To start things off right, the staff is awesome, very friendly and helpful. They have a great selection of keys, locks, safes, all kinds of security related items. I've used them in the past for simple duplicate keys and they always did fine work. I won't blame this on them entirely, but I would have hoped for better service. This week I took in a door lock for which I didn't have keys, and asked for two keys to be made. They had the keys ready within hours, I paid my $22.50 dollars and headed out. Only after getting home did it come to my attention that turning the keys didn't actually lock the door! I headed back in, even had an understanding attitude of, "Maybe I don't know how this lock works?" But no, the lock appeared broken, "I can work on it, but I would have to charge you for it." was the response. So, I understand that if they fabricated a key and noticed the lock was broken, that I would still have paid for their labor and the key, they would have given me an estimate to fix or replace the lock, and things would have been fine. But to charge me for the key, the duplicate key, labor and tax and never mention that the lock was broken seems like service fell a little bit short. read more

I brought a Mail Boss mailbox key to several locksmiths in the Santa Cruz area to be copied and was repeatedly told they didn't have the proper machine for the job. The Brass Key Locksmith associate took one look at the key and explained he didn't have the machine, but told me to call the manufacturer and give them the number stamped on the side of the key and the manufacturer would make a copy. We had a great time using Brass Key Locksmith. They provided us a 2 hour window to come by and showed up on the earlier side which was super helpful! They introduced themselves and provided a business card, very professional. Chris was very genuine and before making changes he would advise us what he was doing. He also showed us another structural issue with our door which we would not have known existed. We needed him to reset a commercial lock and he stated it would cost $100 to open up and reset. He ended up doing it quicker so he waived the fee which was unexpected and very nice! We would highly recommend using them! Brass Key has been my go to lock smith for any keys that need to be copied. I recently lost my truck's alarm FOB. I special ordered one through them and they received it and notified me it was there as promised. I guess my truck had an electrical issue and in the first attempt to program it, they could not get it to work. These guys don't ever give up. Instead of telling me they couldn't program it, I scheduled to come in a few days later. They knew exactly what to do that time. They used this fancy car computer to assist. It worked that time. They operated as a team but Jorge coordinated the computer assisted reprogram. They really run a tight ship and I'll continue to use them for either personal or business applications. read more

My Door Knob suddenly stopped working, leaving both: Customers Trapped inside my Facility, And Customers trapped Outside my facility. We called Brass Key Scotts Valley, Chris was here in less than one hour; Much faster than my landlord's emergency line, which called back two days later. Chris tried to fix the lock noninvasively, but after 5 minutes of labor, he/we deemed that the knob would have to be destroyed during the removal. I appreciate him asking; I just painted and stained that door, and it gave me a chance to weigh the risk and reward. Once we confirmed that we had extra paint and stain, he removed the whole thing, and replaced it in 15 minutes tops. To my surprise, he also Re-keyed the lock to my existing key! I didn't have to redo all my keys. Two days later, they called and said "oops we overcharged ten dollars" and I appreciate that honesty. I asked for some duplicate keys instead; it's not about the money, it's about Sending A Message. :) The cost of service vs dollar amount was Par for the course, but I felt like I got a lot more for my money than previous locksmith experiences. 5 Stars for the service, from start to finish. Very accommodating, went to the Brass Key to get my car ignition rekeyed to match the other locks in the car. Since they had my ignition, couldn't go anywhere (no way to start the car). Originally, I was told to just hang out there for a few hours while they rekeyed it. Told the manager that didn't work for me. Manager understood and would have someone work on it right away. Andrew from Brass Key came and spent a couple of hours working onsite. Our six doors used to all be on different keys - now they're all on the same key! He also adjusted the location of a deadbolt strike plate so that the bolt could be closed and unlocked a piece of furniture that had locked itself during the moving process. Great, fast, friendly, solution-based service. I locked myself out of the house on Sunday. Available 24/7 - Brass Key Lock Smith was the only one that would answer the phone. Chris Craig manager was at my house within 40 minutes and quickly open the door. Chris suggested that I look into purchasing a lock box for less than $40. This lockbox has a code that can be easily changed at any time. He also recommended that the key that I placed in the lock box a no duplicate key. When the deadbolt on our front door decided not to open one day I started thinking options to repair it. I am somewhat of a do-it-yourself kind of gal, but last time I attempted to switch out a door handle it was a bit more of a daunting task then I thought it would be. So, I finally decided to call Brass Key after business hours on a Friday night, expecting to leave a message. I was pleasantly surprised to hear a polite voice answering the phone! It turned out to be Craig, the manager there. He said they could either repair it or replace it, but I explained that I had been wanting to switch out the handle and lock anyway since I wanted them to match. So, he said I could either go out and get a Kwikset or Schlage handle and deadbolt myself, or, they could provide it. I told him I wanted a specific color so I would probably get them at OSH. He gave me a quote of $127 without the hardware, and said he would be there around 9am or 10am the next morning, but would call first. Then, lo and behold, he actually called on Saturday morning when he said he would, and showed up shortly afterwards. (This alone is practically a miracle in the Santa Cruz area!) He presented his card to me when he arrived, got to work right away, was friendly, did a perfect job, and, even made some extra keys for us at no additional cost, only charging me what he originally quoted. I would give this company 10 stars if I could!! VERY highly recommend Brass Key should you need any locks repaired/replaced/re-keyed, etc. read more
