My husband went in to the shop this morning after a phone call telling us that the part was there. He got there at 10 AM in the morning. When he got there, the person who was attending him couldn't find the part and instead of following through to find a part, he would attend to other customers who had come in after my husband. Finally, someone else came over and tried to help my husband and found the part. They told him that wouldn't take too long to do it, perhaps 15 minutes to a half an hour. So my husband went for a walk. When he came back, nothing had been done. To make a long story short, it took four hours for a simple 15 minute repair to happen. He left at 2 PM after waiting around for four hours I have to say this is not very professional. read more

At the Hot Rods at the Beach show, I had the pleasure to meet owner, Craig and his quality Team. A simple question regarding the absence of a KeYs for my rear trunk lid of my newly owned 1942Ford super DLX very rare 2dr. Within minutes of visiting my car, they have a solution to Just Make a key for it!, By hand and with passion and dedication to satisfy their customer they had just met for the first time. Immediately they started to work the inner tumblers to make visible markings on the brass key blank, working it and not giving up because No was not an option today. Mind you this is at a car show at the Boardwalk Santa Cruz and they walked away from a pop-up tent on location to push their sales, and then they are at the rear of my rod working with minimum hand tools and a file to achieve what I determined to be impossible. 8 other bay area locksmiths had advised me to just change out the 80 or old trunk handle if i can find one and never even attempted to work on the inner tumbler component that came with new keys! It was a challenge but Before long I get the comment just 3 more minutes.. and before I knew it Craig was up from his knees and commented I'm ready to lock and open your trunk lid..I was amazed AND could not believe what Craig had just accomplished. Determination, confident and passionate about his expertise he turned and replied... I will go back to the popup in the next row and make 3 keys. I won't even repeat what the nothing charge was for all that effort under the sun and i could get back to my car show and not ever again worry about stepping away from my Sweet Ride. . . Amazing price... People -- if you need keys made for house car or locks ..BRASS KEYS LOCKSMITH can and will get the job done and you will be very satisfied with their services. Every once in a while - and it's pretty rare - you find a business for whom five Yelp stars isn't enough. This business, and Andrew in particular, deserve six stars. We had a family front door lock stop working at an older relative's house in the middle of the woods in the Santa Cruz mountains, and we were so worried that our relative would get locked out in inclement weather. Brass Key set up an appointment for us with Andrew. Andrew notified us when he was on his way, and again when he had arrived at the house. He tackled, disassembled, took the door off the hinges, and ultimately fixed, a 1970s-vintage front door lockset that was refusing to lock and unlock from both the inside and the outside. All the way through the process he kept us informed ("it looks like I'm going to have to take the door off the hinges to fix the lock's alignment" "I'm going to have to realign the door" etc.). I am sure that most other locksmiths would have taken one look at the broken antique handleset and sold us a new keyed entry handleset, and then required us to replace or rekey all the locks in the house. But a new one wouldn't have fit with the character of the door and the front of the house. Taking the time to fix the existing front door lock was the best possible solution to the problem. We asked him to check the other locks and doors in the house - we'd seen miscellaneous issues with them - and he ended up fixing passage door knobs, and then he noticed that the key was so worn out that it was going to have problems locking and unlocking all the doors, so he recreated the key and then made copies for us. There were several problems throughout the house due to age and deferred maintenance, and he both fixed and tested his fixes. We talked and he described his work, and it was very easy to pay via credit card over the phone. He then sent a very detailed and itemized receipt, and photographs of all his work so that we could share them with our relative. It is such a relief to us to know that our relative will no longer have issues getting in and out, and safely around inside, their house. It is very, very rare to find someone as thorough, as detail-oriented, as meticulous, and as professional as Andrew! Six stars! read more

It was really great working this installer. He helped reinforce my front door by installing longer screws in my door hinges and also bored out my dead bolt opening. The installers of my new build home didn't make the dead bolt opening deep enough so the dead bolt never fully extended when locked. He also did the same for my fire-door and re-keyed the deadbolt in the fire door to match the front door key. My home feels much more secure. read more

The five Star rating system does not describe the quality, service, professionalism that exists in the work that Andrew at Brass Key Locksmith is capable of. Our kitchen door lever was broken for over 12 years and the "professionals" that I had previously called all recommended a new door or a new device. All of the doors have matching levers and are keyed. Andrew came and within a very short time the door was fixed, in our amazement. He not only is a craftsman in his trade, but incorporates the ability to search and find replacement parts versus just taking out and buying new. Unbelievable customer service! I called to see if they fixed classic car locks. I mentioned my rather obscure car ('56 Packard) and they said they would give it a look if I could get the car over to them but no guarantee they could fix it on the spot. Which made sense as I've been pretty desperate to fix these locks and this was the third locksmith I had taken it to and the other two just gave me an "I don't know what's wrong" and a large bill after looking for 30 minutes. I said I'd try and come by Brass Key at 4pm. I showed up and they had researched my car locks on their own, found 60 year old user manuals, and were EAGER to try and fix the car. Multiple technicians came out to help and they diagnosed a faulty mechanism that would need to be ordered. They explained and showed me on my car what was happening and it made total sense. They could have stopped there and I would still rave of the service, but they went one step further and tried some workarounds that would make the locks works that day without ordering and replacing the proprietary locking mechanism of a car manufacturer that had been out of business since 1958. One of the ideas they told me to try worked!! It ended up saving me hundreds of dollars and works extremely well. These guys love their job and love helping people. 10 out of 10 service. Brass Key was all right. The positive is that they are responsive and can come out to your location in a timely manner. In my experience, a couple of years ago, I called them to re-key our front, side and inner garage doors so that one key would work for all three doors. The locksmith who came out made it seem like it was a difficult task because the front door had a different brand of lock. (But isn't that your job to make locks work?) Anyway, he did the job, but the front door lock was always a little tricky and you had to jiggle the key just-so to open it. I didn't complain because I thought, "oh well, the professional told me it was a difficult task..." Finally, a few weeks ago, the lock gave out so I called Brass Key again to take a look. This job's locksmith said the guy who did the previous job wasn't with the company anymore. He drilled a bigger hole in the strike plate and took the whole lock mechanism out and rebuilt it. So the dead-bolt part of the lock worked perfectly after that. Awesome. However, the latch didn't catch to the strike plate anymore, rendering the handle lock useless (which we think had something to do with the bigger hole in the strike plate). I didn't want to call Brass Key and deal with them anymore, so my husband wound up replacing the strike plate and now everything works great. So Brass Key gets 3 stars for not being perfect but at least the locks work. read more

To start things off right, the staff is awesome, very friendly and helpful. They have a great selection of keys, locks, safes, all kinds of security related items. I've used them in the past for simple duplicate keys and they always did fine work. I won't blame this on them entirely, but I would have hoped for better service. This week I took in a door lock for which I didn't have keys, and asked for two keys to be made. They had the keys ready within hours, I paid my $22.50 dollars and headed out. Only after getting home did it come to my attention that turning the keys didn't actually lock the door! I headed back in, even had an understanding attitude of, "Maybe I don't know how this lock works?" But no, the lock appeared broken, "I can work on it, but I would have to charge you for it." was the response. So, I understand that if they fabricated a key and noticed the lock was broken, that I would still have paid for their labor and the key, they would have given me an estimate to fix or replace the lock, and things would have been fine. But to charge me for the key, the duplicate key, labor and tax and never mention that the lock was broken seems like service fell a little bit short. read more
