I dropped by here during an early evening walk. Did I need an iced latte at 6:25pm? Probably not. Did I want an iced latte? Absolutely (and always.) When I walked in, immediately I was able to take in the the beautiful visuals - gorgeous baked goods front and center and a light and airy space. As it turns out, I was the last cafe order of the day, but the barista that served me was so nice and chatty despite being at the tail end of his shift. I went ahead and ordered a honey iced latte (which was delicious) and enjoyed some of it on the sidewalk patio. Overall, I had a pleasant experience and it was good to discover that they stay open fairly late into the day. I'll definitely be sure to drop by again in the future. read more

Bakery items are a mixed bag, see details below. Cortado and Flat white--5/5 Almond croissant--3/5-- monstrously big to be a full meal, but texture is gummy, could do with more layers and flakiness and most importantly, almond filling. Chocolate Turtle Tart--5/5, all elements including base and cream topping blend well. Sandwiches--would love the option to warm the sandwiches. This is a delightful stop for a decadent pastry or solid sandwich. We popped in for a quick lunch during a workday. The tuna sandwich included black olives, which was a nice surprise, and the smoked salmon had sundried tomatoes for the salty component (instead of capers). And the bread was divine. This pastry shop is not in the historic Eastern Market but is across the street from it. The area is frequently shut down on weekends for extended street markets but you can still walk up. This place threw me for a loop in the sense that they're open all day but their pastry selection is fairly limited and sells out early. The first time I tried coming in, all they had were some basic butter croissants. I came back to find a modest but tasty selection, including nut-flavored ultra-rich tarts. The pastries were as indulgent as they looked. However, the box they came in was quite floppy, which for a set of easily squishable soft desserts is not ideal. I escaped real disaster but they did not travel as well as I'd hoped. So to me, there's some quality here, but this place could stand to do better on the finer details. When I think about my favorite French bakery across town, it has a solid selection throughout its open hours and offers excellent packaging, so I'm not asking for anything unrealistic here. read more

Boulangerie Saint Georges is a nice place for an outdoor coffee meetup. It's centrally located and has nice patio seating. Unfortunately, the mozzarella and tomato sandwich wasn't European let alone French. The bread wasn't on a traditional baguette. It was on multigrain (not white) baguette. Also, for anyone with a nut alergy, it has pesto. It didn't list pesto near the sandwich case from what I could recall. The service was quick and easy. I didn't try any pastries. I was craving a fresh French baguette. I thought this would be a great place to try one. Next time, I'll try a pastry and coffee. read more

Have you tried the flan yet? Delicious! Flan was really good! The first bite you get a smooth and creamy taste that melts into your mouth. I love the balance of sweetness that is not over powering. I got the raisin pastry that was not too sweet and nice balance with the raisins. I got my favorite: Ice latte with hint of Vanilla with my milk choice of almond milk. The best! I stopped in for the first time today to satisfy my sweet tooth. I popped in during the lunch hour so the line was pretty long but it moved quickly. They had someone with a portable credit card machine walking through so I was able to quickly check out with them. I picked up two pastries and both looked and tasted delicious. After months and months of waiting, Boulangerie Saint Georges from Paris opened quickly in the heart of Eastern Market. Hosting their first USA location, locals lined up every day within the first week of opening. Overall, it's a great experience! The line moved quicker than expected. The displays show off many pastries from chocolate croissants to quiche to other pastries, salads, and more. I ordered a latte, chocolate croissants, and a bacon quiche. Everything was solid, especially the latte, which uses coffee roasted in Italy. I ordered a small and the cup was half latte and half foam, but it still tasted strong. The bacon quiche includes walnuts, a unique and welcome touch. The chocolate croissant was warm and tasty, but not as good as Pluma's. There's outdoor seating and a few places to sit inside. haven't stopped in until recently when I saw there wasn't a line out of the door. space is nice, lots of seating inside and out and is always busy. came in around lunchtime, lots of pastries sold out but they had croissants/pac and a few others. tried a croissant and a slice of flan. the croissant was terrible - not fresh, had been sitting. 0 texture on the outside, doughy/soft inside, lacking distinctive layers, structure, and buttery flavor. I have been wanting to try this place however there is always a line out the door whenever I pass by. We finally got the opportunity to stop in Sunday afternoon. We had the ham sandwich, chocolate croissants, and took an apricot tart to go. I don't know if it was because it was so late in the day but the bread was so hard we couldn't even bite into it. The pan au chocolat was delicious, I wish I could review the croissant but my partner ate it too fast for me to try (which means it was good). I ended up getting a veggie sandwich on a baguette, and it came with greens, cucumber, tomatoes, feta, olives, and mayo. The sandwich tasted alright and was reasonably priced. I came here on Mother's Day, which may have been my mistake. I've been so excited to finally try this place. But when my mom and I arrived at 12:30, there were only two types of sandwiches left. It wasn't super busy but j still stood in line for 20 minutes in order to pay. There were no pastries. We split one chicken sandwich, which was just ok - it was grilled chicken with hard boiled eggs and olives, an odd combination. We also got lattes, which were fine. Overall, I think they may be understaffed and still have some kinks to work out. I'll give them another shot in a few months. read more

I finally came here with my friend after hearing about this place for weeks after its splashy opening. The hype is still there as we had to wait in a (quick-moving) line to place our orders. The pastry selection was amazing though, they had the classic plain, chocolate, and almond croissants, their signature croissant (chocolate almond), and palmiers the size of your face. They then had fancier pastries like mini tarts, paris-brests, pavlovas, etc, in addition to a cold case of grab and go sandwiches. I got an iced latte, but it did take a while to get it since it was a Saturday morning around 10:30. Understandable, but something to think about. Like other reviewers, the patio seating was definitely a standout. Little cafe tables and chairs with big umbrellas and gorgeous pink hydranges really set the scene for some excellent people watching. Came by on a Sunday morning around 10:30am there was a line out the door but seemed short based on others' reactions. It was raining out so that could have been why it wasn't as busy. From getting in line to leaving with my pastries didn't take more than 10 minutes. There's a few tables inside but I just got my stuff to go. I tried the pain au chocolat and what seemed like a turtle flavored cookie with caramel, chocolate and walnuts/almonds on top. Staff was friendly and attentive. I was a bit underwhelmed by the pain au chocolate. As one other reviewer mentioned, it could be the DC humidity but the pain au chocolate was very soft and not crisp or flaky on top like I was hoping. The chocolate filling also was only concentrated on one side when I bit in. The cookie though was very solid flavor wise so I enjoyed that more. There seemed to be a lot of other dessert options that I didn't get a chance to try so would still come back if I'm back in the area. read more

The chocolate croissants are the best I've ever had. Unlike all others where the chocolate bits are hard, these are soft, which makes a much better experience. The croissant breading is the best I've ever had -- soft, flaky and pillowy. The regular croissants are almost as good, but I think the humidity of Washington makes them less flaky for some reason. The chicken sandwich is fabulous -- it's large enough for two people to eat, the bread is divine and the combination of olives, hard boiled eggs and chicken comes together in a very satisfying way. I found the salmon sandwich to be not all that great. Perfectly fine, but I didn't get much smoked salmon flavor. The croquet monsieur was greasy and I didn't get any taste of ham. I found the cappachino to be perfectly fine, but a bit bland. It should have a slight edge to it. The regular coffee is very good. But the hot chocolate is perfect -- not to sweet or too rich, as French chocolate can be, but still thick and luscious. I greatly appreciate the wooden (or bamboo) trays and real cups to drink out of. The chairs are from France, and very nice, but I don't understand the concept of sitting on stools! I wish they had a better set up. You order food but you have to wait until you get to the cash register to order any beverages, and that makes your wait longer than it needs to be. It should be like any other place -- you place your order at the register and pay, and then someone starts your coffee and another gets your food. read more

I hate to write this, but Saint George is a huge disappointment. We waited for this place for years, only to be rewarded with flavorless croissants and bad coffee. All of the savory or plain bread and croissants lack flavor. I think they need more salt. But the croissants also don't taste very buttery, perhaps because they lack salt or because they are still trying to find the right American butter. The baguette is stodgy and hard. It definitely lacks salt and should be crisper with an airier texture. I have had baguettes that taste like this in France, but they are not the baguette traditionnelle you'd hope to find at an authentic French bakery. Bread Alley, La Betty, and Bread Furst are all far superior. And La Pluma's and Je ne sais Quoi's pastries are so much flakier and tastier. The walnut dried fruit bread was also seriously lacking salt. Finally, the coffee is terrible. The milk is way over-steamed --burnt and too fluffy. And the espresso just tastes over roasted and under pulled. The patio here can't be beat, and I applaud a business for creating such a great atmosphere, including all the work to revamp this building. The patisseries are pretty good, though the choix was a little overstuffed and tough. However, service is a mess, and it tasted like a European chain or what the French think they can get away with in America. It would be great of this food tasted more like what you can get at a good French bakery/cafe. I'll still go here occasionally to enjoy a dessert or to grab a tea and enjoy the patio, but hopefully they will take a lesson from other quality places in the area or get their sea legs under them and revamp some recipes. read more

I've been back after my first review. The lines are still long and tedious. Customers should not have to wait 15 to 20 minutes just to check out once they have their food. The lines are Soviet style with long lines for bread. BStG has a hand held checkout device but rarely if ever uses it on behalf of customers. I've bought a bakery bread at Whole Foods faster. By 1:30 in the afternoon, they are usually out of bread and pretty much everything else, leaving anyone coming home from work looking to buy a bread, sandwiches or dessert out of luck. Unlike other bakeries in DC, and elsewhere for that matter, BStG fails to make enough bread to satisfy demand. Perhaps it's a matter of not wanting to deal with left over bread although it would be easy enough to sell outstanding packaged bread crumps from baguettes and croissants if they thought of it. My guess is that someone will take a look at BStG's operation and come up with a better solution since there's obviously a market for well made bakery bread. read more

I've been pain au chocolat obsessed since my first trip to Europe. Unfortunately, it's incredibly difficult to find a good one in the states, including DC. Enter Boulangerie Saint Georges. Easily the best pain au chocolat I've ever had in America. It's flaky and soft. You can taste the butter. Solid 9.5, losing half a point only because I didn't get chocolate in very many bites - easily fixed if the batons had been spaced farther apart. My boyfriend and I also had a cold brew and an iced latte. Iced latte was very nice, the cold brew was just ok. The outside patio is very cute if you can grab a table, and the cashier was incredibly sweet. I do think they would benefit from having more than one register, but the line moves quickly as is. I don't think it's fair for anyone to knock this place for running out of pastries by a certain time, as you can easily walk inside before ordering to see what they have available. If you really want quality pastry, it's worth the wait. If you're satisfied with sub-par, there are plenty of other places without a line (and for a reason). After waiting for so long, this place has been the biggest disappointment. The lines are ridiculous. I've have them six opportunities. Even when there were three people in line, it took 15 minutes to buy a baguette. Once I ordered the prosciutto sandwich and was given the tuna (didn't realize it till I was at my desk). On another, I got the Paris Brest, it was a goopey mess. The baguette is decent, I have had it three time. First time it was hard and dry, second time it was doughy, the third time it was actually good. Same with the croissant, they can be over or under baked. Getting bread and pastries should be a simple and quick affair. I really wanted to like this place. read more

There is always a wait because they only have one register but the staff is very friendly. I got an iced latte and the coffee was just okay and nothing special. I would just get the baked goods. The bakery offers delicious pastries, but I was disappointed with the limited selection, as I was hoping for more variety to choose from based on the photos. I had the cold brew, that was just average and was more room temperature than cold. Unfortunately, the customer service also left something to be desired. The lady taking our order was welcoming and attentive, not the case with the girl who was helping check people out with the portable device. Instead of just coming up to us to do so, she pulled us out of line (line wasn't long at all) while we had a bottled water and trays in our hands.
