I'm here in Ocala, FL for a business trip and decided to take a chance on Yelp reviews to find somewhere to grab dinner. Two highly rated restaurant popped out at me when I did my search: The Braised Onion and Brookly'n Place. I drove by Brooklyn's and while I'm sure it's a great place, the exterior of the restaurant looked a little too shabby for my taste, so I took a drive to The Braised Onion. This place is a hidden gem! The food, service, and ambiance are first rate. My waiter was friendly and prompt with his service. My simple meal of chicken pot pie was excellent in presentation and scrumptiously delicious! If I didn't have to work from 6-10pm I would have grabbed a drink at their fully loaded bar. If I ever stop by Ocala again for work, I will for sure drop by for a meal here! This place deserves 5 stars! read more

Food was very good. Service was very bad. Had to go searching and requesting a return visit from our waitress ... even though she appeared to only have two tables. Didn't get the salad until the dinner was served ... without the salad ... we had to remind her we ordered one. Wanted a second glass of wine and had to finally ask another waiter to send our girl back out. Needed more butter ... no waitress. Wanted more sauce for the fish .... no waitress. The invoice was incorrect ... no waitress. I think we spent more time waiting for and looking for our waitress than we did enjoying our meal. Will go back but will ask for a different waitress. Great place and amazing atmosphere! I took my wife here to celebrate our anniversary and she loved it. The menu was very extensive which I found impressive and the atmosphere is very romantic from the outside to the amazingly lit bar and interior. The waitress was very friendly and knowledgeable when it came to the menu. She congratulated us and surprised us with a delicious dessert to top off our celebration. This was the worst dining experience that I've ever had. Absolutely the worst service!!!!

Well, we went to this restaurant because this was our friends favorite place and we intended on treating them to a nice dinner while in town visiting them. We didn't expect too much based on the pictures on their Yelp site, but we were SO pleasantly surprised! EVERYTHING we tried was FABULOUS! We started with the onion cheese loaf as a starter with an onion jam. Really good! I try Lobster Bisque everywhere I go and this one did not disappoint! The pear salad was delicious! The rolls were served piping hot! The Lobster Mac and Cheese was the best thing we had that night probably!!! Worth every penny!!! We tried the short ribs and the seafood medley. Most tender short ribs! And for dessert, the coconut pie! Excellent!!! The best part? Drove from Tampa to dine here to start birthday weekend. Our second visit, not our last. Trevor was our fantastic server. He went above and beyond. Started with Fried green tomatoes. Perfectly done. Great garlic rolls. I had the Country Fried Filet with mashed potatoes & green beans. Being Southern I usually don't like the harder green beans many serve now. These looked that way but were delicious. They were a little soft & cooked in great seasonings. I would order those as a larger side! My steak was huge & delicious. Tender, breaking was crisp but not over breaded. Perfect. Hubby had Mahi Mahi Shrimp Oscar with Hollandaise sauce & mashed potatoes & asparagus. He ate every bite. I brought home half of my steak & most of potatoes for him to eat for lunch tomorrow. We shared a slice of Coconut Cream Pie. A man was playing & singing in the bar area which added to the ambiance. Last night was not so good. The staff was doing their best to cover the customers, however, the management short-handed the staffing with no back-up plan for success. Dinner took more than two hours. Long was the wait for a table and eventually a meal. Fortunately, the complimentary wine was flowing. The food once we got it was good, but not fantastic. Major issue with the staffing was reported as a cook walking out. Hopefully, things improve. read more

We are new to the Ocala area. Went to this place on a recommendation. First visit in early December, all was good. Good food, priced good, good service. Second visit in late December, not so good. I ordered a lunch entree. When I requested to have a roll with my meal, I was told, no rolls are available for lunch. Ummmm.... I just had lunch a few weeks ago and was served rolls without requesting them. The waitress stated "Management has changed the policy, NO rolls will be served with lunch entrees". Okay, then I will buy a roll. She said I could only buy a basket of rolls. I said okay. She went to the kitchen and returned and said I would have to wait, no rolls available, ONE roll would be put in the oven. Okay. It was 4:15, dinner starts at 4:30 and NO rolls ready. As I finished my meal she brought out my one roll. When she brought us the bill, she said she forgot to charge us for the roll. Okay. I can handle mistakes by the staff, poor food, but intentional DECEPTION for whatever reason is unacceptable. She obviously had her own reason for treating us so poorly. She put a lot of effort into trying to make our dining experience awful. Too many other places to dine. Don't risk losing a pleasurable experience here. Won't return!! read more

We ate there for dinner Friday night with a friends. The meals are very good, but get ready to pay for very good. $16 for fried chicken is stretching it for me. Wendy, our server could not have been nicer. The live music was about twice as loud as it should have been. It overpowered any conversation. The Braised Onion was our last hope to find a good meal in Ocala, a wish that has never been realized. It came closer than others but it is still below par. Like many Ocala eateries, they rush the food to the table. We managed to stay there 2 hours with a variety of stall tactics. We outlasted diners who were seated as much as a half hour after we arrived. Terrible. The food was okay but not very creative or flavorful. The chicken pot pie was good, the lemon chicken was good. My prime rib was okay. The mac and cheese was okay. We were looking for more than okay and good and we never found it. The place has potential but needs to be more creative. Slow down the pace. The sides need to be shortened. Why order the soup off the app list if they are giving it away for free with the entree? Makes no sense. Why must everything be quick? Why must everything lack nuances and flavors? There's no excuse for that. read more

I'm sorry to say, but I feel this is overrated. I have tried this three times and not happy each time. Onion soup was too salty to eat( and I like salt) wait staff tried it and agreed. Mac and cheese was flavorless. Next time I got the special it was a shrimp dish - shrimp were completely mushy but the salad that came with it was very good. The last time I order another soup and when I got it it had a glass type stone in it. The only place they have these stones are out front. I can ONLY assume it was off another person's table- was "topped off" and reserved. The supervisor couldn't explain it any other way, so I'm done! read more

Went to the Braised Onion for the first time and came out with mixed emotions. The hostess seemed lost and took 5 minutes to find us a seat and when we were finally seated the table wobbled to the degree that we asked and received a different seat. My wife ordered the Fried Chicken with the sides of Lobster Bisque and side salad. The Lobster Bisque was tasty but lacked even a hint of lobster. The salad was tasty but when the waiter delivered the entree (Chicken) he picked up the half done salad without asking if she was finished. The chicken was just that. 4 pieces of chicken on a plate. Poor presentation to a dish that was quite tasty. I had the Beef Short Ribs with cream of mushroom soup and mashed potatoes. The soup was delicious. The Short ribs and potatoes were equally good but the presentation was bad, just meat and potatoes slapped on the plate. Very disappointing. I wanted to take my assistant to a nice dinner while we were in town for a meeting. Crab cake appetizer was good, but salad with shrimp was ordered for a main course. The waiter didn't ask if I wanted a whole or half salad, so I mistakenly assumed he would know that for my dinner I would eat a whole salad. What I got was a clear salad luncheon plate with spinach on it and six "grilled" shrimp that had no flavor. Shrimp were completely devoid of any seasoning or spice of any kind --and barely warm! My companion got the pork shank and it was adequate. We both agreed the crab cake was the only good part of the meal. As for the service, our waiter was either annoyed or inexperienced - I could not tell. He spoke very quickly and abruptly, seemed in a terrible hurry (they were not busy) and told me the shrimp would be prepared "however the chef feels like it" (??). Surroundings were lovely, that's the only good thing I can say about our visit there. Service was slow and not very friendly, food took a long time coming out and when it arrived my Philly cheese steak sandwich roll was hard and dry and the meat was dry and crispy, and the only thing that was hot was the plate it was served on. Had lunch here yesterday, uninspired menu, extremely poor presentation. My lobster and crab salad sandwich tasted fishy and it was a mosh mash of shred. It was served on a large white plate without any garnish looked lost and did not reflect any love from the chef. Also had the coconut cream pie, the crust was so bad I did not eat it could not even cut with a fork it was tough. Solid 4 stars! Strong menu for conventional American dishes like fried chicken, meatloaf, and chicken pot pie. We had pecan encrusted salmon on sautéed spinach and beef stroganoff. The salmon was very good; I could argue the stroganoff used stew meat rather than sirloin but it was very tasty. Salads were nice: one was a head of romaine the other a nice spinach with apples and blue cheese. Desserts were good. We had rum raisin bread pudding and one other. Atmosphere was a little noisy for our tastes; a full bar was available and popular with live music to boot. The menu had enough interest that we will be back. read more
