Ok, I lived in Ocala for a year now and found my favorite restaurant. Michael was so warm and welcoming as he greeted us. The appetizer garlic bread was addictive (I could have eaten the entire basket myself) but I wanted to have room for the short rib stroganoff. My hubby ordered the chicken parmigiana. All I can say is WOW! We ordered their signature cheesecake and coconut cream pie. Perfect 10. I can't say enough good things. Cant wait to dine there again!!! Lunch was less than stellar. The Braised Onion crock was full of onions & gooey cheese however the flavor lacked depth. I've enjoyed this onion soup before but this missed the Mark. My wife opted for the chicken salad croissant. There may have been 2 tablespoons of flavorless chicken salad put between a croissant that was borderline stale. I typically love eating at The Braided Onion for dinners & never had a bad meal. No more lunches for me but Fried Chicken is on my radar. A bad day doesn't represent a bad restaurant. Update- Never again, they must have changed Chef's. Everyone complained about their meals. My chicken was so salty, meatloaf was tasteless, lobster Mac & cheese was lackluster. The appetizers and soups were great. PowPow shrimp, I think that was the name, was incredible. But that's where we should have stopped. Ordered the shrimp and grits, the shrimp was cooked well but had no flavor. Others, at the table, felt the same of their food. Place could also use from freshing up. Well, went to the Braised Onion for an anniversary dinner. Wasn't disappointed this time either. Service was excellent and my ribeye was cooked to perfection. I'm very particular about my steak. Also had the lobster bisque. Not to my liking. Not creamy in viscosity but a little watery. Bread pudding was more custard than bread. But, overall we enjoyed the well presented and cooked meals. My mom and I found this little hidden gem during our house hunt in Ocala. We were starving and after we scoped some places out we decided to give this ol' gal a try. We came for lunch and surprised to see we were one of the only ones in there. We were quickly seated in a booth by their super nice hostess! I decided to start with a cup of the lobster bisque and I was not disappointed! It was flavorful and creamy and I slurped the whole thing down way too quickly. Mom decided on the triple cheeseburger(Not patties just cheese) and I ordered the pecan crusted salmon because goat cheese and Dijon sauce yaaaasssss. My dish came with red skin potatoes on a bed of steamed spinach and corn. Delightful, generous portions, just a great meal all around. The sauce was excellent! My mom's burger was cooked to perfection. My only qualm is that the fries(that came with the burger), although perfectly crisp and cooked, were a tad on the salty sad. But that's just my preference, I've never liked a lot of salt on my fries but I get it...they are fries after all. And what better than some salty crispy fries! Overall we had a wonderful lunch experience. Our server (we didn't remember her name sorry) was great, attentive, and checked on us frequently. Had read reviews online that the French onion soup here was awesome...it was! But downhill from there. My fiancé's meal was the Braised Shortrib & he said it was a fancied up pot roast & the carrots on the plate still had the stems on them & the mashed potatoes only were seasoned with pepper & nothing else. Small portion $30...will say you can buy an entire pot roast at the store for much less & it will be so much better than this. I was so looking 4wrd to the Shrimp & Grits meal I ordered. Not sure if this is the norm for this meal, but had to peel & devain 6 shrimp before even beginning my meal, plus a run to the restroom to wash my hands. Both meals were brought out lukewarm at best. I mixed the shrimp with grits & took a bite. Shrimp tasteless, but grits were fantastic...that helped the overall meal...food almost cold. Had to hv server reheat. Got 2 desserts...khalua coffee ice cream(no taste of khalua detected). I got strawberry cheesecake that was described as being chocolate-dipped. It was not chocolate-dipped...only chocolate on top. Bland..no taste...just not good at all. We were both so royally disappointed as I'd bn wanting to come here for a long time. This epic disappointment was super expensive for 2 people at $120 + tip at 3:30 in the afternoon on a weekday. Our server was nice, but he was on his phone at the bar a lot of the time & didn't realize I had pushed my plate away for quite some time. Seems a server would know by carrying plates by hand that the meals aren't hot before setting them on the table. Once he saw it he tried not to acknowledge it...probably thinking I was going to ask for a free meal. I knew he was avoiding us when he was trying to go to his other table & I literally had to flag him down. Wouldn't it be better to address why I had done that than to avoid it? I was only wanting a reheat, which he did. I'm not sorry to suggest no one come here & expect anything more than subpar lukewarm plates of very small tasteless portions for outrageous prices. Don't say I didn't warn you. The 2 stars strictly are because the server was nice, though I wish I hadn't seen him on his phone any time he was not attending his 2 tables. read more

Absolutely terrible. We will never go back. We've been there several times in the past year with varying levels of satisfaction. Last night six of us went there and two of the meals were sent back (and nothing else ordered) and a third was unacceptable. The corned beef and cabbage was not edible and the eggplant parmesan was not cooked completely. The grouper was old and tasted fishy (even though the chef said it was fresh)--fresh grouper would not have a salty and fishy taste. We were not charged for the corned beef and eggplant. However, when the bill came they had the audacity to include the price of these items when they calculated the service charge (when this was brought to the attention of the manager he immediately fixed the bill). Terrible business practice. In the past we've had issues with the service but nothing like last nights food issues. My fiancé and I ate at The Braised Onion for the first time with a dear friend and we were not disappointed. We had seen the reviews and knew that this place was going to be good. We had even referred a friend here a month or so ago based on the reviews and the feedback was extremely positive! The atmosphere here is one of simple elegance and yet it is somewhat casual. We dined on a Wednesday evening just after 7 PM and there were only three or four other tables seated. I don't know if it had been busy earlier in the evening or if it was because Wednesday night is just not a busy night for them but, that was just an observation. Now, let's talk about the food! Their menu is fabulous and has a wide variety of options. Not crazy options but things that would be appropriate for a restaurant called the "braised onion". I started with the braised onion soup which came in a crock with caramelized, bubbly, cheese draping over the top. This soup was phenomenal! My fiancé had the grilled mushroom soup and it was equally amazing. The texture was creamy like a bisque and it had little chunks of grilled mushroom. Our friend ordered the fried green tomatoes and they did not disappoint! We paired our food with a Cabernet Savignon by Hawk Crest. It was quite nice and complimented our appetizers and our meals. For our main courses I ordered the ribeye medium rare which came with a loaded baked potato but I chose to have butter on the side only and it came with broccoli. My meat was cooked perfectly but it was a little hard to cut with the serrated knife they provided. The flavor was pretty good and the demi-glaze was a nice addition. I wish the flavor had been a little more powerful. I would classify it better than average but not the best steak I've ever had. Next time I think I will try the tenderloin. My fiancé also ordered the ribeye but she ordered hers medium well with broccoli and green beans. Her steak looked more medium rare so she had to send it back for a little more time on the grill. She liked hers but agreed that we have had better. I think we are beef snobs. LOL. Our friend ordered the grilled beef tournedos which came with Parmesan risotto and a Cabernet savignon and portobello mushroom cream sauce. I tasted it. Delish! Her meal also came with some mixed vegetables including squash, red and green peppers, and carrots. So, overall the food was really good! The reason I did not give it a 5 is because I felt the service was a little slow. Water was not refilled and our waitress did not check on us after serving the meals to make sure everything was cooked properly. We had to flag her down after multiple attempts to get her attention. Visiting my sister in Ocala and this restaurant was highly recommended. The menu for Father's Day had an amazing choice. We had reservations for 6 pm and ordered within 20 minutes. We patiently waited for our food for over an hour. The wait staff came out once to ask if we wanted more to drink. After waiting 2 hours for our food we decided it was time to leave as there was nothing but excuses telling us that the manager was busy and couldn't talk to us because he was busy with other orders. The manager never had the decency to talk to us but we were told by the wait staff that we would get 50% off our meal. It was the worst experience I've ever had. No food after waiting 2 hours so we left. Very, very disappointed in this restaurant and will never try it again. read more

The portions were huge!! I had enough for two people, which means that I had leftovers for one of my sisters. The Pow Pow Shrimp was amazing. Not too much sauce. Very well seasoned and good temperature. The salad was FRESH!! I could taste the freshness. The tea was very sweet, which I loved. The chicken sandwich was HUGE. I want to be careful to separate the great, attentive job the staff does here, from the mediocre/average food and inflated prices/questionable business practices. Our party of 6 itself had mixed reviews, but to put it plainly- most items are fairly bland. One of our party was told they 'didn't serve side salads' which is absurd, (this is hospitality 101) and the pot pie was glorified Shoprite Soup with a pastry crust. The meats were done correctly, I'll give credit where it's due. Drinks. Rip off isn't even the word. They employ the bourgeoisie system of giving smaller size drinks for brands that are not even considered top shelf around most places in the nation. And this is Florida. Our first time at The Braised Onion. It is nice location , not busy as the square or on 200. First and foremost I would like to applaud the owners. It's rare nowadays to find owners that are hands on. Just by watching them, I saw them noticed things so quickly and made sure all their guests were happy. They really take pride in their restaurant. The ambiance was nice and a plus (in my opinion) was the lighting, you could see the menu. We ordered the shrimp and grit cakes, delicious. I ordered the Braised short ribs, delicious and my husband ordered the 1855 Filet mignon. Hubby says it's the best steak he's ever had, like butter. This restaurant is not on the beaten path of the Hwy 200 cookie-cutter fast food junk food mess that is so prevalent in Ocala. You pretty much have to know where you are going to find this nice local spot. We went as a party of eight on a Sunday without reservations. It is certainly not suggested but the management took care of us and after a short wait, we were seated at a very nice large round table with plenty of elbow room. We ordered several appetizers such as fried green tomatoes topped with crab which were excellent. The shrimp cocktail was served a bit differently as sort of deconstructed. Our salads came and again in a bit of a deconstruct Cesars and standard house-type salads. All served cold. Our main courses came soon after. Most of the party opted for the very large meatloaf with an excellent mushroom gravy and mashed potatoes and fresh green beans. I had short rib stroganoff. The noodles were cooked to perfection and the stroganoff sauce was good but lacked a bit of cream. One of our parties ordered the liver and onions which she loved. The liver was cooked perfectly, still a bit pink inside. This was a birthday luncheon and a cake was brought from outside so we didn't have a chance to sample the desserts. This restaurant is an excellent local place. With American comfort food menu. The portions were large and the service was exceptional. read more
