We were in the neighborhood for an appointment at a dental lab and had about an hour to wait…read morebetween procedures. Not having had lunch we figured let's check a few local eateries. When I checked Howley's on yelp I was surprised that there were so many negative reviews. Howley's is managed by the Sub-Culture Group, and we dine regularly at Kapow in East Boca and Dada in Delray Beach, also managed by Sub-Culture. And while this is an entirely different type of food, I still wanted to take a chance and check them out. And we did and were pleased and more than satisfied. First, the decor is truly funky. I'm not sure if everything is from the 50's when they first opened, but it sure looked like it was. The restaurant was spotless, and the toilet was as well. The AC was strong which was appreciated. Artwork on the walls was not our style but must have been from a local artist. Ceiling fixtures were similar to what my parent's had in the late 60's. Jessica was our server and she was professional and positive in her attitude. Could not have asked for anything more. Decided to order a turkey club on rye bread ($15) with fries which were included and share it. Some of the reviews addressed how large their portions were and photos confirmed it. Jessica brought out the sandwich which was split in the kitchen with an ample amount of fries on each plate. The fries were delicious. Obviously freshly made and not sitting around, they were crisp without being overcooked. The turkey was described as fresh roasted sliced turkey and it sure was. Bacon was plentiful and crispy along with fresh lettuce and tomato. Mayo served on the side as requested. The sandwich was so large that I was only able to eat a half of my half, taking the rest home for the following day. Ordered a corn muffin and chocolate chip muffin to take home and each was fresh and delicious. ($5-$6) Howley's certainly warrants a visit if you are in the area and not seeking a trendy looking place which exists all over West Palm where the food may not be as good but the vibe is what is being sold with mediocre food. There was an on-site manager who visited our table to make sure all was good. I neglected to ask her name and apologize - she was welcoming and clearly on top of her managerial duties. Would I return? Sure would. And endorse fellow helpers to check them out.

I also tried a cup of their chicken noodle soup, which I enjoyed. The steak was cooked perfectly and came with crispy onions on top. The mashed potatoes had a very nice texture, and you could tell that the gravy was homemade. The green beans were crisp and flavorful.

The service was quick as 11 am rush can be with a wait of 10-15 minutes at most. The smoothie was super refreshing and filling, I thought it was a bit tart but it was still good. I asked for a mug again and they said I had to pour it in myself due to it's too hot to carry? The mug comes on a serving plate .. that's what the plates are for to carry it. They maybe had last issue of people spilling or burning but you don't throw away the common sense experience of drinking out of a mug vs coffee fist in a wax lined / plastic cup. The whole experience is lost and the name means Pure Life.. this is like in nyc where all the cvs shelves are locked up because of a few criminals. Instead of dealing with the problem the problem is passed down to everyone. I went to Maman for my second cup because Puta Vida would not refill my glass cup without first putting it into another throwaway cup. The waste. Such a beautiful place and yet this one simple thing to me is away from core values of a business. My two cents .

The bartender was easy to talk to and gave a couple suggestions without making it feel like a sales pitch. Both dishes came out pretty quickly even though the place started filling up during happy hour. The bruschetta had a nice mix of sweet and savory, and the avocado toast was fresh without being overly dressed up. I liked the overall pace of the service since nobody rushed me to order more once I finished eating. Service was also very slow, even when it wasn't busy. Everything took longer than expected and seemed disorganized. On top of that, the bartender was rude and unwelcoming. I was also charged for another person's drink without being asked or informed; which was unacceptable and felt careless. The staff seemed "blind" to how to properly run a restaurant. For the prices being charged, I expected much better food, service, and attention to detail. Unfortunately, I will not be returning.

But other visits were good too and the bowl is $13.50. I love this spot. It has traffic but still pretty quiet and I prefer to eat outside. Parking is easy when I don't walk. We also grabbed two oatmeal raisin cookies and a chocolate chip cookie as well as a gratitude drink Meraki Juice. The drink is 100% cold pressed juice that includes celery, spinach, parsley, kale, apple, grape, lemon and mint. This restaurant must've opened fairly recently as it is absolutely brand new looking in extremely clean in an inviting environment. The associate taking our order could not have been nicer as we just arrived just prior to them closing. A true professional. The Akai bowl was very good, perhaps a bit more blueberry and strawberry than I wanted as this creates a little bit acidity; but, it was overall extremely refreshing and high-quality and very satisfying. Overall, this was an awesome experience, and we will be back to this location in the future. A++.
