During the Yadkin Yuletide tour, we visited Brandon Hills vineyard. They have a cozy, welcoming tasting bar. It was later in the day and the vineyard was not crowded. We were greeted and served quickly. The tasting was quick and we enjoyed the wines we selected. If you like almond, I highly recommend their Amaretto Amore. Wines Tasted: 2016 Viognier: dry and refreshing 2015 Barbera: earthy, soft Peach delight: peachy, sweet, light, refreshing Pineapple delight: light, faint, slightly sweet Blueberry delight: tart, definitely blueberry in flavor Amaretto Amore: light, great almond flavor Water breaks were offered between the tastings and they are very dog friendly. So we went on a day they were having some sort of wine and food pairing. I felt like we were being in ignored and there was just pone person calling for new bottles of wine. They were ok but charge quite a bit for a tasting. We came here back in July as part as a wine birthday trip of visiting 4 different wineries. Out of the four wineries, this was my least favorite. Service was great, but overall, the wines were just okay. We tried: *Sweet Amelia - just okay *Peach Delight - my favorite of the day, but it was definitely a light peach wine, would have preferred a stronger peach flavor. I did leave with a bottle of this one. *Blueberry Delight - just okay *Cranberry Delight - just okay *Pineapple Delight - just okay *Amaretto Amore - I was looking forward to this one the most as I have not had an amaretto wine before, but love amaretto. This was just a big disappointment and not that great. *Watermelon wine slushy - very good! I would recommend just based off of the service and enjoying our wine flight out on the deck at our own pace on a beautiful day. Just unfortunately, not my favorite wines. read more

This was my final stop of the day on the Yadkin Valley Winter Reds Tour. I had already picked a bottle at another winery I was planning to have with my Papa Murphy's Cowboy pizza that evening, but after my tasting of Raptor Red my mind was changed immediately. I also requested some of the Nona's recipe meatballs that were included with the tour tasting, but sadly they were unavailable to accommodate. Great times. Great wines. A deck with a view of the winery & a wonderful wine tasting. 6 dry. 5 sweet. The best wine was the white merlot. Not too dry. Not too sweet. Try a wine tasting. 10 on the menu. Justin is quite the host. Giving a good description of each category and history of the vineyard. Bring a picnic and enjoy with your friends & family. Beautiful back area with an amazing view of rolling hills! The wine is affordable at between $5 -$8 a glass. The bartender/maybe owner was friendly and helpful, but this place felt very local. Local is usually awesome, but it took a while to get service. No-one welcomed us when we walked in - instead we sat there for a while before being greeted. Then when we left it was unclear if the glass was supposed to stay or be taken with us. I guess the experience would have been better if someone took the time to explain how everything worked especially with COVID. Which reminds me we were shocked to see people behind the bar with no masks not one but three people then most of the patrons didn't have masks on even those not drinking. The lack of COVID standards being followed - the posted sign said 10 people for emergency capacity yet there were more add that with the lack of mask wearing - I didn't feel safe. read more

Went here on a Beautiful fall Saturday and we enjoyed it so much! They had a little festival going on selling some handmade goods and a food truck whipping up Eats. The wine testing experience I enjoyed so much! Justin was knowledgeable and treated everyone that walked through the door like an old friend. They have a really nice selection of wines, but I personally favor the sweet ones. I asked if they sold cheeseboards & they don't due to COVID ruining everybody's life. Can't wait to come back and grab some bottles for the holidays. read more

Brandon Hills continues exceeding expectations! We came here for a friend's birthday and it couldn't have been a better setting. Their wine list boasts something for everyone - they have sweet, dry, champagne... even sparkling water for the mom-to-be in our group. They made us feel special and important. The owner, Larry, was in this day, realized it was my friend's birthday and gifted her one of the Valentine's Day gift baskets they had - it even had a bottle of champagne in it! It was so kind and truly made her day special. The wine is great but the service really seals the deal. They have great seating, inside and outside. Brandon Hills boasts two of the best reds in the Yadkin Valley: Raptor Red and the Barbera not to mention some delicious and unique sweeter wines (I highly recommend the Raspberry Rendezvous). Justin is extremely knowledgeable and helpful- I have seen him engage in thoughtful conversation with people new to the wine scene and experienced connoisseurs alike! Great service and great wine. I'm so glad Brandon Hills is back open after a long January off. The reds here continue to develop, especially now that the new owners have started putting their stamp on the wines. The Barbara is probably my favorite wine, but I also enjoy the Raptor Red Blend and Rose. Justin, the tasting manager, is a great host, and I hope he can make good on his promise of Frose's in the tasting room when it warms up. The owners regularly host tasting events that include champagnes and wines from France. Overall, Brandon Hills is a great stop right outside Yadkinville. read more

This little vineyard may be off the beaten path but they have some very nice wines! The Rose is one of the best I've ever had. Light, with notes of strawberries and apricots and a smooth silky finish. The Barbera is a well-balanced red with cherry and dark plum notes and soft tannins. Justin is very friendly and helpful knowledgeable about the wines and the vineyard. Please take time to visit. read more

We visited Brandon Hills Vineyard on a whim as we were on our way to the more familiar Hanover Park winery. I'm not exactly sure when they opened their tasting room but it must have been fairly recently because we only stumbled on it by luck from Googling North Carolina wineries while actually on the road. This is an example of how fast the NC wine business is moving and changing as new ones pop up out of the blue. LOCATION: This winery is certainly off the beat so have your GPS or old school map handy. On the plus side, it is only about 6 miles from Hanover Park which is one of the best boutique wineries in the area. It's also only about 20 miles from Raylen Vineyards which is also good so you can make a mini-tour out of it. WINE: BHV wine list includes about 9 wines with 5 of those single vinifera varieties and the rest being blends or non-grape wines. On the single grape side, it seems this winery focuses on Pinot Gris and Barbera. I'm guessing that as they grow more single varietals will also be available. When we visited they offered both the '08 and '09 Pinot Gris (both $12) with the newer '09 being superior. We pick up a bottle of this because the value was good relative to the flavor. Their other white varietal was the ubiquitous (in NC at least) '09 Viognier ($15). The nose of this was great and the flavor profile was pretty good but there is a lot of competition for this grape in the region so I wouldn't say it stood above others. The sole red single varietal available was the '08 Barbera ($19) was actually very enjoyable and a nice find in Yadkin area. I personally wouldn't plunk 19 bucks on it but I applaud their effort on this one. There is also a blush available made with 100% merlot grapes ($15) with a residual sugar listed as 4%. I'm not a sweet wine guy but I wouldn't have pegged this as having that much residual so a job balancing the acidity level. BHV offers a red blend they call Raptor Red ($19) made from Cab Sauv, Merlot and dashes of Petit Verdot and Viognier. In my opinion, the wine felt a little thin and at 19 dollars I held off. There was also a blackberry wine ($15) and something that I found most interesting called Amoretto Amore ($15). This a red wine with a bit of sweetness that I would swear was fortified with Amoretto, however, the guy helping us swore it wasn't. I'm not sure I believe that because I can't explain the flavor profile otherwise but it was really interesting and pleasant in dessert pairing. We got one just for the novelty! While still new and young, I'm pretty impressed with the overall quality of the wines. It seems like they are committed to creating serious offerings and will definitely be checking in on them. At this point, 3 Stars for the wine with a nod to potential. SERVICE: When we arrived, there was pretty much already and full house and we had to wait a few for a couple of open bar seats. However, the young guy manning the tasting room did a great job keeping things like and entertaining. A large group already there was also very complimentary of him. He's got a background in wine making which is always a bonus when trying to have a meaningful conversation about the product. 4 Stars for service. VALUE: My assessment on the value is that it hits both ends of the spectrum. The '09 Pinot Gris was nicely priced but some of the others were on the high end compared to other providers. I say this fully recognizing that I don't expect Food Lion prices - I know small wineries have huge cost of goods numbers and I often buy wine at above average prices. 3 Stars for value. ATMOSPHERE: While a bit small, the tasting room is very nicely done and includes a great deck in the back that overlooks the valley. It's a very nice, relaxing environment. If I had the time, we would have definitely chilled out for awhile and consumed a bottle (probably of the '09 gris). 4 stars for the neatness and view. Overall, this was a fun and unexpected fine. My sense is that there is a gem here in the process of polishing of the edges. Include BHV on your next Yadkinville wine trip! read more

Brandon Hills is relatively new, with its first harvest in 2007. Their selection of dry reds was very limited to a Barbera, a Merlot, and a blend called Raptor Red, but all quite good, particularly the Barbera. They offer more dry and semi-dry whites, a couple of which I found quite palatable, the 2010 Pinot Gris being the best. As with most of the vineyards in the Yadkin River Valley, the setting is picturesque, and they offer plenty of outdoor seating, including an arbor-like gazebo. It was scorching hot out there yesterday, but we persevered and enjoyed a glass on the porch. The staff is knowledgeable, friendly, and very accommodating. They are also avid supporters of the Carolina Raptor Center, which is dedicated to the conservation of birds of prey, through education, research, and the rehabilitation of injured and orphan raptors. read more
