Let me start by saying I love arcade games! I gave three stars because of the issues with some of the machines. The Mario Cart driving game (not the one on the PlayStation) only had one of the two driving stations that was working properly and only one of the two air hockey tables was working also. One of the skee-ball machines took my coins, and with two of the four basketball stations the balls kept piling up in the nets. It was a bit frustrating to go to play something you really want to play and it doesn't function properly. Overall thought, I had fun and the staff was friendly. I would go back. read more

What a throwback experience. Took me back to the 80s when we'd spend time at the arcades. First, the pizza was very good. It had its burnst edges but incredibly, it tasted really good. Service was fast and easy. Played Wizard of Oz pinball machine, Star Wars, and other pinball machines, Lady Pacman, skeeball, and air hockey. We had such a wonderful evening. The weather was pretty nice so we sat outside on their patio area overlooking the baseball field. I didn't find the prices to be outrageous for either the games, food or drinks. Durham is in the midsts of it's gentrification crisis so of course now we've got a Barcade. It's way better than an axe throwing place, but at the sametime it does feel like a trend and a bit out of place being in the shadow of the old ballpark. Here's the thing though, it's a pretty sweet set-up. They have some legit amazing wall artwork and a great collection of games. I love their selection of retro games, but they could use more fighting games (something along the lines of more recent stuff from the Street Fighter series, like a SF Alpha or Street Fighter VS. X-Men). They've got the obnoxious neon lined racing games for the kids who need something that literally shakes the coins out of their pockets. Overall though, they've got a very good selection of games for the size of the place. Unlike the Raleigh location there's room to walk around and see what kind of games they have without it feeling claustrophobic. Downside, the dimly lit, claustrophobic, too many games packed into a small space experience is the ideal arcade experience that Generation Y will never appreciate (shoutout to all my peeps who grew up with TILT at South Square Mall). Upon my recent visit here I didn't have the food, but their pizza smelled delicious. A friend and I were watching the Women's World Cup (I look forward to Future President Megan Rapinoe btw) and with it being spacious enough here we were able to watch the game and catch up on each other's lives. It's a good place for groups since there's food for all and space to enjoy said food. The downside is the parking. Good luck with that mess. Boxcar is one of my favorite spots in Durham! I love that it can be a blast for any type of group and at anytime of day. I often come here at night with friends, and there are great drink deals and a really lively environment with all the games. I also come on Sunday afternoons, when kids and dogs are allowed to roam, and there's a very different but equally as fun vibe. There are a lot of families eating lunch and playing games outside, so bring a big group! Outdoor seating for socializing, if you like. Variety of standing arcade games and set up for gaming system play as well. Machines operate off tokens which are equal to quarters. This was so much fun. We came here and had the truffle mushroom pizza. It served its purpose and wasn't anything to get excited about. However we came to play games and hang out. My girlfriend had a white claw and I enjoyed one of the ciders. The lady working the bar was sooo rude. She checked our ID's each time we ordered a new drink even though I had an open tab and your ID is checked when you walk in. It was very frustrating. The games were fun its $2 to play basically any game which is a little steep but I get it. We played cornhole for a bit which was such fun but also in the direct sunlight so that was so brutal we had to go back inside. We didn't know it was here the first time, but after it happened a second time, we made the connection. So excited that Boxcar came to Durham! I love the one in Raleigh but it is always so crowded - the one in durham is busy but you can actually move around most of the time. I love the skeeball and the air hockey, and my husband loves all the classic arcade games. My parents love the pinball - there's something for everyone, and it's pretty reasonably priced. Great place to kick it with friends! We went recently and enjoyed the atmosphere as well as the games and drinks. I did really appreciate the full bar (decent drink selection) and pizza available for purchase as well. As for the games themselves, we enjoyed the air hockey however one of them seemed to be on the fritz the last time we went and made playing on it not as fun. (Really long lines of groups waiting to play). As for the other games, I do wish they were more group friendly (they have skee ball, air hockey, basketball and a few others but many are for two players). While easy to get to, parking can be a bit tricky, I suggest one of the well lit lots nearby (like across the street). Overall a fun place to go to with a group looking to enjoy a night out together! read more

An employee who identified himself as "Sam the Security Manager" constantly walked around enforcing Covid regulations on customers. He was as rude as he could possibly be about it. I witnessed him approach several different people and tell them to "sit down." Sam only started to act like he had manners and curb his power trip after I asked him his name. I understand that Boxcar has to abide by regulations to stay open but there is a customer friendly way to go about it. Would definitely steer clear of this place until Sam "gets some" or receives remedial training. read more

It's sooo fun here! In a kind of up-and-coming side of Downtown Durham located around the corner from Fullsteam and Motorco Boxcar is a super nice addition to the Durham bar and fun scene! IDs seem to always be checked when you walk in the door, making lines and times at the bar much better, the place is filled with tons of arcade games for all ages! All you need is a cash or a credit card to exchange at the token machines, 4/$1. Most games are between 1-2 tokens with pinball being on the "pricier" side at 4 tokens per play. The bar wraps around the inside wall and is very well staffed with long menus which I've noticed definitely get updated with the latest beers on tap. They also have a daily special board which you should definitely check out. Two of the best things are the free unlimited self-serve popcorn and the made to order pizzas!! The only (minor) complaint I have is the close proximity of DDR to the air hockey tables, which makes it super hard to hear the beat of the music you're trying to keep up with! Other than that, I always have a really fun and not too costly time at Boxcar! read more

It is essentially a hipster 'Dave and Busters' that caters to the new upper-class yuppies moving in to Durham. There is a decent beer selection and pizza is good, though. My parents were in town who I havent seen in over a year since I moved here. Went to an escape room and had a blast and decided to check this place out after. The guy at the front desk asked for our id's and was very rude when my parents didnt want him to scan there ids. They've had a horrible experience with identity theft before so were very worried as to why there license with all of there personal info needed to be scanned instead of just checked to make sure they were over 21(news flash they are 65). We decided to leave because he was rude and we weren't going to spend our money at an establishment that treats new customers like that. Also we are all non drinkers.
