Crossing Louisiana I ended up staying the night near Jennings and was hungry, and this place popped up in Yelp, so I drove over. I was instantly impressed with the cool rustic Cajun facade and decor (stuffed alligator!) and the food turned out to be great. I had fried fish and hush puppies. Very fried, but very tasty. The staff is so friendly in an old-timey way that doesn't even seem real, like I needed hot sauce and the lovely cook poured some into a to-go cup for me and was worried that I wouldn't have enough. This place is a true Cajun rustic dive. If you are looking for fine dining, keep traveling. However if you are looking for an authentic Cajun experience, then you found it. When you walk in the door, the first thing you will see is a large stuffed alligator in a glass case. The staff has the thick Louisiana Cajun accent which is always fun to listen to. We got several dishes and the food varied from good to slightly better than good. The sausage gumbo picks up the smokey flavor from the sausage. Although i asked for sausage, it included chicken, too. The fried fish was cooked perfectly. The hush puppies were slightly over cooked. The boudin was excellent. I got a half pound of spicy...and it was SPICY. I would return, but would try other places in the area first. read more

Boudin King has changed significantly since my last visit. In particular, the Boudin King himself passed away and I'm unclear how the successorship of the restaurant was handled. That said, at least some of the experience is quite similar. For example, the boudin itself is still exquisite. As my friend Jaye V. has mentioned, the key word for boudin here is balance: even with the spicy boudin, it's nothing overpowering but rather a delicate balance between herbs, spices, pork and rice. As in the past, the gumbo follows the older pre-Paul Prudhomme preparations where the roux isn't quite cooked to the extent that it begins to take the color of a dark copper penny. However, the shrimp itself was of questionable quality and the gumbo was slightly more watery than I remembered. It certainly wasn't the glorious gumbo I remember from the past. All that said, the boudin is still incredible and the reason you stop in Jennings in the first place. While Billy's Boudin in Scott, LA and some other upstarts have arguably reached a similar level of awesomeness, they still call this place Boudin King for a reason. read more

Stopped in randomly while en route to NOLA from Texas after seeing a billboard for Boudin King. This place is a mile or so off the highway. My husband and I had Shrimp PoBoys and Hushpuppies. We are from Jennings so we eat here often. They make a good seafood platter. I usually get the fried catfish meal and it is really good. I have not eaten the chicken but I hear it's pretty good. The boudin is good. read more

Stopped here on a road trip due to the suggestions of other yelpers. It was immediately noted that outsiders were, um, unwelcome perhaps? (my wife was mean mugged the entire time) Wife had the shrimp po boy and a side of fried okra which was decent. Well I can't exactly comment on the food but I can comment on the customer service, this was a phone in order and the waitress was so rude that I ended up cancelling my order, I ordered 2 lbs of boudin she said that we are out... then I asked for a gizzard dinner , her reply was we out of that too , then I asked about a few other items and she also said they were out... I can understand about selling out of something but there's no need for sarcasm and rudeness like I was bothering her. I loved being here and the boudin is really 5 star stuff. I thought the fried fish was just ok. I've had better in Southern LA and the South for that matter. We got the platter and the shrimp and catfish were good. There weren't any oysters and the fries weren't great. I did like the chicken and sausage gumbo. They were good. I wasn't really overwhelmed by anything. I wished there was some mustard for my boudin. I would give them 3 stars if it weren't for the boudin, the awesomeness of the place and the value. read more

Was in town for a family reunion. Best boudin in LA. Rustic, casual and down to earth place. I also had the shrimp etouffee.

Cheap and good, no frills, nothing overly special, just plain good food.

Still my favorite rice-heavy spicy boudin. Not to be missed if you're motoring near Jennings.

If you want fresh, good boudin this is the place for you. I find that the spicy boudin is the better choice. Besides good boudin the Boudin King offers great gumbo,freshly prepared fried chicken and outstanding fried catfish. If you are passing through Jennings and are hungry, give it a try. Food quality seemed to have went down, however, the boudin is still good. I ordered the chicken and sausage gumbo; and maybe it was a bad day but it didn't taste very well. It also took over 20 minutes to get my order which is something new as well. They still have the same warm atmosphere and people that we have been getting for years. Two stars but only for today. Sorry, I might have to demote this place to The Boudin Prince, nothing unique about this place, not even sure how it's classified as cajun/creole in my book. We were coming from San Antonio to do some gambling at Coushatta and based on solid Yelp reviews, we decided to go about 60 miles out of the way to give this place a try, what the hell right? Yelp lead me astray this time. I had no idea what boudin was, kinda like dirty rice in casing, and it was good and a half pound was plenty for two. Chicken and sausage gumbo was bland and a bit thin, but did have plenty of meat. We both had seafood specials, (shrimp and catfish and fries) cup and bowl of gumbo, drinks and boudin for a total of around 40 bucks. If I lived nearer, I would visit this place again for a lunch special, but tourists out there, don't be suckered in like we were, this place is merely serviceable and it really wasn't worth the extra time and effort. read more

We stopped by while driving through because of the good reviews and we were very disappointed. The facility is filthy and it took half an hour to get our fried catfish and shrimp gumbo. People who ordered after me were getting their food and I had to ask several times when I was going to get my food. One of the worker decided to talk crap about me in front of me, not knowing that I was the one who asked where my order was. When I finally got my food there was no apology so I made a complaint. The manager gave me some kind of sausage thing, which I had no idea what it was stuffed with. The fried catfish was soso and while the potato salad was not the worst I had, it definitely was not good. My husband enjoyed his shrimp gumbo. And I don't recommend that you bring your kid here. Been going here all my life. I mostly drive through, but now and then, I come in and eat. I would not say the place is dirty. There seems to be some attempt to keep it clean enough to sit and eat, but i sure looks like they could use a fire truck to come in and just hose the hell out of the dining area. Hose it and clorox it. However, the food is great. Their chicken is the best in Jennings, when the boudin is hot and fresh, it is good, but I have tasted boudin in Eunice and other places that would destroy theirs. Their seafood is very very good, but i wish they still offered oysters. When in season, boudin king had the best fried oysters in Jeff Davis Parish. Their red beans and rice with sausage is the best also. French Fries are great until they get cold. You have to eat them with the meal quickly. This is the sort of food I crave every week. If I lived closer I would come more often, but many times on my way to Houston or Lake Charles, I stop and eat on the road. read more

I remember eating there over 12 years ago while traveling on I 10 & the food was just as bland & tasteless as before. Skip this place unless you must enjoy eating hard white rice with spiceless dull food.
