Brake King on Jefferson Ave is no longer a reputable company. I took my car in for front in inspection because my steering wheel was shaking when I reached 65 mph or more. The called me and said well we can't check your care because the oil light is on and it's not safe to drive but we can check for the oil light. I said yes. Y'all they came back and said you need two front tires and the oil pressure sensor is bad so we can replace that. I asked how much and they said $139. I said ok. Why they charged me $374 to pull a sensor and put a $25 one back on. Charged me a diagnostic fee for the "checking the front end" which they did not put on the lift, and a diagnostic fee for the oil sensor and labor of more than 1hr and half. I had my tires replaced by somewhere else and still having the same problem. Called brake king back and spoke to Travis. asked if he could suggest what else it could be. He had absolutely nothing to say because they NEVER fully checked my front end. Just looked at my tires and said you need two front tires. This is definitely not the old Break King and new management is giving them a terrible name. Don't take your car there. Please have someone else check it! read more

Had Brakes checked on 4/24/23 at Brake King Jefferson Ave Newport News VA. Was told needed front pads and routers and that vehicle would probably need rear brakes soon because they were down to 25%. Mileage was 68449. Had front Brakes done. Wife and daughter took vehicle back for brakes to be checked on 12/23/24. Mileage at 86090 ( 17641 miles later). Received text indicating all 4 brakes needed pads and routers as well as flush. Total $1013.32. I said no and paid the roughly $70 fee for them doing the brake check. I then immediately took the vehicle to Hornsby Tire and Service on Jefferson Ave in Newport News VA. I asked them to check all 4 brakes. Upon checking I was told I needed rear pads and routers. They did the job. Summary. Readers can come to their own conclusion. I will not be doing business with Brake King. read more

Went in for a quote to modify my exhaust. Asked the man at the desk MULTIPLE TIMES in MULTIPLE WAYS if there was a diagnostic/quote fee, in which he said "No". Well the man just lied to me because I had to pay a $60 diagnostic fee just for them to lift my vehicle!!!! They quoted me $900+ to replace the resonators and delete the mufflers because of the length of my new resonators and how they have to special weld. Decided to go to Auto Muffler King right down the road, they quoted me $495 plus tax for the EXACT same job, saying they can do it "no problem" not to mention they didn't charge me a bs "diagnostic fee." I have previously went to two different Dodge dealerships locally or an alignment. I was told about this place from a guy at Costco. New spot for anything that is not covered under warranty. Steve worked on my truck and was cool af. Came out and told me exactly what he was going to check. After he checked told me what was needed. Best $80 I've spent. I was talkig to my coworker last week about my car and how I needed new brakes and she immediately recommended this place. Naturally I jumped on Yelp to see what people had to say about this place and it was in between. I decided to stop by Friday afternoon to get a quote and see if I can get my brakes replaced. The woman at the desk directed me to the mechanic in the garage for a quote and since I didnt know exactly what needed to be done to the brakes I just asked for a quote on new pads and rotors for front and back. He calculated some things and came back with a quote, I asked if it could be done today but they were backed up. He told me to come the next day and to come around 7am to make sure I'd be one of the first ones helped since they open up at 7:15am. Saturday morning I show up at 7am and there were already 5 people in front of me. I didnt mind since it was a Saturday and I had nothing else planned. When i got to the counter I told the lady what I needed done and then I sat in the lobby waiting. I almost forgot to mention how huge this place is by the way. 20 garage spaces for mechanics to work on cars and almost all of them were being used so business is definitely booming. After waiting for about an hour one of the mechanics called me and told me that all I needed was my front brake pads replaced and my rotors resurfaced and my rear breaks were fine. I was so happy to hear that and so shocked he was so honest and didnt try to beat me in the head and make me get a bunch of unnecessary work done on my car. He then gave me the total of what everything would be after tax and I was like hell yea let's do it! The price was well under what I was expecting. From inside the lobby I can see the mechanic working on my car and i also saw when he finished and put the tires back. The car was lowered so I thought it was pretty much done. So the only reason why I gave a 4 and not a 5 is because I literally watched my car sit there for an hour after the service was complete and asked the person at the desk was my car done because its back on the ground. They said they were waiting for the paperwork from the mechanic. He eventually came around and everything was good to go. Im so glad my coworker put me on to this place and its less than 4 miles from my home! I will def be back here to service my car. read more

I was blown away by the service at Brake King. I went there to get a second opinion on a repair that was going to cost me about 2k. They took my van, went over it with a fine toothed comb and test drove it for free. Then they rotated my tires to check "something real fast", and it isolated the issue to just a worn tire. During the inspection they found my rotors needed to be turned and offered me a discount on it as well. I literally saved about 1900 dollars by going to Brake King, I am glad I listened to the recommendation of my father in law (who has been a Brake King customer for years). read more

Worst customer service ever. Dropped my car off for state inspection there was note on the door stating they would accept state inspections on Monday June3, 2019. However someone called me back to say the owner wanted her to call to say that the inspector was on vacation no inspections until Tuesday June 4, 2019. Also that they needed to keep my car if I wanted it inspected on Tuesday June 4th. Inspections never happened after I left my car. Mechanic broke one of the TPMS sensors during a four tire replacement. Mechanic said low tire pressure light wasn't related to tire replacement. Gave repair quote to fix what he broke. After 2 days I got my car back. They had to remove the back seat to replace the sensor they broke. Dust and dirt everywhere. They broke and lost the plastic cover to the car seat harness. Ass clowns. Bonus: 3 months later, those "new" struts make my car sound like I'm riding one of those toy horses on springs we all used to have. And the brakes they "fixed a year ago went COMPLETELY out...not squeaking, not wore out...pedal-to-the-floor-just-to-slow-down-brake-fluid-puddle-out. After you pay someone else to fix what Brake King breaks, it stops being a bargain. What good is the warranty if you have to let them (Gordon, Kelvin, etc) touch your car again? read more

As I was driving around last night, I noticed my wife's car had a blown headlight. As a teacher my time is very limited. I had already made plans for the day and dreaded the possible loss of a free day due to '"getting the car fixed", From my experience, getting any kind of reliable car repair takes all day. After I got my errands done for the day, I decided to give Brake King a try. As a former resident of Newport News, I have always drove by this place in awe. It's huge..like 16 bays plus huge. I walked in and it had the whole old school auto shop feel. I walked up to the window and told the counter lady what i needed. She promptly quote me a very reasonable price. 30 for an oil change and .25 hrs(75 an hour) and the cost of the lamp(10 bucks) The wait was only 2hrs on a busy friday at the start of the month(very reasonable considering it is peak inspection time). Total bill was 81 bucks. They also have 4 wheel front end alignments for 51.00 out the door. I'll be trying that soon. Overall I'm VERY happy with the work they did on my vehicle. The only reason I didn't give them five stars, is I would have liked to have them do a visual inspection and have the tech tell me if he noticed anything out of the ordinary. I have to give this business a one-star due to waiting time. I came in at 7:45 am for an oil change and the receptionist stated it will take no more than 1.5 hours to get this done. So, I agreed and waited and waited and waited and waited. 1.5 hours later, I followed up with the receptionist and told her I've been waiting 1.5 hours. NO APOLOGIES at all and I asked nicely how long will I have to wait, she could not provide an estimated time. 45 minutes later, I followed up again and asked her how long, she said that my car is next to be serviced and that it will take 20 minutes to change the oil. I wait another 45 minutes. Again, NO APOLOGIES. The results - I didn't get my oil changed that day. I asked the for my key back and told her that I rather not get it serviced anymore. I took my to Brake King because for a service that I knew I would save money by choosing Brake King for the service; instead, of the dealer ship. I took my car to Brake King all to be told by one mechanic (Robert*) that I needed to take my car to the Toyota Dealership to get it fixed and next phone I got was from another mechanic (Tony) stating that my car barely made it into the shed and that he got my car up 80% corrected and that he will get with another one of his team mates (Kevin) to look into the car to get it up to 100% fixed. Then he (Tony) quoted to me the cost of the repairs. I was disappointed that my car was first worked on without my permission nor prior knowledge of what was even wrong with my car. After I suggested that he put my car back to the state it was in before fixing it, the mechanic said, "You car is not going to make it out of the shed. It barely moves." Therefore, I let the car stay fixed. I informed him that my care needs to be fix before I pick it up and that I was not paying for an 80% job. Within 24 hours of picking my car up the car was acting the same it was before I even brought it into Brake King. I then took my car to Toyota all to get the same results that Brake King claimed was fixed. I brought my car back all for the mechanic and owner to try and play the blame game and suggest Toyota does not want to fix my car; however, after leaving my car with Brake King, they called to inform me that the senor on the car was defective and that it was fixed. I got a call from that same mechanic (Tony) who fixed my car without my permission the first time to who now suggests that other sensors could be causing my car to act up now. I re-informed him that I was not paying for nothing new because he all ready fixed my car without my permission and informing me what was causing the issues. I said I paid for your fix my car 100% not 80%; therefore, I am not repaying for something that should have been fixed the first time around and if you could not fix my car then why touch it. Within 10 minutes I got a call to state that my car was ready for pick up. My car was still acting up and for months I looked for another mechanic who could help fix my car. I called again before flying home asking could they look at my car again, I wanted to give them the benefit of the doubt, all to be informed by the manager (Bubba) that Tony no longer works at the company and it has nothing to do with my complaint. After months of back and forth and returning form my trip, I go to pick my care up from Brake King all for the first mechanic (Robert) who now suggests that it was another sensor that is causing my car to act up. So now you are writing up another estimate for me to pay for another service, when my car is still acting up from the first service???? These mechanics got to be kidding me right? I will say I have learned my lesson. I have not had any problems with any services until this incident with Brake King. As one friend said to me, "Why would you take your car to them to fix on a sensor when Brake King completely states what they can fix. Look at the names on each shed." I do not plan to take my car to Brake King ever again. I want to inform as many consumers as possible regarding any engine light or other sensor lights that maybe on in your to not take your car to Brake King. i called a head to see if i could get my suspension checked, the girl told me to come on in... i got there less than 30 minutes later, walked up to the window.. one lady was on the phone the other so sucked into her computer she didnt even acknowledge me. so when the one gets off the phone i told her i just called, very rudely she then tells me i will have to wait aprox 2 hrs just to be checked! i was furious bc she could have told me that on the phone before i wasted my time to come up there just to find out they were super busy.
