I've had nothing but excellent service from all the staff here. They are very clear in communication and what you are looking to have done. I got the sclerotherapy for spider veins and it was minimally painful. Everyone from the front desk staff to the people who bring you in to the rooms are very friendly. I've always felt comfortable and cared for. They went above and beyond when I switched insurances and helped me with scheduling. I am so impressed with Dr. Derrick and the staff AND the boutique feel of the office from start to finish. It doesn't feel like you're going to a doctors appointment in any of the less desirable ways, but definitely feels like it in all the good ways that reinforce you're getting the best quality care. A good friend of mine found BoxBar while researching her own venous condition and is already seeing major improvements in her quality of life. I went in with my mom and the staff was great at getting us scheduled back to back since I'm the driver. Our successive appointments are scheduled the same way, and they really care about being accessible. I also have my own slew of rare autoimmune diagnoses, and a couple are comorbid with their own vascular risks / stroke risks so I wanted to get a thorough assessment with some hard data. I made an appointment to see Dr. Ellen after rave reviews from a friend. I mean reviews that made me think Dr. Ellen is a MUST see! I scheduled my appointment and asked if I should bring anything with me and was told to just bring myself. In making the appointment I was asked for my email, gave it, and assumed it would be to send me a reminder about the appointment. I made my appointment and was excited because it would happen before the end of 2021 and since I had met my deductible, to me, this visit was almost free! A few days later I received a call that they had to reschedule my appointment due to the snow. I was offered an appointment in January and asked if they could see me before the tend of the year and was told that wasn't possible with Dr.'s schedule. Okay, fair enough. My new appointment was Wednesday, Jan. 5th. In the meantime, I started getting messages about filling out information about myself on their portal via email. I was never told about the portal but wanting to be compliant and spend (presumably) less time filling out the portal information in the office I worked to get it filled out before going to the appointment. Because we are in covid, life is crazy now and everything seems infinitely more complicated I didn't get to start the portal until the day of my appointment. Mind you I had received a few reminder emails to get it done. I called their office and left a message that I was going to be starting the portal information albeit a bit late, but would be attending my appointment, which was the same day. In starting the portal, I was prompted to upload front and back images of my driver's license -, my insurance card, and add in my SS#. I know a lot of this is required but wasn't very comfortable scanning it into a system to be saved. There are breaches of confidential information regularly, it seems. I called and left a message that I had concerns about the portal questions. There was no option to skip, come back to a section later, or not provide the information. I continued. I was soon asked to sign off on Dr. Ellen's office using a copy of my signature. There was no explanation as to why - and this was not something I'd ever been asked to give before, and it was NOT a statement to acknowledge my understanding of their policies and practices. It was not clear WHY it was needed but again there was no option to skip, come back later or not provide anything but "Yes, I agree." This seemed quite odd to me, and having anxiety I started to panic about what all this information was for, why was it needed and why didn't they tell me about this information being needed? I had already called twice and received no response. After deciding I HAD to give them permission to use my signature, I moved on to the allergy section. Being allergic to the glue on patch's I searched for this and could not find it. I also couldn't find a way to enter this information because it didn't fit into the menu on options on the drop-down menu. I was really starting to panic about what was this all about ...? Why wasn't there a space to enter information about allergies that didn't fit into their pre-chosen options? The next section was to allow them to send me communications marketing things that might be of interest to me (I believe through) some company they work with....no thank you. I realized I was not going to be able to make this appointment. My appointment was at 2:00 PM. Nothing was making sense except they were not good at communicating what they needed me to do, and this was too much stress and anxiety for me. I was frozen - in a panic - couldn't get myself to the appointment and felt the only option was to go to sleep. I had to escape. Making a phone call in a panic attack is not an option. I received a voicemail at 2:30 PM after my appointment from Angie letting me know I missed my appointment; she'd be charging me the $100 missed appointment fee and to call back and reschedule. There was no mention of my call asking for more information about having concerns about the portal questions. It was becoming clear this office was only focused on the bottom line, they choose money over patient communication and wellbeing. Okay, feeling like I could handle a phone call and wanting to find a way to make it work so I could see Dr. Ellen, I called her office the next day. I spoke to Angie and explained that I'd had a panic attack, that I have incredible anxiety, that the information requested on the portal was confusing at best, could they drop the $100 charge if I rescheduled. She indicated this was okay, to hang on and she'd get my file. When she returned a few minutes later she told me she could not remove the $100 charge because I had acknowledged the no-show fee and didn't call. Oh gosh, where to begin... So, as of right now (7/17/21) I am smack dab in the middle of treatment for my varicose veins at BoxBar Vascular. For the longest time-at least fifteen years, but probably closer to twenty-I've dealt with the self-consciousness and embarrassment which frequently arises with this vascular condition. Because both my mom and grandma endured the same thing in their lives, I'd always been well aware that sooner or later there was a chance my, uh, prominent veins would become more than just a cosmetic annoyance and evolve into something which caused me physical pain. Well, as middle age set in (I'm 44), the pain came knocking on my door this past year. So, when that finally happened, I knew it was time for me to see a doctor and learn if there was anything I could do. Look, I'm a fairly dramatic, loud person in life, but when it comes to anything medical I become a shrinking violet. Frankly, I'm a neurotic mess when it comes to doctors-for absolutely no reason at all, I always anticipate the worst, and, in turn, will do almost anything I can to avoid them. So, when I tell you without the slightest bit of hyperbole at all that Dr. Derrick is bar none not only the kindest, most empathetic and nurturing doctor, but also one of the kindest, most empathetic and nurturing PEOPLE I've ever met, I can assure you even that feels like an understatement. Seriously, she's that good. I've undergone two procedures for my legs so far and both times I've honestly felt less like a patient and more like I'm visiting a dear friend whom, y'know, also just happens to have a knack for fixing longstanding medical issues. I know I'm probably making this review longer than need be, but I really can't say enough about what a wonderful experience this has been (and still is) and how grateful I am to have discovered BoxBar. And it's not just Dr. Derrick whom I feel indebted to! EVERY SINGLE PERSON working in the office has been so kind to me, so helpful with any questions or concerns I've had, that it feels like a crime (told ya I was dramatic) not to give a shout out and big thank you to them as well. There's something to be said for leading with love and kindness and the way BoxBar treats their patients offers evidence for that in spades. If you have any vascular concerns or issues in your life, please do yourself a favor and seek this practice out. Because medical issues are so intimidating and so personal, most of us are afraid of seeing someone and I think a lot of that stems from feeling like we won't be "seen." Needless to say, that's not the case with Dr. Derrick. Not the case at all. Also, the cookies are pretty dang awesome. This review is way over due. I found Boxbar because I had a bulgy vein on the front of one of my legs (thanks mom and grandma!) I've posted a picture of my vein before it was treated, it's gone now! I will post a recent picture that shows its gone after I shave my legs. :-) Ok so I had gone to my primary care provider who had told me it was just cosmetic and no concern. It was bothering me still after awhile so I took matters into my own hands and google mapped varicose veins in this area. Up popped Dr. Ellen Derrick's office and based on reviews (I'm sorry it took me so long to write one myself!) and pictures, I could tell this place was different. I was so right. Coming into the office changed my life in more ways than one. I was really impressed, not just because of the cool wallpaper or because of ALL of Dr. Ellen's plaques on the wall but really with how Dr. Ellen was as a person. She explained what was causing my bulgy vein, she made me feel seen by confirming my thoughts that this wasn't just cosmetic and she made me feel like a friend. After an ultrasound, which was done in office, my veins proved to be more damaged underneath then appearing on the outside. This explains why my legs hurt so bad when I stood for long periods of time. To prevent anymore big ones I proceeded on with treatment of all 3 that needed it. Dr. Ellen explained all the options for treatment and answered all of my questions. I did the Venaseal, which is medical glue (also done in office), and the downtime was so minimal! It was also such an easy procedure that I chose not to go to sleep, I took pre meds to relax but it was so quick and interesting to watch and to chat with Dr. Ellen while she worked. She is so efficient and qualified, kind and real. People can get upset about small schedule snafus but I've never had that problem here and the reality of what we are living in right now (a pandemic) it's a miracle any business can run at all let alone a newer one like this. This place is stunning. If you are into the french way of beauty treatments, this is your spot. The staff is gorgeous, and not in a robot barbie sort of way. Dr. Ellen Derrick is the cream of the crop. She's an expert, and an artist. She guided me into a procedure that was right for me, and less invasive (and expensive) that what I thought was needed. I'm a runner fitness guy in my 20s with gnarly vericose veins. Or so I used to be! After getting referred here by a PT who saw my epic bulgy veins, I found myself in doctor Derrick's office. Cozy. Ellen greeted me with a cool mix of professional, curious, excited, and clinical. An easy ultrasound confirmed the extent of the veins, and after wearing compression socks for a few months, insurance approved removal surgery. I had two sessions of lots of poking, one on each leg, and that was painful, but easy. However, given the extent of my veins, they ran out of numbing medication and I had to come back! Fortunately, I was given the chance to be the first to get that sweet sweet general anesthesia. It made the procedure so much easier. The personal touch is real here. I felt seen and cared for. I came to this office to have a vein removed, purely cosmetic, so I was willing to private pay. Initially I really liked Dr. Derrick, she seemed very knowledgeable and I liked her enthusiasm. She said I was a good candidate for Venaseal. She gave me the cost for the procedure but failed to mention the nearly $1500 for the ultrasounds and office visits. After my first ultrasound I scheduled the follow up appointment as a phone visit. The appointment was for 10:45, she called at 12:15- 1 and 1/2 hours after the scheduled time and I received a bill for $250. I would think if you charge a phone visit like an office visit, you would treat it as such. When I arrived for the procedure the person at the front desk had me sign the financial responsibility, to which I said " that will be all it, as it is private pay", so I am confused as to why after I was on the table and sterilized she came into the room and needed my credit card which she had to go into my purse to get, very violating. When I left after the procedure Dr. Derrick said there were no complications and wanted me to come back in 2 days for another ultrasound, which I did, after which I was put in a room where I sat for over an hour until I just left. So here I am 19 weeks later and I still have the same vein that I went in for, so I paid nearly $5000 for nothing. Very disappointing experience. read more

After two pregnancies at twenty seven years old I had developed varicose veins that really began to bother me. It was easy to see that Jackie and Dr. Ellen truly had my best interest at heart. As soon as Dr. Ellen assessed my leg she suspected I had a condition that effected my vein function. We started the process of compression socks, followed by ultrasound which proved she was right about the suspected condition. Dr. Ellen went above and beyond to make sure she gathered all the information my insurance needed to approve the treatment of my condition. I am SO grateful for her attention to detail and fantastic bedside manner. I have gone through the treatment in both of my legs and though I am still a little bruised up, I am so happy with the results.
