I was in search of a specific Diplomatico Rum that I use for a rum cake. (A lot of rums arent vegan but this one is.) and I had already been in 4 different liquor stores in my area over the span of 2 days but this store had it for $48.98, a few bucks over average price for this brand, however desperate to make a rum cake to bring to a as an easy dish for a Superbowl potluck in a few days - I had to grab. At checkout I paid and I went to put it in my reusable bag and thought I had made it in when I grabbed handle but that fast it fell to the floor and shattered in front of their register. I was so apologetic and stayed in the area to keep watch of the spill while someone went for their mop. I looked for any glass pieces that may have flew, and I didn't want my foster dogs paws to track it around the store (especially on the wooden part on the other side of the store to make even more mess) - I patiently waited there for the employee - the one who initially greeted me in the store/ guided me to the rum section - to sweep it with a broom while I contemplated what I was going to do and internally began freaking out for I am on a nurse currently strike for 25 days now with no paycheck and money is already tight as it is (I just had to make a tough decision to defer/pause payments on my student loans allowing interest to accrue) so spending $100 today was not an option. Now I never had the happen to me in a liquor store, but I left embarrassingly, no one said anything to me - they didn't say anything about a replacement bottle. I mean even half off? I don't know. Just sucks - it was an unfortunate situation and I left sadly with tears in my eyes. UPDATE: Immediately after posting this the shop owner messaged me privately to coordinate a time to stop back in to get a new bottle for free. Was very kind and I so appreciate that. Last weekend, I stopped by Bowery & Vine not once but twice. I've lived in the neighborhood for a decade and always try to support small local businesses like this one. In the past, I've had poor customer service from a former employee who would judge my wine selections based on price, but I hadn't seen them in a while, so I decided to give the shop another chance. On Friday, I purchased a bottle of red wine. Then on Saturday, I made a special effort--going out of my way--to buy a $45 bottle of champagne for my friend's engagement celebration. I even worked with the same employee who had helped me the day before to select it. The bottle was placed in one of the store's wine bags, and I headed to the subway. The moment I stepped onto the platform, the bottom of the bag gave out, and the bottle SHATTERED everywhere. To say I was upset is an understatement. Not only did I have to clean up the mess as best I could, but I also had to buy another bottle uptown so I wouldn't show up empty-handed. Encouraged by the uptown wine shop, I returned to Bowery & Vine after the engagement party to explain what happened. I spoke to the same employee, expecting at least some level of understanding. Instead, I was met with indifference. The employee asked why I didn't bring back the shattered bottle--as if I was supposed to carry broken glass in their faulty bag to the engagement party and then back downtown. I asked if I could at least receive store credit, especially given my history of shopping there. The response? The best they could do was 10% off another bottle of the same champagne (which I no longer needed) or 15% off a basic red wine. This was not customer service. There was zero empathy and no real attempt to resolve the situation. I will NEVER shop here again and have already shared this experience with friends and neighbors--many of whom have also decided they won't be giving Bowery & Vine their business anymore. read more

I came in here to buy a bottle of champagne. I was vibing out to my headphones. A older lady with a hat pulls up on me and asks me if I need help. I told her I'm good. She keeps lingering. I ask her where I can find something hoping she'll go away. She gives me a bunch of reasons why what I want to buy sucks. She follows me like I'm gonna steal something. This makes me uncomfortable. I had a wonderful experience at Bowery and Vine. I went in here hoping to buy a bottle or two. The selection was incredibly vast with many options for each region and variety. They also have a variety of price ranges so you can find something good regardless if you want a more expensive bottle or something cheaper. I was impressed by that by itself. There was also a section in the front of the store where you can get discounts on wine that was good but had defective labels, which was an interesting idea. When I went, there was a whisky tasting going on -- they also had a really great selection of spirits! But what really made this place a 5 star shop for me was the service. Richard was incredibly helpful and showed us many different options based on what we were looking for. I ended up walking out with five bottles, that's how much I enjoyed their selection. Good selection and mostly decent prices, but the staff can be annoying. There's always someone there when you walk in to ask if you need help finding anything. That's fine. But then you say "no" and they'll follow you around and ask you again and again. It's really annoying. I can't tell if they're trying to rush people out or if they just treat everyone like a potential thief and hover around them. Makes it very uncomfortable to browse though. Came in on a blustery day after an amazing meal nearby, was looking for a night cap bottle. Their selection is amazing, and best part is that their refrigerated section also has good selections. If you're in that neighborhood, you're more than likely to be going to some house party or some kind of byob situation. Bowery hence is so centrally located to downtown happenings. We got two bottles: a Pinot from Oregon and Chappelet cuvée. We've been expanding our wine taste buds, and can't wait to open the Pinot. Hello I just wanted to let Someone know about the Terrible experience I had this afternoon while at the Bowery store I had just finished grocery shopping at whole foods so I had two bags of groceries. I went in to buy a bottle of wine and as soon as I got in the store, the lady told me I needed to put my groceries down because where I was there is a blind spot. I was puzzled by what she said but I complied and put my bags on the floor and I proceeded to purchase my wine. To be honest this is not my first time purchasing wine at this store and previously I had come In the store with groceries and nobody mentioned anything about blind spots. I am truly still upset about how this issue I feel like I was racially profiled by this lady. It does not make sense for me to think everyone with bags is asked to put their bags on the floor due to a deficiency in your surveillance system. Furthermore the issue of blind spots is not a customer issue, if this is a known issue then why not fix it-Than ask customers to put their groceries on a dirty floor and this is NYC where people's shoes trail in with all kinds of nasty things. It is 2023 and to think that stores/ businesses are still racially profiling customers is insane to me. As a human being all we ask for is a pleasant shopping experience and I was not afforded that. Yes the lady kept mentioning that they ask everyone to put their bags luggage on the floor but I think this was just an attempt to cover up her racist conduct. It's truly not a crime to be black and honestly I am reaching out to you to just inform you of my experience. I spent $10 in your store and honestly I came out of the store feeling like you guys don't even deserve my hard earned money. It's 2023 the lady in that store needs to do better. Excellent selection of spirits with some rather hard to get and obscure producers available. The wine selection is decent but could be better by having a large selection of higher end French and Italian options. Prices are a bit high compared to other shops on most items with some being completely out of whack. Worth stopping in if you are in the area. read more

After drinking sake around the area, we were looking for a place to pick some up to take back to the hotel so we could continue late into the night. We saw a Whole Foods and walked in but unfortunately, they only sell beer. Looked on Yelp and found Bowery and Vine right next door. It was pretty busy as it's the holiday season and a lot of people were picking up wine to take to their respective gatherings. I don't normally write 2-star reviews and if you look at the over 1800+ reviews I have written, I rarely give out 2-star because I know that most businesses are really trying to help the customer out while also eking out a difficult living in NYC and some establishments live or die by Yelp reviews. But with that said, I really had a less than average experience here. Currently, I am looking for some bourbons for a very serious bourbon drinker. I called the store in the morning and asked about a few different kinds of bourbons (namely Noah's Mill and Elmer T Lee). The man on the phone was very helpful and knowledgeable, so this store gets 1-star for his excellent customer service. Later in the day, I came into the store to pick up the Noah's Mill ($53). I was immediately greeted by an older gentleman who was very helpful and knowledgeable in directing me to the bourbon selections. And indeed, they have quite a nice selection (including Jefferson, Elijah Craig, Breckenridge, Hudson Baby, etc). Another star for his helpful service. But what ensued after this was an all down-hill experience. I wanted to look at some wines and was browsing around looking at all the selections, but one of the salesman was basically riding my ass and watching me like a hawk. I couldn't even browse without him invading my personal space. Finally, he asked if he could help me find a wine. I was eyeing a bottle of Barone Di Villagrande Etna Rosso DOC ($22) and asked if this is the only kind of Etna Rosso they carry, and he told me yes. He then wanted to direct me to a Syrah, telling me it was similar to an Etna Rosso and then said to me, "it is high-tech." And since I did not understand what that meant, I asked him to explain. He then told me that "hi-tech" means that there is temperature control for processing the grapes. In which I reply, "interesting, but that isn't natural, not sure how I feel about it." He then tells me, "wine is a big business and this is the trend of how wines are made." He then asks me if I have ever tried a German Pinot Noir, and I said, "no." I asked if it was more spicy, in which he responds flatly, "no, it is ashy." At this point, we aren't having the best chemistry, but I decide to show him a pic of an Etna Rosso I really enjoy, and then he mutters something about "IGT." I ask if there is something similar in the store to the Etna Rosso I like, and then he points me back to the original bottle I was eyeing, "this is similar to the one you like, it is DOC, like the one in the pic!" And he seems really angry and annoyed. Good customer service is a clearly lacking in this salesman. I pick up the original bottle I wanted and move to the register to pay for both of my bottles. No issues with check out. But what strikes me as odd is why this salesman had a clearly belittling manner towards me, and he wasn't really trying to educate me (I am not a wine expert), or be helpful. Maybe it was just a bad day, but honestly, I had a less than mediocre experience (and I felt like everyone was trying to rush me out) and with so many other wine and spirits shops in the city, I have a choice where to spend my money and I won't be coming back here to give them my business. read more

So remember how in my PDT review I mentioned that I have a special talent for unknowingly picking out the most expensive thing? This special talent reared its ugly head again yesterday at B&V. Believe it or not, scientists are not so rich. Usually the bottles of wine I buy fall in the $10-15 range, and I was happily perusing a rack of what looked like $12ish bottles (big plus for B&V, many bottles under $20) when I settled on a nice-looking Pouilly Fume. However, that smile disappeared when it rang up at $25! How do I always manage to do this? Now, I realize that $25 isn't the most expensive bottle of wine you could find, nor is it breaking the bank here (and if you read the PDT review, you'll know that I spent $22 on ONE DRINK), but still, it's more than I normally spend, and $10 more than everything else on the rack there. But since she'd already swiped my card, I decided not to make a fuss and took it home anyway. You know what? It was delicious. Easily the best white wine I've had in recent memory--complex, crisp, and just a tiny bit sweet with a touch of honey and pear flavor. I would spend $25 on it again. Now, since this is the first REAL review (read: not shilling--shame on you B&V! This cost you a star), I suppose I'd better stop blathering on about myself and put in something useful here. B&V is very pretty inside--high, pressed-tin ceilings and lots of light. They don't have a huge selection, but they do, as mentioned above, have a good stock of affordable wines, and a small but relatively good-quality selection of liquors. The booze is off to the side in two little nooks called the "liquor library", which I thought was pretty cute, and their bourbon selection (by which I judge all liquor stores) was decent. They even had hard-to-find Pappy Van Winkle 20-year, so points for that. The arrangement of the store, however, is maddening. Whites and reds are not separated, and the only thing to tell you where to find the region you're looking for is a tiny little flag with the country's colors on it. And when there's no breeze for the flags to blow in, a limp Italian flag doesn't look all that different from a limp French flag, making it hard to figure out where to go. Get some signs, people!! I like reading, not recalling 8th grade social studies class. Basically, the fact that the wine I chose was so good is what's saving B&V from being 2-starred. People weren't all that helpful, meaning nobody spoke to me at all until I was paying, even though I was walking around with a confused look on my face trying to read the flags. However, I'll probably go back, given its convenient location near Whole Foods and the F train. I'm just going to pay closer attention to the price tags next time. read more

What a truly fantastic little find this was! After getting shot down in the wine department at the neighboring Whole Foods, the cheese guy suggested we hit up this place to score some grape juice. And so we did. Upon entering, we were met with a sassy hello from the fellow working here and after asking if they had any screw tops, he quickly rolled his eyes (in a truly playful way) and pointed us towards the wine openers. From there we asked for a recommendation for a full bodied spicy blend and he pointed us to the Riojas and the Malbecs. What impressed me most is that he pointed us towards the $11-$18 range. A nice change from some wine stores that try and sell you on the pricey bottle instead of the quality bottle. As for that bottle, ooooh yummy, it was exactly what we were craving and it was fantastic. If only I had written down what it was, because at $11 it was a steal! Definitely come here. Went here Friday night. Spent about 30 minutes talking bourbon, whisky and rye with an incredible salesman who knew so much. I got an education and made two purchases. Van Brunt Stilhouse American Whiskey which he said to snap up. Pricey little bottle but I should have bought the other one too. I had selected a barrel aged Manhattan from Utah that I bought there before. Loved it so I bought another. They have tastings and a great selection in a small store. I never leave her empty handed. Close to the subway so I can pick up on the way home. Would have bought more but I had my hands full for the journey home. read more

Maybe I just had a bad experience but I was not impressed with this place at all. Like another reviewer - the second I walked it some guy followed me throughout the store with suspicious eyes. Did he ask me if I needed any help? Eh, no, that would have been nice though. The selection was pretty good but the prices are nothing special. If I wanted to steal wine, I'm not going to walk into a store with literally what seemed like 25 employees. While my heart belongs to New York in so many ways, as a Californian, I don't get why you dudes can't just sell beer, booze and wine in supermarkets?! Why make it so difficult to get your crunk on? At least Bowery and Vine somewhat rectifies that inconvenience by being just around the corner from Whole Foods and a skip and a hop (maybe two) from my apartment. Couple that with a wonderful assortment of wine, sakes and liquors, always a plethora of knowledgeable staff on hand, totes reasonable prices (especially their bargain bin, tee hee) AND best of all, wine and cheese tasting in the evenings on Fridays and my friends, we got ourselves a winner! I have shopped here a long time. They know who I am. Live at parisi bakery.. I dropped a bottle of wine after I purchased. I never expected them to replace. They would at Astor wines, but this is a smaller wine store. My problem was the reaction. The ex's school teacher freaked and came to front desk. The woman at front desk was very gracious. Exceptional selection of scotch and bourbon. They have Laphroaig Quarter Cask and Black Maple Hill, for example, neither of which is easy to find. Unfortunately, the prices are ridiculous. A bottle of Black Maple Hill that I used to purchase regularly in San Francisco for $34 was priced at $56 here. Great selection, but be ready for the blow to your wallet. read more

I have shopped at this Wine and Liquor store for several years now. It first attracted me because of its good quality off - price wines. However, they really sold me with their small but well-chosen liquor selection. I am something of a rye-freak, and find rye difficult to find in most liquor stores. B &V has several varieties at different price points as well as a super selection of vodkas and gins. The carry many of the new locally distilled spirits as well. They deliver, give discounts for large orders, and have a knowledgeable staff, who have helped this wine neophyte choose for parties and thanksgivings for years. I seldom review for Yelp - but in this case I wanted to make an exception. If you live in the area around Whole Foods on Houston and Bowery, there are few liquor stores that can tope Bowery $ Vine. read more

Here's what they have going for them: - Reasonably large selection that covers most bases, and even includes a few off the beaten track choices. - Under $15 bottles well represented. This is my favorite wine store right now. They always have a great selection and I'm able to find three or four bottles in my price range that I haven't yet tried. The head saleswoman is very knowledgeable and has steered my towards some excellent bottles. She is also good at keeping the terrarists in check - especially the ones with huge chips on their shoulder who are always paranoid about being "watched" - so you will be totally safe inside the store. My second visit and first review. I walked away with a Maker's Mark for $30. This place is spendy. I went in for spirits. This is the place for specialty spirits for sure. I saw many boozes I've gotten at gastropubs around the country. The props are for careful displays of interesting products on the spirits side. Winos make up your own minds about this place.
