This may be one of the last great local pet store boutiques in the Bay Area. They have the best treats, food, accessories and supplies from all the vetted brands. I called one day wondering if they had a buddybelts dog harness in stock and they had several! Even colors not available online in various sizes and great selection of dog carriers, harnesses and beds too! I cannnot wait to have more time to come in with my dogs and get them some treats and maybe a new accessory or toy soon when I have a bit more time. Went in randomly to ask about their grooming services and get some treats while I was running some errands on Santa Cruz Ave. I was instantly greeted with kindness and they were super helpful in answering questions for my babies who have had some bad grooming experiences at other places. I was given options, reassured, and they found time to let me bring them in. Took my babies today, and I was super happy for them! The process was easy for me to drop them off, and they were instantly greeted with happy smiles and love. It took a lot less time than expected, we only did a full bath and blow dry. My babies have never been this soft!!!! Truthfully, the price is more expensive than I'm used to. After today, I really feel that it's worth it! Typically after a grooming session, they come home and are really anxious or sad. Today, my boys came home and were their usual selves, relaxing and playing! Bow Wow Meow advertises in-store cat grooming services. Don't believe them. My sweet senior house cat needs her claws groomed and a bath with non-allergenic shampoo. I have previously given her baths myself and groomed her nails, but I can't manage it by myself any more. I called Monday and they said I could schedule an appointment but they needed to check with the groomer first to make sure he would groom a senior cat. I spoke to a clerk today and they want us to come in at 8:00 am because they claim my cat will not be able to tolerate noisy dogs later in the day. This is nonsense! I don't schedule my own medical appointments that early! Getting my cat into her carrier and driving her 10 miles to the store at that hour in rush hour traffic would be much more stressful than a few dogs having baths. STAY AWAY if you have a cat!! I've been bringing my 1-year-old Ragdoll to Bow Wow Meow for grooming for quite a while, and always had great experiences with the previous groomer (an older gentleman who I believe retired). Henry has consistently handled grooming well and come home happy and calm. That changed drastically during our most recent visit and we won't be returning. I dropped Henry off at noon for a standard appointment to remove a mat, clean up his rear, and deshed. Hours passed with no update. When I called at 4 p.m., I wasn't given any real explanation about what was happening, only that I could come pick him up soon. No one called me to inform me of any issues, stress, or delays and I later found out through the managers email that Henry had urinated on himself multiple times, required three baths, and was handled very roughly to towel dry. None of this was disclosed at the time of pickup or on the phone, I was only told he had "an accident" and was sent home still damp, with a new mat on his tail from being wet for so long. When I got home, my normally affectionate, outgoing cat was visibly traumatized. He ran and hid under the bed, and wouldn't let me near him. This has never happened before in any grooming visit, and is completely out of character. I reached out to express my concern only to receive a very rude and dismissive response from the manager, blaming the situation entirely on my cat's stress, and even implying that I contributed to the issue by "rushing" the appointment which is just absurd. I had only asked if he might be ready 15 minutes early, and was told that would be totally fine by her own staff. To have that used against me felt both very inappropriate and unprofessional. Even worse, the story I was told by the manager Susan over email did not align with what I had been told earlier on pickup. I never received a call or heads-up about the multiple accidents, the drying issues, or anything else. The complete lack of communication, combined with the dismissive attitude, is why I can't in good conscience recommend this place to other cat owners. I used to trust Bow Wow Meow with my sweet baby. After this experience, I don't anymore. I have no doubt the manager will reply to this review somehow trying to blame me for her own staffs issues like the tried to in her rude email to me! read more

We have been coming here for dog grooming off and on since 2017. The store experience is fine; this rating is for the grooming and customer service which seem to have been going downhill over the last few years. We had a really negative experience with the in-store manager recently that led me to posting this review. The last time Bow Wow Meow groomed our dog, we noticed fleas on him a few days after the grooming. He is over 10 years old and has never had fleas in his life so I strongly suspect he got them from the grooming area. After we found the fleas, I went back in to buy flea medicine and mentioned to the worker that I think he probably got the fleas from the grooming and they may want to sanitize the grooming area to kill any fleas. I didn't ask for compensation or anything, I just wanted to be helpful. The worker went to get the manager to update her on this. The manager came over all fired up and told me that there are fleas everywhere in the environment, he almost certainly did not get the fleas at Bow Wow Meow, and anyway it was my own fault for not giving him preventive flea medicine. [note: we had not been giving these meds to him since he's inside most of the time and does not interact with other dogs, so has few opportunities to get fleas. also, as a reminder, he has never had fleas over more than 10 years!] I was pretty shocked at this response. I left the store and am not planning to ever go back. The manager needs to have some serious training in interacting with customers. We have had a few other negative customer service interactions with the Bow Wow Meow grooming operation in the past, but this was the last straw. Also, the grooming prices have risen to almost $200. I understand that it's hard to find employees and so prices will rise, but you would expect a premium customer service experience for this price and I don't think they are providing that. read more

Final curtain call for Bow Wow Meow. Very disappointed. My dog has consistently come to Bow Wow Meow for grooming...they are aware he is a blind senior dog. I made an appointment for him to be groomed last week, unfortunately I had a flight delay and could not drop him off or pick him up but I have a friend who lives in town that volunteered to do this for me. I called Bow Wow Meow ahead of time and explained the situation and prepaid (and included a tip for the groomer). I asked them to take my number in case they needed to reach me. I heard nothing from them, and once I returned home, my friend showed me a screenshot of the note below stating they would no longer take santos for grooming because they "found that his age and body condition made the experience too stressful for him." What body condition? The fact that he is blind? I of course will place minimizing my dog's stress levels as the top priority but this feels unprofessional. They should have called me to explain the situation, especially because we are long time customers who have repeatedly come for grooming. I am officially hitting "paws" on Bow Wow Meow and will not return to this store. read more

So they now use an outside app for making appointments. It is a terrible app. You can't specify the service that you want. You can't actually schedule an appointment. You have to log in and ask for a date. They then come back with a cryptic message, typically saying it is not available on that date...then you have to go around and around again. What is the point? Makes the customer do all the work. I have been a customer of both stores for years. They know that we come in regularly and spend thousands per year for two dogs. I asked for a grooming on a particular date. They know this would be when I asked for a groom. They send back a cryptic text saying "for a bath". I didn't see the text so they just blew me off. Unfortunately they botched my man Nemo :-(. I included before and afters and the reference photos I showed the groomer all labeled. The staff was all kind to me, there was nothing really wrong customer service wise the people working the front desk were very sweet. I spoke to the groomer, and he did not talk very much so I just told him what I normally like to see when I get my dog groomed. I showed him some reference photos which I attached here of how I like him to look like (the reference photos are of him, so he has looked like that before) with emphasis on the round face. I kind of had a feeling what kind of hair cut this would be after the groomer's main takeaway was that I wanted it short. Yeah they basically buzzed my guy bald lol. And for the steep steep price of $132 (110+ tip). I really should've looked at the reviews better bc I found that my experience was pretty similar to others. I told the groomer that I didn't think he needed to trim his nails down, yet they clearly clipped them down even more leaving one of his quicks slightly bloody! Definitely won't kill him but after all the reviews ab them being rough (and them vehemently denying it lol) it's a bit unsettling. With time I've also noticed LOTS of bald spots from nicking to the skin. I feel as though there was no scissoring happening with my dogs groom-- it looks like it was all super sloppy (scary) clipper work. It seems like everything I communicated to the groomer went up in the air and I may as well have not spoken to him. This is super frustrating!!! When I go to a groomer I really need that communication to know my dog is in good hands. My dog now has a super uneven haircut and I'm just so overall disappointed in the experience and will not be returning. I would be happy to pay that amount if I was receiving a quality service, but I just really can't say I did. I would also like to point out that my dogs coat was and always is in great condition. I brush him regularly and he was totally matte free. I wash him frequently and have confirmed from other groomers that his coat is well maintained. I do not believe I was asking for too much, especially seeing as he was really not overgrown which you can see in the photos (taken within the week). Overall I wish the groomer would have said "I cannot give you that haircut". Or "I have never done this type of haircut before". I know it seems superficial to be upset about any haircut let alone a dogs haircut, but when I see such a bad job done on my dog it is a genuine concern of trust of people who should be caring for him! read more

I had Bow wow meow groom my boy in January trying to find a groomer closer to home as I was taking him across the Dumbarton for groomer every 3-4 weeks. The grooming apt was an early drop off and I had received a couple calls from the groomer around evening time nearly 6 hrs after his drop off to tell me my boy was being difficult and had severe matting. Long story short he was given a lions cut because I refused to have groomer cut him completely short. We are now in the month of May, and there has been very little hair growth and lots of hair damage to the parts cut down. He's actually gotten some bald spots and I'm very disappointed that I was told that he needed a short cut, the hair we did not cut which supposedly had matting is fine, I've been taking him to his regular groomer and she was pretty upset that I was told to cut him down so short when it can ruin their hair growth and cause alopecia. I'm surprised a groomer in Menlo Park recommended this for my boy. I paid over $160 with extra add ons because the groomer clearly couldn't handle an under 2lb pup. I am very unhappy with being told this was for the best and have had to deal with this bad advice. I reached out to the owner via email to never get a response. AVOID this place! read more

The staff here are very friendly and I understand that they do not make the rules, but this place is overbooked when it comes to grooming appointments and enough is enough. We love Katie. But I do not love my dog being sent home with a nicked face, 3/4 of the last appointments. One of the nicks required veterinary care. I don't think this is the groomers fault so much, they are obviously very busy and rushed. Maybe with the increase in prices it's time to stop booking so many grooming appointments to push people through. We tried Bow Wow Meow in San Carlos, then started to drive to Menlo Park, but we will not be back. We've taken our dog to see Dave at Bow Wow Meow for grooming for years now (with the exception of last year when we were living abroad). He used to get nice haircuts and there were no issues. However, with the past few, we've noticed our instructions aren't followed. We stress that we want his hair kept long (only a light scissor cut - no clippers!), however, they may go a bit shorter on his ears, feet, tail, and butt (sanitary cut) as those areas tend to grow more quickly. We just prefer the body and specifically his "sweater" and "pants" (arms and legs) kept long and fluffy. He came home today and his arms and legs are completely short (especially his legs). Ears are still incredibly long. Overall, the areas that were cut seem a bit uneven. I'm not sure where the disconnect was and why his cuts have been continuously getting worse but we won't be taking another chance. We'll be taking our dog elsewhere and we recommend you do the same. read more

We moved to Menlo Park in the past year and have been taking our dog here for bi-monthly grooming. Recently, we took him in for a groom and had a terrible experience - not only were unreasonable, unauthorized charges included on our bill, we had to go back to request a redo of some of the services. The manager was cold, unhelpful, and defensive and tried to charge us again (up to 3 times for the same service) for something they didn't do well. Will not be going back.... Given the price point, mobile groomers will come to you and many will do a better job. A little further away, there are groomers with more competitive pricing and a better attitude. I also noticed our dog came home with minor injuries after visiting this salon. Beware.... There's a pattern in the reviews and the groomers just seem careless and rushed. So sad about what used to be a good experience with a groomer. Today was the final straw. We have been grooming our dog at BWM for nearly five years. But over the past six months I noticed a pattern of upcharges. Each time an $15 upcharge was added to our $140 groom every time, despite our dog arriving ready for a groom, pristine and mat free. Given my experience with owning this type of dog for nearly 20 years, I know what a matted dog that takes extra work looks like, or even one with minor mats. BWM has been charging me lately no matter what. This is new and makes me feel like a sucker. Which I clearly am given I went back three times after I noticed and began to question this practice. This time I pointed it out going in at dropping off. Was charged anyway and today the dog was perfect. Good bye BWM, not only is your base price WAY out of line with market, upcharging on top of that and then arguing with your customer about their dog and their past experience is not good business. Trust in pricing in a service business is key to customer retention. Which is why I am going elsewhere. read more

They are the worst. I took one of my dogs there and they put a metal cord that was less than a foot long around his neck. It was tethered to a rod that required him to stand while waiting for them to start his grooming. When I picked him up, his neck was bleeding. When I called too let them know, they denied using that type of leash. They should be shut down as their abuse of animals is criminal. read more

I have been a loyal customer of the Bow Wow Polk street location in San Francisco for 5+ years (they're the best!) but recently moved down to the peninsula. Decided to try the Menlo Park location in hopes they were similar even though we lived a 30 min drive away, but was incredibly disappointed. Beware -- they won't stick to your appointment time and won't do anything to help accommodate it. We booked our appointment 3 weeks out (closest time available) and planned our day around the time slot since we have a newborn baby. Confirmed 3x leading up until the appointment via their mobile app and a phone call - we thought we were all good. Morning of the appointment (1.5 hrs before the drop off time) I get a text saying they are no longer able to take our pup at the original time but could "try to fit him in 5 hrs later, for a 4-5 hr appointment". When I called, the desk lady said that they had 7 other groomers in that day and that their "Bow Wow groomers tend to overbook themselves." None of them had local clients or schedules that could be moved around. While we would have taken the later appointment had we lived in the neighborhood, we couldn't accommodate the last minute notice (a day before would have been helpful), since we had a pediatrician appointment scheduled around the grooming appointment and needed to get our preemie newborn back home. An original 1pm pickup was now going to be a 6pm pick up. Further, the Grooming Manager gives a lot of attitude when trying to have a professional conversation about the issue. Another great quote "it's still a pandemic and we are still working things out" -- since our groomer was sick with COVID, I asked if the groomer was there the day before (with all the other groomers that were in today) and the manager wouldnt comment... read more
