While visiting Brussels a coworker highly recommended this Bavarian family ran restaurant to try. We were later informed it is the only Barbarian restaurant in Belgium. DECOR - As soon as we pulled up in the parking lot I was impressed with the layout and decor of the place. You could tell the building is well cared after. On the inside everything is beautifully decorated with floor to ceiling of wood. Great for groups, lots of space and a beer garden. The staff is friendly and makes you feel at home. The owner greets and spends time with customers through out the evening. Just a great vibe and most importantly an enjoyable evening. FOOD & DRINK - the menu has a great selection of fantastic beers and Bavarian food. Our picks were the sausages with kraut which was to die for. Two of us were not big on kraut but in this case cleaned the plate. For mains highly recommend the jäger schnitzel, the meatloaf and the cordon blue. For sides we had spatzel which is buttery pasta bits, potato dumpling which consisted of a fluffy starch ball, and traditional potato salad. Adorable German restaurant! The parking isn't very big and we barely squeezed in tonight, but thank heavens we did. English translations on the menu were helpful. The meatloaf with potato salad and egg sunny side up was DELICIOUS! I was a little skeptical but it made my night. A beer garden is about eating good homely grub with a couple of pints of beer. Brasserie Bavaria is now the only remaining German beer garden in Brussels and a great place to head to if you want to enjoy German beer, food and a lively, at times festive, atmosphere. This is a family run restaurant and you'll feel the coziness of the place as soon as you walk in. The wooden décor is reminiscent of traditional cottages or chalets. The food is hearty, full of taste and typically heavy, so you'll need a few pints of Bavarian beer to help it all down. To get there you'll have to venture outside of Brussels to Nossegem, but it is worth it. I've been a few times now and despite at times rather slow service, staff are otherwise really friendly and the kitchen produces all the classics you'd expect from a Bavarian 'brasserie', from liver dumpling soup to all kinds of sausages and a selection of schnitzels that'll keep you happy. Not to forget some very appetizing desserts. Last time round we shared a portion of spaetzle (Bavarian egg noodles with spicy cheese) while waiting for our meats, which included roast pork, cordon bleu and two kinds of schnitzels. If you do opt for spaetzle as a starter then be sure to share between a few people, as even then when combined with the main course we simply could not muster the necessary appetite to have dessert, a shame. In the past I've tried the warm applestrudl with vanilla sauce as well as the Kaiserschmarrn (a chopped pancake with apple sauce), both of which I recommend. Though be warned, these are very filling desserts and not for the fain hearted. This is a charming place in winter when the cozy interior and hearty food will warm you right up; equally as fun in summer with the large garden, music (live bands some evenings), singing and even dancing when the drinks are flowing. Not cheap, and you will have to add side dishes to accompany the meat orders. Nonetheless, a good place to go and worth the detour. read more

Went back as a party of 7 last week for a team dinner (the Thursday right before #Brussels Lockdown set in). Once again, food was fantastic - tasted great and friendly service. Love that they have menus in English for the non-local language speakers. Of the 7 diners, I was the only one who had been here before, and 2 people who actually lived locally had never heard of this place and were a bit dubious about my choice of making a reservation here for our work team's dinner. But by the end of the meal, all my colleagues was totally wowed and blown away by how good the food was, and everyone was super content. We ordered an entree this time - the potato pancakes and you absolutely have to try these with the accompanying apple sauce! The pancakes were crisply fried, tasted heavenly, but then eating them with the apple sauce took them to another level where it was fried, crispy, sweet, salty and soft - and all these food textures just hit the taste buds with a bang and it's the best kind of party in your mouth - I would totally recommend! For the main, one colleague got the sampler, and polished off every bite, two other people got the Turkey with a red pepper mushroom sauce (15,50 €) and also polished off the whole lot, another colleague got the schnitzel, but I decided to get the Crispy Roast Pork with beer sauce (15,90 €) and for my accompaniment, I also got the Bavarian bread dumpling (3 pieces of deliciousness in each bite). When the food arrived for the rest of the table, the waitress realized she had missed putting in an order for one member of the party, and I liked that she was honest and upfront about her mistake, didn't try to hide it, but apologized and the missing plate was delivered fairly quickly to my colleague afterwards. Despite this small hiccup, everyone was making appreciative noises over their food. I absolutely loved my crispy roast pork - it was so tender and juicy and the beer sauce just complimented the flavors perfectly - would absolutely get this again in a heartbeat. The accompanying bread dumpling soaked up the sauce on my plate and also worked as an ultra satisfying counterbalance to all the richness of the pork and beer. For dessert, two of my colleagues split the Fried Applecake with cinnamon and vanilla ice cream (8,50 €) and there was an audible gasp of surprise after they each took the first bite and then both commented that it was really good, so I might have to get this next time rather than my regular Black Forest cake dessert! Another colleague got the Cup Black Forest with chocolat icecream, vanilla icecream and warm cherries (6,50 €) and it's important to know the difference because this is an ice-cream version of the cake, not the cake itself! So tummies full of comforting, hearty and delicious food, we headed back out into the night. Am so glad was able to introduce my local colleagues to this wonderful restaurant, and a lot of them mentioned they would be back! read more

LEAVE THE KIDS AT HOME: We suggested Brasserie Bavaria as a meeting place with our new friends who just moved here from Ireland. We had been before, and its casual ambiance, long table setting, celebratory calendar (including an annual Octoberfest event), convivial Facebook profile, and reviews describing a festive spirit suggested it would be the perfect place for a first-time, dual-family meet up. Like us, our kids (five of them, between ages 8 and 6) were there to get to know each other. They were socializing and conversing -- not fighting, whining, complaining, spilling, dropping, throwing -- and, in our opinion, were exhibiting laudable behavior. Nevertheless, our meal was interrupted no fewer than eight times by both another family of diners as well as the waitresses (at the diners' behest) with demands to quiet our children. At one point, the other family, whose own pubescent and teen kids had their faces firmly planted in an electronic device the entire meal, exchanged words with us, charging that we should have brought books for the children to read. Admittedly, the kids' conversation did get a bit spirited at times, but so did that of the long table of 16 or so 30-somethings on the other side of the room. Boy, did we misjudge the hospitality of this place. Although the food was good, we were so worried about complaints, we had no chance of truly enjoying it. Never have I felt so unwelcome anywhere. These two families will NOT be back. read more
