Needed a little pick-me-up on a long day of walking around the city, this shop is a little out of the way from the monuments, but delicious anyways. We got an almond croissant - probably the best filling to an almond croissant I've had (and I've had many). I tried Pluma as part of a Hispanic Heritage Month content series I created and it was one of my favorite places I stumbled upon! It's feels a bit bigger inside than it looks from the outside and you can see (and smell) so many items being made fresh. They have a large assortment of breads, pastries, desserts, and even lunch options. I opted for the quiche of the day which had caramelized onions, ricotta, and squash (unexpected but delicious). At $5.50 it's relatively affordable and very filling. They had some seasonal coffee options like a vanilla cheesecake cold brew - yum! I decided on the Spanish latte which is made with a sweetened condensed milk syrup and cinnamon. It's easily one of my favorite lattes in DC. My daughter recently held a brunch to celebrate her law school graduation. I helped her by ordering the bakery items from Pluma Bakery. I'm in California, so trying to figure out what in the heck to get was difficult. Executive Chef Victoria Hart made everything so simple. Her menu was clear and concise, she was easy to communicate with and even when I added items at the last minute ( which was my bad planning) she accommodated. Upon pickup, I was greeted with a cheery crew who were congratulatory when they learned about the celebration and packed all my items neatly in boxes. The bakery items were incredible- especially the sesame seed cookies!!! The fruit tray was beautiful. All this to say, I highly recommend this wonderful bakery for your parties or just hanging out on a Sunday morning. DC is so lucky! read more

My friend and I stopped by Pluma before we grabbed dinner in the Union Market area last Saturday afternoon! The interior is minimal and spacious. The seating is mainly a long and wide table (good for co-working) that can fit 10+ people. It is a bit cold in there, but other than that, it was a nice spot to chill at for a couple hours. COLD BREW - 5.50 I don't remember the cold brew much, so it was probably average. It went well with the pastry I got, though. CHOCOLATE PISTACHIO CROISSANT - 6.75 This is one of their most popular pastries. The chocolate croissant was dusted with a layer of confetti sugar, and it contained a lightly whipped pistachio cream that wasn't too sweet. Overall, a more unique croissant, but if you're health conscious, I'm not sure if I'd recommend. Pluma is on the pricier side, but they're on the inKind app! So if you have inKind, the amount you end up paying is more reasonable. read more

I've heard so many amazing things about their croissants and they certainly lived up to the hype! I tried a chocolate croissant and their almond croissant. The chocolate one really showcased how flakey and buttery their croissants are. It was so puffed up that it almost looked like a ball when I was looking at it through the display case and when I bit into it, I could see all the individual layers of buttery goodness inside. Today I stopped in with a friend who loves bakeries and here's what I thought. - seems like a good spot to get work done if you work from home. It smells delicious in here and there's a long table with lots of space. I stopped by Pluma with a friend last weekend, when we were staying in the area. They have a small pastry counter and a full coffee/drink menu. I ordered a coffee special they were offering that day (a corn latte), which was too sweet for me, but I ordered it in lieu of a pastry as a treat. The coffee shop is quite small, not too much seating. It is beautiful and charming inside and the service was good, but it just didn't stand out to me, being quite small and offering a smaller selection of baked goods/pastries/food than many other DC pastry shops/coffeeshops. This cafe left me feeling a little blue(bird). I stopped in here for a midday coffee and left with a chai instead... so here's the tea: There is some indoor seating and minimal but cute decor. They had a ton of intriguing looking pastries (that cost a pretty penny but maybe that's just DC for ya). The baristas were very nice, but I ordered a ice latte and after paying was notified they didn't have any milk. So I changed my order to a matcha latte. I went to the restroom and came back to my drink not ready and to find out they were out of matcha too. I finally settled on a chai latte which they did make quickly. It was just ok, a little sweet and not a lot of spices. Given the number of coffee shop options in this area I don't think I'd go back given my experience, but I'm sure this is a unique one. Had such a delightful time here. There is a wide table and window seating, so despite the limited space they have its a great use of the space. It doesn't get too crowded so it fit a good amount of people that doesn't cause a lot of noise, great for people coming to the cafe to get work done. The food options looked so tasty, but very much on the pricey side which is pretty indicative of the area we're in. We got the Gluten Free Almond Tart which was so moist and decadent for a gluten free pastry! When you order at the counter you can peer into the large bakery in the back and I can attest it made the tart a lot better knowing it was made in small batches. The almond base was sweet and held the crust together, and with the thin almond slices, it brought a great crunch and variety to the pastry despite being all made by almonds. My friend got the corn latte which had a very subtle corn flavor at the end, wish it was more prominent but the coffee to milk ratio was spot on with a good level of sweetness. I tried their Passion fruit Matcha Tonic which was such a fruity and refreshing way to enjoy a matcha. The sweetness of the passionfruit paired very well with the bitterness of the matcha and made me savory every sip, such a great balance and great way to incorporate matcha into a summer drink. read more

4.50 stars. I had an absolutely decadent ham and cheese croissant from Pluma, and it was far better than I expected. In fact, it very well might have been the best one I've had since a trip to much lauded Tartine Bakery in San Francisco. What made this so damn good? Crispy layers of croissant, unimpeded buttery goodness, a super high quality ham, and what I suspect was a bubbly gruyere. This combination of ingredients might seem simple, but the Pluma folks have mastered it on all fronts. It's a decent pastry coffee shop in the area. I've had the vanilla latte, chai latte, and Spanish latte. The drinks are inconsistently made depending on the person making it. The vanilla latte I had today was obnoxiously sweet but I've had it before and the sweetness wasn't so overwhelming. I picked up a variety of pastries to bring back home with me to the Midwest when I was here last weekend. I got their butter croissant, chocolate croissant, almond croissant, and pistachio chocolate croissant. I wasn't a fan of their pistachio chocolate croissant and thought the butter croissant and almond croissant are fine/okay. I would say their chocolate croissant is quite good. I would recommend grabbing that when you're here and I would come back for it. The shop is spacious and have tons of seating indoor and outdoor. This is a really fun shop with a wonderful variety of baked products, whether you're there for a morning pastry, a breakfast dish, or something savory in the afternoon. Overall the pastries are great. I like that it's clearly an on-site bakery and things are coming out of the ovens constantly, so you're not getting something that's been on a truck and sitting around. As some folks have noted, there is sometimes some variability in the products where they've occasionally been in the oven a few minutes too long, but the products themselves always taste great and the staff is very nice about picking whichever specific pastry you want from the batches. The morning pastries do tend to run out by later in the morning, so if you have favorites it's good to get there earlier. I really enjoy the espresso drinks, particularly the mocha. I'm not fond of mochas overall but the chocolate they use tastes like a darker chocolate that gives it a nice depth and interesting taste. The shop is bright and cheerful, though it can be a bit noisy and is set up more for short visits rather than a place designed to camp out on a computer or otherwise lengthy sits. read more

While okay, none of the desserts stand out in offering particularly compelling or noteworthy flavor notes; or adding something distinct from other iterations of like dishes; or relative to other bakeries and cafes in the area. The cheese cake is clearly of good ingredient quality and decent execution, but quite bland and cookie-cutter; with the lemon torte and banana bread being good but forgettable, in that the sugar alone saves it but is not enough to warrant nor support their selection. The bread pudding-- the best item I tried among the four items-- is quite satisfying. Having taken it home, I enjoyed several bites tested at variances of refrigerated; frozen; heated; with peanut butter; with white blossom honey; and with paprika, cinnamon, and pumpkin spice. Nonetheless, it did not comprehensively adjust my appraisal of the composite experience. While the desserts are not bad, my lukewarm review is due to the diversity, strength, and abundance of competition in the area. Within the dichotomy of DC/DMV area cafes, there are Asian, Middle Eastern, East European, West European, and American bakeries; and within the latter, I can make any number of dichotomies, but I will leave that distinction to the idles of others. Myself, I am divided whether I prefer, in my oversimplification of American bakeries, NY or Southern style. Given what it takes to break par let alone stand out, I do not wish for my review to be taken too harsh; so much as a gentle push to catch up with other venues. read more

Pluma is a cute pastry/coffee shop right across the signal house office. The space is small and cozy and their pastries are made fresh right infront of you. I've tried all the croissants here and have loved each and every one. They are flakey, buttery, and are stuffed with the right amount of filling. However, my favorite item here id their basque cheesecake. If you come after lunch, they most likely will sell out. It's so rich, velvety, and creamy! I had an excellent ham and cheese croissant and good Basque cheesecake from Pluma today. The croissant had a great texture inside and out, with a nice crunchy and flakey exterior and soft interior. The ham and cheese filling had great flavor and all of the ingredients were well balanced. The cheesecake was solid but not amazing. It tasted like most cheesecakes I've had -- nothing special. Pluma's physical space could use a couple improvements: the wifi was really weak and unstable, it wasn't clear where to get utensils (after asking the staff, I was directed to use the large, poorly marked drawers under the condiment station), and the push/pull front doors confused everybody who used them. I sat next to the doors and watched every person have trouble with them. Pluma's space is very cute but there are some obvious opportunities to improve. read more
