I can't say enough great things about UHURU Natural Hair Salon, especially Sara, who has truly been a lifesaver for us. Sara is our go-to detangler for my daughter, who is 8 years old, mixed, and has naturally curly hair that tangles and dreads very easily. When her hair gets to the point where we can't comb it out at home, Sara steps in with so much patience, skill, and care. She has a gentle technique that allows her to slowly and carefully work through the toughest tangles without hurting my daughter's head. That alone means everything as a parent. We've been to Sara about 2-4 times specifically for the detangling process. While it is an investment (about $100 per hour and usually takes 2-3 hours), she gets the job done--and done right. I'm always apologizing for letting my daughter's hair get to that point and feeling bad that she has to sit through it, but Sara never makes us feel judged. She's kind, understanding, and incredibly professional. The alternative, cutting her hair off--is way scarier, and thanks to Sara, we don't have to go there. If you're a parent of a mixed child or a child with very curly hair and you're feeling overwhelmed, book with Sara. She is worth every penny, and I'm beyond grateful for her care and expertise. I hate to leave this review because the shop overall seemed really nice. However, I scheduled a consultation with Gifti for microlocs about 3 weeks ago $35. We moved forward to installation day and I get here after she washes my hair and she says your hair will not lock and I do not feel comfortable doing your installation. This is after I moved my whole schedule around to accommodate the date, and I asked why was this not determined during the consultation and she says "well I asked you does your hair curl when it gets wet, I guess my idea of a curl pattern does not align with my clients". So then says "im going to blow dry you and put your two braids back in". She then recommended me to cut my hair off or wait a while longer and find a stylist who will lock my hair. I then went to another salon in crisis mode the same day and they said my hair was fine to lock. What a waste of a day. read more

Great atmosphere and great people.... They make you feel at home here at Uhuru, offering great service and reasonable prices for hairstyle that are one of a kind. They have it all here, a fantastic colorist, braiders, loc specialist...I love that their goal is not to just style hair but to make sure your natural hair is healthy in the process of styling it, Which is important to me. I also appreciate them constantly disinfecting their salon during a time of COVID. I would definitely recommend Uhuru salon to anyone. read more

Before I get started on this review, a little background on my hair. I've had 'natural' hair since January of 2009. What does that mean? It means that I don't chemically straighten my hair with what's called a 'Relaxer'. What's a relaxer? It's a type of cream containing either sodium hydroxide or ammonium thioglycolate that works to chemically 'relax' the natural curl present in the hair of most African Americans. So now you know why I have ridiculously curly/kinky hair. It's the way my hair 'naturally' looks when I don't beat it into submission with harsh chemicals. Kapeesh? Anyway, after two years of growing out my crazy curly hair, I decided I wanted a change. A big change. I miss my teeny fro like crazy. It's easy, it's low maintenance, and it keeps me cool during the ridiculous St. Louis summers. Okay, and maybe I was having a bit of a Loretta Devine moment from "Waiting to Exhale". Whatever. But I don't trust just anyone to cut this mop. I haven't stepped foot in a salon in two years, but I knew that when I got a haircut, I wanted it to be done by someone who understood and regularly worked with natural hair. And that eliminated about 99.5% of the hair salons in St. Louis. Until I discovered Uhuru Stylz. I read all of the positive reviews and did my own research, and decided that this is where I wanted to go for my cut. I called and made an appointment with one of the stylists. Told her my situation and made an appointment. Fine. Today I went in for my scheduled appointment, and everything seemed fine. She was super friendly, and the salon itself was clean and spacious. I sat down in the chair and explained how short I wanted my hair. She listened intently, and then spent the next 10 minutes or so trying to convince me not to cut my hair. *Insert heavy dose of eye-rolling here* She rattled off a list of hair styles she could create that would allow me to keep the length of my hair. Um...what part of "I want short hair" did she not understand? Even if I DID end up regretting a short cut, IT'S JUST HAIR. It grows back. After more back and forth than I was comfortable with (seriously, I should have just left then), she finally agreed to cut my hair. However, there were more red flags: Red Flag #1: She wanted to wash my hair first. Say what? Rule number one of curly hair: it shrinks as it dries. Why would you cut soaking wet hair? Rookie. I shot that idea down. Red Flag #2: She wanted to blowdry my hair straight before she cut it. Insert second eyeroll here. Again. You don't straighten/wet/flatiron curly hair before you cut it. Despite the red flags, she did a fine job with lots of coaching and guidance from me. The cut ended up being about an inch shorter than I wanted it, but it's just hair -- it grows back. And I still like it. Honestly, I feel like a lot of this was my own fault -- I assumed that a fellow natural haired sista would know and understand the ins and outs of African American natural hair and wouldn't need so much help along the way. And I was wrong. Truth be told, the white girl at Frontenac Salon and Spa did a better job with my curly cut back in 2009. I learned my lesson. Don't judge a book by it's cover. I was extremely nervous about trying a hair salon here in St. Louis. I found Uhuru through Yelp and Facebook. After reading the reviews from customers with natural hair I decided to try them out. I scheduled my appointment with Idara. She was very cool and down to earth! She handled my natural hair with care and I could tell that she was very knowledgable about natural hair! That made me feel very comfortable. Her communication, as far as scheduling goes, was very good as well. I even changed my hairstyle the day before my appointment and it wasn't a problem at all. The overall view of the venue had a very comfortable vintage feel. It was clean and spacious. A tad bit pricey but overall a good salon. I would recommend this salon. read more

As a visitor in the Lou, I was thankful to find someone who could quickly (quickly!) get my locs back to normal. Three days later it still smells like the essential oil that Phyllis put in. Dig it! I docked a star though because when I tried to call to make an appointment a few days before, no one answered or called me back after I left a message. The only way I got the appointment was because I searched the stylists out on Style Seat. Otherwise, how else would I have gotten in? Got my hair twisted here about 10 years ago, I remember them being so nice and understanding of a young, indecisive, "tender-headed" kid. I recall the woman being so patient with me, giving me breaks and talking to me in a comforting manner. I visited this place again recently and can say it's still the same gem of a hair salon it was years ago. In a neighborhood that's changed so much over the years *cough* GENTRIFICATION IS A PLAGUE *cough* this shop is the constant. With such welcoming, knowledgeable people it's no surprise it's stood firm for over a decade now. I hope this place will remain for many years to come! read more

Idara has been doing my 2 strand twists for about a year and a half. The stylists at UHURU are very nice, and more importantly, knowledgeable about natural black hair. There is usually fun chatter, and I always get a nice style. They specialize in hair color. I have not used that service, but plan to in the future. Idara was the worst stylist I ever sent my daughter to. My daughter is new to St.Louis, and wanted to have her natural hair blowed out. Idara was inconsiderate with her time, she gave her a 6:00 time and did not get her out until well after 10:00pm. She was rude, and very disrespectful in how she spoke to my daughter, and made her hair way too straight. Making it difficult for her natural curls to return. This was my second hair visit to Uhuru after a consultation with Erica months earlier. Today, I was considering cutting my dreads off due to thinning. Erica was very helpful in consulting me about "my" hair. As I learn about the care of my own hair, I think her knowledge of hair and of her profession will be the winning key. I am experiencing thinning hair and have a sensitive scalp. Erica put my hair in an protective up-style that "did not hurt". I was amazed! I actually wore that style much longer than I have ever wore an up style. My hair responded well to her products. I also purchased oil that she recommended. Very rude person works there, unprofessional and not very knowledgeable about natural hair

My good friend suggested that I visit her stylist - Phyllis. I have been transitioning my hair for 10 months - but was getting it straightened. Because of the STL heat/humidity, I decided to start to wear my transitioning hair in a twist out. I spoke with friends with natural hair, watched YouTube clips, read blogs, and thought that I could do my own hair. After 4 days of "hair panics" I decided to seek professional help since my hair was more difficult to work with than I'd previously expected. I met Phyllis for a consultation - sharing with her my hair woes and insecurities. She was extremely compassionate, knowledgeable, and understanding. She answered my questions with empathy and patience - sort of like a "natural hair therapist." We decided that I would get a twist out that she would wrap into an ornate up do - to help keep my straight ends hidden but this protective style would allow my hair to grow. In a little over an hour, Phyllis helped to transform me from a self-conscious, uncertain, and confused woman with transitioning hair to a woman who is more confident in her skin because of her beautiful transitioning hair.
