I like this place. Since I travel so much I try to find local places that have consistent quality at a reasonable price. This place has it. Food was good. It was also a comfortable place to sit for a while over breakfast. New decor, current but not pretentious. Friendly and fast service. Staff was great. My only complaint is the music... wish they wouldn't just play the radio station... commercials and morning DJs and jingles have a way of making the breakfast less relaxing. read more

Finally made it down (for breakfast) to this new Brail's location on 5th where Keystone Cafe used to be. Since it is essentially replacing Keystone Cafe, there's bound to be some comparisons drawn. So, might as well address those before getting into the review. Keystone was sort of legendary in certain circles and they did their thing here for a long time. It was kinda hippy, kinda stoner, kinda veggie, and kinda unrefined. Brail's has it's own scene (Best Hangover Breakfast, etc). The two did not really intermingle much. Now, I gotta be honest, I was never a huge fan of Keystone. The ingredients were never in question (and they had great coffee), but somehow the meal never came out that exciting or enjoyable. The seating seemed to be in a constant state of chaos. But it fit with the area and I couldn't help but feel kinda cool hanging out there. Anyway, when I heard Keystone closed, I wasn't nearly as disappointed as my vegetarian girlfriend. When I heard Brail's was buying it, I was interested in seeing Brail's take on the spot.. If you've never been, Brail's has the whole college diner thing locked in and they run people though with efficiency and militant attention to detail. It's known for decent prices, large portions and crappy coffee. The food is good, but they aren't trying to make anything healthy, high quality or expensive tasting (and we don't want them to). It's just honest food, sort of homemade tasting and nothing amazing or terrifying. And it's definitely consistent. In this new spot, they have applied this ability to be consistent, this attention to detail, to the max, making literally what is essentially a detached annex to the original Brail's in a new location on 5th Street. I'll explain. The food is precisely, exactly the same. The hashbrowns and omelets taste the same. The gravy is the same. The somewhat sour tasting light roast coffee tastes EXACTLY the same as the original location. It is almost as if they ran out of space to move northwards within the building in their old location on 17th and Williamette, and simply set up the next seating area 12 blocks up. If you were visually impaired and told someone to "take me to Brail's", not knowing that this new location existed, you would not be able to tell the difference by the food, drink, menu, staff, or almost anything. So yes folks, you read it here first: Brail's is now a chain. So, I was a little disappointed. I mean, I like Brail's alright, but I was excited to see what creative thing they could do here. I really liked the coffee house idea they did during their last expansion. But they just copied Brail's. Which hey, is a winning formula, but not anything new. So, positives: One thing I think any regular at Brail's knows is that Saturday and Sunday mornings are crazy there, and there's always been a feeling that they are trying to cram too much business into too small of a kitchen. The new place seems to be opposite and so the food was way more consistent and well-cooked during a busy Saturday than the OG location. Also, the plates are squares here. And you can eat Brail's kinda outside! Negatives, the service wasn't great. That was a bit surprising because Brail's has the best service. The tall white dude with the bowtie (can't remember his name right now) left the original Brail's to do real estate. He seemed to be a strong leader for Brail's service team and really it was second to none in this town of slackers ;). But they managed to keep it pretty good in the old location in spite of losing the star quarterback. Here I think they have some B players who need to step it up. Of course it's light years ahead of the Keystone anti service ;). Also, I feel like this is nitpicky and uncalled for, but I hve thought for a LONG time they need to fix the effing coffee at both locations. I know they roast it and I also know there are people in the organization who know how to make good coffee. But something in the process for the house brew tastes kinda sour and not quite right in both locations. Sour coffee is usually a sign of brewing too long at too low a temperature. Look, keep the roast light enough to have 3 or 4 cups without exploding. But turn down the sour. Who knows, maybe it's bad on purpose, and I should shut up :) One other thing I missed was the presence of the Asian tornado known as Joy. It would be good to see how the space reacts to her presence. I hope to see her there on a future visit. I will come back here (in addition to the OG location) more times I am sure because it's just slightly different way to get Brail's food...and I'd like to see the place take on a life of it's own over time and have a few special menu items. But if they don't, that's okay. You can count on us, the drinking population of Eugene. 100% We'll be visiting again the morning after our next Jäger bomb binge! read more

I have a new favorite breakfast place in Eugene! Friendly staff, fast service, cozy decor, specialty coffee and tea drinks (even a brunch cocktail if you want) and delicious food! I love that you can get straight up traditional American style breakfast or mix it up a bit with a rice omelet. Love the crispy hash browns and if you go for lunch, be sure to check out the noodle bowls. Great fusion of Asian-American food. read more

The portion sizes compare to the prices, leave a lot to be desired. I got the big breakfast (2 sunny side up eggs, hash browns, 4 strips of bacon, and 1 piece of sourdough toast) for $9.50, which I could gone to the Paddock, spent $6.50 for the same quality of food, but would of ended up with twice as much. The service was good, but the coffee was bitter, and as person who rates coffee more important than service, this is a huge knock against having a higher rating. read more

Brail's on 5th avenue offers a fantastic breakfast/lunch/brunch experience. I came in on 12 November 2020 for a late breakfast and was incredibly impressed. Upon entrance, we were greeted by the very polite waitresses and were seated almost immediately. The cappuccino I ordered was perfect; foam to espresso ratio was one of the best I've had in Eugene to be honest. I also ordered the Brail's omelet which is filled with ham, bacon, sausage, cheddar, mushrooms, green peppers, onions and tomatoes; bits of the aforementioned are sprinkled on top after plating. On the side, I asked for home fries well done and whole wheat toast. I was completely satisfied with what I got. Everything was cooked perfectly to my liking and I know I will be craving that omelet in the near future. The atmosphere was awesome. Brail's gives that home-y vibe that a lot of local restaurants and cafe's do but for me, it turned out to be one of my favorites among the establishments I've visited. The service was terrific; lighting, seating and furnishings are all very comfortable and intimate. Brail's is a place I'll be recommending to everyone I know. Oh my gosh! The meal was so extraordinary that I am literally writing a review from the table. Amazing service. Delicious food!! Great coffee!! My party was very hungover and this was the perfect place to come, as it was so easy to eat!! Because it's so good !!!! I ordered biscuits and gravy and they were actually in my top 3 favorite biscuits and gravy meals - ever. The sausage gravy had a classic creamy peppery flavor profile. Yum!!!! This is one of my favorite restaurants in Eugene ,which fortunately rescued me from the rude ,"attitudy" waitresses at Morning Glory and the $8 concrete slab they sell for a pancake.Brail's , on the other hand , has consistently good service, friendly help and excellent food. The biscuits and gravy AND home fries are excellent.Ive never had a mediocre or bad breakfast here,ever. I used to go here when it was Keystone and ,although good food, the help seemed alot more detached and impersonal.Since it's become Brail's it has a whole new personable atmosphere ,and sweet waitresses to boot. read more

Uber eats says it's the large location on 5th, went to pickup and was told they don't do uber eats and too check the other location, got there and was treated rudely by the waitress. Asked if the food was still warm as it took us some time to drive from one location to the other, and was met with "uh yeah why wouldn't it be warm." Also pancakes didn't come with anything, just a box of pancakes. Plus no eating utensils. Fix your uber eats before getting pissed off at customers. read more

I just finished my late morning breakfast at Brail's at the new 5th Street location, and I am compelled to write this review immediately. First, you must know that my friends and family often rave about what an incredible home cook I am so I recognize lovingly prepared food when I see it and taste it, so it is a big deal when this food snob says this: "Brail's just blew me away when they prepared for me the ABSOLUTE BEST BREAKFAST OF MY ENTIRE 51-YEAR LIFE!!!" It started with a cappuccino prepared by a very sweet blond waitress named Katie. She reports she is fairly new to making espresso, but her work was outstanding. Before my meal even arrived I just had to tell her that it was the best cappuccino I'd ever had. The flavor was rich and NOT bitter, it was the perfect drinkable temperature. It was creamy and foamy and she had made a beautiful design in the foam. It could have easily passed for a 12-dollar cappucino from a 5-star resort (I've had those.) Then my breakfast arrived. OH MY GOSH!!! How could I have lived my whole life without this kind of meal? I ordered the Spinach omelet with hashbrowns and toast. The omelet had spinach, bacon, mushrooms, onions and Swiss cheese. No biggie. Right? Now I must explain why this breakfast was so good. When the omelet arrived to my table, the top of it was beautifully garnished with a bit of the inside ingredients. I really appreciated this nice touch. Visually the plating was tidy and lovely, and it had large portions of both omelette and hashbrowns, but it wasn't like a lot of the giant sloppy portions that are recklessly piled up in many mediocre restaurants. The ingredients were diced perfectly in size and mixed together so every single delicious bite had the correctly portioned bits of the perfect mixture. The egg portion of the omelet was cooked PERFECTLY. This is significant because, over my lifetime of being an egg snob, I've come to almost always expect half-raw or overly-tough, chewy and over-cooked eggs whenever I order omelets. But it was clear to me that this egg had been attentively and tenderly loved by the cook before it came anywhere near my plate. It was thoroughly cooked, but not a single sign of the common error of tough crisp skin, a typically sure sign of over-cooking. Also, the egg wasn't spread too thin or too thick. What a rare find! The hashbrowns were also THE BEST EVER. They used an incredibly patient technique where they slowly and evenly and perfectly crisp up one side while waiting patiently for the thick layer of taters to thoroughly transform into the most fluffy and tender layer of heavenly shredds lovingly connected to that crunchy layer of spuds. The crisp side isn't anything like those greasy pale yellow shreds we often see, and it's not blackened char either. Thank God. These hash browns were actually BROWN. Yes, evenly medium brown. This can only happen with patience, the correct temperature on the grill, AND, of course, LOVE!! Of course I spoke to Florenzio, the cook, before we left and told him about my experience. He was personable and seemed to appreciate the feedback. This breakfast was such a pleasant surprise. It was actually very emotional for me, and that response to food happens rarely and only with certain restaurant experiences. FLORENZIO!!! Where have you been all my life??? read more

For a empty Restaurant on a Tuesday they sure are Slow and forgot a lot of the order. Friend ordered a bacon waffle, they forgot so we had to remind the lady. Then the French toast for another order came out after the rest of us had ate. As for my order I did the benedict and I shit you not it came out with thin lunch meet super salty ham and I had ordered a side of sausage in case my 5 year old finished all of his that was forgotten. Hostess would not seat us at the table as they said they were "trying to leave it for a larger party". If it was a busy day and people were waiting I would totally understand that. When there's no one around and you won't seat us because you'd rather hold the table for the possibility of more money then I'm leaving and going to Morning Glory where the staff is friendlier anyway. We had a party of 8 and 4 of us ordered the eggs benny and they were all over cooked and not runny.. kind of a bummer since the eggs really make the dish. The service wasn't great either. Very very disappointed! My husband had a small portion so so breakfast. Rating c- I had a noodle bowl that was all greasy noodles with her very little veggies, it said stir fried vegetables. So the saving grace of this restaurant was our waitress who HUSTLED. She was all over the place, always moving, and super nice. The rest of the experience was pretty terrible. I'll preface this by saying we enjoy the original Brails, so we expected nothing less from their new location. When we arrived there was a wait, which was expected. When tables finally opened, the gentleman manning the names list had no idea where they had left off, and read a bunch of names before finally getting to the actual next person in line. When we (my husband, 3 year old, and I) were finally seated, the same man had put menus on the table for us and pointed in the direction of the table. We made our way over and found no kids menu. We had to wait until a random employee came to take our order before we could ask for a menu for the kiddo. We ordered food and asked for a hot chocolate for the little guy. A couple minutes later she returned with a STEAMING hot cup of hot chocolate (no whipped cream or anything). We added a few ice cubes and tried stirring it. IT MELTED THE STRAW!!! A few minutes later another waiter came with a normal hot chocolate with whipped cream, but when we mentioned we had already received one he picked it back up and walked away again... Our actual waitress (the one who hustled), poured the straw melting hot chocolate into a glass and added more cold milk - so he was finally able to drink it. The food arrived. It was okay. Hash browns were good. My veggie omelette was REALLY oily. The mickey mouse pancake for the kiddo had no face or eyes when it usually does... Long story short - we'll avoid this Brails and stick with the original. read more

Well... We had breakfast at the 'new' Brails, on 5th, soon after it first opened up. What a wonderful experience!!! I had the spinach, mushroom, bacon, Swiss cheese omelette and it was Wonderful. My friend had the Eggs Benedict. However, much to my chagrin, either the chef/cook was fired and some not so clever nor experienced, apprentice took over. My omelette was horrible. No fluffiness, no creaminess to the cheese. In short yuck!!! And my friends Eggs Benedict were something out of a waste bin. Blah... read more
