just to toss the clumps by the conveyor belt . I said "so I will not be charge extra " he replied they will only charge you by weight. It was then clear to me just dump everything and go out to the exit pull my pants down and take it like a man from a woman no less. An so it goes. read more

A trip to the dump was a great experience? It really was. So well orchestrated from beginning to end. Had over 25 gallons of paint cans and all taken at no charge. Circled out to get in line for general purpose disposal and moved along reasonably quickly. Paid the minimum disposal fee and on our way. Will definitely be making more trips after our move. read more

This is where I take all that hazardous waste that would be unacceptably toxic to put on a landfill, like used batteries or household chemicals.
