Picture of the style I took in to be recreated.

My review of a natural hair care salon........ Okay, so everyone that knows me knows how much I am into the health and styling of my hair. I cut my relaxed hair off (down to an inch) almost two years ago and never looked back. It's been a journey, trying to find a salon and stylist that can cater to my needs. Well, Uhuru is IT for me. I've been all over Saint Louis and have worked with many stylists so I have my own rating system: Overall Salon Services Offered 10 Pts (They do it all - COMB TWIST, 2 STRAND TWIST, 2 STRAND TWIST EXTENSIONS, KINKY TWIST, COILS, BANTU KNOTS, MICROS, CORN ROWS, CORN ROW EXTENSIONS, DESIGNER CORNROWS, PINCH BRAIDS, PIXIES, LOC UP DOS, LOC BUNS, LOC CORN ROWS, CURLED LOCS, BRAIDED LOCS, LOC MAINTENANCE, LOC ORGANIZATION, LOC COLOR, LOC EXTENSIONS, LOC REPAIR, EURO-LOCS, SEW-INS, QUICK WEAVES, CUSTOM HAIR COLOR, ROD SET, STRAW SET, FLAT IRON, PRESS AND CURL, AFRO STYLING, BARBER CUTS, CUSTOM BARBER CUTS, SCISSOR CUTS Location of Salon 8 Pts (Wish it were in a central location) Hours of Operation 9 Pts (Didn't see any posted but she stayed until my hair was done) Walk-in Policy 10 Pts (I walked in with a picture of a style and they did it that same day) Payment Options 5 Pts (Cash was the only form of payment at the time) Atmosphere 9 Pts (Laid back, not over crowded or gossipy) Layout 8 Pts (Spacious and not crowded but there's room for a little more flare) Cleanliness 10 Pts (Looked organized to me and not cluttered with junk) Music Selection Played 9 Pts (Rap at first but was changed to a more soothing selection) Friendliness 10 Pts (I didn't feel like an outsider, the owner wasn't snooty and the rest of the staff spoke) Salon Description Accuracy 10 Pts (This is a natural hair care salon that caters to ethnic hair types and they actually know how to do natural hair. I've been to a few salons that say the can do natural hair but only know how to straighten...(blow dry and flat iron) natural hair) Stylist Initial Contact 10 Pts (She was very welcoming) Personal Grooming 10 Pts (Her hair/clothing were well kept) Hair Consultation 10 Pts (She took her time to go on the Internet to look for more pics of the style I wanted to make sure she understood it. She studied it for a few minutes which means she was serious about making sure she could recreate it). She did say it would only take a few hours but that turned out to be more than estimated.....but I have extremely thick hair and the style was very intricate) Knowledge 10 Pts (Very knowledgeable about the nature and science of hair) Ability to LISTEN and not Freelance 10+ Pts (She did EXACTLY what I wanted, not her own vision) Ability to Recreate from a Picture 10+ Pts (I wanted a Goapele style and she mastered it) Conversation 10 Pts (Laid back, educational and personal but not too personal) Professionalism 10 Pts (A young man came in that was cursing and she asked him to respect her client (me) and she eventually asked him to leave) Products Used 10 Pts (All natural products used and explained) Total Rating: 9.333 My favorite part is the fact that she was able to create a funky style for me. I got SO many compliments and questions about where I had gone to have my hair done. I really loved the fact that she didn't rake through my hair like a mad woman! Will I be back? YES, I just have to find the time and another funky hair do! Lets hope I have the same experience next time. ******Update - I added pics of the style. The original style (Goapele's) has a much bigger swoop in the front. We realized at the end that she must have had hair added b/c it would take quite a bit of length to double back and make that big loop and knot. I've seen pics of her hair in two-strands and it doesn't look any longer than mine, may be shorter as mine is 9-10 inches now. So if you want the big, bold statement swoop you may need a little extra in the front to be safe.****** Also, please forgive the spotted up mirror. I sprayed something and instead of a nice mist, it came splashing out messing up the mirror!

I was extremely nervous about trying a hair salon here in St. Louis. I found Uhuru through Yelp and Facebook. After reading the reviews from customers with natural hair I decided to try them out. I scheduled my appointment with Idara. She was very cool and down to earth! She handled my natural hair with care and I could tell that she was very knowledgable about natural hair! That made me feel very comfortable. Her communication, as far as scheduling goes, was very good as well. I even changed my hairstyle the day before my appointment and it wasn't a problem at all. The overall view of the venue had a very comfortable vintage feel. It was clean and spacious. A tad bit pricey but overall a good salon. I would recommend this salon.

I booked and paid $90 specifically for a curly haircut after explaining that I wanted more curl definition, styling guidance, and a cut tailored to my natural curls. Instead, the service felt more like a standard haircut than a specialized curly service, and I left unhappy with both the styling and overall result. Anna was very sweet and did try to correct the styling when she realized I was unhappy, which I appreciated, but ultimately the experience did not feel like the specialized curly service I had booked and paid for. UPDATE: The owner reached out after my experience and offered me a complimentary appointment with another curly hair specialist. I decided to give the salon another chance, and I'm very glad I did. My second experience was completely different. I was extremely happy with my hair and, just as importantly, I left feeling educated about my curls and confident that I could recreate the results at home. My stylist took the time to explain the techniques and products that worked best for my hair, which was exactly what I had hoped for from the beginning. I really appreciate the owner listening to my concerns and making an effort to make things right. While my first experience was disappointing, I'm very happy with how the salon handled the situation and with the service I received the second time around. I would definitely return for another curly hair service.

What I left with was a chemical war zone on my scalp and hair that looked like it had been through a haunted car wash. The stylist completely botched my color. It was patchy, uneven, and flat-out fried. I looked like a spaghetti squash that had been left out in the sun. Worse. I went back to give them a chance to fix it and it somehow got even worse. The stylist acted like they had never seen a toner in their life and honestly seemed like they were not in a sober state to be handling bleach or scissors or any other living creature for that matter. I ended up going to another salon just to undo the damage and they were horrified at what had been done to my hair. After spending over six hundred dollars and enduring two appointments from hell, my hair is still damaged beyond repair. Think straw with commitment issues. Do yourself a favor. If you value your hair, your time, or your dignity, run in the opposite direction. This place should come with a warning label and a fire extinguisher.

My…read morehair is 4A, the extensions were 3B (a noticeable mismatch) that the stylist and salon owner insisted "blended well." Rather than fix it in the salon, she told me to wet and scrunch them at home. They did not improve. When I had dinner with my grandpa the next day and he saw how awful my extensions looked said my hair looked like a "mop." Everyone who saw my hair was appalled at how awful they looked. After sending photos, neither the stylist nor the owner could acknowledge the obvious problem. The owner admitted the curl pattern wasn't an exact match but offered only a perm + reinstall, no refund. I was never shown the extensions before they were ordered, and Michelle the stylist told me that she had the "perfect extensions" to match my curl pattern. On top of the wrong curl pattern, the extensions were installed too heavily for my fine hair, leaving my scalp red, irritated, and scratched by sharp adhesive edges of the k tips . Given the damage, I declined further work and still received no refund for either the hair or the installation. No one at Kink Hair salon took accountability. If you have 4A curls or tighter, please save yourself some money and go to a curly extension specialist. I ended up buying 4A clip in curly extensions myself and they look like a perfect match, proving there's no excuse for licensed cosmetologists to not be able to find the proper curl patterned hair for my extensions.

I genuinely do not like leaving bad reviews, especially because I've been coming here for almost…read moretwo years, but today was quite literally my final straw. I've gone here consistently since moving to St. Louis for haircuts, root touch-ups, color, all of it. I also truly do not care who I'm assigned to. I'm not one of those clients who needs one specific stylist every single time. I just expect basic communication, decent service, and for my appointment to actually make sense when I arrive. Coordination! Unfortunately, the vibe here has always felt off The front desk is rarely welcoming. Half the time, no one greets you, acknowledges you, or makes you feel like they are happy you're there. The energy can feel very cliquey, dismissive, and honestly kind of performative. It gives "we're all a family here," but somehow the client is not included in the family. I've overlooked a lot because I liked the actual hair services. I've waited 30 minutes past my appointment time before. I've had appointments moved around. One time, I was sent to the Webster Groves location, got there, and was then told I actually needed to go to Des Peres because they could not take me. Like...okay gas?? But today was what officially did it for me. I booked a root touch-up before a photo shoot tomorrow and a trip next week. I sent pictures and a description of what I wanted directly to the stylist beforehand. I've also had this exact type of service done through this salon multiple times, usually for around $250, so this was not some random mystery appointment. I arrived and waited around 30 minutes to be assisted, only to then be told it would cost over $400. And to be very clear, I am not asking anyone to lower their prices, undervalue their work, or change their hourly rate for me. Charge whatever you charge. That is fully your business. My issue is: why was none of this communicated nor coordinated before I showed up? You had my appointment details. You had the pictures. You had my description. You had my client history from the past two years. If the service was now going to cost almost twice what I normally paid, or if I had supposedly booked the wrong category, somebody should have figured that out before I arrived, waited 30 minutes, and left with absolutely nothing done. Even the stylist seemed surprised by how I had apparently been charged or categorized during previous appointments, which honestly just made the whole situation feel even more disorganized. That is an internal coordination issue, not something that should suddenly become the client's emergency while they are sitting in the chair So now I have a photo shoot tomorrow, a trip next week, and no hair did or done because this salon could not communicate beforehand. After nearly two years of being a loyal client, I'm done overlooking the rude front desk energy, the scheduling confusion, the long waits, and the constant lack of coordination. The actual talent may be there, but the overall experience is not. I will not be coming back. Respectfully, the vibes are not worth $400+.
