We were a party of five for dinner. Three of us had the liver and onions, with bacon. It comes with green beans, mashed potatoes and gravy, although my wife swapped the mashed out for baked. All agreed that our meals were made as ordered (medium rare, medium, and we'll done), and quite flavourful. Another in our party had the lobster mac and cheese. I've had this here before and it was amazing. She agreed with that assessment, but was barely able to finish a quarter of it. The portion is HUGE! Be prepared to eat leftovers for at least one meal, if not more. The last order was a spinach salad, which was very fresh and delicious. Frozen margaritas are a staple; delicious and refreshing. We Dined here tonight I have a small spinach salad with hot dressing that was excellent and then for dinner I split the braised short ribs with whipped potatoes and broccoli with my mom we are both so full. I had high expectations for this place based on the reviews but I was very disappointed. I ordered the mushroom soup ( which was the best part of the meal) and the chicken marsala. The chicken marsala tasted and looked more like grilled chicken with country gravy. Absolutely no marsala flavor to it. May be some of the worst I've ever had. After the second bite I discovered the chicken was undercooked and raw in the middle ( gross), so I sent it back and ordered the burger. The burger was bland. The patty was cooked to my specification however it had absolutely no seasoning, like something you'd get in a hospital after having ulcer surgery. We ate at The Braised Onion on 12/13/15 before we went to downtown Ocala to see the lights at the square. The setting, both inside and out, is very soothing and inviting. The service was attentive and informative. The food was simply amazing. As another reviewer wrote- it is fine dining, at it's best. My husband and i had the Caprese salad. The half-salad was plenty. I got the Beef Stroganoff and my husband ordered the Meatloaf. Both were delicious. We shared a creme brûlée. Very light and tasty.I would recommend this restaurant. This was our review from 4 years ago. Every time we are in Florida, we make a point to go thru Ocala and eat at the Braised Onion. The food is amazing. We have never had a bad meal or bad service there. I noticed Trevor got some bad press. Last week we were in Ocala and ate there 2 nights in a row. Trevor was our waiter both times. Although his manor may have been a little dry, he was informed and knowledgeable. He is soft spoken, but as an older person, my hearing is not what it use to be. I have eaten there several times with marginal mixed thoughts. I ate there 6-7 months ago and was not overwhelmed. In fairness, I decided to give "Braised Onion" another shot. I had the grilled beef tournedos. Shoulder tenderloin medallions covered in a Cabernet Sauvignon and Portobello mushroom cream sauce. Served with parmesan Risotto and fresh mixed vegetables.The risotto was very good! the tenderloins were cooked ok yet, the sauce was not flavored well. Bland with a "chalky" after taste. My guest had the Pacific Salmon. Pecan Crusted Salmon, sauteed baby Spinach with toasted Quinoa in a frangelico sauce. Salmon was dry, flavorless and unimpressive. the rest of the dish was ok. The ambience is always great. Some nights they have live music. Service was ok, except we got our Bread waaaayyyy after the salad. I'm not giving up!. The Chicken pot pie is always a winner! I don't know what people see that's so great about the Braised Onion. The restaurant is very clean & the ambiance is relaxing, but the food is what will keep bring guests back. I came for the Fish & Chips since I looked up the menu prior to coming there. Our waiter Trevor informed me quite condescendingly that it's on the lunch menu only. I have been working in the restaurant business for 7 years & felt not welcomed there. We have frequented Braised Onion on several occasions and today we were disappointed. There was confusion with the waitress and the owner called this young lady out in front of other tables which was inappropriate. Our appetizer came out followed immediately by our entree. We had the tenderloin of beef and it was bland. Very dissatisfied I spoke to the owner who held no accountability but blamed this young waitress. Don't think I'd come back and pay that price when the owner doesn't care less but comps food for her friends. Not cool. read more

Frustrated short visit. We made reservations for 630pm. We we arrived, there was one couple waiting, but they did not have reservations. We were told it would be about 5 minutes and we would be seated. After 20 minutes I approached the hostess and was told that they were nearly ready, the server had asked for a couple minutes and then we would be seated. We were finally seated at 7pm. The couple that was waiting when we arrived were seated after us at the next table, and another party of 2 was seated at the booth at the end. Both of those tables had a server approach quickly and gave drink orders. At 710pm, we still had not been greeted by our server. I am a fairly patient person, but why offer reservations if you are unable to honor them, and why would you seat 3 parties next to each other at the same time? I did not feel welcome, and I did not feel valued. We paid for the drinks that we got at the bar, and went elsewhere. read more

We had never been to this restaurant before, reviews online were positive AND recent. Unfortunately, we discovered that a private party of about 60 was being held that night. The priority was definitely on them, not us! Service was slow even though the young girl was very sweet. I ordered a seafood risotto. The flavor was good but it was drowning in cream sauce! My husband's prime rib was dry and over cooked (the last piece, we were told). He was served a loaded baked potato that wasn't hot enough to melt the butter. The bread they served was outstanding and the mixed drinks were alright. We won't recommend this place unless you can be assured that there are no private parties booked. read more

I actually really like this place. The food is good, decent selection for a family of picky eaters. Atmosphere is great. Love the decor and lighting and set up. My only issue is the fact that service is very slow. I've never been there before when we didn't have to wait (except once, for my bday, huge private party, about 3 years ago). Wait for drinks, wait to order, wait for food, etc... Nice staff, but now 4 our of 5 times that I've been there, we've had the slow issue. So, just don't go if you're in a rush, or cross your fingers and hope I just bombed out a few times. read more

The French Onion Soup is a must here!!! It was the best I've ever had. Their shrimp and grits needs some work in my opinion though. The serving of shrimp and andouille sausage was very good, but there was WAY too much grits on a heavy dish. We went with friends a 3rd time because it was late and it was convenient to our location. We were more than pleased to see they were back to their original menu. Very nice place. Decor was delightful and the food matched. I had fried green tomatoes, lobster bisque and crab cakes. These were real crab cakes not breeding cakes with two pieces of crab. Me and my husband ate there for dinner. It was dinner but I was hungry for a French dip sandwich. It Was on their menu I checked prior to going . When we ordered I was told they only served sandwiches at lunch. This wasn't mention in menu on line. So I ordered French onion soup and a salad ,my husband had the pot pie. My husband said the pot pie was good ,but my soup was horrible. No way I could eat it. I asked my husband try, he said the same. We won't be going back anytime soon. read more

My family ate here while visiting Ocala area. Two kids and two adults all left 100% satisfied. The food was very good. Delicious in fact. Shrimp and grits were very delicious but the sausage was a bit too spicy for my wife. (Waitress accurately described this...but wife and I were sharing so we tried it and LOVED it). The meatloaf was incredibly tasty made with a brown beef gravy. My son ordered the chicken Marsala and my wife and I were jealous of that too. My youngest son had the kids portion burger and fries. My wife and I stopped in after finding a couple other restaurants closed. I can't believe our luck! This is one of our favorite restaurants now. The setting of the place is really nice with a comfortable waiting area out front which lead me to think this was a good place. Walking in I thought we would be underdressed because of the beautiful entry and bar area, luckily we were okay with shorts. We had a great waiter named Brett who immediately asked for our drink orders while describing the special for dinner. The menu was just two pages which made ordering easy. They offer a nice selection of beef and seafood. My wife chose the Catfish and I thought I'd try the Shrimp and Grits. While we waited they brought out some delicious garlic rolls and the meals followed soon after. My meal was perfectly done in an amazing sauce with Andouille sausage, best I've had!! My wife's Catfish was lightly breaded and was a nice light texture and accompanied by southern greens that I've never tried before but definitely will again, great tastes all around. Looking for a good meal out, my mother recommended this place. My husband had the salmon with quinoa which was very good. My young daughter and I enjoyed the lobster bisque. Outstanding in every way!! A group of 7 ladies came for late lunch a week ago. Server (said she was new but she did great) was fabulous, food yummy!! Ambiance was beautiful. Server suggested small salads as they tend to be big. Even small salads were huge!
