I was hearing the typical sound when brakes need to be replaced (the squealing sound). Brought my car into Brake Masters shop and was helped by Shawn (Not sure if I spelled his name right). He was super helpful. Didn't give me some outrageous price and tell me I had to get my brakes replaced right at the moment. He was straight up with me telling me that I'm nearing that time and that I would need to get my rotors replaced as well, but told me that I should be good for a little bit longer but if I start to hear the sound more and more frequent to come in and they will get it done for me. These guys are great. My "Low Tire Pressure" light came on, as well as my "Brake Fluid" light so I stopped in to see them. Instead of lying to me or telling me I need something I don't, the super helpful guy put air in my tires, topped off my brake fluid and did a pretty intense visual check on my brakes....all for free. He told me I was good for now, but come back in about two months, I will need new brake pads then. I cannot tell you how many times car service guys try to take advantage of me because I'm a young girl who doesn't really know about cars. It was so refreshing to have an honest and knowledgeable guy look things over and really help me. He didn't charge me a dime for the courtesy, even though I pretty much insisted on some sort of payment. He just said, "Do me a favor and come back when you need a real service". We all know how hard it is to find an honest mechanic. Luckily, I have 1 right up the street. Today was my second time at the Brake Masters at Shea & Scottsdale Rd. I had somehow managed to break the button that automatically opens the gas cap by my steering column. I had been quoted a full day of work and a $90 price tag by a reputable repair shop close by. Remembering my first good experience at Brake Masters, I figured I'd give them a shot, even though it wasn't their specialty. Within 10 minutes it was fixed and there was no charge. (Always tip the mechanic, even if there is no charge) The honesty, professionalism and friendliness of the staff has made me a loyal customer as long as I'm in Scottsdale. A++ read more

These people are amazingly honest!!! I have taken both my cars there with brake problems, they diagnosed the problems quickly, and, expecting the worst, was very pleased that the problems turned out to be minor. They could have told me anything and I would have believed them. My one car was leaking brake fluid and the pedal barely worked. I have brought both my 1994 Miata and my 1969 Mercury Cougar here. They are knowledgeable and honest. When I took my Miata if for an oil change at another place I was told the front end way way out of alignment and required a lot of work. I brought it to Brake Masters and told them what the other place said, they called me back 45 minutes later saying it was only a little out of alignment and could easily be corrected. Half the price of the other guys. That earned my repeat business. read more

VERY HONEST, & quick!! I was told by my dealership that I was due for front brakes but I was not willing to pay the dealerships price. I decided to ignore my dealerships request and have been driving around town for 2+ months now. I went in today to Brake Masters to ask for a brake inspection which is FREE by the way and spoke to Al. Not even 10 minutes later he said I didn't need brakes. Let's say I was very impressed with their services.... I had brake replacement, oil change, tube change etc.... I was impressed with their service quality and cost. Then, they changed the manager.... the new manager told me that the pipes on the front and side were leaking... and it is very dangerous to drive hmmm... leaking but my driveway wasn't stained.... he told me it'd be $1,200 to 1,900 to fix the issue. Ok, my 2004 Toyota Camry isn't worth more than $4,500.... and the fix isn't gonna cost that much! So I brought my car to Whitney in South Scottsdale, and their mechanics told me there isn't any leak at all! Ok... someone is lying their way out to get more sales and prove themselves. I'm very disappointed... I thought I found the right place, but this new manager ruined my dream! Ok, the above incident happened in November/December... I'm back in store today.... it's a new manager. He changed my battery and did my oil change. Pretty good service. I'm back. read more

First time visitor of this establishment and...WOW. Beyond impressed. I came in to have brake pads done while waiting to have my car checked out, another customer came in to pick up his. He was talking with the store manager Al at the counter. Al let him know that the initial repair they all thought needed to be done actually was a much more simple, very cheap fix. The customer was very vocal about how impressed he was with the honesty from Al when Al knew that he was expecting to be paying a lot more. He could have just done the other fix and charged him a big amount the customer said. Al said "that's not how we do things here." Pat (assistant manager) came out to talk to me about my brake pads. Turns out they just needed to be cleaned to stop the squeaking and were actually in good shape. Saving me money I had assumed I would need to pay. New customer for life. I'll tell everyone about you. I wouldn't give this place your business right now they have taken to practicing dishonest treatment of their costumers probably to makeup for lost business during COVID. I went for an oil change and a new battery and was quoted 90 bucks for the battery but final bill was over 300 dollars and they refused to give me a reasonable explanation only acted like they didn't care what I thought. I've never been treated this dishonesty by these people. On a side note the normal people who I dealt with were not there so they must have been released in favor of dishonest liars. I love this store. I was told from another brake masters when i was in for an oil change needed brakes soon. I always go to this store unless need oil change as the other store is 5 minutes from work. so I made an apt to have them checked at the she's location because i trust them fully. My brakes have no issues n r great. He showed me the thickness of them all and found out I have a completely different issue with a control arm. They walked me through what it was doing, showed me how my tire was vibrating on one side compared to normal on the other and explained everything to me. They do great work, have great prices, and most of all...have the UTMOST INTEGRITY! There have been times when I've gone in and they've told me my brakes are good for another 10,000 miles and haven't charged me. I went in today because I was worried I had some front end damage. They gave me a call to let me know the minor issues, nothing needed to be fixed, and it was free of charge! They could have made up stuff that needed fixing, charged me an arm and a leg, but they didn't. It doesn't matter what type of car you have, this is the place to go. Brake Masters on Scottsdale Rd at Shea is an extremely honest shop. Twice I have personally seen this. The first time was when the Honda dealer told me my CR-V front brakes were at 2.5 mil and needed to be replaced. I balked at the repair estimate, even with their "coupon price." I stopped at Brake Masters and they were significantly cheaper and offered a lifetime guarantee so I scheduled an appointment. I went there two days later and was surprised when they notified me I DID NOT need brakes. My brakes were at 4 mil. They said they see this quite often. There was no charge. On my other car ( Accord) I was getting a bad constant right front brake noise. I figured a brake pad was bad or something like the caliper was defective. I was due for an oil change so I scheduled an oil change and brake repair. When they called me to pick up the car they showed me the backing plates from the pads had come loose and were rubbing. They removed them and did a road tested to make sure. When I got the bill it was only for the Synthetic Oil Service. I asked why they didn't charge for fixing the brakes The manager (AST Manager) Jaymes kiddingly said, I can if you want but we try to be an honest shop. We just fixed it as part of the brake inspection. I'm telling all our friends how satisfied we are and hope anyone reading this will feel confident they can use this shop and not get ripped off. read more

I went here based on the Yelp reviews. I gave the front guy 3 tries, 3, to not be sexist and condescending, and he failed. Jim(?) I think his name was. I had a coupon for an oil change, to which he condescendingly "educated" me that my car takes more oil than standard (thanksss, how would I ever know? It's not like I've owned this car for years). And now it comes to light that he over charged me even more. I need my brakes replaced; I then mentioned my brakes suck compared to this rental car I had driven early this month. He interrupted me and once again talked down to me that "of course a new car would be better". Once again, thank you sir, how would I ever have come to that conclusion without you? Now 2 weeks later it turned out they improperly reset my check engine light. I called to confirm they had time to fix it and once again, Jim answered the phone and let me know in the most condescending way possible that off course I don't need to make an appointment, they could just do it. Eye roll. 3 times, I tried. Instead of going back to this location to get the light reset, I went to one closer to my house (the N Cave Creek location) and was met with the utmost professionalism and most courteous staff that I have ever met at an auto shop. They taught me how to reset the light, got me scheduled to get my brakes fixed and continually thanked me for my service as a nurse (which was totally unnecessary but kind). I have never felt comfortably enough at an auto store to ask questions or question quotes etc etc but the owner and his employees were so honest and welcoming that I had no problem being upfront with them. !!!!!!!!Should be called RIP-OFF-MASTERS!!!!!!!!!!! Do you want to pay $382.00 for JUST the REAR BRAKES?!?!?!? If so this is your place!!! I am a mechanic and while on a long distance road trip I needed my rear brakes done. Since I did not have my tools with me I had no choice. When dropping off the car I asked for them to retain any parts that were replaced so I could look at them because I know mechanics make their money by replacing parts that don't need to be replaced. Guess what??? These "buggers" did exactly that!!! They replaced both the rear rotors (discs) that did not need replacing. They said over the phone "the rotors mic'ed (micrometer measurement) out less and show .010 less than minimum tolerance" Since I was not there to verify I believed them. When I picked up the car I visually looked at the old rotors and they looked to be "turn-able" (can be machined to return to serviceable condition). I pointed out that cast into the rotor is the words "Minimum thickness .072 inches" I asked for their micrometer and mic'ed out the discs and verified that the lowest thickness of the wear on the "worst of the two" disc was only .78 inches. The other one was even thicker... so this means that BOTH DISCS were still within tolerance and could be machined. So why did they lie to me when they said "the discs were .10 less than minimum tolerance" when they were still serviceable? Because they are a RIP OFF and are LI ARS and they take YOUR MONEY by replacing your parts that do not need to be replaced!!! STAY AWAY FROM THIS PLACE!!!!!! read more

I have been going to Brake Masters since the 1990's but the guys at this location are downright ornery. I was getting a full service lube and oil change for my 2014 Dodge Charger. While waiting, I had to observe the manager arguing with one customer right in front of everyone. When my car was finished, the mechanic who helped me mentions he has a '15 Charger and it came with synthetic (instead of conventional like mine). I told him that the conventional has been great; the car's automatic oil change indicator system has allowed me to get up to 10K miles between changes. Then he starts lecturing me that conventional oil MUST be changed every 3K miles no matter what. I disagreed, explaining that the owner's manual clearly says you are good up to 10K or sooner if the indicator comes on. Then he lectures again and gets angry, grumbling about how he has been doing this for 35 years, and that oil "stops working after 3,000 miles." I told him that he may need to do some research because it seems that technology has changed. So we have a mechanic there uninformed about changes in his own industry over the last 35 years. My advice to Brake Masters: Just because you want us to come in every 3K miles so you can make more money, please don't LIE to the customers. And don't argue with a loyal customer just because you think you are right, because, as in this case, you might be wrong. And if that guy is reading this, this is pasted from my service manual: Engine Oil Viscosity -- 5.7L Engine MOPAR® SAE 5W-20 engine oil or equivalent such as Pennzoil® or Shell Helix® is recommended for all operating temperatures. [these are conventional oils] Your vehicle is equipped with an engine oil change indicator system. The "Oil Change Due" message will flash in the EVIC display for approximately 10 seconds after a single chime has sounded to indicate the next scheduled oil change interval. The engine oil change indicator system is duty cycle based, which means the engine oil change interval may fluctuate dependent upon your personal driving style. Change Engine Oil The oil change indicator system will remind you that it is time to take your vehicle in for scheduled maintenance. Refer to the "Maintenance Schedule" for further information. NOTE: Under no circumstances should oil change intervals exceed 10,000 miles (16,000 km) or twelve months, whichever occurs first. Nowhere in the manual does it mention doing an oil change any sooner than when the indicator comes on except in the special case of "Severe Duty" when used in dusty and off-road environment. I would never do business with this location nor any BM ever again. In November of 2014 I went to the BM on Carefree and had my oil changed, brake pads replaced and my brake line flushed. Upon inspection the front desk guy said that my rotors had been worn down and I needed new ones, that they couldn't machine them. My truck had roughly 85k miles on it and I figured "sure" it was about time that i had them replaced if the "expert" is telling me to replace them. Fast forward to now I took my truck in for new pads at the Scottsdale/Shea location. The pads were worn and I could hear metal against metal (My fault for putting it off). Took it in and asked for my oil to be changed (which BM has done every 3-5k miles on my truck since my original service with them). I get a call from the Store manager stating that my Rotors were worn down so much that they couldn't machine them and I needed new ones. I obviously was put off by this and stated "I just got new rotors last year on there, how are they already worn that much?". His response was "well I can't tell you if you did or didn't but they are worn and you need new ones". I then told him that BM was the one who replaced them so it would be surprising that I would need them so soon at 113k miles (28k after them being replaced). I told him to call the other store and find out if they did replace them as they said. He did and returned my call and told me that They had done the work but "You're obviously abusive to your brakes and car and that's why you need new ones". I this point (very irritated) told him to not replace the rotors and just do the brakes and the oil change. I received my vehicle back and immediately inspected the rotors...There was NO issue at all with them and plenty of "meat" left on them. I then took it to a local mechanic and had him do a visual inspection on them. I explained that I just got them replaced 28k miles ago do they look as though they need to be replaced...I wasn't experiencing any vibrations or shaking. His response "If they look like that after 28k miles, then you'd probably be good another 75k". I then went to my facebook where I know a few Mechanics posted a picture of my rotors and asked their opinion...ALL of them stated "if they aren't warped then they look absolutely fine and almost brand new". This is absolutely absurd that they would suggest repairs that aren't needed. If the company is losing business that's not the consumers fault, maybe get better PR. Don't try and "pull one over" on the consumer. There was absolutely no reason for me to have paid almost 250$ for a new set of rotors. I took this to their Corporate Facebook page and posted this almost identically. Their page requires the owner to review before allowing posts to be viewed as public. So I then posted this on one of their public posting...I went back to their page and now I'm blocked from their Facebook. This is not professional and completely uncalled for. I will be taking all my business somewhere else...mostly likely a small business rather than a corporate ran business. read more

Worst oil change experience I ever had. Rude people with bad work ethic. If you wanna get bad treatment with some cursing and a good deal of argument, then here is your place. Otherwise stay away at all costs. After seeing the good reviews, I wanted to try them out for an oil change. What a big mistake it was. Even though it is completely unnecessary for doing the oil change on my car, since both the oil filter and oil drain bolt are accessible without removing the cover, they removed my splash cover, and then were not able to put it back on. The cover extends vertically behind the passenger side front tire and horizontally under the subframe, and protects the serpentine belt area, pulleys and the alternator from debris and so on from the outside. I asked them to put it back on but they simply refused it claiming that it cannot be put back on securely, since the cover is old. Well, if they thought it cannot be put securely back on, why did they remove it without discussing it with me? The cover was on and in working condition when I brought in the car, and I didn't have problems with it. Now they unnecessarily removed it without even asking me and could not put it back on. However, they were very generous and let me choose between throwing it away or putting it to the front seat. I opted for keeping it. After I got the car back, I opened the hood and realized they also lost one the 4 screws which secure the ignition cassette to the engine. I called them to inquire about it and they said it should have fallen itself. The screw is going vertically into the engine. For a 1.5 inch screw to climb opposite to the gravity and getting loose completely and falling by itself is very unlikely. I check my engine bay regularly and I know all the 4 screws have been there for the last 4 years. Since the splash cover protected very important parts of the engine, I didn't want to take the risk of water splashing to my alternator or small pebbles getting in to the serpentine belt area during the monsoon season. So, I decided to put the cover back on myself since they already refused to put it back on. After working 2 hours under Phoenix sun with sore knees and dehydration, I was able to put the cover back on. Since I had to correct their mistake, I went back to the shop and requested a refund for the oil change or reimbursement for the time I had to spend to put the cover back on. Well, let me tell you, the manager there is good with curse words, varying from regular sh*t to f***ing or more politely to frigging. After I explained him the situation he basically said the cover is not necessary for the car, I was making a big deal for a frigging cover and that he can't deal with this sh*t now. Their excuse was that removing the cover was necessary since the oil from the filter was dripping on it while they were doing the oil change, and they didn't want to be reliable in case I saw some of the residue of that dripping and thought the car was leaking, which could easily be solved by wiping the cover after they were done. Well as I mentioned before, removing the cover is completely unnecessary and they did it without my consent. I reminded them they did not get my consent and they said they don't need it since it was part of the oil change. Go figure really. Moreover the manager informed me that since I know "so much" about the cars that I should know that screws fall all the time. Well, I didn't encounter it this far in my car. My delightful conversation with the manager bore its fruits, after some of his nice cursing of course, and I got the number of the district manager. The conversation I had with the district manager was not that different from the shop manager. After learning that I won't be doing any more business with them, he assured me that he denied my refund or reimbursement requests. His reasoning was since they did the oil change and I was able to put the cover back on, there was no problem. So, if you are into some suffering, cursing and bad treatment here is your place. Otherwise don't bring your car here. Also don't trust the good reviews you see. Check all the other sources and bring your car to shops with good work ethic and polite customer treatment. And a note to myself to do the oil change myself the next time. read more

CUSTOMER BEWARE It's a good shop that does good work when they want to work on your vehicle. I must say to the customer though to BEWARE. Do not under any circumstances, in anyway leave your vehicle with them over night. Even when they promise you they will take care of your car and leave it inside the shop with locked bay doors, they lie to you and won't care what happens to your vehicle. Then if anything happens to your car, they hand you the paper you signed when you dropped off the car that they are not responsible for anything regarding your vehicle or if it gets broken into. Even though you only left your vehicle because they promised to keep it locked up in the bay. Only to find out they left it on the street and couldn't even lock the doors or arm the alarm, so the vehicle gets broken into. The manager claims he works on high end sports cars from doctors, lawyers and even Larry Fitzgerald's car. Does that mean he takes better care of their cars because there're more expensive and I'm just the common working-class man. Or how would those doctor's, lawyers and Larry Fitzgerald act to find out the manager doesn't take good care of their cars, lies to them and doesn't park the cars inside, leaves them on the street, doesn't lock the vehicle or arm the alarm. Everything in my vehicle was stolen, dash ripped out as they tried to get my radio and all they can say is "my bad." They admit to not locking the car or arming the alarm and admit he lied to me and didn't park the car inside the facility like they promised me. Which is the only reason I left the vehicle with them. I'm warning you not to believe them and under no circumstance leave your vehicle with them even if they promise you stuff, they are not held accountable and don't care if your vehicle gets broken into. Yes it's on the form you sign but you'd expect them to do what they promise and put the vehicle inside the faculty like they promised or at least lock the vehicle, arm the alarm as that's what it's there for or hell call the customer to at least give him the heads up to pick up the vehicle instead of leaving it unsecure on the street but again I'm just the working man and not a doctor, lawyer or Larry Fitzgerald and don't have a high end car like the manager said. WOW, they were great. After a terrible experience with a shady company, I took my car to have brake masters look it over. I dropped the car off and they had it completed in only a couple hours. I had previously been told that I needed a whole new rear brake job, brake masters was honest and said they only needed to adjust my brakes. When asked how much this would cost they said "don't worry about it, just remember us when it is time to have your car serviced again" I went and picked up my car, again tried to pay for the repair and they insisted it was free. I tried out this Brake Masters because I am looking for a new place to regularly get an oil change. I was decided to give it a try because even though it was more expensive than my previous oil changes, I was able to find a online coupon on the Brake Masters website, which swayed my decision to come here. I made the appointment in advanced, but when I got there it was not very busy at all. I asked them if they could additionally do the basic checks on my car and check out if anything was going on with my power-steering since I had heard a noise. He drove my car around and came and let me know while I was waiting that he did not hear anything but would double-check when he was completing the oil change. I left to get lunch after 15 minutes and got a call 15 minutes into my lunch saying that my car was already ready for pick-up. It was much faster than expected. When I came to pick-up my car, the gentleman went over my paperwork with me and verified with me that the coupon was applied before my credit card was charged. He was very nice and NOT degrading, sexist, or rude at all (as I have experienced with many other companies). For me, it was worth a little bit extra money (even after the coupon) to come here in comparison to where I used to go because of the helpful staff and genuine customer service. Overall: I will come back here again for my car, but will always look online for a coupon prior to coming in! read more

USE CAUTION I went in for an oil change and got their 21 point inspection. They mentioned I had 10% left on my rear brakes. I turned down getting brakes, as i was getting rid of the car in 6 weeks. They told me it wouldn't last 6 weeks, but I said, "thanks, but no thanks". When I got my car back and drove home, my car immediately started overheating. I was able to get it home safely, after turning off the A/C and turning on the heat, (100 degree day), dangerously getting it off the road. I took it back when they opened the next day, they told me that the relays for the radiator fans had both stopped working. I suggested that someone at Brake Masters must have mistakenly bumped something or overloaded them, causing the issue. They said absolutely not, and that it was a simple coincidence. They charged me 209 dollars to replace the relays. My car had no relay issues at all in the 8 years I have been driving it. It was working fine when I pulled in to Brake Masters. When I pulled out, they were toast (supposedly...I can't prove that they even replaced them, I did not ask for the old relays...my mistake). Is it possible it was a coincidence, as they suggested? Yes. I have to admit that strange things happen in the face of overwhelming odds every day. That is the only reason that I'm giving 2 stars instead of one. I first brought my 1995 Yukon in for service years ago simply because the shop is close enough to my house that I could walk home while it was serviced. I keep coming back because of the diligence and care shown by the entire staff; the reasonable cost, and the outstanding results. It's no accident that my 20 year-old car is still on the road! Okay, so I needed brake work done. Normally, I have a mechanic who does work on my vehicles at home and charges me $55/hr plus trip charge. The only problem is that I have to get the parts for him and he takes a little longer so I thought, after reading the great reviews about Brake Masters on yelp, that I would give them a shot. I printed off the Lifetime Premium Brakes coupon was $124.95 (reg. price $149.95). The coupon covered... * Front disc or rear drum * Resurface rotors or drums * Premium Bendix pads or shoes * Repack bearings as applicable * Lifetime warranty on pads or shoes I dropped my vehicle off and went to breakfast. I hadn't gotten the estimate yet but even if they replaced the rotors ($21.99/rotor) and calipers ($21.99/caliper) it would come to less tax maybe around $220.00, which is reasonable. My walk-in off-the-street pricing was from O'Reilly Auto Parts who are right around the corner from Brake Masters. I was enjoying breakfast when I got the call about the estimate of ... (drum roll)....$515.00. (My jaw dropped!) That is almost $300 above my worst case estimate!!! I picked up my vehicle, drove around the block, picked up my parts ($220 including $70 in core charges) and am meeting my mechanic at noon. Max price $300...a $250 savings. I visited Break Masters on Scottsdale Rd and Shea to check my breaks because they were squeaking, they have a sales guy that pitches the services after the technician looks at the vehicle. The sales guy tried to convince me that I needed to replace all four rotors because there was not enough meat left to turn them and all 8 pads because I sprayed anti squeak on the back of the pads for $650+ The anti squeak did not damage anything just left a stain where sprayed until it washed off at my next car wash. I had my breaks inspected by another garage and they told me there was still 90% of my pads left and my rotors were nearly 100%.
