I just got in town for work and this is my first time living in another state. Before i would drive an hour to my previous barber and I have been going to him for over 10 years. I have always had bad experience with new barbers however I got so lucky picking this place! I paid $44 for my haircut however I am pretty used to this price but it included wash, facial, hot towel, style and product going in. They make it worth it for the price. I made an appointment only and was there 10 minutes early and after 5 minutes the owner Rob came up and apologized for wait and offered to do the haircut. After years of my spouse having hair cuts at this location, I decided I would switch things up and have mine done here as well. I was, definitely, not disappointed and 'could not be happier with my results - I'm now hooked! While there, I was observing the number of other individuals and the style cuts they were receiving. I was a Men's Dept customer for two and a half years. I don't know the reason behind the mass firings and got a nasty response when I asked about Sada. Came in got the attitude, got introduced to what looked like a 15 year old kid with a "don't worry I can cut your hair" comment and left. I don't know the old or the new owners and frankly don't care. They don't cut my hair the stylist does. What I do know is that acting flippant about my business is bad business. UPDATE per owners comments: Brad manipulates statistics in an interesting manner. How does 50 years of experience translate to the services of a single stylist? Unless your entire staff and yourself are serving one customer all at once, the experience argument is irrational. How does an entire staff turnover, except through mass firings? If the stylists are all booked solid why the new Groupon? I find it interesting that your immediate reaction to my comments is that I am to blame for the rudeness of your staff. read more

I have been a customer of Men's Spa for about a year now. They always provided good service and kept me happy....until tonight. I made my appointment online as a I always do, but when I arrived for my 7:45pm haircut they told me that there was no record of my appointment. I told them of my booking online, but no dice. Jacob (my usual stylist) comes over and starts blaming me for probably booking on the wrong site and coming in without a confirmation call from the front desk. He then said my appointment didn't make sense because they close at 8 anyway (well clearly you can book appointments starting at 830 online...just tried it). His attitude coupled with the poor attitudes of the receptionists was very off-putting (downright rude) and completely unacceptable and not how a long-term customer should be treated. The staff then begrudgingly tried to book me another appointment as they clearly had better things to do than figure out my situation or even apologize for the mishap. (I told the receptionist to e-mail me my confirmation and she said she did, but couldn't even do that) As I walked out all I got was a quick "cya" from my stylist. I immediately called back and cancelled my newly booked appointment (which they made for the following night instead of the next week as I requested). I will not be returning to Men's Spa. Long story short, a customer who suffers a mishap with your business deserves an apology and shouldn't feel like a nuisance. If you want real customer service you won't find it here. read more

I was a Men's Dept (now Men's Spa) customer for about 2 years. I was given the year of grooming package as a holiday gift December 2012 and 3 months later the salon is sold and my stylist (along with all of the stylists) are fired. It is now Men's Spa and under new ownership. They have completely changed the staff, services offered, and vibe of what used to be a great experience at Men's Dept. Like someone said in a earlier review, the vibe of this salon is now completely different and it's a vibe that makes me feel almost uncomfortable. I went in to get my haircut (for the 1st time under new ownership) and was placed with someone who I honestly believe had never cut men's hair before. (The Men's Spa receptionist will tell you that their stylists have been cutting hair for years and are very experienced. This is strange to me because all of the stylist look like they are 16-21 years old) After trying my best to not belittle the stylist too much during the haircut, I finally just shut my mouth and hoped for the best. Unfortunately, it was the worst haircut I've gotten in a long time and I had to another salon to get it fixed. A week after my terrible haircut at Men's Spa, I received two phones calls (within a few days of each other) from friends I referred to Men's Dept and who had been patrons for more than a year. Like me, they were both very upset with the change and had bad experiences during their haircuts with the new Men's Spa stylists. I told them that the majority of the GREAT stylists who had been fired from Men's Dept had moved onto Bespoke Salon in Edina at 50th and France. In regards to my Year of Grooming Package- I tired calling in to inquire about getting my packaged prorated and refunded back to me. I have used 4 of the 13 haircuts and was hoping to get the 9 unused haircuts refunded back to me. The person I spoke to seemed to be newer than anyone else there and couldn't answer my questions. In my frustration as all salons in the downtown area are booked so I asked for a recommendation nearby, only to not be told anything more than their booking policy. I know the policy. You're booked. Not a place I would return to for massage....staff is not very professional and don't cater to the needs for the customer. I decided to give this a try as I get massage frequently and this place was close to my office. I figured the special was a good way to give it a shot and see if I had found another place. When I got there the therapist wasn't in yet so I had to sit and wait....people were friendly enough, but bored and sitting around and not doing anything...one guys was eating his lunch at the counter and another was actually sleeping in one of the stylists chairs...just a level of unprofessionalism that makes you wonder who is running this. Then the massage - Ben showed up almost on time and got me set up in the room - I had ordered a 1 hour deep tissue massage and as he was getting setup and started to explain his technique (which wasn't deep tissue) I asked isn't this deep tissue?? He rudely interrupted me defensively to assure me he had been doing this a long time and his massage was as good. Well I can tell you it wasn't - and I was subjected to "energy" work and bells....which is fine if that is what you order, but has no pace in deep tissue work. There were parts of the massage that were ok, but I left feeling like a greased hog and never did get any deep tissue work.... To top if off when I went to leave I got to walk out the entrance through cigarette spoke as a client and stylist needed to get a smoke in. The Amazon special I responded to was a way to bring in a potential new client and I can tell you it didn't work because I won't be going back. read more

Attention to detail. People- and service-minded staff. All the makings of a strong business. It looks like the former Men's Dept. is in good hands under new ownership. As a big fan of the prior owner, I am happy to report that the new proprietor is just as focussed on expert technical cutting himself -- and probably more importantly, on educating his staff and developing talent. I have now enjoyed two haircuts with Brad. I appreciate that Brad, like other barbers I have liked in the past (former owner Kurt included) is that he has an opinion -- and he uses that opinion to consult you on what kind of haircut will work for you. It makes it simple for guys like me who are pretty easy going bust still want to look our best. Brad's team and the comfortable surroundings of the old shop will make for a continued great downtown stop for a men's haircut. I can't speak with any true authority on this final point -- as I've only heard rumors and read other comments here. But if there is an online smear campaign being levied against this new owner, I'd like to say that it's utterly disgraceful and distasteful. ***READ THIS: WELL ROUNDED REVIEW*** I have been a Men's Spa customer for several years now. After reading some of the other reviews I felt that I should also share my experiences. I highly recommend Brad or any of the other stylist if you're looking for a well done hair cut. the skill and precision seen by the cuts I get from Brad is unreal. I get stopped in public and asked where I get my hair cut on a regular basis. Never before have I had so many compliments on just a haircut! I now have several friends who get their hair cut there now based on how good and consistent my cuts are. I get an older style retro cut with a fade and a cut down the part (which by the way is a hot look right now you should go for it) and let me say when brad is done there isn't a single hair out of place. I let him run with his creativity and decades of experience and the results are always amazing. I have also seen some really awesome cuts done by Jake and Jagger (hope I spelled that right!) Mens Spa crew: Keep up the awesome work! AS FAR AS THE ONE STAR REVIEWS: Take them with a grain of salt. Have I run into scheduling issues? Yes, there have been several times where my appointment time had to be changed. That being said I was given at least a weeks notice and it was never an issue for me. I have always been treated with respect by the staff. There seems to be quite a few complaints about the ownership change. Many people, myself included can find change difficult and I'm wondering if some of those reviews aren't planted by former employees or one or two people who were upset about the change. The "I feel like someone is doing drugs in the back" comment seems both uninformed and judgmental. Did you see someone using drugs? I received a comprehensive consultation and my stylist Jake was the best I've ever had. Jake's color work is amazing and the products that the staff suggested were very high quality and made sense for my type of hair and the color treatment I received. I absolutely loved my visit. Today was my first time going to Mens Spa and I honestly had no idea what to expect after reading some of the mixed reviews on here, but I can say that being a normal kind of guy this places makes you feel real special. My stylist Megan was very informative and taught me a thing or two about my own hair. She knew exactly what style I was going for even though I came in with a head full of crazy hair and made my overall experience very good. In all they were very welcoming and I really liked my haircut. It was thoroughly cut and she took her time cutting it as if it was a piece of art carefully being perfected. I noticed it was the same with the two other customers next to me as well and the other stylists. The mini facial massage was real nice, as well as they're overall costumer service. It was nice to see the smile on my stylist's face afterwards because that let me know that she was proud of the work she did, as well as making sure I was happy with my haircut. I definitely recommend this place as I have been to low-end barbershops/saloons and higher-end ones and this has definitely been one of the better ones. Especially when dealing with thick wavy asian hair. I did have a scheduling mishap when I made my appointment and when I got there, but the situation was handled very well and honestly it wasn't a big deal. Made an appointment 36 hours ahead AND confo. Rushed to appointment so I could be punctual. Was offered a T-shirt's and beverage with no explanation(does one wear a T-shirt instead of cape for cut? I don't know because no one explained), then directed to sit in some ridiculously uncomfortable chairs in lobby. Waited 10 minutes PAST appointment, informed them I was leaving, there was no apology, no explanation, just a dismissive hand wave...? Keep in mind a cut is $45+. Looks like reviews in the past have questioned this establishments interest in a positive customer experience.Too bad, great location with the potential of attracting a consistent, stable clientele. Had a massage there a few months ago. It was my first professional massage ever so at first I had nothing to compare it to, but now I'm in a position to leave a review I was taken to a room at the back of the salon. No hardwood or tiles, plain concrete with a small dirty rug next to the massage table. The man doing the massage is super creepy. I can confirm that while rubbing back with one hand, more than once he tried to reach very close to inappropriate areas with the other. I was very uncomfortable and quite shocked honestly. Since then I have.been to many other massage places and never had anything like this happen. While I won't be going back to men's spa for a massage I really hope this doesn't happen to other customers. read more

UPDATE - I think it only fair that I re-review after finally having some services from the Men's Spa. After a harrowing scheduling ordeal, I finally was able to make an appointment for a haircut and facial that the spa did not cancel! (NOTE - I have still not be able to get a massage scheduled). The haircut and facial were both very good experiences, spectacular - NO! But very good! Jake cut my hair and did a very nice job. The facial was relaxing and worthwhile. I have increased my overall rating, but still feel they have a long way to go in order to improve the overall experience and ensure they are just pissing customers off with the scheduling issues. I have yet to have any services from this SPA, my entire review is simply based on my incredibly challenging scheduling experience! I called 2 weeks ago to schedule a Haircut, Facial and massage. My goal was to have them all before leaving on vacation. I was surprised to hear that this 'full service' Men's Spa could not accommodate a facial and massage on the same date, not due to their popularity and already being booked, but because the masseuse and facial technician don't work the same days! How can you call yourself 'full service' if a customer could never actually get a full range of services at one visit? While disappointed, I scheduled 2 separate appointments - one for a massage and one for a haircut ad facial, thankfully both of which could be scheduled prior to my vacation. Well, one day later I get a call from Paul stating that they needed to reschedule my Facial and Haircut appointment. The reason - on the day that got scheduled, they would not have ANY hair stylists working!!! WHAT?? NO STYLISTS! So I posed the question to Paul, how can you run a Full Service Spa/Salon with NO STYLISTS? He merely laughed and stated that's the way it was! I rescheduled for a day earlier, but was not happy with the interaction or the experience. Several days later, the day before my massage appointment, I get a call, again from Paul, stating they needed to reschedule my massage appointment because their masseuse was going to be out of the spa and they had no back up. SERIOUSLY Paul?? Again, Paul was very matter of fact, no regard to the rescheduling I had to do with my schedule to accommodate their wacky scheduling. This time, they had no ability to reschedule prior to my vacation as their masseuse only works 2 days a week. I was clearly agitated with the interaction, which did not seem to phase Paul in the slightest! At no time during either call, did Paul offer any form on compensation for my annoyance either in the form of additional services or even complimentary products. I have been in service related businesses long enough to know when you annoy a customer you better do something to offset that interaction if you have any chance of keeping them as a customer, obviously The Men's Spa simply doesn't care about their customers or their potential customers! read more

Worst massage of my life. The guy who I was assigned to George, was suuuuper creepy. The massage room was dingy, low budget loud hip hop music with a boom box. The floor had a rug, but seemed dirty. They Dont make you sign any paper work of waiver form before you go in, who odd is that?? The wosrt part was that this creeper George was trying to reach for my junk. As he rubbed my back, he would put his other hand underneath my pelvic bone, maybe 3 inches away from my dick. It was very uncomfortable and I had to tell him to stop. He goes, "oh, OK". It was an extremely uncomfortable experience! He also used waaay to much lotion, I still had a lot on me after I left. Never ever coming back. read more

Used a Groupon. Very good hair cut. Upfront advice about what would look best. Appreciated the "clipper over comb" only technique. Modern atmosphere, with free coffee or lemon water available. I had an absolutely wonderful experience at this salon! I am on the road for work constantly and was in Minneapolis for a month and a half and needed a haircut. $32 is totally reasonable for a mens haircut. From the outside I was unsure whether this would be a "shi-shi" salon or not. I was pleasantly surprised when I came back later that day for my scheduled appointment. Brad, the owner, scheduled me a haircut even though there were no more times left and got me in at the end of the day. When I got there they offered water or coffee as a nice extra perk. Had a wonderful experience with my hair stylist, Damian. He was completely helpful with discussing how to let my hair grow out. I would go further in saying he is less of a stylist and more of an artist/sculpture. He was far more concerned with the overall end result and seeing it as a whole throughout the cut. Then had great conversations with Brad, Damian, and Emma (another stylist). Had a very chill vibe. Laid back but still very professional. I hope to be able to return to Men's Spa not only for a haircut but just to stop in and say hey. Definitely a group I would love to go out and have a beer with. Looking for a closer, less expensive, and new location for haircuts, I decided to give Men's Spa a try. Luckily I was able to get in the day after I called to get an appointment. The reception was warm, and I felt at ease while waiting. My first appointment included a brief face massage and several hot towels to the face, which was absurdly relaxing. I believe Chris cut my hair that day, and I feel like I lucked out. Since I was looking for something new, he gave some much appreciated suggestions and clearly was a more spirited about haircuts. Overall, I'd say that Men's Spa was an upgrade from my previous stylist. The atmosphere was inviting, the employees were respectful, easy to talk to, and friendly, and it was much more affordable than what I was used to. read more

I am a loyal Mens Spa customer and have worked with Rob and Jaeger, they are both highly professional and competent. These guys go the extra mile, they schedule 45 min - 1 hour slots which means you won't get rushed out the door like at other places. They use top quality products - Aveda, and their own brands called Clean Enhanced Organics and Arigato Holistic Skin Care, which I understand are private label products made by Aveda. They always start with a mini-facial and finish with a straight edge neckline technique. Like I've said before, Mens Spa is one of those places you are slightly reluctant to tell others about because it's like your own little secret to looking good. Terrible all-around experience. Had to try this place due to a scheduling issue at my go-to spot, made a reservation ahead of time only to have to wait 20 minutes to get into a chair. Tait was the stylist I was assigned, and unlike any other haircut I've gotten, I didn't have any glimpse of the work he was doing to my hair as my back was turned to the mirror the entire time. Who does that? Tait seemed to go ahead with his own agenda without running anything past me. Once he turned me around, I was shocked at my new head. In fact, they started doing hot foam shaves and let you buy your haircuts in advance for a nice discount. I've been getting my hair cut by Damien for over 2 years now. Always does a great job. Hot towel and facial included in the service are nice touches. The price is a little high, but after getting my hair botched at a bargain stylist a couple times I've found its worth it to pay a little more. I have been here multiple times and my 18 yo son has too. I have only had good experiences. The haircuts are excellent, the service is always very welcoming and friendly. The only time I had a scheduling mix-up it was my fault and they were very good about fitting me in when I showed up at the time I thought I had an appointment (but was actually on the wrong day). That same day I saw the entire staff shift their schedules to accomodate a group a of guys who came in all wanting a haircut for a wedding they were in the next day. read more
