Rory at BrakeMasters really helped my friend and me out in a pinch. We were on a cross country roadtrip and realized we needed to get our brakes done. We went to a competitor (whose name rhymes with Heineke) because they had the earliest available spot and we were eager to keep our trip moving. Fast forward one day, Meineke snapped one of our brake lines, ordered the wrong parts and informed us that we would be stuck in Flagstaff for the next five days (this was all around Thanksgiving, so shipping was delayed and their shop was closed). We were devastated. In a desperation move, we called BrakeMasters in hopes that someone could repair our partially seized caliper. Rory picked up the phone and said he would give it a try. Within 15 minutes, he had the caliper rebuilt and fully operational. The only problem now was to repair the (newly) broken brake line. Again the competitor said they needed the part and that wouldn't arrive for a few more days. We were able to get the vehicle towed to Brake Masters, where Rory shaped a new line himself, mirroring the piece that had been broken. He installed new rotors, fixed our line, repaired our caliper and installed new pads - all over the weekend. He went above and beyond, helping us when we were truly at a loss for what to do. While I wouldn't expect Rory or anyone to do that consistently, it showed us such a clear difference between what a good person and honest mechanic (Rory at BrakeMasters) looks like, compared to their competitor. A couple months ago, I needed to go get an oil change. Brake Masters was offering some reasonable prices on an oil change, so I decided to choose them to service my car. Things seemed okay for a couple of months, until my oil light turned on. Naturally, I thought this was very strange has I had gotten my oil changed not too long before. When it came on again I decided to check under the hood for myself, and the oil cap was off and oil was spilled all over the outside of my engine. I was absolutely pissed. But don't worry, I just went to Walmart to get some oil that would work with my car, and I filled the thing up myself. AND I put the cap on! Whatever you do, do not go to this shop. I think we can all agree that an oil change is an extremely simple task. Brake Masters in Flagstaff is not capable of doing it. I took my car into Brake Masters in Flagstaff to have a routine oil change and to have my brakes replaced. For the next several weeks, I drove my car with no issues whatsoever. I got up one morning and began driving my car, and within a quarter mile of driving, the check oil light came on and then the car immediately shut off. The check oil light was not on until a few seconds before the car died. I had the car towed to a shop open in Flagstaff that day, and they found that there was no oil in the car whatsoever and that the oil filter was loose, which caused the oil loss. I have written documentation of this. Brake Masters left the oil filter loose when they did the oil change. I next called Brake Masters. They requested I bring the car back to them, which I did. They claimed that there was no engine damage stemming from the oil loss, and that the issue was caused by a computer issue in the car, and that I needed to take the car to another shop that could work on it. I then had to get the car towed again to a shop that could work on a computer problem, who told me that the issue was not caused by computer issues, but that due to the oil loss I needed a new engine. I then had the car towed to another shop, who confirmed that I need a new engine because of oil loss, all due to an oil filter not screwed on correctly. I have written documentation that the engine replacement is required because of oil loss from a faulty oil change. I reached back out to Brake Masters, as well as their corporate office. My insurance company tried calling them as well. They would not share the information of who their insurance company is, and refused to pay for any of the damages that were caused by the oil loss to my car. The engine replacement ended up costing me approximately $7,000, and there were many additional incidental expenses. My car was in excellent condition, with no history of oil leakage, and it is expected that after a few weeks of driving after a recent oil change that there will still be oil in the car. Due to Brake Masters' negligent work, my engine was destroyed. Due to their predatory business practices, I had to pay for a replacement out of pocket. read more

This place saved the day!!! While driving to the Lava Caves the caliper rattled lose and I lost 90% of my brakes. It was a Saturday at 2pm and I was looking at the possibility of being stuck in Flagstaff till Monday! I limped my truck into Brake Masters and spoke with the Manager Juan, I showed him the issue and he quickly went to work!!! Juan found the part I needed and told me to be back at 4:00. When I got back at 4:00 (after a few local beers) Juan had my truck totally put back together and as good as new!! Without his help I would have been stranded and missed work, this place saved my bacon!!! Juan didn't gouge me on the price and I was able to enjoy the rest of my vacation! I bought lifetime brakes from here, I have already had to go back twice in a year for new ones. Come to find out they put them on wrong (brake'masters' huh?) and ruined my rotors. On November 18th we brought our car, a 2003 Ford Escape, in to the Flagstaff branch franchise of Brake Masters owned by Joel Tipps (#121). They (supposedly) did a full inspection and reported that the front brakes were fine, good for years of additional service, but the rear brakes needed over $400 worth of work done. We agreed, they kept our car overnight, and we picked it up the following day, November 19th. The final bill was for $432.60. On Monday evening, December 6th, only 17 days after Brake Masters declared that our front brakes were in perfect condition, they completely failed. We had no warning. My partner was at the wheel, traveling down the fairly steep hill on Rt. 66 right before the pedestrian crosswalk, and he suddenly had no way to stop at the red light. He had no choice but to run through the light, and barely managed to turn onto Blackbird Roost. He was able to use the uphill slope on Blackbird Roost to finally come to a stop, but it was only his masterful driving skill that got him to safety and avoid a potentially serious accident. Weather was not a factor; it was cold but clear and the road was free of ice. Traffic was moderate and flowing smoothly. This was pure mechanical failure; there were no triggering, contributory, or exacerbating factors involved. Rob (my partner) was at Brake Masters when they opened the next morning (Tuesday, the 7th), fully expecting to be able to have the car towed in. However, they provide no such service; we arranged for our own towing, got the car in, and Brake Masters said they would get it looked at right away. They didn't; they kept our car overnight, but when Rob went back the next day (the 8th), they hadn't even brought it into the garage for an initial evaluation, so Rob stayed there, waiting and watching, until eventually they started work. After they finished, when we looked over the paperwork detailing work requisitioned and services performed, we were appalled. We were expecting honesty, but what had actually happened was not reflected on the work forms, which grossly minimized the severity of the brake failure. We were expecting accountability, at least enough to completely inspect our brakes again. Most of all we were expecting competency, thinking that a company named Brake Masters would at least recognize if brake tubing looked like it needed to be replaced. Instead, Juan, the self-reported manager and the person we spoke with directly, was condescending, patronizing, and utterly unwilling to even acknowledge what could well have happened, not only to my partner but to any other completely innocent people on the street that night. His chiefest priority was to avoid any trace of responsibility. His only response to what might have been a horrible accident involving who knows how many other people, and the serious injury or even the death of my partner, was to hand us another bill for $360.45 and tell us, "If you want a car that doesn't need repairs, go buy a new one." On November 18th we had agreed to every recommendation that Brake Masters originally suggested for repairs and preventative maintenance, and at that time they had been happy to guarantee that our car was indeed road-worthy, even assuring us (unrealistically) that we could expect years of trouble-free driving. The second invoice stated that, "There is no guarantee that any other rubber line, bushing, and/or belt will not have an issue in the near or further future". Basically their "inspection" is worthless, and their utter lack of any kind of accountability makes all of the work they do on cars suspect at best. In my opinion, this moves beyond nonfeasance (failure to act where there was a duty to act) into criminal negligence, and you can bet we are reporting them to the Better Business Bureau. I've been coming to this Brake Masters for over 20 years with probably 6-7 different vehicles. Got my Ram ProMaster in same day as was overheated from driving here from California. Juan and Jon were very honest and diligent. They ordered all the parts I may have needed, but found the problem elsewhere. They did not unnecessarily install parts and got me back on the road the next day. Several 5 star shops told me they couldn't even get to my vehicle until the next week. Took my Honda CRV in for an oil change and asked for a new fuel filter and have them put "my" oil into the transfer case, right next to the transmission (I have done this myself). While waiting, another customer gave me a coupon for $4 off. After an hour and a half (for an estimated 1/2 hour to 45-minute wait), they tried to tell me the oil I brought was for the rear differential and offered to fill it (that would have been a disaster) and they couldn't find any transfer case in front. I told them "forget it". So, charged for oil change, never mentioned my requested fuel filter and completely ignored my request for a fuel filter. Some service... I'm done with them. I was going to get my engine mounts done at Big O Tires and I'm so happy I second guessed the price they gave me and came to Brake Masters instead. Big O Tires wanted to charge me 1200 while Brake Masters quoted me for half of that. I've been taken advantage of with other mechanics before and I feel like that's exactly what was happening at Big O Tires. Brake Masters did an amazing job, was extremely respectful and informative every time I called, as well as honest about how long the job would take. I would must rather go somewhere trustworthy. They are forthright in their business dealings and we have never felt like they are trying to coerce us into unnecessary service. So we call at about 4, an hour before they closed, and brake masters said they could get us in. So we drive the three whole blocks over (this place is so close to downtown!), hand the keys to Roy, and sit to fill out paperwork. Maybe four minutes later Roy walks back in with a pebble in his hand. "This was your problem. We're putting the tire back on now." So all in all, we were there for maybe 10 minutes, they guys were really cool, and they didn't charge us anything. They saved our Christmas vacation very quickly. I came here for a second opinion because, while at Jiffylube for a simple oil change, they told me that i needed to get my front brakes changed within two weeks or my car would completely brake. The manager here proceeded to tell me that there was absolutely nothing wrong with my brakes. I am a teenage girl so I expect to get taken advantage sometimes but this was just ridiculous . Once again let down. First, it took an hour when they said it would take half that for a simple oil change. My car sat parked and finished for 15 minutes before they told me it was done. I had a crying 17 week old baby suffering through this unnecessary wait. The only thing that brings me back is the buy one get one oil change. Funny thing there: I asked for an oil change. I got that for $29 and some change. That's fine. I proceeded to ask about the voucher for the next one being free. The guy said, "OH that oil change is more." We came in to drop the car off and after waiting at the front for quite a while with no service, Joel came up and we explained to him that we called and gave him some details before he rudely cut us off and said it wouldn't be done until Wednesday. We explained we'd been told Monday and that we would have to make some calls to arrange for this change and he snapped and told us "tell me soon so I can cancel the part" Despite our patience with him, he gave none back. Honest review incoming. Took it in to have an overheating problem checked out. I was assured over the phone that the inspection would be free, and if they needed to do anything that required a charge, they would call me first. Arrived to find that there was corrosion causing the system to pull air rather than coolant. Then they handed me a bill for 65 bucks for "inspections fees," and told me that that would come out of the $120 dollars they intended to charge me for the replacement of the parts. I complained to the manager Joel, who instantly got a little more defensive than I expected, but eventually we agreed to a 10% off and a free oil change. Forgiving as I am, I forwent leaving a bad review on the chance that this was just a bad day. Came back two days before thanksgiving to cash in the free oil change. I dropped it off around 11:30am and guessed it would take about an hour and a half based on the cars in the lot. The mechanic estimated about an hour. I waited for a bit, seeing another person dropping off his car for a different problem. Left for a bit and came back around 1 pm, expecting it to be or be close to done. It was still sitting in the parking lot, seemingly unmoved from when I parked it. I gave them the benefit of the doubt and assumed it was done and they hadn't called me yet. So I waited and watched the guy who had dropped off his car, and apparently had work done, pick up his car and leave. at 2, I finally saw someone get into my car. Finally, by 3PM my oil was finally changed. I am generally forgiving, and never want to come off dishonest out of spite, but the BrakeMasters on Milton is terribly inconsistent.
